Interesting, interesting. Her shadow being one of a friend and lover is a nice touch, she being able to tame it because she accepted she's "nothing special" does present an interesting counterpoint. She tamed it easily because it's no Hero' Reflection, just a normal gal. Didn't think of this possibility before, gotta recognize that.
The letter to Luna does show Lorraine seems to care more than Twilight and the others, or at least wants to salvage the relationship. Outsider perspective, maybe? Curious to see where this will lead.

She's said it herself, she prefers to either get along with people or be left alone. She's been working herself to the point it's self-destructive. Her shadow is her finally going "fuck this shit" in the best way possible. The poor noodle is done being a doormat.
Lorraine is a self insert character, my gut reaction to similar situations that involve arguments with friends (though the situation is a very rare one) is to hash things out, I'm usually the mediator when two friends do have a disagreement (again, not a common occurrence). The noodle dragon has done this with both Rainbow Dash and Applejack so she would do the same with Luna.
I'm happy I was able to word the tamed shadow stuff properly, I don't have much confidence in my writing but I wanted to make it clear that when Lorraine's Shadow does fully manifest, it's not for anything remotely aggressive or combat.
EDIT- Lorraine may get something for intimidation later on, but it would be something that goes with her "leave me the fuck alone" response to repeated harassment.
Hopefully things will be allowing Lorraine to calm down and recover some, given the strain of options which are as bad as exams or driving license?
Meetings and options in the garden? Or just rest and reflections?

Dude, she wants to be seen as person, going to Solaire and trying to wield the Light won't result in that. Her magic reacted negatively to stress because people aren't seeing past their initial first impressions no matter what she does so, she's going to The Nightmare for her sake, to be something she's happy being. She's done caring about what people expect, she's doing things her way.
She is not a Luck Dragon, she will never see herself as a Luck Dragon.

So, if The Nightmare is a bad idea, explain why.
I've watched like half an unfinished letsplay of a persona game, where the letsplayers were talking over everything, but this shadow business is starting to sound familiar.

That's what I had in mind.

Because her being behind the whole NMM thing makes her just SCREAM evil, regardless of what Luna was doing. This makes it seem like she's going to put herself at the mercy of someone who appears as if they'd do something terrible or corruptive.
This is also connected to why I think she sgoukd at least try and get some kind of help from Soliare, because he doesn't have any of Nightmare's reputation and since Luck Dragons are his thing he would have some responsibility to help her. She was compatible with being q Luck Dragon before, but ponies made her incompatable (apparently? its a bit confusing) so it seems to me she could just become incompatable with whatever she turns into if ponies drive her into self loathing, which would make her incompatable with herself and force her to xhange again. Maybe? I'm not sure hiw this all works.
Basically, Nightmare seems Evil, and even if she transforms permanently this could still happen again so if they make sure it can't happen again she'd be better off in any form she chose.

Solaire doesn't have anything to do with Luck Dragons, he's just one of the more friendlier gods. Luck Dragons are divine creatures by their very nature. Lorraine is bowing out of that divinity for a form more suited to her tastes, as stated multiple times- she is not a god, nor a hero but the world works under the assumption that she is. She has done her best with what she was given but circumstances outside of her control resulted in a negative reaction.
As for the harassment, changing species solves one the most common first impressions people have of Lorraine, that she's royalty or otherwise special. This will give her enough freedom to properly address the herd based harassment Ponyville mares have been beating into her since day one.
Nightmare Moon was The Nightmare fixing Luna's monumental fuck-up via possession. This iteration of Nightmare Moon isn't willfully malicious, she is doing her job. Lorraine is going to choose her new form of her own free will, The Nightmare is merely helping her take on that form and balance out her magic.

She isn't moping, she's facing verbal abuse every time she leaves the house by herself, her male roommates face sexual harassment and both her and her boyfriend are met with racism on the daily. This level of harassment would stress anyone out and wear them down, especially when Lorraine has tried to ignore it and focus on her job.
The change is a moment of character growth, she's realizing that yes, she matters and the form she was given isn't one she's comfortable being thanks to the negative experiences she's gone through.
Is desiring change for one's own health really that bad? Look at the chapters after Eruption, she has her reasons for wanting to change and states them loud and clear.
She doesn't care if Ponyville's attitude doesn't change, she's doing this for her own sake, it just took something drastic to get her to realize that.

You'll find out.

We have plans for Chrysalis. :)

It is not bad to try to find happiness but in this case the order of events are not correct. She obviously cares about the opinion of Ponyville since she has chosen to remain in that city (Manehattan?) and live in this nation of Equestria (Dragonlands) despite harassment she is facing, she has chosen not to go through proper channel (Literal paragons of the gods) which she has in abundance or called in other potential allies (Conservation Society) which she might not agree with now but who definitely might have a punch and agreement of some details could be hammered out.
In my eyes she has many options yes we see her earlier in her house talking to herself how she needs to be the strong one to protect everyone else. To me it seems she has trapped herself in a victim narrative and thinking that changing her physical form is the solution.
Now at this moment of time Literal gods are involved and reinforce her way of thinking and somehow there is an actual medical reason to do this? The order of sequence is way off there, she starts talking big and how the change is for her and will give her confidence only AFTER the in-story validation. To me it seems like those feelings are only there as a justification not the cause, but ones assumes the writer knows their story better than i do, but i see massive problem there and that in turn makes immersion harder.
Like i said this is just my thinking here take it as you will. Likely the main problem stems from the fact the story avatar was about the Luck Dragon and i expected cool things to happen with that and now those cool things will not happen.

The main plot of the story is about a pair of characters that are ill suited to the traditional anime/ rom-com protagonist role being shoehorned into it. We may have to change the description and we are working on getting new coverart.
While it can come off as the how you put it, it's more along the lines of Lorraine being too much of a pushover and used to putting her health off to one side do anything about a situation that affects her directly. She's had to be told that yes, she doesn't have to live like that, that yes she has these options otherwise she would live as is and her quality of life would suffer as a result. The issue is twofold, she's an endangered species so those in the know believe she'll be the same as the Luck Dragons of old. The other is the herd based harassment. It took Luna dismissing her frustration and stress to cause a stress induced injury, ponies see her as nothing but a dragon and don't look past that initial first impression and if you couple that with her desire to help her friends above all else, you get a very stressed, magically unstable Luck Dragon.
Lorraine and John often forget they have the Princesses on speed dial. As for moving elsewhere, she has friends and both her and her boyfriend are trying to make a life for themselves in Ponyville, they do generally want to help improve things but as of this point in the story, Lorraine is not okay and that needs to be addressed. Her character arc is denouncing whatever "destiny" has been forced upon her and the first step of that is to not be a demigod of Light and Purity.
Lorraine is dense as rock when it comes to looking after herself, not just in romance. It took something like a physical injury for her to finally realize what she got turned into doesn't fit with how she wants to be treated. She is finally getting her arse into gear.

I would like to point out that it isn't the opinions of Ponyville Lorraine cares about, it is the fact that it a ceaseless bombardment of sexist and racist behavior with no end whenever her or her roommates leave the house and things only got worse after Applejack was arrested. The townsfolk are wearing her down when she just wants to be left alone.
