The Crystal Empire has returned, and Princess Celestia has given Twilight Sparkle an important task: to save the Crystal Empire. Along with her friends, they try to recreate the Crystal Fair that had lifted the spirits of the Crystal ponies so long ago. But when she finds the Crystal Heart, King Sombra's magic traps her at the top of the castle, and instead of realizing Spike can help, she gets too caught up trying to escape. The Crystal Heart is hidden once again, and Sombra has captured Twilight and Spike. Sombra's army grows, and the whole of Equestria must stand together to battle this ancient evil.
Basically, I like the Crystal War segment of the Season 5 finale so much, I created an AU.

yeah, i started this with the season premiere, mainly because i wanted to write down what was necessary so bronies didn't have to rewatch the episode to remember everything i'm talking about. the second chapter is where everything changes, but what use would Part 2 have if there was no Part 1?

6719957 yes, that was my goal when i started with the season premiere. if i'd just started at the point of touching the Crystal Heart, i wouldn't have established characteristics of the characters that i want to draw out later on. the second chapter will be a lot longer than the first, since that is when all the changes will be made, and that's when the first retaliation happens

If Princess Celestia requested that Princess Luna get help from Queen Novo and the Hippogriffs of Hippogriffia; why not have Princess Celestia ask her trusted ponies, such as Applejack and Rainbow Dash, to ask for help from Queen Novo in this alternative universe? You can rule that the Storm King has not attacked Hippogriffia yet. That means that Queen Novo would be more willing to aid Equestria against King Sombra's Crystal Empire.

there was a lot of new material introduced in the movie and prequel comic book. i doubt i'll be able to fit any of it in, unless i specifically focus on Sombra attacking one of those countries. at the end of this chapter i mentioned going east. in the map in the episode, Sombra's crystals stretched east across the Celestial Sea, and south, surrounding the main locations of the show
there's little indication if they stretched farther south than the Badlands and the Forbidden Jungle, and no way to know if they reached Novo and the hippogriffs. the Storm King would probably take personal offense at what Sombra's doing. at this point, it's all too complicated to figure out how to incorporate more than a mention for most of it later on, since we saw the map at a point many years into the war
