Cute story and a nice insight into Rarity's personality as well as AJ's - two ponies often underestimated. Great job.

That was a great story, my friend. Well done!

Sounds just like her:)

From your story blurb:

Applejack is concerned his friend may be in over her head.

It's fine in the full description, but I did a double take when I saw the male pronoun when skimming available fics. Might want to change it to 'her'.

I've got mixed feelings about this story. I liked the setup, especially the selection of charity events.

But I just can't find myself agreeing with the central conceit, that a moderately trained unicorn, without using any magic, can defeat a combat-experienced, athletic and magically powerful earth pony in unarmed melee combat. Sure, training in some martial arts lets you redirect your opponents strength to a limited extent, but against someone with magical strength, it doesn't seem adequate. It'd be like Luke Cage or Captain America fighting an unarmed guy with a black belt. You know the guy with the black belt isn't going to win that fight.

That said, the story was well written, and Apple Boom in particular was adorable.

That is a valid point, but here's the thing: Applejack isn't combat EXPERIENCED at this point, she's an athlete, yes, but there's a lot of fights that haven't happened in Season 2 where this fight takes place. She might know how to roughhouse and rodeo, but she knows basic fighting skills at best.

Rarity is a Black Belt, and don't forget she mentions that she learned it because she was a regular victim of bullying and has maintained her training all her life.

On top of that, Applejack was seriously underestimating her.

So there's more to it than 'Rarity is a blackbelt'.

That said, glad you liked a good bit of the story.

8663714 Is Rarity being a black belt something for your story, or is that from the show? Because I know Rainbow is a black belt in the show, but I don't remember anything where Rarity discusses her training.

It's kind of common fanon due to several times her being shown to be an unusually good fighter and using martial arts in a few fight scenes.

Welcome! And thanks for reading.

somehow it ended up on fire on the moon rebuilt into a dog house

What???
Something burned and was rebuilt into a dog house? It's kinda unclear

This is a great story. Good job.

I really liked this story. The charity's chosen make complete sense for the characters. You gave an interesting addition onto Rarity's back story while providing a solid reason on why in battles she is more physical than most would expect a unicorn. I think you also handled Applejack well because she does not come across as arrogant so much as that she worried for her friends well being. This leading her to under estimate Rarity and losing was not that surprising but the conversation afterwards was very nice. Also it is completely in character that Rarity would have a plan to help her charity win or lose and by extension offering the other method to help Applejack. I love there friendship. Keep up the good stories.

As a self-defender, one of the things I've been taught is to never underestimate your opponent, or you will leave yourself open to fatal surprises. This story reinforced that.

Simple tale but enjoyable!

Depends, AJ understimated her. Fighting is ninety percent psychology.

I enjoyed this little peak into an unexpected side to Rarity.
