"Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender." G'Kar - Babylon 5

The newest threat to harmony comes from above: the sun and the moon themselves.

It's Equestria's Golden Age of Harmony, and the amulet Princess Twilight Sparkle used for decades to start the day and the night is starting to fail. Moving the sun and moon across the horizon grows more and more difficult with every passing day. If a solution isn't found soon Equestria will be condemned to eternal day or night, never changing again.

Hope remains, though, as Twilight looks to the only two ponies in Equestria who might have answers about the sun and moon. It remains to be seen if she is ready to hear those answers, or to do what must be done to maintain harmony.

I appreciate that Twilight is uncomfortable with keeping secrets from the public like this. information wants to be free and all that

Why not Alicornify everypony? If it grants immortality, or even merely longevity, then withholding it is murder by neglect. Even if not it, it leaves them, crippled by comparison. Yes, criminals would be more powerful, but so would the victims and authorities resisting them. One might argue that collateral damage would go up, but the day to day benefits would outweigh that.

You give ponies way too much credit if you think the world wouldn't descend into absolute and complete chaos. There aren't enough fingers or toes on a human body to count the number of ponies who would try to overthrow Twilight.

Or inadvertently destroy the planet because they have no bucking idea of how to use their powers.

I always thought the idea of giving a tangible character to the sun and moon to be filled with potential for mystery, character and world building, and I do enjoy the way you've portrayed both (Though you already know that I preferred the moon's portrayal to the sun's, though both were good)

And then there's this chapter. This chapter alone feels like its own little contained mini
romance story within, and it is the part I absolutely adore the most. Great job Wayward!

What marvellous usage of horse words - this will truly become an epic work of its time... To be spoken in the same breath as Shakespeare, Bacon and Poe.

And a thousand times that many to stop the evil-doers.

As for the foolish, I find it hard to believe that a scholar such as Twilight does not know enough about finding good teachers to avoid that especially if she should start with those who have the wisdom of age and are thus nearer to death. Also, I believe that a version of the "Foal's Forbearance" that was used on Flurry Heart that works on adults could be researched for the learning period? And that is assuming that the original does not work on adults despite the name.

For a PonyFic that studies the questions of mass alicornifaction in greater depth throughout, I recommend The Great Alicorn Hunt. The greatest number of issues are addressed in chapter four, but the specific concerns you raise are best addressed when they are discussing Sunset Shimmer in chapter 18 after ascension. Also, I admit that HOW Alicornification is achieved varies between the two tics in a way that makes comparisons less than 100%, but I still propose it is close enough to be worth looking into.

I was kinda hoping this would lead into an explanation as to how the sun and moon work in G5, but for what this is, it's pretty good.

I really loved both the concept this story introduces and the execution of said concept in story. Would love to see how might the experience go for Twilight later in the day when she has to wake up and rise the excited sun, as well as lay to rest the moon

Wonderful story. Interesting interpretation of Sun and Moon.

Frowning, she looked back over her shoulder, seeing the moon already cresting the eastern horizon. The sun remained stubbornly at the edge of the sky, motionless.

This is probably a bit of a nitpick, so I hope you don't mind me indulging my obsessive-compulsiveness. Every single sunrise and sunset in the show depicts the sun and moon pass each other side-by-side on the same horizon, meaning they orbit in opposite directions.

If I have to be honest, you've captured my interest already, and it's only been chapter 1!
One thing, though, is that Twilight depends on the amulet to raise the sun and moon, and I thought she might be ready to use her own magic.
I hope you don't mind me if I'm criticizing.

An interesting concept.
