Feel incomplete, there was no resolution between Cadance and Shining Armor, and I would have expected some reaction from Twilight since it looks like her childhood and education and spot as "faithful student" were engineered in order to be Celestia's weapon.

You're definitely right on the first one, but that was intentional, albeit hackishly done. I wanted to keep the attention AWAY from Candyass|SA and keep it focussed on Twilight|Candyass. As for the second, that was meant to imply that she cared about Candyass not coming back an awful lot more. I'm sure she'll talk about that later, but that wasn't really the point of the piece, this was meant to focus on one thing and one thing only.

Oh God Celestia as Vetinari from Discworld... that's scarily appropriate (I mean, okay, it's sort of an archetype so totally possible that you weren't thinking of him at all and I only thought of him because I've been reading a bunch of Discworld lately. Still).
Anyway--I like it, but I have to echo Natzo's sentiment that it feels a little inconclusive. Like the story kind of tears open a wound without taking any real steps towards fixing it. I think it's honestly the combination of a sort of lackluster ending line (I mean, it's a fine piece of dialogue to go out on but for emotional weight it'd benefit from some description or something, for my money... so to speak), the dropping of Cadence's initial anger, and Shining Armor just sort of accepting the news without being bothered by it. I guess what I mean to say is there isn't really a conflict / resolution in the frame story, and it really helps to have that if you're going to end on the frame story (like, Princess Bride's frame story is pretty sparse, but it does have a conflict and a reversal so the ending feels like it wraps up nicely on all counts). Actually, in light of your comment on wanting to focus on Cadence and Twilight's issues, I think what would pull things together for me is a better reason why she didn't get in touch with Twilight after her journey was over, than just not wanting to disrupt her life. If she thought Twilight wouldn't want to see her again or something it'd help to get a stronger sense of that maybe, especially since that's really emotional for Cadence. Just the line of dialogue makes it feel tacked on "Oh right, and she hasn't shown up since because... yeah."

Still, a nice little sad story and the writing was really good. "Why can't you just be a proper storybook couple like you're meant to be!" got a laugh, and the rest of the story was kind of heartbreaking.
Also--is it weird that, based on the title and Cadence's suspicious "I'm sorry" to SA when they first met, that I was thinking time travel story? I must be watching too much Doctor Who (thought it would explain the sudden appearance of a brother and foalsitter for Twilight who we'd never heard mentioned before if they were in-universe retconned into existence by time shenanigans...).

Hrm. To be fair, this sort of thing is not really my cup of tea. Add into that the fact that I _really_ dislike people accusing Celestia of being a tyrant, and I'm afraid this story starts edging towards the negative side of 'not really fussed'. Besides which, this story feels incomplete, like it was merely the first chapter of a _much_ longer story.
I feel this, as I cannot help but think that there should be more outcry from SA that he was accepted into the Royal Guard solely for the purpose of removing him from Twilight's life, some from the Elements that their lives were manipulated (by whatever small degree) so that they would live in Ponyville, and a positive _furore_ from Twilight over the fact that her life up until Nightmare Night had been more or less scripted. I would have expected this to turn into an exploration of how such a revelation would affect their respective relationships.
And to justify my position on Celestia, 'tyrant' is a person who abuses their power for personal gain. It could be stretched to include those who abuse their power to grant boons to those they favour. It can _never_ be applied to a ruler who uses their power for the good of their subjects/nation, no matter how much of a jerk they may seem for doing so.

I liked this story. I do not read other people's fics unless they are good.
Short stories always seem to have more of a stronger emotion to it. Well it wasn't really that sad or dramatic as you intended I think.
I liked how you put some originality in Cadence's role in her foal sitting, giving her more fame.
So overall Nicely done.
