While visiting Manehattan, Applejack pays a visit to her Aunt and Uncle Orange and Babs. They're delighted to hear from their famous and ennobled niece, but Babs isn't. At all.

An excerpt from a longer story, Manehattan Madness, and as such a sequel to Wolf in Pony's Clothing

Serious Stuff

As everyone knows, AJ can out-sophisticated the sophisticated when she wants to do so. But there's a difference between doing so to twit one's best friend, and doing so to make a good impression on your close kin. You caught that well here.

“And helping the Princesses, too, yes?” Aunt Orange asked, her voice somewhere between glee and awe. “I mean, you did save all of Equestria several times over since we last met. Nightmare Moon, Discord, Chrysalis…

Skipping over Aunt Orange's later attempt to try to hog all the glory on AJ's behalf, you're definitely right that the Oranges would be incredibly proud of Applejack's deeds -- and far more likely to boast of them than would be AJ herself.

Applejack wondered just what Twilight and especially Rainbow Dash would think of being referred to as her sidekicks.

I'm guessing that this is before Twilight's Ascension, then.

Part of her wished Dash especially was here to hear it. The wiser part of her felt relief that she’d never know.

That would be an interesting scene. In all senses of the word "scene."

And you, talking like you were from Six Points, running with the Dead Rabbits!”

As a native New Yorker, I salute you for the Ponified historical reference

On the genealogy -- I have Applejack's parents as Melanie Rose ("Melrose") Apple and Tangelo Orange, operating under my matrilocal and matrilineal assumptions Melrose married Tangelo who then moved to Sweet Apple Acres to raise their family, and near that farm both died when their children were still young. Moseley Orange would under this logic be either the brother of Melrose or Tangelo, who married Aunt Orange and either took her name or was already her cousin. I see you have Babs being their daughter, which is admittedly the easiest way to explain the relationships.

Incidentally, I am in the process of assembling a large and complex Apple Family genealogy, based on hints from the episodes and fanon I've mined elsewhere. It includes how they are related to the Pies -- through the Golds -- specifically, Goldie "Granny" Pie, mentioned in passing in The Elements of Harmony, and given larger roles as the leader of the good-girl cultists at Dunnich in An Extended Performance and as the Friend of Paradise who (unsuccessfully) tries to trigger a Heel Face Turn in Noble Demon Princess Cetymi in Collateral Damage, and Goldie Delicious (from "Apple Pie") are named after their common Gold ancestry.

Since the Apple Clan dates back, in one or another form, four thousand years to the Cataclysm, and are in recognizable Apple form by the defeat of Discord, fifteen hundred years ago, this is of course only a very incomplete, local and recent geneaology, going back no more than two hundred of those years save in very fragmentary form. Their ultimate ancestry derives from G2 Sweetheart the Healer and her husband Teddy, who lived before and survived some time after the Cataclysm, and are ancestral to many later families, including the Apples and the Hearts.

Typos

Applejack looked up at the three-and-a-half-story brownstone before her; it seemed smaller than she remembered it. Ah was just a filly back then.

Second sentence here is AJ's thoughts and should prolly be italicized.

Oh, and I like the multi-species group that Babs Seed is forming. I see a spinoff series in that.

4338653 Thanks for pointing out the typo, I'll fix that right now.

Thanks as well for your other kind words, I'm very glad you like this story so much. Technically, though, it's only a part of a chapter set within a much longer story -- though given the difference in tone between this and the rest of the story, I wonder if I should keep it separate.

And with Twilight and her ascension; well, my editor/co-author doesn't like her as an alicorn. It's unlikely to ever happen in this alternate Equestria (much like the liberation and redemption of Discord), though I did have her as an alicorn in 'Night at the Fights'.

Thanks for the comment on the Dead Rabbits. I read Asbury's Gangs of Old New York years ago and it impressed me, and I thought a Manehattan story would be a good place to use them. Though I rather doubt the Equestrian street gang is as brutal and savage as their real-world inspiration!

I'm guessing that this is all part of the story you showed me a fragment of with Fancy Pants, Fleur and a certain mistress of disguise from Canterlot, am I right?

4366099 Yes, it most certainly is. It may be a little while yet before that story gets posted here, however.

Very nice read with a good flow to it. I haven’t expected it to take the path it did, but that’s not a bad thing. The ending leaves a bit to be desired though—I understand this was taken from a longer story, but maybe it could have been wrapped up a little better.

I'm glad you liked what you did of it and that you commented on it.

As for the ending, yes, it's rather abrupt. All I can say is that this was the best I could manage for this story.
