It's time for the annual Ponyville Fair, and Storm Streak is excited to finally ride the Leviathan! Unfortunately, excitement turns to despair when he finds he is too young and has to miss out. Even with some encouragement from his father, Stormy wishes to be older so he could get his way. News of a powerful artifact with the ability to change someone's age sends Stormy on a search for it, but using its power will come at a great cost.

After a chance encounter on a train to Trottingham, a vacationing Fluttershy finds herself mistaken for the mysterious La Mariposa, a notorious mercenary master-of-disguise. As a result, Fluttershy is drawn into a world of secret agents, murderous henchponies, and monologuing villains.

Fluttershy, however, has absolutely no idea what's going on.

Magic.

For a long time, true magic was the domain of the unicorn nobility, or those few foals that were talented enough to be taken in as apprentices by accomplished wizards. Slowly, as civilization advanced and the masses were able to afford schooling for everyone, access to learning magic became ubiquitous.

However, just like in the old days, the mages still were a minority amongst unicorns - far from everyone was interested in studying for years or decades to become one, after all. Another holdover from the old days were the mage tournaments - a bit less fierce than the ones in the days of yore, but still enthusiastically participated in by proud unicorns wanting to show off their skills.

However, one day, the ancient traditions are shattered when a pegasus enters a mage tournament. And not only is he capable of holding his own, much to everyone's surprise, he even becomes the champion...

Right after meeting with Twilight Sparkle and Spike, King Scorpan is attacked by his vengeful brother Tirek who immediately assumes control of the Midnight Kingdom. While Twilight and Spike try to muster the Elements of Harmony, the Cutie Map calls Flurry Heart to solve a friendship problem in the very place that is currently having a clash of titans: the Midnight Kingdom. To make peace between the brothers, she must first locate an old familiar relic that may be the key to Tirek’s redemption.

A young unicorn named Nightwatch is venturing out in the forest one day when he finds a mysterious egg. His life changes instantly when the egg hatches and reveals a baby female dragon that quickly imprints on him. He takes it back to his parents and convinces them to adopt the dragon which he names Buttercream. Nighty and Butter grow up as brother and sister, having many adventures and getting into all sorts of shenanigans. Their first adventure starts on the night of the return of Nightmare Moon, where they encounter a cult of fanatical bat ponies, a dark society of Tambelonian sorcerers, Princess Luna herself, and a deadly ancient robot on the loose. This sets the stage for a whole slew of adventures the sibling duo go through while a certain purple unicorn and her friends have their experiences on the side.

The first two chapters of this story start about 10 years prior to Nightmare Moon's return and the rest runs alongside the events of the official show. Matilda was one among many griffons sent as tribute after Equestria defeated Gryphonia in a great humiliating battle. There she is put to work the great boilers of Canterlot Palace from morning till evening, constantly providing hot steaming water for the day's use.

Flurry and her friends get a chance to vacation in Southern Equestria with Spike, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, and Mrs. Cake. After meeting Somnambula, they are immediately thrown into adventure and peril when she finds a map that leads them to a cave in the desert mountains. Inside is an ancient temple where Somnambula is to meet an "old friend" as the map describes. What they don't know is this temple is booby-trapped and this mysterious correspondent is not here to be Somnambula's friend at all...
