Octavia is a young up-and-coming piano master, hailing from a Canterlot family who has bred some of the best piano players in all of Equestria.

Vinyl is a young, wayward unicorn, born in Ponyville. She's a troublemaker who loves music but can't find her instrument.

They come from entirely different circles. So how is that the two ponies who loathe eachother at first sight, come to help eachother gain their cutie marks; and maybe even become friends?

Hmmmm' Breach was following you. Good story, I really enjoyed this. It's a good story, and obviously those two are going to become fast friends. Can't wait to see it continue.

635962 I have the cutest scene in mind for how Octavia decides she doesn't want to play the piano any more. It's going to be d'aaaaw, I hope.

Sweeeeeet

Thanks For letting us in early btw

Oh why not? faved and liked.
Vinyl Scratch seems to have a lot of wisdom and wit. Slightly unusual compared to how she's usually portrayed.

love it good story i hope to see more

a couple spelling mistakes but this is a great story

Enjoying this. I can see why you're being watched. Great story, keep it up.

I'm seeing a side to Vinyl that a friend of mine had. It's that 'I'm me, and IDGAF what your negative opinions are. Now that that's out of the way, here let me help you' kind of attitude.
It's one I respect.

Oh my god my heart!

Beautiful story, very touching.

nice chapter again!

In the words of Captain 'Price': "Beautiful"

Adieu~

Wow. Just wow. That was incredibly well done.

I put off reading this for a while because I thought I was suffering from Vinyl / Octavia fatigue, and I really wanted to give it a fair, unbiased chance, since I really liked some of your other stuff. But I needn't have worried - this fic seems to have cured me!

The two of them work so well together, and you managed to put them in a setting that really allowed them to come alive, and make their interactions believable and meaningful. The musical themes were really fitting, credible and heartfelt. I honestly teared up a little in the second-to-last chapter, when Octavia finally played the cello. I could freakin' hear it in my head, man. I can often vividly picture a scene, but this is the first time I got some aural immersion going.

As for criticism.. hmm.. that's always hard when you really liked a story. But maybe, overall, I think your writing style might be a little too - how to put it - "business-like" in some parts? Like, I think the example that most stuck out for me is the way you frequently bothered to describe what the characters' ears were doing. I applaud this - they're ponies, after all, and all too often people forget to include their expressive ears and tails and whatnot in their descriptions, over-anthropomorphizing them. But you pretty much just.. mentioned them in a "her ears did so-and-so" style. Don't be afraid to throw a few more adverbs in there, guy! :yay:

I enjoyed reading this but I can't say that it is a wildly original concept.
It's the typical Vinyl is a troublemaker wisecracker who meets the insecure and snooty Octavia and they trade insults and finally by the power of friendship find their true path in life.
Trust me,it is still entertaining to see them spar with each other (and the ending was totally adorable) but I can't rave about it.

Don't worry though, you just keep writing regardless of what any random stranger says.

658815 I might do one with their roles reversed. Vinyl is a snooty upper class Unicorn, and Octavia is the rough-and-tumble earth pony :derpytongue2:

Now this I would read :rainbowlaugh:

Her body was a very light blue colour, and her

But her coat is white. :rainbowhuh: Like Rarity white.

Wonderful, very much enjoyed reading this.

Octavia is grey.

This was the best story ever. Really glad i read it. :D

...octy... is doctor whooves?:rainbowderp:755340

I'm liking this story so far. Only one problem- I'm pretty sure a fiddle and a violin are the same instrument. Other than that, I'm really enjoying it!

690848 Well actually Vinyl's coat is an extremely pale yellow, buts its so ridiculously pale its difficult to notice.

1390278
Yeah, no. That was the bullshit Hasbro tried to sell us us for absolutely no reason--I know no-one who actually goes with her having a yellow coat. Oh, and her eyes are magenta too, right?

The fandom characterized Vinyl and made her who she is, so of course Hasbro has to... change it for no reason. Right.

Her coat is white, and her eyes are red. That's how she was in the beginning, and we shouldn't let Hasbro fuck with it.

Moreover, just look at all her pictures--your profile image is a fine example. Go ahead and take a color sample with GIMP or Photoshop. Come back and let me know how much yellow you find.

1390382 You have a point, yes most of the fan made stuff pictures her as white, and I don't know of anyone who pictures her having a pale yellow coat either. First off I don't care about her eyes, I never said anything about them. They can be red, magenta, blue, green, pink, maroon, it doesn't matter to me. But hear me out on this. If you take a screen shot of the very first time she ever appeared in the show, season 1, episode 14, which came before any fan made depictions of her, and you take a color sample of THAT (as I have), it is a very pale yellow, and that is proven by the fact that it uses the hex triplet #FEFDE7. I'm going off of the absolute original appearance, not fan made stuff. The coat color isn't bullshit that Hasbro tried to feed us. Its legitimate. I just don't bother correcting people when they say its white because at first glance, yeah, it looks white. You told me to take a color sample, and I did, I found yellow. I tried to not come off as a dick for correcting you. If I seemed like an ass for what I said before, I apologize, I didn't mean to do that. But before you go being a general dick like that, make sure you have a full understanding of the arguement. Thank you and good day.

Just finished reading this.... I relate to Vinyl so much in this. I picked up piano years ago by ear and have no idea how to read music, but I play from the heart whenever I can sneak into the music room on campus.

All the feels from the last two chapter.

Ivo

Why does my heart feel so warm right now?...

Oh, I know:

I just finished reading an awesome story with a beautiful ending.
And, additionally, it´s the best Octavia/Vinyl-story I´ve read till now that doesn´t ship them. (I´m somehow bored of that...)

Well done, Sir!
Well done! :pinkiesad2:

EDIT: And I so totally love that cover-pic!...

A young brown pony was standing, stiff-backed at the piano,

This would be the part you are referring too? :raritywink:

I found this story to be a very fresh take on the classic Octavia/Vinyl ship. Sure, they have the same basic personality, but they way you handled it be making them discover their cutie marks together, and the unique handle on Octavia's backstory, it. . . worked. Better than most. Bravo.

Coat colour is also affected by lighting. I dont remember that exact scene you mentioned, but there is a chance that the light around her tinted her slightly. Think of it like when you are looking for paint for a room in your house - dont just look at the sample card in store, take a sample of the paint itself home and test it. The lighting in your house is different then that of the store, and the colour will look different.

Personally, I like the idea of Vinyl being pure white because it works for her in a DJ/rave setting. The blacklights and neon lights would cause her to glow, and that works really well in that situation.

The father is involved...oh dear:pinkiegasp:

1057859 They are the same. The names used refer to the style they are played in: fiddle for country- fast and energetic, violin for clasical- smooth and either somber or heart-breakingly beautiful

The piano's not the problem, Octavia. You're the problem!

A failed recital doesn't make a failed pianist. I don't see why Octavia has to adamantly give up her piano. Why can't she apply the way she plays the cello on to the piano?

I reject this notion of "every musician has their true instrument and you'll know after playing it a short time whether it is your true instrument". This notion completely ignores the musician that's learning the instrument and what she has to do when approaching her studies. One's success on an instrument is ultimately determined by the mental processes that the one applies to learning the instrument, and this notion of a true instrument is one of the most destructive beliefs to effective learning one can hold. It gives people a way to cop out, to shift the responsibility from themselves onto the instrument: Octavia's struggling with the piano? That's because it's not the right instrument for her; she just wasn't born with the piano gene or cutie mark.

The notion of the true instrument prevents her from even considering that the reason she's struggling may be the way she approaches piano playing, an approach that is fully within her capabilities to control and change.

Vinyl should have gotten more flak for infecting Octavia with this plague of an idea.

Other than this fundamental difference in philosophy, you've written a very well executed story.

5593725 Except we don't live in a world where cutie marks are a thing...

5593743
Mind elaborating on what you mean by that?

TO GOOD :yay:

658850 there is already an official comic about that

Cool story bro!

5593725
your forgetting one thing
music is life transformed in to sound
if you don't find an instrument you mesh with you will NEVER master it regardless o how much you practice
music is a spiritual thing not a logical thing
no matter how hard you try you will not be able to match the skill of someone born to do any particular thing
the world is not fair and no matter how much you want to believe hard work does not always triumph over talent
in fact it rarely ever does because most people with talent put a lot of work in to said talent

for example say Im a Piano player and I have a nack or "talent" for it but I also play a Oboe but I don't have a talent for the Oboe
and I practice both the same amount
I will be better at the Piano
every thing about it will be easier for me to learn and retain
and I will be good at the Oboe but nowhere near the same level as the Piano

its the same way for everything in life if you have a talent in it you will do better in it
its a fact of life

there's also a moral in this story that completely flew over you head and that's sad because its SO very obvious

- don't force yourself to do things that make you unhappy for the sake of others -
is one way it can be taken

oh and fyi all of those people that master there instrument had at least some talent in it
they also "found " it by trying many different kinds to see what ones they liked

The sensation of records hadn’t quite reached Ponyville just yet, and so all entertainment was live. There were talks of a single ‘turntable’ in Canterlot that a pony could put special flat discs on to to produce music. But it wasn’t a common technology yet, and definitely hadn’t made it down to Ponyville. And certainly not to student parties.

So how the hell did her parents come up with the name Vinyl Scratch?

Edit: Carpenters, her parents are carpenters aren't they?
