Voldyne

E

Live's well lived, friendships, rivalries and companionship; Twilight Sparkle has known many variations and forms of friendship, but what Twilight wants to know is 'Why me? Why did Celestia make me an Alicorn?'

The Answer is more surprising then she thinks.

Inspired by various FIM fiction pieces. A What-if this is the reason.

An interesting aspect of immortality that also rings true psychologically.
It's a lot easier to deal with your friends dying of old age while you stay young if your not continuously faced with the question of why you're different.

5737331 So far that hasn't bothered me in the least. :trollestia:

"Okay... but how did you know I was going to become an Alicorn?" Hoof meets face, and Celestia groans.

"Right, that well I have known since I met you all those years ago, when you were taking your test to enter my school."

"That blood test you had to give? We tested your aliclorian count. They're those little germs that give you access to the Rainbow Force. It was over 9,000! So, alicorn!"

"Wait... becoming an alicorn is basically a INFECTIOUS DISEASE?!"

"Yes! And what's better, the little germs COMMAND you to spread it... their tiny voices whisper into your mind at night..." :pinkiecrazy:

"That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. It's like the plot of that stupid Mare Wars prequel se- ... you're messing with me again, aren't you..." :facehoof:

"U mad, Twilight?" :trollestia:

At the end. Is Twilight trying to tickle Celestia or ripping out her own feathers because she "cheated"? :pinkiecrazy:

5737928 Hmm, it was to be a tickle attack, but I really didn't elaborate.

I find the "you come back even if you die!" part to be incredibly, incredibly horrifying. It's one thing to have an effectively unlimited life--outliving others sucks, yeah, but if life doesn't get around to offing you like everyone else who doesn't die of old age, eventually the sun will explode and you'll be disintegrated and can have a much-delayed retirement into the afterlife. Actually being unable to stay dead is nightmarish.

Jumping into lava over a bet is hilarious, btw.

5739369 True, but who says their isn't a way to off themselves, they may simply be tied to the sun, or moon... Destroy those and then they can die... of course you would have to kill everyone everywhere to kill Cadance and Twilight(Sadly I think I made Twilight a super god, in my head she is tied to Magic not so much The Magic of Friendship(But if she was, then yes killing everyone everywhere would also let her die)). And then there is the whole no sun/moon = Equs? Planet that Equestria?(Don't really know the name) resides on would freeze over and die... well that's a morbid tangent.

5739401 Well, once you start messing around with soul magic you could possibly isolate the "alicorn-ness" and relocate it, either into another pony or into the object itself (possibly making Love itself self-aware :rainbowhuh: ) It is also possible that Magic and Love, at least, could continue to exist without their respective alicorns, as they were still around before Cadance or Twilight showed up. It is a lot easier to see the Moon and Sun ending with Luna and Celestia, but they were still ordinary ponies before becoming alicorns and if unicorns were ready then they could pick up the burden of the heavenly objects right away.

It's also possible that they could create a magical construct to maintain control over their concept (I have some headcanon that this is what happened to other alicorns--there are a number of magical artifacts scattered around every that maintain Time, Space, Happiness, Hate, Music, etc., that were either intentionally created or spontaneously came into existence when the immortal in question stopped desiring to live)

Setting concerns about the rest of the world aside, a study into death magic might reveal a type of death much more thorough than just plain old dying.

5739461 I love possibilities, I love what ifs and everyone's take on the mechanics of a fandom (not just MLP). The what is; is normally great, but the what ifs are always fun (especially when you have so many random and creative people thrown into the mix). I also agree, A study of death magic is in order... just no necromancy, okay maybe a little. I have given a very tales of the Malazan approach on Cadance and Twilight. Seats of power that can be claimed, as each did. They could be stolen maybe? that would be a cool story, but once claimed the ponies on the throne are tied to universe, there is no abdication, mostly due to the fact that they had no idea they had claimed the thrones maybe it's a soul thing. Ganoes Paren and deck of Alicorns! All of this would call for a far more in-depth story then what my brain demanded at 4 in the morning.

5739515 A simple twist of Greek is all you need to get out of that necromancy nastiness!
"-mancy" doesn't actually refer to magic or controlling something; it actually refers to a form of divination. Necromancy is predicting the future by speaking to the dead, pyromancy is divining the future by observing fire, etc. Time has sort of muddled the meaning.
"Necros" would, rather than "death", be closer to "the dead". "Thanatos" is more about death itself.

Now "-urgy", that is a word for working something (ex., "thaumaturgy", the working of miracles). If you wanted a word for the magic of death, a good term would be "thanaturgy", the practitioners of which would be called "thanaturges".

I have not read the Malazan series, but perhaps I need to.

5737331 And later I thought to myself 'But Voldyne surely Twilight would ask Celestia about it, and then she could explain it all....'

I'm not sure how you can break so many rules, and still turn out a somewhat decent fic. This isn't of the quality where I would upvote, but this certainly doesn't deserve a downvote.

I think all you really needed was an editor.

6170854 Often found that I'm terrible at rules, and your probably right.

What's up with levitating the feathers into the air part?

Also good story.

6895075 Tickle attack... I should have elaborated.

:trollestia:jejeeje go twilight go go:twilightsheepish:

And this is why I like Twilight X Luna, Twilight X Celestia (especially Celestia), or Twilight X Cadance and the reason why is because there all immortal, I don't like stories that features Twilight with a mortal because you know Twilight is going to live on while that mortal dies and will result with her being heartbroken, especially with her friends slowly dying around her as well.

But if Twilight loves an immortal than it becomes wholesome and when her friends die that immortal will be ale to comfort her, kinda like this story but no really.

Basically immortal X lover = depression, possibly anger, sadness, and loneliness.
Immortal X Immortal = eternity of happiness.

I would recommend adding a romance tag, Celestia and Twilight being mare friends was unexpected but not unwelcomed. Anyways great story.
