Does anyone else wanna b*tch-slap starlight to griffonia?
Cause I do.
8808395 She compared killing bandits who kill, rape, and pillage because they don't to work for themselves-at worst, I'd call their deaths "vengeful killings"- "genocide." Ya know, the term used as short hand for killing an entire species. I think we need something immensely more powerful than a btch slap to get through to her.
Then again, this is the same mare who decided to go to war against cutie marks just because her only friend was sent to a prestigious school soon as he got his. I don't think Starlight is mentally sound. In this or canon.
8808395 Given that history is written by the victors it's pretty easy to see starlight being resistant to information that contradicts what she has been taught. And massacres aren't exactly easily justified. A solution that no one talks about for the bandits is re-education. These guys have been trained from birth to be ruthless killers to ensure survival. So turning them into temporary slaves until they accept the new society they are being put in could fix the problem. Granted this solution is shaky at best and wiping them out is safer and easier option, but no one talks about it.
Man shy should have slapped her. That was a low blow.
Maybe starlight should see one of these brutes in person.
8808395 I agree that Starlight did go a bit overboard there, but that could also be due to the shock of having all that information dumped on her like that. Hopefully, after having some time to let everything sink in, she'll come around and make up with Fluttershy, and maybe even try to get to know the real Sombra.
8808457
Fluttershy’s issue with Starlight is that she isn’t presenting a solution. Sombra has something that works, bloody though it is. It is extremely effective. The only thing Starlight is contributing is “don’t do that” she doesn’t say how. Fluttershy straight up asks her what they should do instead of killing and Starlight says to just stop.
And sure you can re-habilitate them. Maybe. But while you’re doing that, you have to feed and shelter them when resources are tight, you need people to work with them, people to guard them, people to protect them from those who would seek revenge so you’re actually protecting attackers from their victims instead of the other way around, all while they want to escape so they can continue. Or, as Sombra does in this situation, you can spend five seconds of your time and never worry about them again.
Kindness does not equal gentleness. Sometimes it means doing what is best for those you can save.
Starlight caused multiple apocalypses, and yet she thinks war is unjustifiable? Hah!
Gotta say, really love how cunning and devious Fluttershy has become. She actually manipulated the treaty to prevent Sombra from harming her friends while snoring Celestia has a way to fight back against him if he were to do something unethical. It was great to see Fluttershy and Starlight debate about Sombra’s actions, though I’m surprised that Shy didn’t yell or hit Starlight for insulting her husband and baby-in-the-making. Th chapter was epic and I’m excited to see what’ll happen next.
8808395
well what if hitler suddenly came around and people were saying that he is not a genicidal rasist would you beliver them?
War. War never changes. I got a bad feeling about what she intends to do with that quill for some reason. Why did she raise it to her neck?
8808501
Quilt, not quill.
8808395
I want to do that every time she's on-screen or opens her mouth.
And Starlight, you are the one of the biggest hypocrites I've ever seen.
I have an advice for you, Starlight. If your dovish brain can't contribute to a solution, just shut up.
Seriously, nothing is worse than people with an holier than thou attitude who think they ate wisdom with a spoon, but have absolute zero ideas how to make a situation better. Such people or Ponies in this case will probably try to negotiate with those "poor bandits" and will be completely shocked when they are raped, enslaved or slaughtered.
Worse, it's exactly these guys who can only live out their pacifistic nature, BECAUSE they lived in a peaceful environment. They have absolute no idea how it feels like to starve, to be in major pain, to face death every day, to fight for your survival or to be forced to do what needs to be done. They lost all contact to the real world and live in their own little bubble of sugar and rainbows.
They take peace for granted, for the obvious way of living.
My bad
Next chapter, let starlight go to one of those compounds with no magic and see for herself what it’s like to “experience” some of their acts.
Of course Sombra would probably stop it and save her before harm came to her.
I'm confused as to why no one is bringing up Starlight's past misdeeds which were not only worse then anything Sombra's ever done but with less reason for doing them in the first place.
Hello, what is this? This looks positively fascinating.
You know what? Forget her! Hey Sunset! I got a deal for you!
I love how people don't seem to understand the problem here. Just because Starlight doesn't have a better answer doesn't mean Genocide is any less wrong.
8808595
Or just have her talk to the ponies who were effected. The servants the soldiers.
8808499
Except, you know, that despite his bloody and ruthless demeanor in this - he cares about what is his. He also despises murdering, enslaving, raping brigands, a.k.a. Raiders (for the Fallout-savvy). You cannot reason with those types.
In those kind of lands, rose-colored glasses that Starlight, Twi-twi, Moonie, and Shimmy are perpetually wearing will get you killed, raped, enslaved, or some combination of the previous three. Diplomacy does not work on the honorless, and Sombra is honorbound. Ruthless, but honorbound. Think clearly before making an analogy comparing Adolf Hitler to King Sombra ... one was a radical anti-Semite, the other was effectively a slightly less twisted version of the Minotaur.
8808622
Well, for one I think it's a toss up which is worse, genocide or mind control. It's kind of like the Dai Li and the Fire Nation in Avatar. The Dai Li brainwashed thousands of people into Jo Dees and such, but they weren't as bad as the Fire Nation, who killed of the Air Nomads. We might say bandits don't matter, but Equestrians apparently don't think like that. Also, I don't think anyone's bothered to read in Starlight on
Sombra's actual background. Whether or not that would change things is beyond me.
8808595
Not unlikely. Betting is even that she tries to run for it, and in that weather, she would probably go up to bandit camp and be thanking Celestia that she managed to find somebody. And then be promptly covered in chains after the bandits got over the shock of their next catch coming to them.
8808740
would the first king of rome be a better example then?
8808743
I was morose referring to creating several dystopian societies and almost breaking time unknowing or not.
Wow Glimglam. LITERALLY go to hell.
8808728
The problem here is that is no other way to help the slaves that the bandits have and talking to them aren't going to work.
While I think that Starlight could have been a little more tactful, I'm kinda with her on the bandits. Slaughtering those bandits denied them due process. Sombra is being a dictator here. Fluttershy is basically trying to justify taking someone's humanity away.
8808799
So imprison them. They're not monsters they aren't beyond reason.
8808807
That doesn't fix the problem. What happens when they leave? I know they will break out at some point and kill everyone in the castle. I won't add any more of this.
8808802
In a civilized land I would agree.
But there is no law here. Due process doesn’t exist and it’s more of a joke than anything.
Order must be established. When that is done, then comes law. If a bandit camp surrenders that is the true test. Will Sombra and Fluttershy execute them for being bandits? Or will they detail and rehabilitate?
8808799
You conquer them. Some of them probably die.
But when they're beaten, instead of going on a zero-tolerance rampage and slaughtering everyone, you imprison them, punish the *leaders* severely, and give the others a path for redemption.
Even Sombra spared that one kid who was basically forced into it -- most of the bandits were probably originally forced into it the same way. Most of them have since embraced the evil and done horrible things and can't just be forgiven out of hand, but that doesn't mean that there's no way to fix them.
That's how Equestria would handle it. Whether it would work better or worse, it'd be more in line with their morality and that's why Starlight doesn't agree with Sombra's methods. Neither of them was really making a coherent argument -- Starlight was just trying to get Fluttershy to acknowledge that genocide was bad (not usually something you have to argue!) and Fluttershy was rambling on about how the bandits were even worse.
And then they got angry and Starlight insulted her and there really was no point arguing after that, so it's probably a good thing that Fluttershy left.
"That's my husband you're talking about," Fluttershy said, it a tone that one could almost interpret as cautioning. "Look back at your own past before you cast your stones. You've no right to judge him."
Yes. Just...yes. Starlight should be in jail. It was only Twilight's mercy that spared her.
"Pacifism" is a synonym for "cowardice." Starlight is a coward too blind to see that evil must be sought out, rooted out and destroyed. I love how Fluttershy is defending Sombra.
8808802
Except in most feudal monarchy systems - such as what Sombra has carved out, due process literally DOES NOT EXIST. You judging the situation based on a modern ideal is called anachronism, and is somewhat wrong to do. Sombra is King of those lands. Not "Prince", King. His word is law. I'm sure the beginnings of Equestria's diarchy were much the same
8808746
If you are referring to Romulus, it is better to a degree, as the situations are similar - in that their fathers wanted them both dead, and the fratricide, and the founding of a nation in a broken wilderness.
And honestly, superimposing our modern ideals and customs onto the way Sombra does things is anachronism, which is wrong to do. Sombra is building a nation right now, and still conspkidating infrastructure.
Once he is able, a wise/wily King sets law, and codifies due process; THEN we can call him a monster for zero-tolerance slaughter. But when killing bandits, brigands, cutthroats, rapists, and other "Raider-esque" scum in a frontier city-state in its infancy is subject to frontier justice - look up the term "hanging judge" for a not-so-old depiction of that concept of justice
oi vey, glimglam you were so out of line there. Sombra should retract his offer. Give it to Sunset instead.
8808968
i wasnt trying to justtify sombras actions but now that you menchion it i recently watch extra credits videos on ghangas kon and which i made a connection while not 1 for 1 i think is a pretty good comparison to this story
8808887
True, True but going true pacifist is a problem in this case. In this case, Starlight is wrong -who was going to kill Sombra- when it came to the bandits.
I’d this is the reaction we get out of Starlight, I want to see the reactions we get from the rest of the would be assassins. Twilight has seen Sombra go to war with Celestia in an alternate timeline, but as a princess, should better understand the political issue that they’re currently in and would probably understand Fluttershy better than Starlight. In almost conplete contrast, Sunset would probably understand Sombra much more than the others due to her interactions with the human war while also understanding political ramifications due to her training under Celestia. Brilliant showing Mr. Boomstick, and I can’t wait for the next chapter.
8808988
I second the motion!
8808935
Starlight's argument is that genocide is wrong which it is, there's no justification for it. Starlight is wrong for not trying to understand the situation better but Fluttershy is wrong for trying to justify Sombra's actions by saying the people they slaughtered were "bad guys". What Sombra is doing is wrong to some extent, it's one thing to defend your self but Sombra is conquering the land by killing anyone who gets in his way.
The people he's killing are just trying to survive in a harsh environment sure some of them might be irredeemable scum but you can't just condemn an entire group to death and pretend it's just.
Fluttershy and Sombra are in the right Starlight is missing two important, thoughts environment and personality because for peace to even be considered the area would first have to be self-sufficient enough that food no longer becomes an issue and after that a peaceful solution can even be considered.
Yes!It is finally out, I have been waiting so long for this. YOU ARE THE BEST MIKE!!!!!!
8808988
Ditto.
Amazing how Starlight is still clinging to her beliefs after Fluttershy made several good points and reassured the safety of her friends (Who may undoubtedly make the same mistake once their strength has returned). Hell, she even called out Starlight's hypocrisy and she still decides to set Fluttershy off.
8808587 Basically this
Oh, dear Starlight, you are. You, Twilight, Sunset and Moondancer. You all wanted and honestly tried to kill Sombra with elaborated assasination attempt. Unsuccesful one only because Sombra is stronger, than you suspected. So you are killer, unsuccesful one, but you are in heart.
Edit: Also Starlight, you are f****ing hipocrite. You say, that killing bandits is unacceptable and evil solution of bandit trouble, but yet killing Sombra was a good solution of Sombra trouble? Because bandits were killed by villain Sombra, while you are heroes, so you can't have evil ideas? Feel like Knight Templaring by me.
Calling Sombra a monster is one thing, but calling the baby in the making, who have done no wrong, a cruel word is crossing the line Starlight. That and the baby was made after the wedding.
I like the way you wrote this chapter and I new starlight would resort to thinking fluttershy was manipulation.
Plz show her and her friends how wrong she is. I'm excited now because starlight roasted the fuck out of fluttershy and it hurt my soul, I kinda hope she gets shown how absolutely, 100% wrong she really is
8809342
OH, so fucking true. They are killers and laid out a very detailed plan to become killers.
Actually, starlight was defending bandits who raped, pillaged and killed, so she's insanely hypocritical for being ok with killing sombra.
He logic must be that bandits are not monsters, yet sombra is a monster, thus its OK to kill him
Silly logic tbh. And I hope she gets a massive, MASSIVE smack of logic to the face.
