Nightmare Prose

Still idle, though.

E

Lucky Clover's marriage to Wild Fire is near a breaking point despite their attempts to rekindle the flame. He is desperate enough to buy a love potion despite their conflicted reputation. Even that may not be enough, for Wild Fire has a secret that could change everything.

Top 5 finalist in The Writer's Group September 2013 contest. Chosen prompt: "It is the third dinner date between two characters. One is internally debating whether to use a love potion, while the other has something to confess."

Given the author's note and dat twist, methinks there needs to be a sequel involving Cadance, Lucky, and Wild Fire learning the responsibilities of love magic. The whole question of how much of love is chemicals and how much is something deeper is an interesting topic, especially in a magical world where your heart can choose your chemicals (or others can choose them for you :twilightoops:)

As for this story, it was decent. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of the prior relationship, so I could get more invested in the characters and their particular circumstances, but the story had it's focus where the focus was promised: on Lucky's choice, and I can't fault it for that. It is what it is: nothing more, nothing less, but enough to do what it needed to do and leave an impact.

I voted for this story for the Writer Group's contest. Sad to see it didn't win. But great story.:pinkiehappy:

Yay you posted it!

Love is definitely a complex subject, even without it being a source of magical power. I'm not sure if I'll ever tackle a sequel given how many other projects I've got right now, but we'll see!

And yep, I totally waited until the last minute to hammer it out basically wanted to keep it short and sweet. Next time, though...

Thank you for the vote and fave! Apparently I was mere votes away from making it, too. :fluttershysad:

I did indeed!

Decently written, but with a relatable plot (despite the plot hinging on the use of magic). It was short, concise, neat, and not too much or too little in the narrative department. Whatever you're doing, don't stop doing it.

Thank you! I'll do what I'm doing as best I can, if not better every time.

I liked this quite a bit, and was surprised that it didn't place. (In my head, Faster should have won the whole thing, but I was damn sure you were going to get in the top.)

That ending... Oh my gosh... :rainbowderp:

That was a fantastic story! For whatever reason, failing relationship stories have a special place in my heart. I think it's much more interesting than characters falling in love because they have every reason to fall apart, rather than everything falling neatly in line. This was one of those stories that encapsulates that struggle.

What surprises me most is that it pulled off the love potion plot device. It wasn't a clear-cut debate on whether it's acceptable to use or if it should be used, which is normally how it's treated. It wasn't a certain solution to their problems, and it raised the question of whether the marriage was even worth saving.

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it, and that the love potion plot worked as intended. They're usually either played for laughs or just straight-up used, and I wanted to take a deeper look.

And in my mind, it probably wasn't worth saving in the long run. Cadance's love spell only lasted so long before the underlying issues surfaced again. Sometimes things just don't work out, but you gotta move on.

I've got an idea brewing now about a failing relationship, but that's about all the similarity to this one. Hopefully, it's just as good. :raritywink:

What's interesting to me is that they did try to work it out, which suggests to me that they have at least a little hope of making it. I don't see relationships as truly ended until one or the other decides that the relationship's not worth fighting for. Sometimes it's obvious when it won't work out, though.

This was one of the saddest things I've read lately. And yet... I'm smiling. A welcome incoming of feels, I suppose.

The was so sad, and yet, so mysterious, what I mean is, are they never going to see each other again? Was that really they're final farewell? Does she go after him or do they gone on they're own paths? All these questions came from this, I hope you might make a sequel to this to answer those. But if not, I guess you could say that this was a dead end relationship.:fluttershysad:

Great story and great title :raritywink:
