She could conquer, and continue to be hated. She could put aside her pride, and be redundant. Or, she could disappear, and fade into the glorious night.

AN: While Princess of Equestria takes place before this, neither are required reading for the other. Rather, they complement each other.

This story is a sequel to The Hardest Goodbye

After deciding to run away to the Badlands in order to try and find his destiny, Spike encounters the old villain, Nightmare Moon. After an unsuccessful attempt to posses him, Nightmare Moon is now stuck in his head.

Spike, number one assistant to Princess Twilight Sparkle, close contacts to the Elements of Harmony Bearers and to the other Princesses. He is even praised by the Crystal Ponies for saving their empire! He must have a great life right? If so, then why does he feel so left out? So he sets out, only to be faced with an extra passenger.

Spike makes a new friend in the form of Kevin the Changeling. However, he is met with a lot of chagrin from the Crystal Empire. When Twilight caught wind of this, she too confronts Spike over him making friends with a Changeling.

Spike has always felt a certain sense of distance from Twilight and her friends. As much as he loves them, he's never felt like he belonged with them.

So, when Luna and Celestia offer him a way to find himself, a way to temper his metal in the fires of battle, he takes them up on it. How was he to have known this was simply the beginning of the end?

With great fear and excitement in his heart, Spike makes a sacred voyage to the home of the ancient Dragons and learns a thing or two about himself.
