Secret Of The Moon

Nightmare Moon saw the beam shoot towards her with such speed she didn't have time to react.

The rainbow beam engulfed her entire body with its bright lights, making it hurt her eyes. Her body was thrashing around as the beam tried and tried to rid her of the darkness, but it inevitably failed.

Before she could let out a scream of anguish, she felt her body disregard gravity.

Trying to look down, she saw the rainbow beam still engulfing her, but she was hovering despite not flapping her wings.

She was being teleported.

After a few long moments, she felt her hooves hit the solid rock and the beam disappeared from thin air, leaving her wherever the beam had taken her.

Nightmare Moon opened her eyes and was met with hills of rocks and a black sky.

Surprised, she looked up and saw the black sky that had a few hints of stars that were glimmering at her.

Turning to look back, she felt her eyebrows widen. The Nightmare Princess turned her entire body to stare at what she couldn't believe.

She… was outside of Equus' orbit.

Nightmare Moon was staring at the planet she was born and raised in from afar… how…?

The Elements of Harmony sent her to the moon… her sister sent her to the moon. How could…

Her mind went blank as she realised that she was stuck on the moon she so dearly loved. The same moon the ponies had disregarded since she became an alicorn.

Anger spiked in her veins but she managed to calm herself.

She started to walk slowly while observing her surroundings. The rocks under her armoured hooves clanked.

Nightmare Moon looked at Equus with a look of hate. How dare her sister banish her to the moon? How dare Celestia question her intentions for Equestria. How dare she be more popular than her?!

Nightmare Moon worked every night so the night sky would be desirable for the ponies would look at. Yet, they took her for granted.

Whenever she would help ponies who had nightmares, she would be met with distrust and suspicious eyes. It had saddened her l, especially, when she wanted to help them.

Nonetheless, she gave it her all but it had come to an end. If they wouldn't appreciate her because of Celestia, then she had no choice but to take her sister out of the picture.

Nightmare Moon then planned the coup she would commit. Or rather, Princess Luna whom she controlled.

However, she was surprised by the amount of resistance Celestia put up against her. Nightmare Moon at one point even felt afraid. She hadn't considered that the Princess of the Sun would go against her.

Celestia managed to use the Elements of Harmony on her. How she managed to do that was beyond her knowledge.

She would take her revenge!

Nightmare Moon stomped her hoof so hard a crack could be heard. Her breathing was heavy, her eyes displayed a small form of lunacy.

Looking at her hoof, she saw the crack she'd made.

"Sorry," She allowed escaping her lips.

Slumping to the hard rocks, she looked back at Equus, unsure of what to feel. How would she get back? She knew the teleportation spell, but she knew it wouldn't stretch between a moon and a planet! She wasn't that powerful.

'What can I do now?' She thought with a scowl. 'I can't teleport to Equus, and I cannot build anything from these rocks. Hmm.'

Suddenly, a sinister smirk grew on her face. Maybe there wasn't anything on the light side of the moon, but maybe there was something on the dark side?

She could always check it out.

Her mind was made up, and she made her way to the dark side, not once looking back to the planet she once called home.

However, Nightmare Moon soon had to stop in her tracks as her breathing hitched. She screamed in pain when she felt something leave her body.

"What. Was. That?!" She venomously glared at whatever had hurt her. However, Nightmare Moon was surprised to see…

"Luna?" She asked surprised.

The Princess of the Night had a dark blue coat and flowing mane and tail with the stars she coats the night with along with a half-moon cutie mark on her flank.

Princess Luna stared at Nightmare Moon with a neutral expression on her face.

"It was dangerous." She finally spoke.

Nightmare Moon tried to read the other mare’s face, but she couldn't see anything. Luna's face was completely blank.

"What was dangerous?" She asked with a snarl covering her face.

"Attempting to cast my sister out of the picture." Luna hissed. She glared down at her jealous self with contempt.

Nightmare Moon couldn't help but laugh like a mad mare. She looked at Luna and laughed again, stomping her hoof as if it was the funniest thing she'd heard.

When she managed to calm her laughter, this time with a toothy grin. There were tears in her eyes from the laughter that she wiped away with her hoof.

Luna hardened her glare at the mare, causing Nightmare Moon to speak with no mirth hidden in her voice.

"If I remember correctly, it was you who said that you wanted your sister out of the picture," Nightmare Moon emphasised two of the most powerful words in her sentence because she knew the mare couldn't deny it. Her smile as she spoke sent shivers down Luna's spine.

Luna flinched. It was true. When her jealousy grew she had spoken the words one should never say to their family, friends, or any pony for that matter.

I hate you.

Before the confrontation, she'd had an argument with Celestia about how no pony appreciated the night she put forth and even said—which was true—that a pony had called her a monster.

Her sister had simply dismissed her claims and told her to simply ignore them.

Oh, how Luna wished she did just that and did not give into her darkness. But she did. She did because her darkness overpowered her and made her powerful; more than she had ever been. It was glorious.

But now, all she had was Nightmare Moon to keep her "company" who looked to be trying to get to the dark side of the moon.

"I will not lie and say that I never spoke the words." Luna proclaimed with a look of sincerity. She sighed and looked towards Equus where she knew her sister was looking at her. "But I will not lie and say I wanted you to take her out of the picture!"

She turned to Nightmare Moon and slapped her across the face which made the other mare stare at her blankly.

When the night empress felt the stinging go away slightly, she rubbed her cheek and looked to Equus.

"Then what did you want me to do?" She hissed with spite clear in her voice.

Luna sighed. Rubbing her forehead with her hoof. Closing her eyes, she thought about what she had wanted Nightmare Moon to do. A few months ago, the answer was clear, but now, she wasn't sure.

"I don't remember," She admitted. "I guess I wanted to become Queen of Equestria so badly that I didn't stop to consider what it'd have to do to my sister other than overthrow her."

They sat in silence. They didn't know what to say to one another. Luna continued to stare at the orbit of Equus longing to co-rule with her sister. Nightmare Moon on the other hoof wanted to bring eternal night to Equus. It would have been glorious.

An eternal night with no sunlight. Only moonlight! The ponies would have no choice but to appreciate the night.

The ponies would realise that Celestia's sun was useless for them. They'd see that with magic they could grow food and that there were spells for the coat that you could use to not gain vitamin deficiency.

Nightmare Moon clenched her teeth when she thought about her defeat. She would never allow it to happen again.

She will succeed no matter the cost.

Luna could feel it. The rising tension that was building up in the black-coated mare. She knew what Nightmare Moon was thinking, but she knew the reason why the mare was thinking such dark and evil thoughts. It was because of Luna herself. She stopped thinking the dark thoughts and felt the negative energy disappear as if it was never there.

'Sister, I’m sorry for what I have said to you. It’s my fault for doing what I did. Don’t blame Nightmare Moon, blame me. I will try to reform her, I know I can.' Luna silently thought.

"We're stuck here for now," Nightmare Moon muttered with distaste.

Luna, at first, didn't respond. She looked at the planet she had never once thought to venture out of. It felt strange. It sort of felt natural, like it was meant to happen.

"I suppose we are," She finally responded.

Nightmare Moon looked at the mare and saw the calm look on her features. She didn't look surprised or angry.

"Why are you calm around me? Shouldn't you want to get rid of me somehow?" She asked with a bite in her tone.

Sighing, Luna looked at Nightmare Moon and surprised even herself with the smile she allowed to form on her lips. She had tears that were slowly slipping down her cheeks.

"I don't blame you, Nightmare Moon. The only one to blame is me. I allowed my jealousy to consume me and allowed you to be born. Because of the emotional state I was in, you can only feel the emotions I've allowed myself to feel. I'm sorry that I blamed you." Luna was sobbing at this point. The realisation of what she tried to do hit her like a ton of bricks.

Nightmare Moon was uncertain of what to do. Her connection to Luna only lasted long enough to feel negativity that made her stronger, but she never felt sadness before.

The black-coated mare felt her heart clenching. It felt weird and something filled her mind that she couldn't describe.

Her mind had wandered off to the fight she had with Celestia and saw how ferocious she fought the Sun Princess. But she also saw the desperation. Desperate to free her sister from the negativity that consumed her like a black hole.

"What is this feeling?" Nightmare Moon asked quietly but Luna heard her.

She turned to the mare and smiled a sad, wet smile.

"You're feeling sad. Because of your connection to me, you can feel the emotions I feel. Right now, I feel sadness, therefore; you feel sad." She explained to the best of her ability.

Nightmare Moon frowned but didn't say anything.

Suddenly, without warning. Princess Luna hugged the black-coated mare. Startled, Nightmare Moon looked at Luna and saw her tears run down her face. She was shaking. Carefully, Nightmare Moon hugged her back with her hooves and they stayed like that for a long time.

"I promise you, I will help you," Luna said while sobbing. "I will redeem you and help you, Nightmare. "You're my friend."

Nightmare Moon didn't know what to say. From the long months of knowing the mare, she had never felt positivity. She hadn't even received any form of thanks from Luna, but hearing her voice with so much determination made her heart feel warm.

For the first time, Nightmare Moon felt positivity. With warmth, she hugged Luna.

This was their little secret.

Luna and NMM bond is amazing.

Wonder if we will see how it goes after they come back from the moon?
Or if Spike can help too?

We so need more. What happens next.

Sadly, I haven't planned on a sequel. This is it.

I like the idea that Luna and Nightmare could have had a positive relationship if they tried.

I agree with that. You can't just give us a cliffhanger and call it quits.

SSoooo.....Luna, and NMM, are joined at the heart ????
