Immortality and Death

Through the mist and rain, a purple mare could be seen in dark clothing, still standing in the cemetery. The precession had long since past, in which only the closest friends of the recently deceased had attended. While staring at the five headstones, another mare, dark blue in color, had come up behind Twilight. For the longest of times, neither would speak, remaining in silence as the heavy rain continued. Then, just as the night started to arrive, Twilight started to leave, with Luna close after, both heavy with the grief of the loss of those that had gone. They walked in silence all the way back to Canterlot. It seemed that on this day, even Mother Nature wallowed in sorrow for the element bearers.

As they approached the royal gardens, Twilight suddenly stopped, and then, just as suddenly asked in a quiet voice “Why was I turned and they weren’t? They had done as much good as I, been through all the ordeals that I have, and yet I am the one forced to live eternally, knowing everyday that I will no longer see Rainbow Dash fly with Scootaloo through the open skies, watch as Rarity create a dress as Sweetie Belle frolics around the store, see Fluttershy attend to her animals, watch as Applejack and Applebloom play with Winona, or see Pinkie Pie hop to greet another pony as they enter Ponyville? Why, if an alicorn is so great, could we not turn them as well, or at least extend their time in Equestria?”

As Twilight spoke, Luna would not reply. She stood there, hanging her head in shame, knowing that though the young alicorn had known this day would come, nothing could prepare her for when it would truly happen.

“Why?” Twilight asked one final time. Luna could only remember how as a young foal, she had asked her mother, Solace the same question, “Why?”. Though Luna owned the darker side of life, not even she could know the answer.

Luna and Twilight once again became shrouded in silence. After what had seemed like forever, Twilight asked, “Could I...could I stay with you tonight? I don’t want to be alone...” Luna, understanding the pain of being torn and abandoned, agreed.

As they entered from the gardens, Celestia rose from where she sat, but before she could start to walk towards them, a single remorseful look from Luna made her decide against it. Celestia knew as well as her sister that the first time would be the hardest, but also knew that Luna, having been alone for a thousand years and to have never gotten the chance to say goodbye to her own friends, would relate to Twilight better than Celestia could at the moment. As the years went by, all of Twilight's friends continued to grow and laugh knowing only the pleasures of life that came. But, as they grew older, and had children of their own, Twilight continued to keep her youth. Even though Twilight could see these changes that came upon her friends and not her, she tried her best to remain oblivious to the truth. Celestia and Luna had already grown hardened to the facts of life, learning to remain close to their subjects while avoiding intimate relationships with any.

Luna and Twilight continued down the hallways of the castles. With each turn, the usually bright and festive corridors started to feel empty and hollow. They entered Luna's room just as the moon began to reach its peak. As they lay together in bed, Twilight shuddered, and started to silently cry. To comfort her, Luna laid her wing over the small lavender alicorn. Twilight, now feeling like a small foal curled up to Luna as a newborn would to its mother. Luna whispered to Twilight “Friends are like flowers, dear one beneath my dark wings. They blossom, then die.”

Twilight then asked, “Will I always be alone?” After a few moments, Luna replied to her, “Neigh, small one. Though our little ponies will come and go as time passes, I will always remain here, with you. Thou shall never be alone, for I will never leave your side.”

Even though Twilight was in such a state of sorrow, it did not take her long to understand what Luna’s words indicated. A little taken aback, she asked the princess how long. “How long have we loved thou? We had loved you since we met you on Nightmare Night, all those years ago. You were the only one who had seemed to care for us, who hadn't ran from us at the first sight of us, who had put any effort in trying to learn the real us. When the world hated us, you were our shining star, gleaming through the twilight. Of course we love thou.”

“Why didn’t you tell me Luna?”

“ We had never knew how to tell you... Our time on the moon had caused us to become meek. We feared to know your response, for if you were to abandon us, we would have lost the only friend we had. If it was not for you, we would have been completely alone in this world.”

“If I had known! You wouldn’t have had to feel as alone as you did! I too loved you, as I still do...”

Twilight moved closer to the mare, feeling safer, knowing that she would never be alone again.

“Luna, promise me you will never leave. Promise me that even when all of the joy and happiness leaves this world, you will continue to be there for me...”

“I promise to never let you feel alone again. You will never have to live feeling that the world has left you behind, for I swear to stay with thee, no matter what time will bring.” Luna said, as she nuzzled Twilight, who was now slipping into slumber’s sweet, warm embrace. As the night wore on, Twilight and Luna would not leave each other, knowing that they would never be lost or alone again.

Author's Note:

Inspired by Haiku of the Alicorn by Aegis Shield: http://www.fimfiction.net/story/82276/1/haiku-of-the-alicorn/haiku-of-the-alicorn

PS: I had recently started reading some fanfiction and so decided to try it out on my own. I had always felt that it would be similar to this had Twilight been placed in this situation, and so when I saw Aegis’s poem I thought that i should try to combine his ideas with my own and I ended up with this. At some point of time i did actually add in a stanza from the haiku. So yeah, this is the first one I wrote and I was hoping that maybe you guess could leave some hints in the comments on how or what I could do in my next one. Also, if Aegis wants me to take this down, then I'll go and do that. :3

A few minor errors, but nothing big. A fine tale.

I... It.... What's the point? What's to read, you just spoiled the entire story right in the Description. I'll just have to come back to it in a few weeks when I forget about it, and remember not to reread the Desc...

Yeah...I'm sorry but the random people kept telling me that I had to give a detailed description to put it up. Its because of things like that that I avoid reading the description. Sorry :facehoof:

Well, I have to say, you made a story that was fairly good, and given a little extending on details, could become a slight bit more. The premise was promising, and could make a smooth transition. My only downfall for this story is the emense rushing. You could take it so much farther. With more detail you could extend it, make it better. With more time you can develop the feelings between the two to a more reasonable amount. And given that even without these two elements you can still make it an enjoyable yet short read means you have a lot of potential for this. I look forward to future writings.
