Hi! I'm a creative writer with a drive to become a better storyteller. :D

Can there be a sequel? This was really good.

I was quite taken with this story...it is a beautiful tale of friendship! Thank you for sharing it with all of us. You are becoming a very talented tale weaver! Well done! And just so you know, I did tear up at the end. That's how I know it was a great story well told.

5953939 Thank you so much for those kind words, and all the encouragement you've given me this far. As a storyteller, knowing that people are enjoying my tales is one of the best possible feelings--so it really means a lot. To be honest, this was one of the stories for Fimfiction.net I'd fretted over the most, because it focused around original characters and I hoped their personalities would come across well (not to mention making sure Piccolo wasn't too self-grading). Hah.

5952733 Hah. That might just be a possibility, and thank you! ^_^

You know, it's funny. When I saw the title, I was like, "Piccolo? From Dragon Ball? With Aria? From the Sirens? WHAAAAAT?"
:rainbowlaugh:
Great story though. Have a like! :pinkiehappy:

5955122 Hah! That is hilarious. I had no idea about those possible references. I'm so glad you both enjoyed the story, though! ;3

Short, lovely.

This.

This was very nice. A little predictable, maybe, but the descriptions were very well written and the depiction of Piccolo Song was endearing and that of Aria was an intriguing look at a matronly elder dragon the likes of which we haven't seen in the series. Overall, I'd say it was a very effective piece with a lot of heart. Nice work!

5957065 Thank you so much! These characters have been kind of bouncing around in my mind for a while, so I'm glad they came across well when written down at long last. ;3

This was a great little piece, and it has definitely left me intrigued to see more. I like the idea of Aria as an older dragon who feels abandoned by her kin, becoming more active now. Does she seek out that hooligan grandson of hers, Garble? Does she land on the roof of the Canterlot Opera house and listen in on the latest performance?

5965245 Ooh. You're giving me such good ideas for other possible story ideas! Actually, one of the inspirations for this tale was a series of specials that aired on the Disney channel several years ago called, The Railway Dragon. Have you ever heard of it? In those specials, a young girl stumbled into the cavern of an old dragon (who was at first terrified of her) and befriended him, during a time when most dragons were in hiding because people had hunted them for years. The main point of the show, though, was about believing in things, even if you couldn't see them. And unfortunately, it was one of those features that only seemed to come on once or twice on TV.

I might just have to get working on that sequel. ;3

5965925 I dimly remember something like the Railway Dragon. Either I saw it long ago, or I at least read a summary of it. It switched the threat from dragons to humans, which made it an interesting subversion. Speaking of an interesting subversion of the norm, I have seen the plot "pony accidentally stumbles upon lonely dragon" several times on this site. Your story is different, mainly for these lines in particular:

“Never,” Aria answered. “Dragons don’t often give each other presents such as you ponies do. We are known for our selfishness and greed, and especially in the world I lived in as a youngster our policy was to take or fight for whatever we wanted—even between kin. And when we got old or hurt, other dragons forgot about us.” At this, wistfulness and anger flared in her eyes. Then Aria stretched out one broad wing, and in the dimness Piccolo could just make out several tears in it, made as if (she noted) by great claws. But then, just as quickly, Aria’s anger seemed to dissolve, deflating into a great tiredness.

Most of the time, dragons are cast in this role as a plot device to encourage the pony in question to become brave, value their connections with their family more, etc. What makes your story different is the idea that in yours, the dragon also gets to feel this way. That they are not just greedy beasts civilized by the influence of a pony, but that they have their own regrets and relationships with other dragons.

I remember in dragon quest, Garble and his gang were murderous towards the phoenixes, and they made Spike go through difficult initiations to join them, but it did seem like they were planning to welcome him as a friend towards the end of the episode. I wouldn't be surprised if young dragons, even if they are generally greedy and aggressive, still form friendships, and even fall in love and form families. Of course, the way dragons seem to grow greedier with age, it seems like those relationships have a shelf life, and older dragons eventually live solitary lives, sleeping on their vast hordes. They are still sapient though, and even if they are too paranoid to allow other dragons near their homes, they can still feel loneliness, and longing for their family. It seems Aria has been inspired to buck this trend, and actively seek out those who have forgotten her because she has gotten old. That would certainly be a new take on MLP dragons.

5966285 Huh. Now I definitely need to seek out some of those other dragon stories, although at the core my intention was more a story of a young spirit like Piccolo finding her own strength and helping to reignite a spark of vigor (among many other things) in the heart of a tired old soul like Aria. And it had also always occurred me, like you mentioned, that after a certain period dragons must eventually lead solitary lives wrapped up in greedily protecting their hordes—and how sad that could be, especially in a world where the connections between all those in the land is such a vital part of their well-being. So I really wanted to have an instance where a dragon had an opportunity to form stronger bonds or have a happy ending on this front as well.

Besides that, to this point we haven’t exactly seen ancient dragons as such, unless it is assumed that large dragons like the red one seen in Dragonshy have been around since ancient times. I mean, at one point they show a dragon can speed up the maturation process depending on how greedy he or she gets, or how much they collect. Although, I don’t think we’ve ever really gotten how long it takes most for dragons to grow up.

Spike’s adventure during the dragon migration really does unleash many potential questions, though. I agree that they would probably at least form relationships long enough to have offspring or between each other, such as was shown with the teenaged dragons. They were ruthless to other creatures they considered outside their circle, yet they still interacted with each other and were willing to accept Spike if he chose to follow their rules.

5970518 I kind of assume that the large dragons we saw are hundreds of years old, maybe even a millennium. Besides the fact that D&D dragons live many centuries, and MLP dragons seem to be based heavily on MLP dragons, the fact that a dragon was going to take a "100 year nap" suggests to me said dragon lives much longer than a century. And yeah, I think you have a great handle on dragon relationships.

5970535 That's a good point! If dragons are taking 100-year naps, then that gap of time probably doesn't bother them too much because of their long lifespans. So the dragon Fluttershy saw could have been around for thousands of years and still be relatively young. In any event, it would be nice to see another dragon-focused episode eventually. Hah.

5972853 I'm in the minority here, but I actually liked the comic that introduced a dragon-enclave in Fillydelphia. It gave dragons interesting culture, and even a strong female dragon to contrast with Spike, though it does clash significantly with what we've seen from dragons on the show itself.

5974884 That was an interesting comic, and it does add a different dimension to dragons in their world. There is also this implication that the dragons who decided to settle down in the city were treated so a great deal of suspicion, and pretty much segregation by ponies (or, at least, the police force). So it feels a bit reminiscent of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, where most people both liked and got intimidated by toons at times because of their abilities and characteristics. And Spike has to act like the bridge between the two sides.

Of course, does this mean that certain dragons only grow, and can choose to grow, to a certain size? Most of the ones introduced in show as adults are huge, although greed speeds up the process even for baby dragons. It's definitely a thought.

5977360 The size difference is definitely the sticking point for a lot of people with that comic. I suppose maybe the idea is that the natural size of an adult dragon, sans-greed growth of any kind, is the size of Garble and his friends. On the other hand, we have met multiple adult dragons the size of a rail car, who are greedy jerks, but seem fully sapient, unlike greed growth-Spike. Maybe over time "feral" dragons like the red and green ones we've seen learn to control (but not eliminate) their urges. Perhaps if Spike had not reverted through an act of extreme will/generosity, he would have wandered into the mountains, and if left alone, would have mastered the emotions of his new form in a century or two.

I will point out though, that dragons don't just age up to adulthood at pony rates and then freeze. Spike is a "baby" dragon, but he's over ten years old. I would wager Garble and the other "teenage" dragons were between 50-100 years old. Perhaps the group of dragons in Fillydelphia is a pack of teenagers who moved there a few years ago, but because of their glacial rate of aging, no one has grown to large to live in the city yet.

My personal mental reconciliation is that a group of peaceful young dragons traveled to the Great Dragon Migration in season 2 from the Mild West (we know there are some benevolent dragons in the Mild West because the Buffalo respect and honor dragons, and they wouldn't do that if the dragons they met were all jerks.) They were disgusted with the behavior of their fellow dragons on display, and decided to try living with ponies for a while, so they used some of their hordes to buy out a neighborhood in Fillydelphia. If the dragon neighborhood is brand new, it would explain why Twilight doesn't have any textbooks on dragons in season 2, and it also explains the distrust of the ponies and the police force. (This comic definitely reminded me of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Does that make Mina Jessica Rabbit?)

5977413 That’s a good point. We don’t know, at this point, exactly what might influence a dragon’s growth or what would be considered natural in terms of this for their race. But if they are able to control their urges, perhaps they would grow or stay at the sizes seen in the dragon town neighborhood.
The thought many of those inhabitants could be teenagers (or at least closer to that age range) is another possibility. Although, some of the dragons the Spike did speak with on their front doorsteps did appear to be adults (one was even a mother with a child). Still, perhaps the controlling their urges could be the closest solution to why they are able to live in that city environment as opposed to needing to move elsewhere like other dragons.

Actually, it really makes sense that the neighborhood in Fillydelphia would be that new (and great reminder of the fact the Buffalo respect dragons in the Mild West). This was the impression I’d kind of gotten from this comic as well. In addition, in Equestria, you would think it might not take as long for the ponies and dragons living in such conditions to begin building more bridges between each other, or being at least used to each other’s presences (and yes, maybe Mina would be Jessica Rabbit—and Spike would be Roger Rabbit, I guess).

I've been reading through the comments and have found a lot of interesting information. To be honest, for one of the stories I'm writing, this story was actually pretty helpful. It gave me a look into dragon life, whether it's cannon or headcannon. One of the characters in my story is an eastern dragon, modeled after a Chinese dragon. Since I wanted the lifestyles of the two dragon species to differ greatly, I read this story once again, and I was reminded of how much it went into depth of dragons.

6055525 Aw~ Thanks! It really means a lot to hear that you have gotten a lot of great information out of the comments for your own story (and, of course, howard035 brought up so many great points on dragons as well). I love it when posting things can lead to really in-depth discussions on subjects like dragons in Equestria. You get to hear different viewpoints, and it is very inspiring. ^_^ Good luck with your story. I look forward to reading how you handle the distinct types of dragons, and how their backgrounds or lifestyles affect them.

In my story, the concept of dragons isn't going to take center stage, but Ning Jing, an eastern dragon, is playing a major character. I could tell you so much about her, but I already wrote a 1,000+ word chapter about a conversation she had with Spike. The story itself is called "G4mat: the Island," and there are a lot of "4matted" G3 characters present, including Kimono, who's visiting from Equestria's equivalent to Japan/China. She and Ning only recently made an appearance, but they're going to play a major part in the future. And I'm planning to write another story rotating around them.

6055659 Wonderful! I will have to read your story, and meet Ning Jing. :pinkiehappy: And good luck again with your story revolving around her. It is great to see different interpretations and perspectives on dragons in Equestria. ;3

A sweet little fic.

6142310 Aw~ Thank you very much! And thank you for the "like" as well. ;3

I want to know what type of deal you had to make pt write such wonderful stories!

7994457 Hah, thanks! I made a lifelong deal to read a lot and write a lot. Although I still have a lot to learn. ;3
