The Blue EM2

Glad to be here at last.

Sequels1

E

This story is a sequel to Thomas and Friends: Race to the Edge

Izzy Moonbow and Porter find themselves tasked with shipping some freight across the mainland when the existing plans fall through. Although it initially seems like a fairly easy job, the pair soon learn that nothing is as it seems. New friends, new allies, and new enemies await as they learn that no matter where you are, adventure has a habit of finding you.

Based on Journey Beyond Sodor, a movie in the Thomas and Friends franchise. Written as part of the 40 Years of MLP celebrations.

"Boring," Charles replied, as the yard hoved into view. It was just then he noticed that the speed didn't seem to be particularly dropping. "What was that about miles an hour?"

That's not good! :twilightoops:

Zipp glanced at the brake gauge. "The brakes are applied, but we're not slowing down. This isn't good." She grabbed the radio as the speed through Perranwell began to climb out of control. "33021 to yard control, how copy over?"

'how copy over?' makes no sense. :applejackconfused:

"Look what you've done to my breakfast! Now I'll have to cook it again!"

Lol, nice reference to 'Thomas comes to breakfast.' :rainbowlaugh:

"I guess expecting some sympathy from my colleagues was too much," Charles grumbled, as he was loaded onto a lorry and driven away.

This is why you shouldn't break records Charles. :ajbemused:

Hitch walked over with a damage report. "It most certainly wasn't pretty," he said. The shed's totalled. Charles is out of action, as is Rebecca, as she sustained severe damage in the collapse."

"The shed's totalled.*
And damn, looks like they got an engine shortage with two of their engines out of service. :fluttershysad:

"Provided a talking tumbleweed doesn't roll past we should be OK," Izzy replied. "Don't evenings like this make you feel like bursting out in song?"

How does she know about that? The talking tumbleweed? :unsuresweetie:

"I'm still not sure why everybody around here sees evrything as a musical," Misty replied.

everything*
You and me both Misty. :duck:

Pipp checked the comments. "Oh, superchat from a fan here. They ask us if we plan on hitching a ride on a container ship to travel all the way around the world, exploring railway lines in the process and getting into unrealistic hijinks." She snorted. "Pfft. That sounds like the plot of a bad movie written by people who know nothing about railways!"

It is. :pinkiecrazy:

"We should be fine!" Izzy said. "Besides, we can scrounge water as we go along. There's plenty of it in England!"

Huh, I was expecting only Izzy and Porter to be the ones taking the train. Still, this just makes the story more interesting. :ajsmug:

Porter's comment broke the silence afterwards. "I must ask why this has become a musical."

Best not to question it. It gets old pretty fast. :pinkiesick:

1. Indeed, it is bad.

2. How copy, over is standard radio protocol for 'is this message understood'. It's used in place of 'how do you copy' as the former takes less time to say.

3. It seems Posey has the same skewed priorities as the stationmaster's wife.

4. Nope.

5. And at the worst possible time too.

6. I don't know.

7. Yes.

8. Or is it? Remember that T&F doesn't exist in this universe.

9. More characters makes things more interesting. Besides, a 2F Dock Tank would struggle to move that lot.

10. Yes.

I'm impressed you made a reference to the 1989 Cajon runaway in this story. But I wonder what caused Charles to lose his brakes?

And to answer Misty and Porter's question, almost everything in MLP has a song number in it. Done from the 1980s cartoon up to G5. It's kinda a thing in the show.

11546933
1. All shall be made clear.

2. I assigned that to Misty as, AFAIK, Misty is yet to get any solo musical numbers (MYM heavily implies she is tone deaf).

11547063
Hmm, 40 years and now they decide to make a character that's tone deaf.

11547065
The Dazzlings sorta count. The time loop special reveals they rely on autotune to sing after the events of Rainbow Rocks.

11547203
I meant with normal Equine characters. Not EQG, or humans. Cause all Equines had more song numbers than anyone else.

11547207
Oh. I think it highlights how she's had no real contact with pony society, seeing as the others are good singers.

11547314
That would make sense. I mean not once has Opaline ever done any singing. (And if you ask me, I think it would be better if she didn't, cause not every single villain needs to sing)

11547315
The third TYT album gives Opaline a villain song, which is done in the style of a classic Disney villain song.

11547459
It only came out recently; the accompanying short is yet to release on YT.

"Clever. Network Rail does seem to like removing all the water towers for some reason."

That's just how things were once steam was discontinued. :ajbemused:

Both engines were then cleared to reverse through Platform 2, and moved to the opposite end of the station before attaching to the other end. Luckily, they had taken the precaution to include two brake vans within the formation, and away they went up the steep slope out of the station.

Smart move. :ajsmug:

The freight then set off, wondering to themselves what on Earth they had just witnessed.

Best to not question it. And be glad he didn't sing. :ajbemused:

11547852
1. There has been a proposal to reinstall water towers at stations along routes frequented by railtours.

2. Freight formations on heritage lines often have two brakevans as it means they don't have to reshuffle the train every time they change direction.

3. Thomas? Who's Thomas? Well, I don't know who Thomas is!

11547872
1. Interesting
2. And here I thought seeing two cabooses on trains in the US was something common as I know many tourist lines and museums that do that.
3. I spook too soon. :facehoof:

11547878
1. It would reduce the need for water lorries to turn out to fill up locos.
2. I assume the US lines do it for the same reason?
3. Though in all seriousness not many know of Thomas. The engines of Sodor are semi-mythological figures at this point.

11547894
1. Got it
2. From what I know, it's only a thing in the preservation era as some museums and tourist lines often use 1 or 2 caboose in their consists. This one, aka the Wilmington & Western is a good example as most of their runs throughout the year they'll have 1, 2 or sometimes 3 cabooses in their consist behind their steam powered runs.

3. true

11547941
1. Np.
2. Is it cabooses or cabeese as the plural? My parents and I have debated this point of English for years.
3. Indeed.

11547994
The shorts often use cut-down versions of the songs for some reason.

11548000
I've never heard anyone in my life call a caboose that. So, that could be it.

11548004
I don't get it either. MYM also does this; Portrait of a Princess uses a condensed version of the Portrait Day song. The difference between the full and cut versions? 8 seconds.

11548031
Ridiculous, I know. Besides, new chapter.

11548066
I did read it and I will say, that bit from Monty Python was cool. But I like how the riddles were more unique in this case.

11548025
Sometimes, just depends on the way someone says it.

11548129
Thanks. Beresford always felt like an afterthought to me. Brenner commented in an interview that he was always frustrated by Mattel mandating gimmicks for the show and film, so he tried to get past them as fast as possible in order to get back to the story he was trying to tell.

11548285
Well, Brenner definitely was the better director for the series.

11548288
That he was. Though even he knew when to throw in the towel.

11548432
He jumped ship at the right time. I mean, who wants AEG on their CV?

11548436
Not I. I don't even wanna use for my universes especially in Multiverse projects.

11548438
Good man. Or failing that use them as evidence of a villains' work.

11548609
I personally maintain that AEG takes place in the Dead Space universe and that the engines are in fact Necromorphs, mutated by the power of a Red Marker. (Apologies if none of that made sense.)

awesome chapter mate keep it up can't wait for the next chapter say what you want about women in the military they were badasses

11548831
The barrier to women serving in combat was recently lifted in much of the Western world.

Both engines and their drivers looked on in disbelief at an engine sat in a nearby siding. The engine was small and blue, with disproportionately large bufferbeams for his size. Scattered atop his boiler was an interesting jumble of machinery, presumably critical for his operation. His also had quite a tall chimney with a copper cap, which meant he closely resembled the 'steam elephants' of the dawn of the steam age.

Steam elephants? :applejackconfused:

The engine noted this. "I'm Fergus," he replied. "Spent my working career in the South. It's a little strange now being based in County Durham, but this yard has plenty of work for me to do. And where are you two headed?"

Huh, and here I thought they'd met Theo, but it's still nice to see fergus.

"Not in the United States it isn't," the saddle tank said. "The colliery I worked at was owned by an American, and he named be after his daughter. Quite confusing, isn't it? Apparently he wasn't aware that Ashley is a male given name in the UK."

he named me after his daughter.*
I'm not even gonna question the whole name thing as I've seen this thing many times before. :applejackunsure:

Tempest pulled up the sleeve of her jacket, revealing her entire forearm to be a prosthetic. "Yeah. Losing your entire forearm is a good reason for a medical discharge from the military. Still, it could have been worse. It's pretty dextorous, after all." She picked up a tool with it and took to oiling Ashleigh's axleboxes. "So, what brings you here?"

Oh my! :pinkiegasp:

"Good news, boss," he said. "They're coming. Roll out the red carpet."

Uh oh! :twilightoops:

11548910
1. Back in the very early years of steam traction (1810s-1820s), steam locomotives often had extremely long chimneys to compensate for the fact that the boiler had only one tube. This, and the slow, lumbering movement of early locomotives, reminded people of elephants. In terms of use the expression is roughly equivalent to iron horse.

2. Although having a character with ASD in T&F was fantastic, seeing as a considerable proportion of the fanbase has the condition, I still feel the writers missed a trick in not bringing Fergus back.

3. Thanks for spotting the error. That was loosely based on personal experience; I know quite a few people called Chris, which is short for many different male and female names.

4. Tempest Shadow having no horn is often represented in EqG as her missing a hand or having a prosthetic, as unicorns use their horns for many functions humans use hands for (though I am yet to cut open a can of baked beans with my bare hands).

5. It bodes badly...

11548939
1. Ah, makes perfect sense now.
2. I surprisingly didn't know theos va had that til about a few weeks ago when I found a video mentioning it. And yeah, I do agree on fergus, I mean, he only appeared in season 7 and has never been seen since.
3. Got it
4. I see

"Not in the United States it isn't," the saddle tank said. "The colliery I worked at was owned by an American, and he named be after his daughter. Quite confusing, isn't it? Apparently he wasn't aware that Ashley is a male given name in the UK."

That should be, "He named me after his daughter".

But I think Fegus is perfect for this adventure! And Ashleigh sounds like an amazing engine! And I personally never hated Tempest Shadow. She was one of the better characters I've seen come out of the show.

11548948
1. NP.
2. Apparently, Bruno (yes he's an AEG character) is the first character in the history of the franchise to be explicitly stated to have ASD. However, I feel Theo fits the type better.
3. NP.
4. Interesting bit of MLP lore for you.
