I'm an experienced writer and editor who happens to like ponies.

E

Flurry Heart has grown up with the legends of King Sombra's evil deeds. Crystal ponies fear him. Her parents despise him. Even Twilight Sparkle, the Princess of Friendship, considers him a lost cause after thrice thwarting his attacks on Equestria and the Crystal Empire.

Any one of these factors would cause a reasonable pony to avoid him at all cost. But Flurry Heart isn't always a reasonable pony. And so, one fateful day, she decides to call on the king of shadows himself to answer a few questions.

Great story so far!! I’m looking forward to reading more!

With that username, I’m not surprised!

Seriously, though, thanks! Hope it’s as good as you expect, maybe even better.

11141382
You’re welcome, looking forward to seeing what happens next! :D

Okay, seriously. What the f:flutterrage::twilightangry2:k is this fandom's obsession with shipping Flurry and Sombra? I get kids can be stupid. But I can't see Flurry being this crazy.

Una

Very interesting turn of events indeed. I look forward towards the next chapter!

Big oof for Flurry

Flurry held up a hoof. "Sombra, they were turned to stone almost 20 years ago. And Grogar wasn't even Grogar. It was Discord in disguise."

A long silence stretched as the two watched each other, eyebrows furrowed. "That's not possible," Sombra said at last. "I saw them only a few days ago."

Didn't Flurry already identify herself as the infant that Sombra held hostage during his most recent takeover? Since he knows that time doesn't exist in the ether, he should already have put two and two together here.

11145664
You're referring to this passage, yes?

"I-I'm told you used me as leverage to capture the Crystal Empire when I was very young," Flurry stammered.

"Ah. The child. You alicorns must grow quickly."

What I meant to imply, and may not have done well, is that Sombra assumes alicorns age much more quickly than other types of ponies, so she has somehow reached adulthood in what he believes to be a small span of time. When Sombra says later that "time doesn't exist in the ether," that's meant to be a revelation to him and Flurry. I was sloppy with the phrasing though; it should be more like time moves very slowly in the ether, compared to normal time in Equestria. I should make that clearer. Thank you!

Una

This is a very interesting story, but it feels kinda rushed at points.

11145969
Hi there! Was there any part in particular that went too fast? I’m still learning romance, so any advice is appreciated!

This is good

11147767
Thank you! I’m glad you’re enjoying it.

11145973
I'd say that the drama with Flurrys parents dancing around her issues really. We could have possibly scene a few more scenes with that, or possibly with Sombra's appearances during Flurry's everyday life and how he affects it.

Just my 2 cents

P.S This last chapter was very enjoyable.

11147909
Thanks for the reply! I will keep that in mind as I move forward.

Dk

this story is getting great

11148172
Thanks! Hoping to keep it up!

"You certainly have a bit of your aunt in you."

Nice touch.

As I read, the more curious I feel. Can't wait for the next chapter

11148803
Awesome! Hope to have it ready tomorrow!

Poor Sombra and his species. And what Sombra say is true; history is written by the heroes and the Magic of Friendship does always ends with violence

11149720
The major villains do seem to end that way. I’ve always thought that was a little weird, though with how evil they’re portrayed, I’m not surprised the writers didn’t try to redeem some of them.

11149727
Instead the writers gave us a fake Grogar, a Chaotic Weasel that got away with his crime, the worst finale battle and Epilogue episode in order for the viewers to be suckered into to forgetting that awful battle.

Will Flurry stand up to her parents and aunt to protect Sombra or live with regret? Can't wait for the results.

That last line was pure :heart::heart:

11152820
It’s one of my favorites in this story.

Twilight & her friends are giving Sombra a trial? I’m wondering if Duncecord was given a trial for his crime or they just abuse the justice system and gave him a slap on the wrist?

11152925
Since Celestia and Luna were in charge during Discord’s reformation, I assume that Twilight and Co. wouldn’t have had much involvement with whatever legal proceeding took place. That said, the show certainly doesn’t delve into whatever Discord would have had to do to prove his change of heart, so it kind of seems like slap on the wrist is what happened.

11152979
The Justice System has always been dead in any form. Cartoons, anime, video games, the whole shabang. Anyway wish to prove me wrong, go ahead.

11154690
Oh thank you for reminding me of the Ace Attorney series

11154690
HOLD IT!

The trial hasn’t started yet! That’s the next chapter!

The room was silent for a moment. Then, Twilight herself spoke. "This story does shed new light on your actions," she said. "I have only one question. How can we be sure it is true?"

after his story verify to be true:
Celestia: OH COME ON Twilight! You know how much bit i have to spend to cover up Sombra hometown and you just let it show like that

Flurry's heart raced. She'd expected this question, and prepared for it as only she could. "I will speak for him," she said. "I believe what he says is true. You may rely on his word as though it were my own."

"I object."

Flurry nearly leapt out of her skin. Mom stood across from her, facing the Council. The crowd began to mutter again. "I must object," Mom repeated, "for the good of Equestria."

why is Cadence objecting? I mean she's objecting against her own daughter. Is she secretly hiding some of Equestria's dark secrets that Celestia and Luna told her to hide?

"I object."

Flurry nearly leapt out of her skin. Mom stood across from her, facing the Council. The crowd began to mutter again. "I must object," Mom repeated, "for the good of Equestria."

I doubt it'll be brought up, but I have to wonder if Cadance has standing to raise an objection here? I mean, I get that she's a princess, and this is her territory, so to speak, but this trial doesn't look like an open forum; not just anyone can stand up and take part in the procedures. Twilight and her friends are the collective judges, Flurry is the defense; unless Cadance wants say that she's prosecuting, the rules that Flurry is relying on probably require her to sit down and shut up. Maybe Flurry should raise that point, though I doubt it'll do her any good.

11154955
Not stated, but I’m treating her as a somewhat sovereign ruler with special privileges. Good question!

11154925
Dear Princess Celestia,

Please see the attached illustration explaining my decision.

Your faithful monarch, Twilight Sparkle.

Attachment 1

11154950
That will be revealed in the next (and final) chapter. Should be published on Friday!

11142268
Well at least they're not already related.

So, I found this to be fairly good, if a bit short (or maybe rushed, especially at the end) but overall it was a good story. Thanks for posting it.

11156816
Thanks for the read! Romance isn’t my strength, and I can see why some people think it’s rushed, but I’m glad it turned out well.

Ponies are often their own worst critics,

That's some solid advice I tell you what.

"Don't tell me how to breathe!"

LOL

Your pity comes too late.

Another good line.

"Sometimes, a wish is enough."

That’s another great line.

Mom let out a chuckle. "You certainly have a bit of your aunt in you." She took Flurry's list in her magic and read it over.

haha, i was thinking that exactly! it's a fascinating take on Flurry already

Flurry’s mind ran these details though her complicated mental calculus, developed carefully over twenty years. It was one of the few tools she had to accomplish what seemed to come so naturally to everypony—nay, everycreature—else. It wasn't exactly reliable, though, and with Mom, the perfect diplomat who so effortlessly controlled every gesture and word, Flurry often found it impossible.

It really was her favorite, in the same sense that King Sombra's second invasion of the Crystal Empire was the best of the three—short-lived and minimally damaging.

oof, poor Flurry!

Even in infancy, her magic rivaled that of the Royal Pony Sisters. And this strange process she had to follow simply to tell what another pony was feeling and thinking...

fascinating to think of the two as being connected somehow!

Revealing the other answer would be... inadvisable.

ooh, ominous

Sometimes, it felt like overthinking was the only way she could do anything.

and again, this is a fascinating take on a Flurry Heart that one might call neurodivergent! excited to see where this goes

Her cutie mark, a magnifying glass, signified as much.

i love collecting Flurry Heart cutie mark ideas

Flurry couldn't leave anything to chance. Given his obsession with the Crystal Empire, she considered it her duty to find a permanent solution.

yes, yes, we all need our paper-thin excuses for why we're obsessed with Sombra

So far, his only response had been to send her a large tome titled "SECRET STORY OF KING SOMBRA'S TRAGIC CHILDHOOD" that, when opened, shouted "CRYSTALS!" in Sombra's voice over and over.

hahaha, this is perfect! love it

The fourth hoof agreed, as it was common consensus that whatever power Sombra had was a corrupting one.

just remarking how adorable the four hooves thing is here. i really hope i remember to steal this for myself later

"Not just anypony—an alicorn," Sombra said. He paced around his enclosure, but his eyes remain fixed on Flurry's. "You look familiar."

hehehe, she was just a cute lil' baby then!

"Distracted?" There it was—the sharp rise in tone, verging on a shriek. But what did it mean? "I'm laying bare the darkest parts of your soul, and you're distracted?"

gotta cut Sombra down by being a little too weird socially to automatically follow along Sombra's whole deal by social momentum, that is how these shipfics go!

Sombra's mouth fell open. His wide eyes stared at her. Surprise, maybe? "You dragged me out of the depths of the ether to ask... where I grew up?"

for some reason i imagine this fitting in with a Cutie Mark Crusaders story, where the joke is that they really don't have any motives beyond learning these facts for a school project, or something, haha

"Hey, kiddo!" Dad ruffled her mane with a grin. She jerked away, but returned his smile. "I just finished my rounds. Ready to practice those lines?" Flurry nodded and welcomed him in. Dad looked around the room and nodded. "You know, I kind of expected to see a bunch of papers and books out. Glad you're keeping things tidy this year."

augh, Shining does the well-meaning but oblivious dad so well!

"At sunset, the light that shines in everypo—I mean, everycreature will fill the Crystal Heart and... andprotectourkingdomfortheyeartocome."

ah, the pony/creature slip-up, classic!

She stepped forward and embraced Flurry with a foreleg. After a moment, Flurry returned the gesture. Once again, Mom's steady heart beat against the flutter of her own. "Get some sleep, sweetheart," Mom whispered in her ear. "I love you."

awwwwww adorable

...or confusing a griffon with a hippogriff...

i mean...

"Don't waste my time, insolent whelp. You ponies solve all your problems with heart-shaped crystals or rainbow lasers. Give that a try."

so true

"But... I don't have any friends."

oof!

"Oh, you don't know?" Sombra grinned. "They're out there now, plotting revenge against Twilight Sparkle and her miserable friends."

interesting how Sombra thinks this. i guess the "old mare" comment earlier wasn't meant to be literal!

Flurry shook her head. "I've never heard of any place called Duskfall."

yay, secret history!

"Uh... just... learning about old trade routes," Flurry answered. "Really important to know... about trade..."

so true! being an alicorn ruler is almost entirely about trade negotiations, after all

"You've always understood ponies—creatures—whatever! I can't even get the word right!"

aww, she's having so much trouble with this! was the Crystal Empire she grew up in unusually homogenous species-wise?

They were so concerned with appearing strong that they hid the fissures lurking below the surface as long as they could.

well, that would certainly explain a lot!

"We meet again," Sombra said, grin widening as he lowered his head. Flurry desperately hoped she'd remembered the antimagic wards. Sombra glanced over at Flurry and winked. "You've been keeping secrets of your own, eh?"

hahaha, Sombra must be having such a great time right now

She looked around. Sombra was nowhere to be seen, but when her eyes settled on the blanket, she saw that it was, in fact, his distinctive fur-lined cloak.

aww, that must be very warm! and solid proof that Flurry was right

"Knock it off," she said. "That's a cheap trick, and you know it. Now, stop being a scaredy-foal and come out where I can see you."

hehehe, the advantage of using facts and logic instead of feelings

This village suffered the fate it was always destined to meet. It died slowly over decades, perhaps even a century or two, unable to keep up with the passage of time."

oof, definitely understand why a battle would be preferable for such a pony as Sombra

Sombra visibly shuddered. "I despise your modern titles, but yes. Princess of the sun and moon I can tolerate, but friendship..."

hehehe, that's the reaction that makes me love that title more!
