Prologue: The story

View Online

A small fire sparkled in the corner, illuminating the room and giving warmth to its inhabitants. Seated nearby sat an old unicorn stallion reading a newspaper. “Grandpa!” Two smiling foals came running into the living room. Folding the paper with his magic, the stallion smiled at the bubbling energy that began to permeate the air. The two foals weaving to and fro around the furniture.

“Ah, my little munchkins. What brings you to this fine room tonight? Have I missed supper again?” asked the stallion as he placed the paper down on a light stand.

“Nope, but Momma said you seemed extra lonely today and told us to tell you to tell us a story! And not just any story, but the story!” exclaimed one of the foals, bouncing up and down, filled with the giddy exuberance any filly her age would have.

“The big one of your life, the great war and stuff. The one you never tell us,” added the other, his smile wide as his eyes lit up.

“Ah. That story, well… that is a very long tale to tell, and I doubt your mother would appreciate me keeping you two here for such a time,” replied the stallion softly, the corners of his mouth twitching with a hint of a smile at his grandchildren's eagerness. “Plus, this story is not like the ones I have told in the past. There are certain events that youngsters such as yourselves should not hear.”

“Well, Momma thinks we are old enough, and you have to tell us sometime! We want to hear it now! We can’t handle the suspense and mystery anymore, and no one ever tells us,” they both said, dancing back and forth around the room. They then moved to sit in front of him, each giving their best puppy eyes. Something told the unicorn that they had rehearsed this many times before confronting him. And emboldened with their mother’s blessing, there would be no way to convince them otherwise.

“Very well, but I cannot tell you the whole story today. Therefore, I want you both to promise me something. Promise me, that wherever I stop, you will not complain. Whether it be a cliffhanger, a momentary lapse in battle, or midway through a conversation, you will not demand more. This truly is a long story. I will tell this tale in parts, and there is a reason why this is important. Each part has pieces of detail that, once combined, will yield a clear picture. Do you promise you will be patient in my telling?”

The two foals were virtually bouncing off the walls. They whooped and hollered, laughing and clopping their hooves together before remembering to answer him. “Yes!” they shouted. After holding up both hooves to settle them down, the old stallion got up from his chair and announced that he needed something to drink before starting the story. “After all, what good is a storyteller if he is parched? Feel free to find a comfortable spot or pull up a bag near the fire. I won’t be gone for long,” he stated, winking and leaving the room.

Grabbing two pillows from a nearby closet, the two immediately started whispering to each other about what wonderful things they might hear. “Ava, are you excited?” asked the colt.

“I don’t know, Orin. You know how good a storyteller Grandpa is. I believe this will be something simply fantastic. Why else would Momma and Dad not tell us?” Looking around, she beckoned Orin to draw closer with a hoof and whispered into his ear, “Do you think… he will tell us how he got his scars?”

“I am sure he will. I don’t think anypony could get scars like that without a cool story,” replied Orin.

After finally finding comfortable positions, the two heard distinct voices slowly drawing near the living room. “--lutely sure they are old enough and ready? You were pretty close to their age, and I definitely remember you having nightmares for weeks afterward.”

“Come on, Dad, they are two years older than I was when you told me. And they are much more mature than you think. I believe they should know now. Their curiosity has gotten the better of them in the past. You remember that incident with the flower?” The two shared a chuckle. “Anyway, who better to tell one of the greatest stories than you? Honestly, I am surprised you have held off this long.” With that statement, a red-furred mare and the stallion entered the room.

“Very well, and you’re sure you don't want to stay for the story, Velvet?” offered the old unicorn.

“As enchanting as the story is, I believe I have heard it once too many times now. And I think if I stayed for this, I might spoil something,” replied Velvet. “And I know that this first time will be a special journey the two will remember forever, best not to ruin the moment.”

“Oh, but I bet you haven’t heard this version of the story. I’ll even add more to your favorite character,” goaded the stallion, raising his eyebrows suggestively.

“Quit it,” called Velvet playfully, nuzzling his chest and making him chuckle. “You know you're my favorite character. And you say that every time, and every time it is different. I don’t know how you do it, but you always seem to suck me in each time. But alas, if I stay here and listen too, who will make supper for all of us?” And with that, she simply nodded at the two and quietly left the room.

“Very well,” sighed the stallion, rubbing his muzzle before turning back to the foals, giving them a soft smile. “Are you two ready?” With vigorous nodding from the two, the old unicorn slowly returned to his spot near the fire. As he mulled over what to say, his gaze swept across the room. His eyes passed over the many tapestries and landscapes that decorated the walls, skipping over a bookshelf that housed a couple thick tomes and a “Best Grandpa” award on top. Eventually, he was fixated on the fire, watching as the embers danced in place. The whole time, the foals waited in anticipation of what he would say next.

“To begin, I must first establish a few things. Long ago, a certain unicorn by the name of Twilight Sparkle read in a book, called Predictions and Prophecies, that Nightmare Moon would return. This Nightmare Moon would exact her revenge on Equestria because she was banished by her sister, Princess Celestia, for a thousand years. Twilight told Celestia, her mentor, yet the princess ignored her and instead advised her to make friends in Ponyville,” he began.

“But Grandpa, we all know what happens, right? What--” asked Orin, but the ancient stallion continued.

“Let me finish. Paying no attention to her warning, Celestia was captured, and it was up to Twilight to defeat the new enemy. With her friends, they searched and found the Elements of Harmony. Except when they found the Elements, Nightmare Moon showed up and destroyed them right in front of Twilight’s eyes. That is where our story begins.”

“But doesn’t Twilight defeat Nightmare Moon?” wondered Ava.

“Ah well, that might be what we have told our next generation. The six were victorious, and peace was restored. And with the Elements, the mares were able to reform Nightmare Moon into Princess Luna. Then, the two royal sisters recognized the power they possessed as alicorns and chose to step down from authority. Vowing to never abuse their immortality, the two slipped into anonymity. That is what we had decided to teach. Except, in my time, Nightmare Moon actually won.”

Chapter [1] Subdued and overthrown

Crushed and defeated, Twilight and her new friends stared in shock at the now shattered Elements of Harmony before them. But… how? Nopony can destroy the Elements! Mouth agape, she shakily picked up a broken piece. Her brain scrambled to process what lay before her. In stunned silence, she held what she thought to be the key to victory. The book said we could defeat her! Yet before Twilight could move, Nightmare Moon spoke.

“I am victorious! Eternal night shall reign supreme in this land! All shall bow before my majesty and might.”

“Not if I can hel--” began Twilight, throwing away the piece and getting up. Nightmare Moon looked down and sneered at her.

“Silence!” the dark alicorn commanded. The six crouched and covered their ears, the thunderous noise deafening them and shaking the walls of the old castle, shattering the windows. Her horn sparkled with dark energy as iron cages enveloped Twilight and her friends. The mares were powerless against the twisted alicorn as they looked on in growing despair. Nightmare Moon paused for a moment, reveling in her victory and contemplating her following move. With a devilish thought and wicked grin, she sparked up her horn for another spell. A cloud formed and a bound Celestia emerged in front of the group.

These were the best defense you had against me? Six weaklings that were swiftly dealt with once confronted!” exclaimed Nightmare Moon, coming face to face with Celestia. The younger now stood tall and proud above the older. Their gazes met, and Celestia searched in her sister’s eyes for any spark of hope, but found only darkness. Nightmare Moon’s own eyes narrowed as she slowly circled Celestia. “And I see you placed so much misguided hope in your pupil. Yes, I know that the purple one is yours, dear sister. I am somewhat impressed, but I could have done better. In fact, I think I will. My time on the moon was not spent alone, so why spend my rule in solitude? I think one of you will make a fine companion."

Turning her focus to Twilight, the tainted mare of the moon lit her horn once again. This spell was unlike the numerous others cast in the recent moments. It was ancient and malevolent, searching for a living host. Twilight took a step back as she realized the target. As the magic enveloped her cage, a dark blue fog spilled from the ground, rising to cover the unicorn.

Anguish and misery filled the other five, as only muffled screams and cries seemed to penetrate the cloud that blanketed their friend. Their hearts dropped into their stomachs as the horror of the situation dawned on them.

With a thunderous crack, the cage crumbled. Stepping clear from it, the new Twilight stood proudly, facing towards Nightmare Moon. Gone was the indigo mane with purple and magenta streaks, all replaced with a darker blue color flowing from her neck. A single cobalt line trailed along where the original magenta had been. Instead of her purple coat, it seemed like darkness had crawled across her skin. Some of her original color remained in her tail, in a simple swirl of blended purple and little stars ingrained along the edges. Nightmare Moon smiled at her creation, nodding with approval as the new Twilight approached.

“Don’t you see, Celestia, I have won! Your rulership is coming to an end, the new Lunar dynasty begins! There will be none to oppose my power now!” continued Nightmare Moon, striding over to face Celestia again. “Now then, why don’t we make the new ruler known to our subjects? I believe we need a bigger audience.” With a few flicks of her horn, Nightmare Moon gathered all eight of them and teleported.

Touching down in the middle of Canterlot square, Nightmare Moon nodded her head with satisfaction at the spot. Closing her eyes and lighting her horn, a dark mist started flowing from her mane and growing around them. The ethereal substance began to ebb and flow towards the local inhabitants, pulling them from their homes and into the square. Stepping up to a silver platform, the dark alicorn lifted her head high as she watched ponies slowly draw near. Her grin grew at the craftiness of her spell.

Nightmare Moon stomped her hoof three times, silencing the crowd that had formed. “Behold! See your now previous ruler, Princess Celestia and her so called heroes, defeated and caged before you all! I, Nightmare Moon, have vanquished them. My sister is weak, unable to take care of our country and defend it. She sent six weaklings to overthrow me, yet they have been easily taken care of.” A few hushed whispers from the ponies followed as some shuffled in place.

“I believe our lands need a strong ruler, one who does not fall to such weakness. I shall take control and rule with an iron hoof, and all shall know of our kinds might among the nations!” More ponies whispered, ranging from agreeing to disagreeing. After declaring this, Nightmare Moon turned back towards her captives.

“I could easily dispose of you for attempting to defeat me, but I have decided to be merciful to some. I believe the mistakes of the past should be left to history. We must look to the future, and with the future comes change,” continued Nightmare Moon, walking around the group. “And one does not make changes without taking consideration of those around us. Yes, I believe I know what I want to do next.”

Breaking her train of thought, Nightmare Moon walked over to the new Twilight. “You. You shall be the first of my new empire. Therefore, your previous name shall become obsolete. Rise as Dawn Lighter, the one who lights the way of a new era of eternal night!” The dark alicorn grandiously swept her hoof across the sky, sending shooting stars across the heavens.

Turning back to the amassed crowd, Nightmare Moon looked around at their bewildered faces before addressing them again. “And for the rest. I believe it is time for our kind to stand strong in this new era. We must rid ourselves of those that have been deemed weak. My sister has proven that she is no longer fit to reign. And I have no use of her anymore.” After saying this, Nightmare Moon highlighted the still bound Celestia with her magic and leaped off the stage. Dragging the once proud monarch across the paved stone of the square like a ragdoll, the dark alicorn calmly walked through the crowd to another spot. With a simple twist of her horn, Nightmare Moon raised her sister into a seated position.

“Banishment would be too good for you. Take a good, long look, dear sister, because it will be your last,” whispered Nightmare Moon into Celestia’s ear, before stepping back and grinning.

“Let this moment be known among all of us, and let it cement that weakness shall not be tolerated. And that I shall hold back no judgement on those deemed guilty!” Lowering her horn, the alicorn of the night called upon another deep and dark enchantment. Tipping the scales of harmony and balance, she unleashed the spell upon Celestia. Every drop of magic was drained from the white alicorn. Celestia, Princess of the Day and protector of Equestria, now stood frail and withered, bowed in defeat before them all. Yet Nightmare Moon was not done yet. Striding forward, she took one final look into the eyes of her sister. A single shred of doubt flashed across Nightmare Moon’s features, yet it was gone just as fast. Finalizing the deed, she completed the last spell. The crowd slowly backed away in fear as stone swept across the features of the old monarch. Celestia, the pinnacle of justice and grace, was now a cold and still statue.

Once satisfied, and momentarily increasing the flow of her mane to steady the excess magic, Nightmare Moon looked back up at her audience. “And now, let this be a symbol to all that Celestia’s rule is over. Long live the new era of eternal night!

“With that finished, let it be known among all the land that the time has come to be renamed and to be blessed by the moon. Let every mare, stallion, and foal come to Canterlot Castle,” declared Nightmare Moon. Bowing her head slightly, she walked over to Dawn Lighter and teleported the two of them to the castle. Once gone, the enchantments that had been holding the other five fell away. Leaving them defeated and alone in this new world of darkness. Gone was Twilight, gone was Celestia, gone was hope.

Chapter [2] Chilling realizations and changed minds

View Online

The closest thing one could liken to what Twilight was experiencing was staring out a window. Twilight could see everything that her eyes could see, but had no control of them. Absently, she tried to move a leg forward, but it didn’t even budge. Soon panic began to take root as she realized she couldn’t even breathe. Her mind attempted to move, speak, scream, anything! Yet nothing happened. All she could do was feel something... another presence in her mind. A presence that now thought alongside her, that moved when she couldn’t, used her eyes to see, and breathed in a different rhythm than herself. And there was something else. It didn’t just control her, it used her. She could sense it reading her memories like a book. Analyzing her behavior and examining her thoughts and experiences. Awakening memories that had once been suppressed.

After a moment, she attempted to reach out and try to communicate with it. At first, it drew back, distancing itself from her. Suddenly, it charged forward and overwhelmed her with feelings of weakness and pain. Then it opened itself to her and spoke.

You are a strange pony,” it said. “My mistress has picked well. You were the brightest and the strongest among your group. Therefore you were the perfect candidate for the first possession.

“What… what are you?” responded Twilight in her mind.

I once was a humble spirit, until Queen Nightmare Moon offered me your body to possess. She called upon me from the moon, and so we share a connection. Though I am my own entity, I am also linked with Nightmare Moon because of her spell. And my Queen has named me Dawn Lighter,” the spirit replied happily.

“So, that is why I can’t move or even breathe of my own accord? Because you have control of my body?” reasoned Twilight.

That is correct. I am in charge now,” it stated. Yet Twilight refused to believe it. She searched her mind and body, hoping to find some sliver of freedom. Some overlooked part she could use to break from her new bond to this spirit.

Enough,” interjected the spirit. “Don’t you see? I am in complete control of your body and mind. You cannot hide your thoughts, your intentions from me. Your power is mine and at my command.” And to prove its point, it took a few confident steps, flexing a hoof and sparking her horn. “You are now simply a remnant, a spectator to the coming events. You should feel grateful for being the first of a new empire. Now hush, the Queen is about to speak.

Nightmare Moon stood in the throne room, gazing at the stained glass windows and monuments created by Celestia. “Adapting to the new body and grip of your host? Excellent,” she began, beckoning Dawn Lighter over to where she stood. “It’s pathetic, really, Celestia didn't even bother to put her victory over me in these murals. You are doomed to repeat your own past if you fail to learn from it.” She tsked, tracing a hoof along the glass. Moving her gaze from the windows to the other decorations that littered the halls, she shook her head in disgust at the pleasantries.

Nightmare Moon stopped and faced Dawn Lighter. “And it seems that in my absence, our subjects have increased. We must account for this new development. See what advances our kind has made, and how far we stretch across the land. Therefore, every pegasus, unicorn, and earth pony—no matter the age, must be enumerated. And each shall be given a new name, one blessed by the moon.”

“A wonderful idea, my Queen. How shall we go about this? And if ponykind has reached far and wide, how would we know? Is there a spell we could use to keep track of all the populace?” wondered Dawn Lighter.

“Mm, an incantation like that would require immense power and a constant watch. No, something simpler must be used. A token or tablet of some sort could be the key to identifying the ponies of the kingdom,” countered Nightmare Moon, tapping her chin in thought. “As for what my sister has done… that is all in the past now. We move on to a new era!” Taking a few steps back, Nightmare Moon lit her horn. Encasing the windows with her magic, she shattered each one outwardly, sending the remains into the night.

With a swish of her tail and quick pivot, the dark alicorn continued her canter down the hall, Dawn Lighter following closely. “How soon can we begin, my Queen?” she asked.

“As soon as possible. But I think we need another individual to keep account of all the names and numbers of ponies in my kingdom,” stated Nightmare Moon thoughtfully.

“Hmm, I think I already have one in mind. His name is Spike, and he already serves as this host’s assistant. Let me summon him here,” answered Dawn Lighter. Stopping, the unicorn scanned through her memories. Closing one eye in an attempt to focus, she utilized a simple breathing technique she recalled. The spell took form and placed a confused dragon in front of the two.

“Woah!” Spike jumped, immediately rubbing his claws together anxiously and looking around. “Twilight, wha-what happened to you? And what, uhm, is she doing here?” He gulped, glancing between the two.

Disregarding his words, Nightmare Moon drew closer to the dragon and examined him curiously. As she towered over him, Spike quickly began to backpedal until his back hit a wall. He put his claws up in defence. Somewhat satisfied, the dark alicorn lifted him up to eye level with her magic. “Listen closely, Spike, and listen well, as I do not like to repeat myself. All that you have known is about to change, and I cannot have one of my subjects lingering in the past. Celestia is dead, and I am your new ruler. And I am in need of an assistant,” she stated vehemently.

“B-but, I’m Twilight’s assistant,” Spike mumbled, straining against her magic and turning to Dawn Lighter. “Right?”

“He’s all yours, I have no need for an assistant,” Dawn Lighter said casually. Shocked and mouth agape, Spike bowed his head in shame. His greatest fear played out before him.

“Right, so we need you to keep a record of all the ponies. Their occupations and new names,” continued Nightmare Moon, plopping him back down to the floor.

“N-new n-names?” Spike sputtered, moving back onto his feet. “But, why?”

“Well, my scaly new assistant, I want to assess the kingdom my dearest sister has oh so kindfully given to me,” Nightmare Moon replied curtly. “I want to know how we have progressed. Our allies and enemies. I have been gone for over a thousand years, but I still know how to rule. Now, I do not want you to question all of my motives. Do as you are asked, as there is much to be done.”

One of the sayings that Fluttershy always enjoyed from her mother was, “No matter what happens, things will always turn out for the best.” And it was a saying that had consistently kept her with a positive outlook on life. So as she stepped nervously in the queue to be “renamed”, she chanted to herself that no matter what, she would stay true to herself and her friends. The world needed kindness right now, and it was up to her to do the best she could. Surprisingly, the time flew by as she waited. And when it came to her turn, she paused hesitantly. Was she truly okay with this? She knew that her name was special and that everypony else’s was too. Yet she kept her concerns to herself and stepped forward.

“Please state your name and occupation,” began Nightmare Moon, who was seated at a desk above her. Next to her and a bit lower, sat Spike. He was currently finishing writing a scroll, and she grew curious as he set down his quill and ignited the paper. Nightmare Moon tapped her desk with a hoof impatiently, gaining Fluttershy’s gaze back.

“Oh sorry,” Fluttershy squeaked, before taking a deep breath and answering. “Hel-hello, my name is Fluttershy, and I am an animal caretaker”

Taking a moment to let Spike move onto a fresh scroll, Nightmare Moon continued, “And why were you named Fluttershy?”

“W-well, my name came from when I was born. Whenever I was with other ponies, I was quite shy. And I couldn’t stop fluttering my wings whenever my mother or father held me. My parents thought it was the cutest thing and chose Fluttershy as my name,” explained Fluttershy, absently letting her mane overshadow her eye.

Thinking for a moment, Nightmare Moon responded, “I see. There is change coming, and ties to the past will be cast to the wind. Therefore, your new name shall be Flutter Moon, one blessed by the night.”

Nightmare Moon beckoned Fluttershy closer with a hoof. “I am going to put a spell on you, something that will do many things. One of these things is going to make you forget your and everypony else’s names. Furthermore, it will make your body more adaptable to my moon, replacing your need for sunlight with rejuvenation from the night,” stated Nightmare Moon.

The dark alicorn steadied herself, wrapping Fluttershy in her magic and tapping the pegasus with her horn. “Nunc lux lunae habes,” Nightmare Moon announced, completing the spell and placing Flutter Moon down.

“Woah,” she mumbled, taking a few tentative steps as she regained her balance. “My coat feels weird. Is that, um, normal for the spell?” Flutter Moon wondered, rubbing a hoof across her chest.

“It is. Simply step into my night, and you should feel even better than your previous self,” answered Nightmare Moon lightly, also taking a blank tablet and engraving “Flutter Moon” on it with her magic. “This is yours now. Keep it with you so that we may identify you in the future. Enjoy the night, Flutter Moon. You may leave now.”

Chapter [3] Loss of kin and a daring escape

“No! Give them back! Don’t do this to me!” screamed an earth pony as he was forcibly pushed back by Nightmare Moon’s magic.

“You must learn to put the past behind you,” growled Nightmare Moon, throwing the stallion out the door.

Massaging her temples with a hoof, she consoled herself, Patience. Soon all will be renewed by my moon, and their joy will be complete in it. Engulfing a pile of papers in her magic, she wished that her new scaly servant would return swiftly from his meal break. After his many pleas to eat something, she had to remind herself that not all were immortal like her. “Send in the next!”

“Where is she!” exclaimed a stallion as he barged in, horn aglow. Looking up from her desk, Nightmare Moon quickly assessed the stallion in armor. She raised an eyebrow at his muscled physique, nodding in approval.

“Please state your name and occupation,” replied the alicorn.

“To Tartarus with that, where is my sister, where is Twilight?” he continued, stomping his hoof in anger.

“Who? Do you think that I, the Queen, is in charge of looking for lost fillies that have run amuck?” spat Nightmare Moon. “I am progressing our kind into a future none could ever dream of.” She launched herself from her seated position, drawing herself to her fullest height. “And I am tired of my authority being questioned. So I will ask only one more time, else I will force your identity out of your mind myself. Your name and occupation.”

Cowed by her ferocity, the stallion gulped and spoke, “Ah. My name is Shining Armor, Captain of the Royal Guard. And I am looking for my sister, Twilight Sparkle.” Being so close, he could feel her magic and anger towards him right now. He bowed his head.

“Hmm, let me check the records for any ‘Twilight Sparkle’, if that settles you down,” offered Nightmare Moon, returning to her desk. Reaching into the royal archives with her magic, the dark alicorn retrieved a certain section. Shuffling around, she skimmed over the many pages before locating a single parcel. “Nope, I don’t see any ‘Twilight Sparkle’ here. There was a ‘Twilight Velvet’ if that is what you are searching for. But she is now Velvet Moon.”

“Twilight Velvet? No, that’s my mother. Are you sure that is the only record you have?” stated Shining Armor. Forgoing his earlier trepidation, he drew closer to her desk to inspect the paper. “Check again, she must be there!”

“I can, but I assure you that I have no record of your sister. Perhaps she has not been entered in yet?” remarked Nightmare Moon.

“No, I couldn't find her in the queue. Please, if she does come up, tell her that I am looking for her,” he begged before returning to his spot in defeat.

“Now then, for the spell.” With a satisfied grin, Nightmare Moon closed her eyes and lit her horn. The thrill of placing the magic on ponies never lost its joy on her as she enveloped the white stallion. “Nunc lux lunae habes.” After speaking the words, she allowed him to regain his composure.

"What was the name I was looking for again?! T…” he exclaimed in alarm. He racked his brain for the word, aghast to find his mind coming up empty. “And what did you say mine was? ‘S’ something, or did it start with an ‘A…’ How will she recognize me if I can’t even…”

“Calm yourself. Your new name is Shining Moon. I shall send your sister to find you as soon as she comes to me,” answered Nightmare Moon, pulling him closer with her magic before giving him a freshly engraved tablet. “Now then, take this, it serves as your identification. You may leave. Good night.”

In a corner of the great Canterlot Castle, four hooves came to a skidding halt as their owner leaned against a wall. Catching her breath, the mare steadied herself as her mind continued its marathon pace. Fools. Thinking that Nightmare Moon will pander to your every need. Shaking her head, she gauged her surroundings. She cursed at how exposed her current position was. I must act swiftly if I am to escape this castle alive. Shuffling in place, she took stock of her options. The mare didn’t know if Nightmare Moon was already aware of her disappearance. She hoped that she had enough of a head start before the meeting ended.

“Riches and fame shall be yours. All you must do is swear allegiance to me.” It had been such a simple request. Yet none had dared refuse the newly crowned alicorn. While the nobles had begun squabbling among themselves on wrongs they had been given under Celestia’s rule, the mare had slinked out of the room unnoticed, picking up on the underlying threat that was there. ‘Defy me and be removed from your title and probably your life.’ Now, she racked her brain in finding the best way to escape.

All throughout the event, she kept on asking herself, “What would Celestia do?” Still considering her options, one of her ears picked up a sound. Hooves on the padded floor coming closer to her. She thought it was a coming assassin, and her heart began racing again. She looked around for a possible hiding spot, locating a nearby door and throwing herself into it.

Risking a peek, she noticed a familiar face who was desperately running through the halls in search of… something. He was mumbling to himself, too inaudible for her to hear from her hiding spot. Knowing that at least one pony had not sided with Nightmare Moon, she trusted her gut with this one and stepped out.

“Hey!” she whispered, drawing his attention. Recognition immediately fell upon the white unicorn’s features, and the mare ushered him into the room.

“Oh, thank Celestia, it’s you, Princess. Have you seen my sister, T--I mean… Argh, I can’t remember her name!” mumbled the stallion.

“No, I haven't seen her. Keep your voice down. There are ears everywhere,” she hushed.

“Huh? What is going on, why all the secrecy?” he wondered, taking in her agitated state.

“Don’t you know? Nightmare Moon is tying up all loose ends. She’s forced pretty much all the nobles to swear allegiance to her now. The Queen has declared that Celestia is dead, but I don’t believe her. Yet Nightmare Moon is acting like she’s won. If we don’t take action now, our lives will be at risk. You haven't sworn yet, have you?” she muttered.

“No. Oh, sweet Celestia, what do we do? I can’t find my sister, and everything is crashing down around us.” Blushing lightly, the white unicorn turned to her. “I am sorry, with Nightmare Moon’s name wipe, I don’t have your name. She has renamed me as Shining Moon.”

“Moon Melody for me. It seems that creativity isn’t her strong suit when it comes to names. But whatever. Right now we need to gather as much information as we can,” began Moon Melody. “I still have a few servants that are loyal to me. I will try and get in contact with them and figure out what happened to Celestia. If Nightmare Moon’s claims are true, then…” Shaking her head, she dismissed the thought. “You see if you can find your sister. Maybe the three of us can overpower the new queen and restore what's been lost. Meet me in two hours in the royal gardens. Wait, scratch that. Two is too much, one is all we can spare. Be safe.”

And with that, she departed the room, slinking through the halls. Redoubling his efforts, Shining Moon set off to find his sister.

“There you are!” exclaimed Shining Moon as he finally found his target. Even though she looked quite different from what he remembered, Shining Moon was confident that he would always be able to identify his sister. “I couldn't find you before or after the renaming process. Are you okay? What happened to you? Why do you look so different?”

“Ah, you must be this host’s brother. Queen Nightmare Moon has informed me that we no longer require your services as Captain of the Royal Guard, or any guard for that matter. The Queen is perfectly capable of guarding herself,” explained the dark unicorn.

“You still haven't answered my question, what happened to you? What happened to your mane and tail?” he said, gesturing to her. “Your sister is dead and gone. I now possess her body and her powers. And I am Dawn Lighter, the Queen’s faithful servant. Now, begone from my presence, I do not want you pestering me all day. I have a kingdom to help run.” Brushing past him, Dawn Lighter flicked her tail in annoyance before continuing on her way.

Each word was like a bludgeon to his face. Shining Moon had to sit down hard to process what she said. D-dead? No, she can’t be gone. Not my sister. Not T... Yet his brain still struggled to remember. Taking a moment to breathe, Shining Moon contemplated going to confront this Dawn Lighter again, but Moon Melody’s warning of potential danger still lingered in his mind. She’s still in there. I know she is. I will come back for you. Turning back, Shining Moon raced for the gardens.

Stepping out into the night air, Shining Moon breathed in the familiar taste of foliage and dirt. Following his nose, he made his way to the entrance of the royal gardens. Attributed as one of the Six Wonders of Equestria, and probably the most well-known, the vast gardens stood before him. Even under the light of the moon, the beauty of the gardens was almost like a beacon in the night. Illuminated by the soft glow of fireflies and luminescent flora, the path was clear to see.

Every time he entered, he was immediately struck with the smell of earth and the marvels it yielded. He had a strong urge to stop and nibble at the plants and grass that covered the ground. Shaking himself out of his momentary hunger, he cautiously crept along one pathway. Keeping his ears up at attention, he made sure to balance his breathing and steps in tandem. An old military trick he had been taught to always stay vigilant, wherever you may be.

Taking a half step to break his canter, he scarcely picked up on a second pair of hooves that had been mimicking his own. They had attempted to match his own gait, but had failed to do so when he had changed his pace.

His breath increased as he realized two things. The first was that he was indeed being followed. And the second was that whoever was tracking him wasn’t very good. A trained assassin would have been too careful to simply match his own walk, instead opting to make as little sound as possible and to attack at just the right moment. No, his pursuer was a novice, but even a novice could be dangerous.

His horn glowed as a soft crack from his left alerted him to an attacker. Yet before he was able to react, a body slammed into him and he tumbled to the ground. Sprawling on the grass, Shining Moon was the first on his hooves and readied his horn again before peering at his enemy. His magic slowly fizzled away as he took in the form of another white unicorn stallion getting to his own hooves. The other stallion shook his golden mane, righting himself before turning to Shining Moon. “Prince?” Shining Moon asked hesitantly.

“Oh, it's you. Needed to make sure. Not a prince anymore, Aunty Nightmare Moon made sure of that. Moon Melody said she was expecting you. Follow me, you're not the first I’ve had to deal with,” replied the familiar golden-haired stallion, beckoning Shining Moon as the two went deeper into the garden.

“What are you doing here? Were you renamed too? How do you know of our plans?” asked Shining Moon lightly as they trekked, hoping to fill the silence.

“Keep your voice down, and yes,” whispered the white unicorn. “After being titled something silly like ‘Blue Moon’ and having no interest in supporting the dastardly Nightmare Moon, I was able to refuse her invitation of allegiance and make my way here to think upon my next move. Fate seemed to smile upon me when Moon Melody came rushing here as well. She has filled me in on the rest.”

“Blue Moon, eh? I don’t doubt the Queen’s creativity, but that’s just laziness,” muttered Shining, raising an eyebrow.

“I definitely agree. What disappointing title did she give you?” grumbled Blue Moon.

“Shining Moon. And I think it’s fine. At least--” began Shining Moon.

“We are here. Hello, Moon Melody,” Blue Moon cut in as he directed the two of them down a turn.

“Shining!” exclaimed Moon Melody softly, letting out a sigh of relief. She moved from her hidden position to stand next to him and wrapped him in a hug. Withdrawing from him, the pink alicorn gave him a gentle smile. “I am glad you are safe.” Though the smile was only momentary as she hung her head, grief pressing into her features. “Sadly I have learned some depressing news about Celestia. And I fear we won’t have long before the Queen discovers we are no longer within the castle. Blue Moon, how is the perimeter?”

“The area is secure, somewhat. I scared off some earth pony who wanted to steal some poison joke, but that was the only pony I interacted with,” stated Blue Moon, absently leaning against a tree and checking his hoof. “Nothing I couldn't handle.”

“Thank you, Blue Moon. Now then, we shouldn’t delay any longer,” started Moon Melody, beckoning them to gather around her. “Where should--” Yet before she could finish, Blue Moon’s ears flicked and that was all the warning they got before the sound of a crossbow bolt pierced the ambience of the night. Instantly, Shining Moon raised his signature shield and was horrified to watch as the deadly shaft passed cleanly through. It impaled itself into Moon Melody’s shoulder. The alicorn, caught by surprise, toppled to the ground.

“Moon Melody!” cried Shining Moon, losing all focus of his surroundings as he cradled the pink alicorn in his hooves. “No no no!” he mumbled, dragging her towards a tree and running his hooves over her coat to locate the wound and try to slow the bleeding. His eyes grew misty as he looked up to watch Blue Moon send a magical shot into the woods.

“Get us out of here, Moon Melody!” shouted Blue Moon, readying his horn and scanning the garden for any visible threat. Shining Moon could feel Moon Melody shudder in his hooves. She took in ragged breaths and wheezed as she closed her eyes in concentration. Moving to a seated position, she laid her head against the tree’s bark. She hesitantly opened her eyes, before widening them as she spotted a second arrow coming her way. Frantically grabbing all three with a magical net, she was able to teleport them into the night with a mental heave.

A hooded figure emerged from its hiding spot. It inspected the ground that was now matted with blood. Grunting, the pony he noted that the quarrel had missed. “Hmm, the Queen will not be happy.”

Being the bearer of bad news was never good, especially when it came to something that Silver Moon didn’t even understand. As a castle maid, Silver has diligently worked for Celestia for almost all of her life. In her humble status quo, she had been tasked to keep the castle in peak condition. Along with maids and butlers, she had been busying herself with preparation for the Summer Sun Celebration. But when that went to chaos, everything else seemed to follow. Thankfully she had been able to retain her position under Queen Nightmare Moon. She had been polishing a vase when a figure had snuck up behind her.

“I want you to give a message to the queen, ‘The three have escaped.’ Can you do that for me?” it had hissed in her ear, causing her to jump quite considerably. When she had turned around to face the intruder, he was nowhere to be seen. She gulped, losing control of her brush. As she bent down to pick it up, she contemplated whether or not to listen to the words. Maybe she had just imagined the voice. “Quickly now, no time for delay,” it hissed again, echoing all around her. Thoroughly spooked, the mare shakily looked around again before sprinting off in search of the queen.

Following the direction another maid had graciously provided her with, Silver Moon nosed open a door to find the pacing alicorn inside. Gulping again, the maid wondered what happened to those that had previously delivered bad news. Hesitation played across her mind again, and she was about to turn around and return to her station. Yet before she could, a wing slapped her flank and sent her forward into the room.

“Yes, what is it, maid? I had asked to not be disturbed,” stated Nightmare Moon, staring at her intently.

“Oh! Please forgive me, Your Majesty,” squeaked Silver Moon, bowing immediately. “B-but I had received a m-message from somepony. He said to t-tell you that ‘the three have escaped.’” The Queen seemed to ponder the statement for a moment before tossing her mane indifferently.

“Very well, thank you. You are dismissed,” the alicorn said, returning to her thoughts and leaving the other mare to quickly shuffle out the door. Nightmare Moon was impressed. So they have managed to evade one of my assassins. Perhaps Moon Melody was not as weak as I had first thought. “Canopus, you may step out now,” she called, turning to the figure that quickly revealed itself from the shadows. To the untrained eye, he seemed to have simply appeared from thin air.

“Yes, my Queen?” he declared, bowing.

“Next time, tell me yourself of your failures instead of sending a hapless mare in your wake. I do not treat failure as a death sentence, and I would like that you make that known amongst yourselves. However, I have two tasks for you,” began Nightmare Moon, stepping closer to him. “First, notify Valgro that a new hunt has begun. That should sate his desire for a good chase. I want him after the trio and to eliminate any threat they should pose. Second, I want you to locate Dawn Lighter and--”

“My Queen!” exclaimed Dawn Lighter, bursting through the doorway. Two sets of eyes immediately trained on her. She breathed deeply for a moment before relaxing her features. “I must speak with you urgently and privately.”

“Very well. Canopus, please complete the first task that I had given you. And don’t fail me again,” dismissed the dark alicorn, turning towards Dawn Lighter and pointing a hoof. “And what, pray tell, has got you so excited? And what do you have there?”

“I believe I have found something that could either spell our downfall, or secure our reign forever.”

All was calm in the Everfree Forest, if calm was a suitable word for such a vicious area. Eyes of various colors and sizes kept watch over their respective domains. Any creature that crossed those boundaries was either eaten or brutally torn apart. There was a balance of both peace and chaos around the region, as few of the stronger animals dared challenge each other. However, on this particular day, that balance was broken. A surprisingly bright light illuminated a patch of grass, displacing three bodies on the ground.

Shining Moon was the first on his hooves, checking around the area for any potential enemy. Satisfied that there was no immediate danger, he returned to find Blue Moon shaking his mane free of loose dirt and checking to make sure his hooves had stayed in peak condition. Rolling his eyes at the former prince's antics, Shining Moon drew closer to the heaving form of Moon Melody. He ignited his horn and ran a much more extensive scan, slowing the flow of her blood and checking for any other internal bleeding.

“Whoa, what a doozy. You sure got us out of there lickety split, Moon Melody,” stated Blue Moon, inspecting his surroundings. “Where do you think we are?”

“I don’t know yet, but keep quiet and help me pull out this bolt. Once it's out, I can heal her better without any more tissue damage,” remarked Shining Moon as he braced his hoof against the prone body of the pink alicorn. “Now, when I say pull, I want you to take it out. I will keep her insides from resisting and make sure nothing breaks off. Got it?”

“I-I don’t think I am really qualified for that kind of--” began Blue Moon, his eyes growing wider at the blood that now coated Shining Moon’s hooves.

“Trust me, I am doing all the hard stuff. Just pull. It’s easy, okay?” Shining Moon said again.

“I-I, what if I mess up or pull too fast or too slow or in the wrong direction or--” mumbled Blue Moon as he shook his head and leaned away.

“No, you will do fine. Just do it nice and smoothly, okay?” assured Shining Moon as he beckoned the other stallion to sit. “Alright. One, two, three!” And with a sickening squelch and a moan from Moon Melody, the arrow was pulled free. Quickly dressing the wound in magic, Shining Moon began to knit some of the flesh together so that she wouldn’t bleed out.

“I was never good at this, and Moon Melody is going to tan my hide as soon as she finds out how messed up her coat is now. But no matter. She’s alive now and resting. That’s all that matters.” Shining Moon sighed, placing her sleeping form to the ground before standing up. “Our next priority is to find civilization and see if--”

“Is that a good idea?” cut in Blue Moon, tapping his chin in thought. “I mean, if we appear in some town, we’ll attract attention? We would definitely be killed in our sleep. Maybe somewhere more quaint?”

“I… well, hmm,” began Shining Moon, trying to rack his brain for a stable defense, but coming up empty. “You know, you are right. For a snobbish noble I had presumed you too be, you can have some pretty decent ideas once in a while.”

“Not all nobles are power- and money-hungry jerks that only want to please themselves. And I do have my moments.” Blue Moon winked, giving Shining Moon a signature smile before taking another look around. “How deep do you think we are in this forest?”

“Good question, let's find out,” announced Shining Moon dryly, beginning to scale a nearby tree. Shimmying to the top, he was met with multiple leaves to the face. Pushing past more of the foliage, he was finally able to stand somewhat balanced above the treeline. Peering around, he noted the distinct outline of smoke in the distance, as well as an opening between the trees that probably signified a river. Dropping back down to the ground, he dusted himself off.

“See anything useful?” wondered Blue Moon.

“Nope, we are completely and truly lost in an endless sea of trees. We must now fight for survival in this new and infinite wilderness of wood and grass,” deadpanned Shining Moon. Blue Moon simply raised an eyebrow.

“I didn’t know that the royal guard had a sense of humor. I thought you all had to remain calm and stoic, unfazed by the potential danger around you,” quipped Blue Moon. “Maybe we both judged each other too quickly. Since it seems like we are about to spend a whole lot of time together, shall we start over?” He offered a hoof. Shining Moon bumped it with his own.

“Now then, what are we going to do with Moon Melody? Do you think she can walk?” Blue Moon turned his gaze to the mare.

“Well, she should…” began Shining Moon, before swiftly moving to her side and inspecting her muzzle. He swore loudly. “This is not good.”

“What, what is it?” wondered Blue Moon as he took note of the green and blue trails of… something running down Moon Melody’s mouth. Shining Moon simply shook his head in anger.

“She's been poisoned.”

Seven days. That had been the allotted time Nightmare Moon had given her greatest assassin. And Valgro was up for the hunt. He lived for the chase, to pursue a target and claim his victory as the greatest tracker and killer. All that he had to do to impress his Queen was to bring back a trophy, whether that be a horn, wing, or something else of his liking. Valgro didn’t care too much for trophies though. Useless artifacts that collected dust. They did little in strengthening him against newer and more challenging adversaries.

Regardless, he was on the move again. This moment, the stalking of his prey, was what he lived for. He already wasted one day tracking down a unicorn who then helped pinpoint the magical residue that matched Moon Melody’s. After being given a rough estimate area, he had simply jumped into the air, deciding to fly his way to this ‘Everfree Forest’ and begin his chase. Another day had been spent traversing the countryside towards his destination. A forest was one of his favorite regions to track in, with a lush environment and easy spots to hide. Plus the constant noise of critters would help mask his pursuit.

He had been notified that one of the trio had been hit with a poisonous dart. It’d most likely slow his prey and give him plenty of time to find the best killing spot. Few knew of the poisonous Targelas plant, and fewer knew of its origin from the San Palomino Desert and its antidote. Thus, Valgro was confident that at least one of his targets would go down without a problem, though he wished she would have been slain at his hooves. Regardless, the other two stallions would most likely hold a burial for the pink alicorn, further slowing their progress and increasing his chances of killing them.

Sweeping through the forest on the third day, Valgro wiped a bead of sweat that had formed on his forehead. He had picked up their tracks an hour ago and was surprised to find only two sets of hooves. Had the pink one already died off, and they had simply buried her and moved on? It was a conclusion he made, until he noted a feather caught between a brush four hours later. Sniffing it hesitantly, he figured that they were carrying their fallen friend through the trees. He smiled as he now knew that it would slow their company even more, he doubled his pace.

Three hours later, he huffed as he realised that his prey too had increased their speed. At this rate he wouldn’t be able to reach them until the end of this day, and he hated delays. Surprisingly though, he came across fresh tracks that gave him pause. A third party had met with the trio, and it seemed that this pony was much better at masking its trail. Scratching his head at who this new mysterious pony was or what they were doing in the forest. Had a hiker or explorer come across his prey by chance, deciding to assist them? Or had they coordinated with somepony ahead of time to meet up with once they had reached a particular spot? If so, he would have to prepare himself in case his target had placed a trap ahead.

More confusion fell upon him as he bent down to inspect more tracks which showed the trio deviate from their original direction. Unsheathing a knife, Valgro prepared himself for what lay ahead. Something didn’t sit right in his mind, and the cold feeling of steel against his flesh calmed his nerves. Another fresh pair of tracks signified that they were not far off. He was close, he could feel it. Now he needed to find the best spot to kill them.

Obviously the ponies suspected nothing, it seemed they didn’t even bother to mask their journey. It was like they almost wanted to be found, but Valgro knew they weren’t smart enough for that. Though his confidence was beginning to break as he found himself walking along a path. And if there was a path, there definitely would be civilization. He was quite surprised, thinking no sane creature would live in such a bleak and eerie forest, but to each their own. Yet this made his job even harder. If there was a town ahead, he wouldn’t be able to blend in with the small populace.

He decided to deviate from the path, it would be too easy for his prey to simply turn around and discover him. He stayed well back from the clear walkway, but never truly lost sight of it either. Eventually, he came to a bigger clearing, where he noticed a quaint home built into a tree. Various vines hung from the branches, supporting vases and jugs of different sizes. Moving closer to hear, he picked up three distinct voices talking. He raised an eyebrow as he listened to one individual that seemed to rhyme with each sentence. Certainly an interesting way to converse. He shrugged before choosing to draw farther away.

He scoped out the surrounding area and noted quite a few particular spots that caught his eyes. The small hut had numerous patches nearby devoted for different uses. One section it seemed was dedicated to growing a small garden, which yielded quite a variety of vegetables. Another place he focused on was another building. Cocking his head, he attempted to figure out its purpose before shrugging and labeling it a greenhouse or something else. Nothing that seemed to be of use to him, and he wasn't here to congratulate a pony on surviving in a forest.

Moving on, he began to draw a mental map, taking note of different tree patterns and looking for a potential spot to strike the small party. Confident that he had the upper hoof, he wanted to make sure he picked the best place to hide and wait. Positive that he had stayed hidden behind them, Valgro smiled at another job well done. And though he had successfully stayed concealed against his targets, the forest had not missed him. And its inhabitants had been quick to announce his presence to their caretaker, a certain exotic zebra.

“Is he gone? Why don’t we chase him off now?” wondered Blue Moon as he peered out a window. The two stallions had been seated on two cushions, facing their host who was busy concocting a potion.

“Patience, my friend, finish the drink I gave to calm your nerves. In due time my brew will be complete, and then we will soon deal with what that pony deserves,” hummed the zebra as she continued to mix and add different powders and ingredients.

“Can you save her, Arocez? I won’t be able to forgive myself if I brought her all this way and she died. I knew I should have double-checked the perimeter before we left,” mumbled Shining Moon, continuing to sip his tea.

“I assure you the cure can be found. But the antidote is not something we simply find on the ground. Yet we must deal with our outside enemy first,” replied Arocez, stepping away from her pot. “You two must defeat him, then Moon Melody can be properly nursed.”

“Us? How are we supposed to defeat a trained assassin?” exclaimed Blue Moon, aghast. “I am a noble, not a killer.”

“But I think when it comes down to it, we might have to kill him anyway. What if he escapes? He will come back and bring reinforcements. If he succeeds, then we will all be dead,” muttered Shining Moon, shaking his head.

“You can’t be serious!” continued Blue Moon, stomping a hoof in agitation.

“Deadly.” Shining Moon sighed, bringing his hoof up to rub his forehead. “I mean, what choice do we have? It’s either us or him. When I was captain of the guard, I had to make these hard decisions. Now we have little to no choice.”

“I do not support the ending of any creature's existence, and I hope you may find an alternative way. But I fear we have little time, as Moon Melody will not survive another day,” stated Arocez, downcast.

“Very well, goodbye, Arocez. Thank you for your hospitality. Keep her safe for me, if I do not return,” declared Shining Moon, drinking the last of his tea and exiting the house. Blue Moon followed close behind a little more hesitantly.

The two stallions walked quietly through the forest. One was contemplating if he could really do it, be personally involved in ending another pony’s life. The other strode in determination, willing to do anything for Moon Melody. Previously the two had decided to take on their pursuer on open ground. They had been notified that the nearest clearing was southwest, towards the Ghastly Gorge.

“Arocez said that a potential cure could be found near one of the hills towards the Ghastly Gorge,” stated Shining Moon sincerely, hoping that he was loud enough to alert the assassin that they were on the move.

After two hours of trudging in that direction, they came clear of the treeline and viewed the hills before them. Shining Moon was surprised to find Blue Moon pointing him towards a direction. “If I remember my geography right, there should be train tracks this way. We can make our stand there, and he won’t be able to take us by surprise,” he stated.

“Good idea,” confirmed Shining Moon. The two diverged in that direction. The rusted rails came into view as the stallions reached the crest of another hill. Long ago, there was a giant bridge spanning the gorge so that the railway could pass smoothly around the edge of the Everfree and into Appleloosa and Dodge city. The bridge still stayed well-maintained, with only the cracked paint hinting at its age.

Stopping about an eighth of the way across, the two sat and mentally prepared for their enemy. They didn’t have to wait long, as a prone figure stepped over the same hill, coming into view. “So! You have decided to fight me on your own terms, ey? No matter! The Queen will be happy to know I finished you off quickly and efficiently this night. One week was too generous of her to give me to find you!” called their adversary as he calmly walked towards the two.

“You sure speak a lot for somepony hidden behind a hood!” retorted Shining Moon, digging a hoof into the wood below him and moving into a battle stance. The hooded figure simply shrugged and charged. Both Shining and Blue Moon ignited their horns, prepared to fight with only magic by their side. Yet the assassin was more prepared than them, with many razor sharp knives at his disposal. Valgro had decided to take out the weaker of the two, sending two blades through the air to impale Blue Moon’s chest. The stallion had been able to flick away the first, but the second had landed home. Dropping to his knees, he yanked out the knife and covered the wound with a hoof before toppling to the floor.

“I am impressed, being able to throw knives like that requires much honed skill. But are you able to fight off a unicorn that has had years to deal with your kind?” announced Shining Moon as the two began to circle each other. Valgro was the first to strike, sending another three blades into the air. Shining Moon flicked the first two, before dodging the third and charging the pony. His hooded opponent simply jumped into the sky, sending another two blades down. Yet Shining was ready, twisting out of the way and sending one of the knives back to its thrower.

Surprised by his enginuity, Valgro dove to the ground before launching a few more knives into the air. “How many of those do you have!” exclaimed Shining Moon, wiping away blood from a gash across his muzzle.

“As many as it takes to bring you down!” yelled Valgro, sending six more. Shining Moon wasn’t able to dodge them all. One sunk into his shoulder, another sliced across his front leg. If he didn’t finish this fight soon, he wouldn’t be able to walk away even if he did win. Briefly glancing over the edge, an idea began to form in his head as he raised two knives into a defensive position.

After a few more bouts, the two momentarily paused and both nursed their wounds. “How… about...” huffed Shining Moon as he gritted his teeth, placing a third healing spell upon himself, “...we just fight like real stallions, no weapons, no magic, just you and me with our hooves?” He hoped his adversary would take the bait, or else they both would die that day.

After a pregnant minute, Shining Moon feared his opponent would refuse and send another knife. “Very well,” the hooded figure said, raising his head and shrugging off his robes. “Few have seen my body and lived. And I hope to keep it that way. You have proved to be a formidable foe.” The pony was unlike anything that Shining Moon had seen before. A dark pony stood before him. At first Shining had mistaken him for a standard pegasus. However, instead of feathery appendages, thin, leathery wings protruded from his back. He glared at Shining with strange slitted pupils and bared his dark fangs. Numerous scars plagued his torso and chest, previous victories embellished onto his frame.

The two circled each other again, albeit much slower and both limping. This time though, Shining Moon chose to spring forward first, hoping to pin down his target. The darker pony slipped from his grasp and attempted a swift right hook to the jaw. Rubbing the pain away, Shining Moon switched tactics, sweeping the other pony’s hooves from under him and sending him sprawling. He followed up with a tackle from above, the two wrestled around on the ground.

Slowly pushing towards the edge, Shining Moon noticed a fallen knife to his right. Pushing with all his willpower, he brought the knife over with his magic and plunged it into his opponents wing, making a deep gash across its base. “Cheater!” cried Valgro, but it was too late. He was launched over the edge of the bridge.

Letting go of the blade, Shining Moon collapsed to the floor, breathing heavily as he tried to cover up his wounds. He had done it, he had won. But could he keep going in this state? His mind began to fade. He chuckled to himself. Was this his end? Dying forgotten in the middle of nowhere?

Yet as he began to close his eyes, one image pushed itself to the front of his mind. It was Moon Melody, smiling at his silly antics as he had brought her flowers on a whim. The other guards had pressured him into trying something as they too wanted to try to score the princess of love. Slowly that imagine burned within his mind, awaking a second wind in him as he shrugged off the cold tendrils of death. No, he would not die today, not like this, not this far away from his love. Getting up, he stumped a couple times before moving over to the fallen prince, nudging him with a hoof. The other unicorn groaned in pain before opening his eyes to look at Shining Moon. “Yeesh, you look terrible,” he mumbled, raising an eyebrow.

“Get up, I need you to help support me back to Arocez’s hut,” muttered Shining Moon, kicking the prone form.

“Did you get him?” Blue Moon asked as he moaned in pain, slowly getting up and looking around.

“No thanks to you though. But yeah, sent him over the edge and cut his wing. Nothing survives that fall,” declared Shining Moon, peering over the side. The two supported each other and began to limp back to the forest.

“Do you think Arocez has something that would keep my mane in pristine condition?” pondered Blue Moon after a moment. The other stallion just shook his head in amusement.

Down below, a broken, mangled, but very much alive pony began to slide its body across the floor of the gorge, cursing revenge on the pony that had ended his hunt.

Chapter [5] Finding answers and potential allies

View Online

All was calm in Ponyville. The moon sat unmoving high in the sky, overlooking the citizens of the small town. Try as they might, the ponies could not grow to enjoy the moon. The sun would forever be their first love. Its warmth sweeping through the countryside each morning, rays of light dancing all around, illuminating the sky in a soft baby blue. Though the moon did its best to give light, it still felt in-adequete compared to the greater celestial body.

A hooded figure crept silently through the town. Tasked to stay hidden and track down five individuals, the pony pressed himself against a building as a couple walked by. Using the brief moment to check the list he had been given, he looked up to pinpoint his first destination. Carousel Boutique. Nodding his head in confirmation, the figure looked both ways before slipping into the building.

As any good manager of a business would do whenever hearing the familiar ding of a customer entering her store, the pearl white mare was just about to greet her newest patron when she paused. In these uncertain times, suspicion fell upon strangers in their town. And this cloaked figure raised numerous red flags with his enigmatic appearance. Why was he here?

Levitating a nearby set of scissors, the mare mustered all her strength and approached the pony. “Hell-o… welcome to Carousel Boutique,” she said hesitantly, drawing his attention away from the merchandise he had been viewing. She gasped when he turned to her, seeming to have devilish eyes hidden behind the hood. Yet all her suspicion came crumbling down when the figure threw back the hood to reveal a surprisingly handsome face.

“Hello, my name is Shining Moon. Am I right to presume you to be Miss Moon Sparkle?” he asked, bowing courteously. Taken aback by his sudden appearance, Moon Sparkle sputtered and dropped the shears.

“Sorry, yes, that is me. What can I do for you?” she responded after collecting herself. Looking at his clothes further, she noted the many rips and tears. “My word, darling, what happened to your cloak? Perhaps you are here for a fix?”

“This? Oh, I guess it could use some patchwork,” said Shining Moon, looking down at himself. “Let’s just say the previous owner had too strong of a fascination with knives. However, I am not here for business, just for information and a proposition.”

“Oh! Come, come in then.” She beckoned, turning around and swishing her tail as she walked over to two chairs. Sitting down, she gestured for him to take a seat. “What sort of information are you looking for?”

“Well, I wanted to know what happened during the night with Nightmare Moon,” he began. Moon Sparkle frowned and looked away.

“Oh. I-I don’t really want to talk about that,” she mumbled, twirling her mane with a hoof. “I am sure there are other ponies that have a much better account than I do.”

“That may be true, but there is another individual that I want to know about. Dawn Lighter. She was there too, right?” Shining Moon pressed, trying his best to keep his voice steady and not crack at the name.

“Yes, she was there too, but she was different. She was a nice mare, though her mane was practically dreadful when I first met her. I simply could not stand by and did my best to freshen her up,” commented Moon Sparkle, moving into the territory she was much more enthusiastic about. “I believe Celestia had sent her to check on the preparations for the town, and I was in charge of decorating the place.”

Nodding his head, Shining looked around, impressed by her work. “Thank you then. As for the proposition, I guess I am in need of your services. But I am afraid here is not the best place to discuss such matters. You never know who’s listening, and Flutter Moon’s cottage is more secluded. ”

“How do you know Flutter Moon? And why does any knowledge of those events require secrecy?” wondered Moon Sparkle, getting up. He sighed deeply.

“Dawn Lighter is my sister, and I am going to do everything I can to bring her back to the way I know her to be. A good and kind-hearted mare rather than the cold and careless pony Nightmare Moon turned her into. Meet me and the others at Flutter Moon’s cottage in two hours. Tell nopony.” And with that, he bid her farewell and left.

Taking in his words, Moon Sparkle began to tidy her shop. Grabbing a few knick knacks and throwing them into a saddlebag, the mare checked to make sure she hadn’t left anything unattended. Flipping the ‘open’ sign to ‘closed’, she was just about to leave before remembering something. “Sweetie dear, I am heading to Flutter Moon’s place for a few hours. Keep watch over the shop and tell anypony that I am away on other business!” she called above, before stepping outside and braving the night.

“Thank you so much for your hospitality and for saving Moon Melody, Arocez. I guess I never asked, but how did you get your name?” wondered Shining Moon as the trio made their way out of the forest. Their pace slow as they still needed to support a very weak Moon Melody.

“At the beginning of the Summer Sun Celebration, I had intended to reveal my presence to the town. But that changed when things went amiss, and a new queen picked up the fallen crown,” explained Arocez after a moment of thought. “My hope dashed, I made my way to be renamed. Now one day I plan to try again, but until then, I live in this forest untamed.” As the group reached the edge of the treeline, Arocez pointed in a direction. “This is where I must leave you, over there you will find a mare of abounding kindness. She can help nurse your pains, and perhaps you three will be able to put your past behind us.”

“Sadly we still have many trials ahead of ourselves. We barely survived the first assassin, and I am sure there are more to come. Stay safe, Arocez, for we may need your help again in the future,” replied Shining Moon before they departed. Following the direction they had been given, they reached a quaint little cottage. Critters and creatures of all shapes and sizes chattered around the house.

“Oh, um, hello!” called a soft voice, and a yellow pegasus stepped out from her home to address the three before noticing the labored walk of Moon Melody. “Oh my gosh, are you alright?” She ran up to them and with surprising strength lifted the pink alicorn into the air. She made her way inside and gently set the other mare on a couch.

“Thank you,” remarked Shining Moon, sighing in relief as the pegasus began to unwrap the makeshift bandage.

“What happened?” she questioned, gasping lightly at the wound and applying a layer of gauze.

“We were attacked and she was shot. Moon Melody was able to get us away, but we spent the following two days running. I did my best to dress the wound and heal her, but I am not a medic,” explained Shining Moon, intentionally leaving out Arocez and the other assassin.

“Oh, you three must be so brave. I am Flutter Moon. What are your names? If you don’t mind me asking, that is,” spoke Flutter Moon softly.

“I am Blue Moon, this is Shining Moon, and the one shot is Moon Melody,” Blue Moon said, looking around the cottage at the animals scampering everywhere. “My goodness, do you just let them do whatever they want in your home?”

“Yeah, I am their caretaker,” whispered Flutter Moon, hiding behind her mane.

“What was that, I didn’t hear you,” said Blue Moon as he drew closer to her.

“Oh sorry, I-I am an animal caretaker,” Flutter Moon affirmed, drawing back in response to his proximity.

“Cool, do you have anything to eat? I’m famished.” Blue Moon chuckled, looking around for her kitchen.

“Just around the corner and to your right, I have a couple fresh flowers if you want a bite,” Flutter Moon offered. He immediately went off in search.

“Anyway, ignore his antics, we just need somewhere we can lay low for a moment. Then we will be out of your mane and--” began Shining Moon.

“No, I brought us here for a reason,” Moon Melody groaned as she attempted to raise herself into a seated position.

“Wait, really?” Shining Moon looked over to her. “Why?”

“To figure out what transpired here,” she replied, grimacing in pain as she rubbed her chest. “And what became of Dawn Lighter.”

“D-Dawn Lighter?” mumbled Flutter Moon, hiding behind her mane again.

“Yeah, we want to know what happened with her and Nightmare Moon. Do you know anything?” Shining Moon questioned.

“Oh, um, what do you want to know?” responded Flutter Moon hesitantly. “I don’t know much, I am sorry.”

“No no, that’s fine, do you--er, were you there?” pressed Shining Moon, sitting down and noting how anxious Flutter Moon was growing.

“Well, that day I was in charge of some song birds that were supposed to sing for Celestia. That was, um, my job for the Summer Sun Celebration,” Flutter Moon said.

“And what happened afterward? Why was Dawn Lighter there?” continued Shining Moon curiously.

“Well, she said Celestia had sent her to check on the preparations for the event, and she came to see me and how well I was doing with the birds. And she had this cute baby dragon that I had never seen and…” Flutter Moon beamed, proud she was of her birds before gasping. “I’m sorry that I forgot to ask you, but would you like some tea? Or something to drink?”

“No, that’s fine. And wait, did you say baby dragon? Do you know his name?” Shining interjected.

“Sadly it was wiped when Queen Nightmare Moon renamed me. I think he was her assistant or something? I don’t actually remember why he was there, sorry.” She shrugged. “But what does this have to do with you guys?”

“Well, it’s a little concerning that Nightmare Moon has the dragon as her assistant, it will be harder for us to get him out of her clutches.” Shining Moon sighed. “But we can deal with that later. Regardless, the reason all this matters, is because Nightmare Moon is evil. And we are going to do our best to stop her. And we need your help.”

“I-I don’t really think I could be of much use to you guys though,” countered Flutter Moon, gesturing around her house. “I’m just a humble caretaker.”

“Anypony and everypony, no matter how big or small, can make a difference,” added Blue Moon, stepping into the room with three sandwiches. “I hope you don’t mind me using your kitchen to make us some food.” Taking a bite, he passed the food over to Shining and Moon Melody who happily munched on their own.

“Anyway, sho we are shtarting dish rebellion ting,” Blue Moon mumbled, taking large bites and chewing thoroughly, sending flakes everywhere as he smacked his lips. “You wanna join?”

“W-well, I…” Looking away anxiously, she tried to draw deeper into her mane. “I-I don’t know. But my friends might be interested. They too were with me that night.”

“Friends? Who else was there?” Shining Moon wondered.

“Oh, I can, um, make you a list actually, so you can find them. Let me find a piece of paper, and I’ll write it down for you, okay?” Flutter Moon suggested, moving over to another room. She grabbed some scratch paper with a hoof, she quickly wrote out a list of names and places before giving them to Shining Moon. “When are you going to see them?”

“Now. Time is of the essence, and the more we know, the better. I think we only have a few days before Nightmare Moon becomes aware of our presence here, and I want to use that time as best we can,” announced Shining, digging through the saddlebag that Arocez had given him. He pulled out two knives and the prized hood, quickly donned his disguise, and slid the blades into place within the cloak. Twirling around, he faced the other three ponies. “How do I look?”

As Shining Moon made his way to the second destination, he contemplated his next moves. Gaining the best account of the events was their first priority. And… what next? Sure, knowing what happened would be important, but what use was the knowledge if they didn’t do anything with it? Perhaps once they got the full picture, a crucial detail could be discovered? But what could be used against Nightmare Moon? If she was just as mortal as Moon Melody, perhaps they could kill her?

Shaking his head of those thoughts, he trudged on. No, they would never stoop that low. No matter how far she pushed them, they would never become evil to fight evil. That was a line he made sure they would never cross.

Looking up from the list, he squinted his eyes as he barely made the outline of treetops in the distance. He hardly needed to stay hidden along this path, as it seemed that barely anypony walked along the dirt trail. Drawing closer, he identified the trees as apple trees. The trees seemed to stretch on till the Everfree, with a mind-boggling amount of apples tucked neatly in their branches. When he had read the name Sweet Apple Acres, he had imagined a quaint farm with a small orchard of a couple acres. Not the vast stretches of land dedicated to the trees he saw before him.

Following the path, he reached a fork that jutted one way towards a barn and another towards a house located a little farther away. Deciding to look for somepony at the house, he ambled in that general direction before spotting the outline of a pony ahead. Squinting, he tried to identify the individual, the shape growing more defined as the pony drew closer.

Shining Moon gulped as the massive form of a red stallion hesitantly walked towards him. Flutter Moon never mentioned anything about a pony this size. The white unicorn was tempted to change his plan and recruit this big fellow instead. Nonetheless, it seemed that this pony was barring his way, standing tall and imposing as he stomped his hoof to get Shining Moon’s attention. The unicorn stallion realized that his hood obscured his face and quickly took it off.
“Hello, my good stallion. My name is Shining Moon, and I am looking for Applejack Moon,” called Shining, smiling at the earth pony. The red giant looked him up and down before nodding and turning around.

“Follow me,” came the gruff reply as the farmer made his way towards the fields away from the barn. Curious as to how these farm ponies lived now without the sun, Shining Moon looked around and noticed a few trees appearing much livelier than others. He was about to ask how they had managed to keep the trees when they came across another pony. This one was orange, wore a stetson and currently was hooves-deep in the ground. She was muttering to herself, and it sounded like she was coaxing the tree awake, though Shining Moon couldn’t tell for sure what she was doing. As they drew closer, she gazed up and scowled at their presence.

“Macintosh Moon, I told ya ah don’t want anypony on our fields until we finish saving our trees!” exclaimed the mare as she dusted herself off. Macintosh just shrugged before lumbering off. Sighing, the orange pony turned to her guest. “What do you want?”

“Hello, my name is Shining Moon, and I’m looking for a mare by the name of Applejack Moon. Am I right to presume that’s you?” he asked, giving her a soft smile. Her mood dropped further at the name.

“I ain’t happy with it, but that’s me. What can I do for ya?” stated Applejack Moon as she began to fill in the hole she had dug.

“I came here for information. I was wondering if you knew anything about the day of the Summer Sun Celebration?” Shining Moon questioned.

“What's there to know? Ah was in charge of the catering for the event. And then, um… ah don’t want to talk about it with somepony ah don’t know,” Applejack Moon muttered as she rubbed her shoulder.

“That’s fine, I don’t want to pressure you into saying something you aren’t comfortable with. But I also came here to offer you a chance. A chance to fight back against what Nightmare Moon’s done,” Shining Moon proposed, drawing closer to her. “Maybe it’s not too late to undo everything that the queen has done. I can’t promise anything, but it’s better than nothing.”

“Ah don’t know, ah don’t feel comfortable going against the queen’s wishes.” Applejack Moon shook her head. “Ah believe what’s done is done, now we just move on with what we got.”

“All I am asking is for you to hear me out. I am bringing a few ponies to Flutter Moon’s cottage to talk and see what we can do. If it’s too much, you can leave whenever you want, but it would really help me if you came,” Shining Moon offered, extending a hoof.

“Wait, ‘others’? Who else is coming?” wondered the mare as she considered the gesture.

“Well, I wanted to have everypony that was involved that day and see if we can devise something. Flutter Moon was kind enough to give me a list of everypony that was there that day and--” began Shining Moon.

“Oh, not everypony is gonna come,” Applejack Moon sneered. “And if they are, then they have some ‘xplaining to do.”

“Did something happen?” Shining Moon remarked, noting the venom in her words.

“You could say that. Dasher Moon blamed everypony but herself that night, started a feud between the five of us. Moon Sparkle and ah agreed we could have done something more, but Dasher Moon wouldn’t hear it and blamed both of us for not caring,” Applejack Moon spat, shaking her head and stomping a hoof angrily. “She felt betrayed and flew off.”

“Oh,” muttered Shining Moon, “I didn’t know.”

“It’s fine, ah don’t blame ya. But ah doubt she will see you if you're bringing us all together again.” Applejack Moon sighed. “Ah will join you guys, but only to hear your plans. Anything ah don’t like and ah am out of there.”

Shining nodded. “Thank you.”

Crossing off another address and name, Shining Moon dropped down to the third place. Cloudominium. “Cloudominium? What kind of name is that?” he muttered as he looked above. Flutter Moon had said this house was different from the others, located in the sky somewhere towards the edge of the town. Squinting, he barely made out a dark hazy cloud a few hundred meters above. Sighing, he mentally kicked himself for not remembering the cloudwalking spell.

Sitting down, he racked through his brain, testing out a couple spells before smiling as a particular fond memory surfaced. A younger Dawn Lighter teaching him how to cast the spell, helping him keep it active and stable. “It’s really simple once you get the hang of it. You simply cast the spell like this, and make sure to keep your hooves above the cloud in order to stay balanced…”

Getting up, he confidently placed the spell before closing his eyes, smiling at the moment. He facehoofed. He probably looked stupid, standing there and grinning. Snagging a cloud with his magic, he brought it lower and hesitantly stepped onto it. Confirming that he wouldn’t fall right through, he wrapped the cloud in his magic and slowly levitated it. He chuckled again at how absurd he must look, flying around on a magic cloud, the wind whipping at his mane.

Upon reaching the house, he looked around and was surprised at the architecture of the home. Rainbow pools spilled over the sides of the porch, with packed cloud matter jutting out and giving the home a wintery look. Stepping onto the road that snaked its way up to the front door, Shining Moon made his way up the path and knocked.

“Coming!” cried a voice from inside before an almost comical sound of thudding and slamming could be heard within. Patiently waiting, Shining Moon stepped over to a running pool of the rainbow liquid, dipping a hoof in and retracting it. Noting the dye sticking to his hoof, he jerkily shook it off before returning to the doorstep.

“Hello, who is it!” the home owner exclaimed, swinging the door open violently and peering out. Pulling back the hood, Shining Moon was just about to introduce himself before he had the door slammed into his face. “Notinterestedgoodbye.” Taken aback by her rudeness, the white stallion sat stunned as he processed her words. Blinking a few times, he knocked again. “Go away!”

“Um, excuse me, but I am looking for a mare by the name of Dasher Moon!” called Shining as he banged on the door a couple more times.

“And who’s asking?” the vibrantly-colored pegasus questioned as she cracked the door open and peeked out with a magenta eye.

“Hello, my name is Shining Moon. I came for some information and a proposition,” he explained calmly, giving her a smile. Mares loved his grin.

“Yeah, that’s me. Propah... what now?” mumbled Dasher Moon as she opened the door more.

“An offer, I was--” began Shining Moon.

“Wait, are you from the Wonderbolts?! And I slammed the door right in your face!” Dasher Moon declared as all color drained from her face. “I’msosorrypleaseforgivemeIdidn’t--”

“No no no, I’m not from the Wonderbolts,” Shining Moon cut in, holding up a hoof. “I just want to talk about the Summer Sun Celebration.”

“Oh. What do you want to know?” she said, perking up. She moved to the doorframe, crossed her hooves, and leaned against it. “I was in charge of keeping the weather clear. Pretty easy, if you ask me.”

“Nice, was that all you did that day?” Shining Moon raised an eyebrow.

“Basically…” she muttered, averting her gaze. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Seems like a common answer among these mares,” whispered Shining Moon.

“What was that?” asked Dasher Moon, drawing closer.

“Nothing, as to my offer, we are starting a rebellion against Nightmare Moon,” continued Shining Moon. “And I am looking for ponies to join us.”

“Does that mean I could be a spy?” whooped Dasher Moon, fluttering her wings in excitement. Shining Moon rolled his eyes. She and Blue Moon would hit it off perfectly together with their foal-like behavior.

“Yes, you could be a spy. But first I want to know everything that happened that night with Nightmare Moon. Flutter Moon said you and a few of your friends, along with Dawn Lighter attempted to fight her, is that correct?”

“They aren’t my friends. Well, Flutter Moon is, but not the others,” scoffed Dasher Moon, shaking her head.

“Well you will have to put your differences behind you. We need to be united if we are to fight against Nightmare Moon. Join us, and together we could beat her,” offered Shining Moon.

“But the others will be there. Did they tell you what really took place? What happened to Dawn Lighter?” added Dasher Moon, scowling at the thought.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to figure out. There is a big hole where Dawn Lighter fits in, and I plan to figure out why,” declared Shining Moon. “So, will you join us?”

“Maybe.”

Three down, one to go. Bidding Dasher Moon farewell, Shining made his way back onto the ground before crossing out the third name and reaching the bottom. Sugarcube Corner. This was located closer to the heart of the town, and Shining Moon had to move much more stealthier through the place. As he came to the building, he noted the sagging walls of the second floor. It looked drooping and depressed, and the store had its sign flipped to closed.

He was just about to attempt to walk in when a cold feeling brushed against his spine. Something told him that he shouldn’t step into the building. Passing it off as the wind, he unlocked the door with magic and took one step in. Immediately noticing a temperature drop and an eerier aura that seemed to ebb off of the walls. Trusting his gut, he withdrew from the building. As he shook his head, he decided to make his way back towards Flutter Moon’s cottage. Perhaps Moon Pie could be spoken with later.

Chapter [6] A clearer story and muddled emotions

Shining Moon took one last look around the perimeter before nodding his head. He had just finished placing magical wards around the area that would alert him if anypony attempted to sneak up on their group. Confident that he would be notified by a signal spell attached to his horn, he began to make his way back to the cottage. With the arrival of Dasher Moon, they were just about to begin before Blue Moon had made the suggestion of not repeating past mistakes. Going back out alone was never easy, and after being bombarded with pleas from Moon Sparkle to fix his cloak with a patch kit she brought, he was left with a feeling of nakedness. He had begun to grow accustomed to the dark clothes. Being a mysterious figure prowling in the night satisfied his inner colt.

As he was heading back, he contemplated what needed to happen next. Each of them were not telling him their complete story, and now that they all were here, none of them could push off to the others. No more diverges, no more distractions, the full story. He needed answers, and one of them would tell everything. As he made his way into the living room, Shining Moon was greeted by Blue Moon with a wave. That was all the hello he received, however, as Blue Moon was lounging in a chair, a smirk on his face as he viewed the room. Sparkle, Applejack, and Dasher Moon were all glaring at each other, with Flutter Moon anxiously looking between the three of them.

Quickly defusing the bubbling anger that was just about to spill, Shining Moon cut through the silence, “Hey, Moon Sparkle, were you able to finish patching the cloak?” he asked hesitantly, hoping to divert their attention onto him.
“Yes, darling, here it is,” replied Moon Sparkle, not even acknowledging him with a look and throwing the clothes at him with her magic.

“Ah, thank you,” he whispered before turning to Blue Moon. “How long have they been doing this?”

“Since you left. Five bits it’s Moon Sparkle that goes off first,” Blue Moon murmured back, munching on his fourth sandwich. “I watched her patch that whole thing while glaring at the other two. Ever seen somepony sew angrily?

“Now is not the time to be making bets on others about to blow up at each other!” Shining Moon hissed. “I need to fix this now.” Clearing his throat, he assessed his options and stepped over to Flutter Moon. “How bad is it?”

“Not good, I’m afraid. I think they might fight and hurt one another.” She gulped, eyeing each of them.

“Can you do something?” he asked and lit his horn.

“No, I won’t be able to do anything if they get physical. I hate being so useless,” she mumbled, her wings drooping.

“Can you tell me why they are mad then? What made them hate each other?” continued Shining Moon, noticing her reaction and moving closer to reassure her.

“I’ll tell you what happened,” Dasher Moon growled, pointing a hoof at Sparkle and Applejack Moon. “They did nothing, nothing at all to fight against Nightmare Moon. They are to blame for everything that has happened since then. With Celestia, with Dawn Lighter, everything!”

“Well, ah sure hear a lot of blame shifting from somepony that was right there with us too! Why don’tcha give an explanation for that?” spat Applejack Moon, scowling at her.

“Can somepony please tell me what happened then!?” Shining Moon exclaimed angrily and snorted as he looked at each of the mares in turn.

“Dawn Lighter is what happened!” Dasher Moon finally answered as she turned to Shining Moon. “She was there! She knew about Nightmare Moon, knew about how to potentially beat her, knew where to go. But because she was so smart, Nightmare Moon turned her to the dark side! Cursed her or something, and you two abandoned her! You betrayed her! You betrayed... me…” She whirled away from them, tears in her eyes. “This was a mistake. I shouldn’t have come here.”

“Please, Dasher, stay. We need you, I need you. What would Dawn Lighter think if she saw you giving up like this?” asked Shining Moon, causing the blue mare to halt in her tracks.

“No, she’s right. Ah shouldn't even be involved in these sort of things anyway. Ah got a family business to run, ah can’t waste time here,” Applejack Moon mumbled, making her way towards the exit. “And to top it off, ah’m stuck with a changed name. Ah mean come on, ‘Applejack Moon’? What sorta dimwitted name is that. No pony is gonna take me seriously with that. Stupid Nightmare Moon. Ah need to get back to working, too many folks to deal with. Shoulda never left the farm.”

“At least your business is doing well. I haven't gotten a single customer in two weeks!” remarked Moon Sparkle, scoffing and turning away from them. “How can a lady expect to make a living if nopony is interested in her work?”

“Pfft, here you go again with your work. It’s not like anypony likes dresses anyway, those are for snobbish nobles that want to impress each other with their wealth. No offense, Blue Moon,” retorted Dasher Moon, grinning at the stallion and shrugging with a knowing smirk.

“At least she has a decent job, unlike you!” added Applejack Moon indignantly, turning to the cyan pegasus. “You do nothing but sleep and slack off! All ah see of you is a lazy mare who’s never worked a day in her life!” And that was the final straw, as all three began to yell and threaten one another.

Shining Moon attempted to break up the verbal fight, but it seemed that his words did little to sway the three angry mares. Sighing, he placed a protective shield around them so that they wouldn’t hurt each other. Looking around for any support, he rolled his eyes as he spotted Blue Moon grinning and munching on another sandwich. He turned to Flutter Moon, only to find her mumbling incoherently and squeaking at each rude word. It seemed that she would take all three sides and was internally struggling to choose.

Rubbing his temples, he sighed again. It seemed all his hopes of being united were now shattered and broken before him. He had half a mind to simply kick them out. His horn lit up, letting a few sparks fly as the warning signal spell played its part. Yet he paid it no attention as he attempted to defuse the situation. How could he bring them together and expect to lead them if they fought over this? His thoughts, however, were interrupted by the sound of clipping hooves against wood.

“Enough!” cried Moon Melody as she cautiously descended the stairs to stand before the bickering group. “Moon Sparkle, I know what it’s like to go through change and try to hold onto what you know, only for it to slip away from your grasp. It is hard dealing in a world that you are no longer comfortable in,” Moon Melody noted, grimacing as she rubbed her chest again. Moon Sparkle nodded slowly. Moon Melody then turned to Flutter Moon.

“I know what it’s like to feel inadequate, like you are worthless and get in the way of others,” she assured as she placed a conforming hoof onto the timid pegasus’ shoulder. “If it wasn’t for Shining and Blue Moon who helped me through the forest and you, who nursed me back to nearly full health, I wouldn’t be standing here with you all. Don’t doubt your value if others see the best in you.” Flutter Moon looked up, meeting the kind gaze of Moon Melody.

The pink alicorn hobbled over and straightened the apple farmer’s stetson with her magic. “And I know what it feels like to be scared and confused about your name. Uncomfortable with what you are given and trying to hide away from others. Yet we can reject our initial feelings and move on. Push past first impressions and see what you can offer and help with.” Applejack Moon, touched by the gesture, placed a hoof to her heart and nodded before returning to her previous position.

Moving on, Moon Melody gave a lopsided but gentle smile to Dasher Moon. “I know how much it hurts to be rejected by your friends and those you considered to be family. And I understand your anger towards others, lashing out at those that may deserve it. Yet that’s exactly what Nightmare Moon wants us to be. She wants to divide us over the mistakes we’ve made. She wants confusion, strife, loneliness, and anger among those that may seek to oppose her.

“But we need to recognize those that we love, and those that love us,” continued Moon Melody, rubbing against a blushing Shining Moon. “Love must conquer what Nightmare Moon has used to keep us divided. Love must unite us against a threat that seeks to steal and destroy. And love will be what brings us together to shine light into this darker world.” She nuzzled Shining’s side before stepping away from him.

“I won’t forget you either, Blue Moon. You have shown bravery and taken on tasks a noble would have run from.” Moon Melody gave him a quick peck on the cheek. “You manage to keep calm when the situation is anything but. Thank you.” Now it was Blue Moon’s turn to blush at her words.

“And so, I plead with you all. Push past your differences, your blame. Stand strong against an enemy that may seem unbeatable. United, we can defeat her, divided we will lose without her so much as lifting a hoof,” stated Moon Melody sincerely, looking at all of them. “Now, who will--”

Yet before she could finish, a sharp rattle came from the front door of the cottage. “I thought you said we would be alone?” whispered Blue Moon, getting up from his chair. Shining Moon hushed him with a hoof and drew a knife from his belt.

“Hello?” came a muffled voice from the door, followed by more knocking.

“Flutter Moon, answer the door!” hissed Shining Moon as he readied himself for action. Hesitantly, the yellow pegasus inched over to the door and cracked it open.

“Yes, hello?” she said softly, looking at the intruder before gasping.

“Hey, Flutter Moon, it’s me, Spike. Is Moon Sparkle here? I think her sister said she was here for something, and I need to talk with her,” stated a young voice casually, attempting to peer inside Flutter Moon’s cottage.

“Oh um...” Not sure how to answer, Flutter Moon opened the door wider and looked back inside at her guests for support. However, one pony recognized the familiar voice and zealously pushed past Flutter Moon and tackled him.

“Spike, it’s so good to see that you’re alright!” exclaimed Shining Moon happily, tightly hugging his pseudo-brother. “I thought we would have to storm the castle to get you free! What happened?”

“S-Shining? What… why… how are you here? I thought…” mumbled Spike, dumbfounded.

“What’s going on out here?” “Hey, I know you!” “Spike?” came the jumbled voices of the many mares as they stepped out to inspect the newest arrival.

“Wait, why are you all here?” Spike asked as he looked around at the group, scratching his head in confusion.

“Erm, that's a little complicated,” replied Shining Moon hesitantly.

“And can be answered at another time. Please, Spike, come in. It seems that you came here for a reason, is that correct?” Moon Melody beckoned the group back into the cottage before closing the door.

“Uh, yeah, how did you know? I was looking to speak with Moon Sparkle. And--” began Spike.

“Hang on, how do you know all our names?” Shining Moon wondered.

“Wait, you were part of the renaming ceremony, weren't you! Do you know our previous names?” questioned Applejack Moon, hope in her voice as she pushed herself to the front of the group.

“What? Oh no, no, Queen Nightmare Moon wiped me of my memories too! I’m sorry, I only know your new names, not your old ones,” he answered dejectedly, before smiling. “But this is even better than I hoped! You are all here!”

“How did you even get here? Weren’t you in Canterlot?” asked Moon Sparkle.

“Lemme get to that. So, a few days ago, I had finally gotten some time to myself for some much needed R&R, when Dawn Lighter teleported me here in Ponyville! She had ransacked the library in search of a book and demanded that I get it for her. I think it was Predictions and Prophecies or something, anyway I found it and then she read it and teleported off in a hurry,” explained Spike and looked around at the circle of ponies watching with bated breath.

“The book sounds vaguely familiar. Why do you think she was interested in it?” Shining Moon implored as he leaned closer to the drake.

“I think… I think there might be a new prophecy.”

Chapter [7] Intriguing discoveries and final decisions

View Online

Dawn Lighter was pacing back and forth within the library in Canterlot Castle. On the surface, she appeared to be just slightly troubled, mumbling to herself. Delving deeper, however, would reveal the debate she was having with her host.

“Please?” asked Twilight within.

No,” stated Dawn Lighter, gritting her teeth.

“What if I just read a book? Or simply stretched my legs? Anything at all, please!” begged Twilight. “I just want to feel something in the world by my own volition! I promise I won’t try anything!”

No. I will be forever in control. Lose any hope you have of trying to gain back your body. It is mine now.” Dawn Lighter shook her head.

“Could you at least let me read a book? Something short or productive for me to think about,” pushed Twilight, not wanting to settle for nothing. The spirit thought for a moment, hiding her intentions from Twilight.

Fine. It would be nice to immerse myself in something outside of serving my queen anyway,” she finally said, before diving into her memories to look for a book to locate. “Interesting, how did…” Suddenly lighting her horn, Dawn Lighter teleported with a pop.

Touching down on the doorstep of Golden Oak Library, she quickly unlocked the door with her magic and stepped into the building. Flicking on a light, she passed through the main hall into the area that shelved all of the books. Rows of neatly stacked books sat in spaced racks with a simple table in the middle. Looking around, she moved over to the first row and began to skim through the many tomes.

Twilight attempted to peer into the spirit’s mind, wondering why they were here in the first place. However her attempts were fruitless, and she could only watch as Dawn Lighter began to grow reckless in her search. The spirit threw books from their spots, tossing them behind her without any care. Soon enough, a clump of them formed on the floor as she moved onto another row. Section after section and row after row she went. Yet still she remained unsatisfied, not even caring about the books she trampled underneath.

Growing angrier, she started to rip whole racks down which scattered more books and smashed covers. Bubbling in vexation as she reached the end, Dawn Lighter hungrily looked around for more. Stomping over to the dining room, she located a single book that lay at the end table there. Her hopes rose somewhat as she brought the book closer, only for them to be dashed as she wrathfully slammed it against a wall.

Growling now, she stepped upstairs to continue her rampage. Entering Twilight's room, she began flinging random objects around in her search. Finding nothing of use, Dawn Lighter continued her frenzy into the guest room. After scrutinizing every room for any more books and still coming up short of her target, Dawn Lighter let out a shriek of anger. “Please, Dawn Lighter, stop!” cried Twilight, aghast at the destruction.

Where is it!” demanded Dawn Lighter, snorting and twisting around for any spot she may have missed.

“Where is what!? I’ll help you find whatever it is, just don’t break anything else, please!” pleaded Twilight.

The book. The book of Predictions and Prophecies! Where is it?!” exclaimed Dawn Lighter, her horn sizzling as she grew tempted to burn down the place in her search.

“I-I don’t know!” declared Twilight, going through her memories.

I know you don’t, because I can’t find it in here either!” continued Dawn Lighter as she waded back to the middle of the main room. “You were here last, you should know!

“M-maybe Spike knows where it is, or…” began Twilight, racking her brain for potential reasons. For once, Dawn Lighter accepted the suggestion. She summoned the purple and green dragon onto the pile of fallen literature.

“Woah, Dawn Lighter, please give me some warning before you do that! Wait, are we where I think we--What did you do to the place!” Spike exclaimed as he dusted himself off and looked around.

“Where is it!” yelled Dawn Lighter, staring down the drake and lighting her horn again.

“Huh?” Spike flinched, closing his eyes and putting up his arms in defense.

“The book, Predictions and Prophecies! Where is it?! I have looked everywhere and can’t find it!” stated Dawn Lighter angrily, motioning to the chaos around her.

“Okay, okay, slow down. If I show you where it is, do you promise not to hurt me?” he asked, cracking an eye open.

“Yes,” hissed Dawn Lighter, taking a step back and disengaging her horn. Inside, however, Twilight was desperately trying to call out to the drake. Wishing to tell him how sorry she was, that she loved him, anything to show affection to him. She hated how she could do nothing while he was treated like dirt.

Spike gulped before stepping over the many books and making his way up to Twilight’s bedroom. “I had put the book in my cupboard as soon as you and the rest of the group went off in search of the Elements,” explained Spike as he stepped over to his small bed. He pushed it over to reveal a single hole that would have been missed by an untrained eye. Bending down, he inserted a digit and lifted the flap to reveal a couple of comics and a red book. It seemed that the tome shone in the dim lighting as the two looked upon it. Engraved in the front were the words ‘Predictions and Prophecies. By Star Swirl the Bearded.’ Spike hoisted the book up and presented it to Dawn Lighter. “Here ya go.”

Whisking it away, she stepped over to a table and flipped towards the middle of the book. She turned a couple pages before skimming through multiple until she reached the page she was looking for. She traced a hoof over the words before gasping and closing the book with a smack. Looking around again, she shrugged before teleporting into the night, leaving a confused Spike. Grumbling to himself, he surveyed his surroundings before sighing and getting to work on cleaning up the place.

Appearing back in the castle, Dawn Lighter immediately made her way to the queen’s quarters. The book pressed to her side, she galloped through the corridors before locating two silvery doors.

“My Queen!” exclaimed Dawn Lighter as she burst through the doorway. Taking note of two sets of eyes immediately trained on her, she disregarded the second and focused on the first. She breathed deeply for a moment before relaxing her features. “I must speak with you urgently and privately.”

“Very well. Canopus, please complete the first task that I had given you. And don’t fail me again,” dismissed Nightmare Moon, turning towards Dawn Lighter and pointing a hoof. “And what, pray tell, has got you so excited? And what do you have there?”

“I believe I have found something that could either spell our downfall, or secure our reign forever,” began Dawn Lighter after the other pony had left the room.

“Very well, walk with me,” stated Nightmare Moon as she stepped over to an exit. The dark unicorn followed her superior down the darkened hallway and into the next room.

“So, I have discovered the book that predicted your arrival back to Equestria. As well as something more,” spoke Dawn Lighter, keeping pace with the queen as she strode through another doorway. “A new prophecy. This one speaks of five individuals and a coming war.”

“A war? With whom? Last that I heard, Equestria had rather peaceful relations with other nations,” remarked Nightmare Moon, pondering Dawn Lighter’s words with a wing to her chin.

“Perhaps not an outward threat, but an inward one instead. Perhaps your story is not over just yet,” proposed Dawn Lighter. “In the meantime, however, maybe we should hide away this new prophecy. Not just anypony should be able to stumble upon this book like my host did.”

“Actually, I had wished for your presence for another matter. But now that this has arisen, perhaps we can kill two birds with one stone,” Nightmare Moon mused, changing directions to enter another hall. “I wish to show you something within the Canterlot Library Archives. A secret and restricted room that I recently discovered in my acquaintance with this new castle. Long ago, Celestia and I uncovered books of unspeakable power written by a long forgotten mage who specialized in eldritch and powerful magics. I had offered to learn the knowledge and usher in previously unfathomable futures. Celestia had declined and countered that there was some knowledge not worth knowing. Now I find that she has those same books locked away in some secret chamber. But I will not be weak as my dear sister was, and shall put that knowledge to good use.

Entering the library, the two rejected a librarian’s offer for help and made their way towards the back end of the building. Stopping in between two sections, Nightmare Moon stepped forward and brought two books with a star and moon insignia down. With a mechanical click, a passageway opened up before them, and they descended. After two flights of spiraling stairs, the two stepped into a massive underground room.

“It seems that in my banishment, Celestia saw fit to let the sands of time bury the knowledge of such a place. Or perhaps she had realized her mistake and forbade the knowledge from escaping her grasp,” noted Nightmare Moon as she surveyed the dust and cobwebs everywhere. Lighting her horn, she sent a pulse of energy that scoured the signs of age and neglect that had collected over the years. “Now then, there is a particular tome that I am looking for. It was a book about how to summon great beings of power and bend them to your will. It also teaches spells that strengthen different areas in the body, such as wing power, physical muscle, and even magical strength. Though all of them have not been tested, only hypothesized. These spells could only work on magical creatures, such as ponies. The author had mostly scrapped his ideas, but kept some of his work written down. Most of them would never be allowed to be used nowadays, because they are highly dangerous.”

“Are you sure this place is unknown to the nobles? What if somepony stumbled upon this by accident?” asked Dawn Lighter.

“I am confident that Celestia would never reveal this place to another soul. She would be too embarrassed by its existence after… Anyway, perhaps we can place a detection spell that will alert us if anypony except ourselves lays a hoof on it here,” offered Nightmare Moon, taking the red book from Dawn Lighter. She then placed it upon a pedestal and enchanted it. “Now then, let us find that book I was talking about. I have many plans for it in the future.”

“Well, storming the castle is out of the question. We can’t outright declare war on the throne quite yet. A more subtle way will be needed to get in,” stated Shining Moon. Applejack Moon had politely excused herself, claiming she needed to get back to the farm. After the shell-shocking news, the rest of the group began to think of potential ways of getting the book.

“We don’t even know where they are hiding it yet. Perhaps it’s in the huge vault that the castle has,” added Moon Melody.

“Well, we can factor that out already actually. Celestia changed it so that only she could access it. But now that she is gone, Nightmare Moon can’t get in easily. It will be a tough nut to crack for her, and I doubt she has already broken into it,” offered Blue Moon.

“Where else? I can’t think of a more secure place than there. Where could she hide a book?” asked Moon Melody.

All of them scratched their heads in thought, trying to think of a potential place. Dasher Moon was just about to offer an option, before shaking her head.“Duh! It’s so obvious!” exclaimed Shining Moon after an idea hit him, forcing them to all look at him “If you want to stash something as basic as a book, but don’t want to advertise that you're concealing something. Then where would you hide it?” Still seeing their blank looks, he continued, “Hide it in a place full of other books. Somewhere no one will think twice that it would be suspicious. Hide it in a library.”

“The Canterlot library! Of course! It’s a secure place, but it is also open to anypony,” said Blue Moon.

“Great, well, we somewhat have an idea of where the book could be hidden, but won’t it take like forever to find it?” stated Dasher Moon.

“Perhaps, but I doubt Nightmare Moon would just put it on a random shelf. It must be hidden somewhere that nopony would go,” added Blue Moon.

“What about the restricted room?” suggested Moon Melody. Now it was her turn to receive blank looks from everypony.

“The restricted room? I have never heard of such a place.” Shining Moon frowned, shaking his head.

“Me neither, and I have been to that library plenty of times. I’ve combed through that place at least twice in search of knowledge for my bloodline, tracing it all the way back to Princess Platinum,” insisted Blue Moon.

“Well, Celestia showed me the place when I first became an alicorn. Neither of us truly understood what happened, and we searched for potential answers there. Sadly, we found nothing of use,” answered Moon Melody.

“Well where is this restricted room? How do we get in?” wondered Shining Moon.

“It is located towards the back end of the library I believe, with two books that have a sun and moon symbol on them. You must pull both down in order to gain access. There you walk down some steps and into a great room that is filled with many wonderfully dangerous books. Whoever goes in there must be very careful,” cautioned Moon Melody.

“That brings us to a good question, who will be the one who gets this book?” declared Blue Moon. “All of us can’t just waltz in and take it, I am sure Nightmare Moon has placed defenses so that nopony can just come and go as they please. Maybe some guards that will alert her if anypony suspicious goes in.”

“I also know for a fact that Celestia had cast a spell that made it impossible to teleport inside the room. So we will have to physically get in there.” Moon Melody sighed.

“Why don’t I go? I can be in and out of there super quickly, nopony would suspect it,” offered Dasher Moon.

“You could do that, but you also have a much higher chance of being caught. If you are seen just zooming in and out of the library, someplace that you do not normally go. Then there is bound to be somepony who sees you and grows suspicious. No, we need to do this carefully. We need to sneak into the library,” Blue Moon asserted. “We grab the book and run back as fast as we can.”

“And by we you mean one of us, two at most. We need somepony who is quiet, stealthy, and won’t cause suspicion. And possibly another to keep a lookout. But who?” added Shining Moon.

“Flutter Moon!” exclaimed Dasher Moon excitedly.

“What?” squeaked the shy pegasus.

“What do you say, Flutter Moon? Think you could handle the mission?” asked Shining Moon sincerely.

“No! What if I crack under pressure? I’ll snap like a twig!” protested Flutter Moon, fluttering her wings in agitation.

“It’s perfect! Flutter Moon will sneak into the library and find the book,” declared Blue Moon, nodding his head in approval.

“But… but I, I…” Flutter Moon stuttered, before sighing. “Okay. I’ll do it.”

Chapter [8] Conversations, with a book

It felt strange, returning to a new normal. After the group had settled with the plan, she had been surprised that they chose to delay any action. Though after Shining Moon had explained their reasoning, it made more sense. “It’s too early to try anything. I believe Nightmare Moon may still be on edge with our escape and will have security tighter than normal. We need to fade from the focus of the public eye, so that even if something does happen, Nightmare Moon won’t first think of us,” he had said. He had remained in the cottage to offer a few more encouraging words to Flutter Moon after everyone else had left.

“So, tell me again, what exactly do you want me to do?” Flutter Moon had asked, her head still trying to wrap around the plan.

“Right now, you don’t need to do anything. Moon Melody is with Dasher Moon to scout potential spots to set up a hidden camp. Blue Moon is working with Moon Sparkle to try and duplicate that cloak I have, as well as make some connections with nobles. I still have to talk with Moon Pie, as well as convince Applejack Moon to somehow help us. I firmly believe that you all, no matter how you feel, can make a difference and help us in your own ways.” Shining Moon had patted her shoulder with a hoof. “Now you may not see me for a while, but I will be looking over this quaint little town. Perhaps Celestia sent Dawn Lighter here for a reason. Anyway, I will inform you when the time is ripe for us to move into our next phase. For now, simply settle down. Perhaps build a routine to head to the Royal Canterlot Library Archives maybe once a week or so. Be shy, but also be brave. Speak with Moon Sparkle if you need to contact me for anything.”

And with that, he had left her. Three weeks had passed, and still no word from him came. Flutter Moon had begun to grow convinced that nothing would happen. Though she still did as he had asked, visiting Canterlot and checking out books on a variety of subjects.

Today, she was simply stargazing out of her window into the night sky. The full moon still firmly in place illuminated the rest of the world with its soft glow. Flutter Moon’s cottage stood out in warm contrast, bathing the area in a yellow glow. Her home had attracted some unwanted attention over that time, as quite a few animals seemed to enjoy the yellow hue that her lights produced. She had spent most of her days explaining to them that the world was different now, and that they could no longer rely on her to produce the light they needed.

Occasionally she would visit Sparkle Moon, who appeared to be doing much better with her business. Now supported by the resistance, the white mare had grown her business and had been thinking of expanding to a second location. Flutter Moon was in full support of this, though she personally still felt like she had been forgotten by them. She had expressed her concerns to Sparkle Moon, yet the unicorn had dismissed her and instead inspired her to be patient.

Moving away from the window, Flutter Moon checked the time. Inspecting her list, she grabbed a bag of seeds and slipped out her front door. Walking over to one of her many bird feeders, she smiled at the many chattering avians before dumping their food. She hummed to herself, smiling as a friendly bird hopped over to her mane and nestled in. As she was just about to head inside, she noted that one of the pigeons had something connected to its leg. Curiously, she drew closer and unraveled the parchment.

Dear Flutter Moon,
I know this is an unconventional way of conversing, but sudden pressures have amounted, and personal meetings will not be possible right now. However, now is the time to act. Moon Melody has informed me that to enter into the secret chamber, you must locate two books with a Sun and Moon design emblazoned on their spines. We believe these are located in the classified section. Pulling both down will open the place, and you will be able to enter. A pony will be keeping watch over the entrance and should notify you if something is amiss. Good luck and stay safe.
Shining Moon
P.S. Dispose of this as soon as you can.

Heart pounding, she rolled the message up and looked around. Not finding anypony spying on her, she quickly returned to her home and tossed the message into her living room’s fireplace. Getting her breath under control and wiping her hooves, Flutter Moon then began to tidy up her cottage. Ten minutes later, she finished and grabbed a saddle bag. She slipped out the front door and made her way towards town and its train station, ready to be brave.

Sitting alone on the train, Flutter Moon’s apprehension rose as the landscape flew by her. Tonight was the night, this was what they had planned for. She wondered who would be the sentry, but perhaps it would be better if she didn’t know. Her thoughts drifted towards the library as a certain pony came to her mind. During her visits to Canterlot, she had met a cute stallion by the name of Scribble Moon. He was a cartoonist who had been doing research for his career in the entertainment industry. They had bumped into each other when she had checked out a book detailing bird wings, and he had wished to use it as a basis for his drawings. From there, their friendship blossomed, and Flutter Moon secretly found herself looking forward to seeing him whenever she visited the city.

Her thoughts were cut short when the train came to a screeching halt and the conductor announced their stop. Stepping out into the fresh air, Flutter Moon breathed in and out a few times to steady herself. As she walked towards her destination, she noticed the construction around her. Pegasi and earth ponies hammered away, while unicorns lifted silvery metal with swirling designs to be fitted around the exterior of buildings. She shook her head as she witnessed ponies digging up dirt and tree roots. And watched in horror as they cut them up and tossed them into a pile to probably be burned. Her heart ached as she watched the destruction of trees that Celestia had planted specifically for a better environment and a healthy city. All torn down just to make room for more flashy decorations. But she reminded herself that she was here on a mission. Perhaps once she had completed that, she could come back and protest the city’s efforts.

Finally reaching the Canterlot Library Archives, Flutter Moon stepped through. “Hello, Miss Dessi Moon! How are you doing today?” she asked as she passed the librarian’s counter, happily waving at the mare.

“I am doing good, Flutter Moon. And you don’t have to call me that, why, I am only five years older than you, dear,” called Dessi Moon, looking up and smiling at the pleasantries. “Is there anything that I can help you with today?”

“No thanks, I think I know where I am going,” replied Flutter Moon, smiling in contrast to her nagging worries as she ventured further into the library.

“Well, if you need anything, you know where to find me,” finished Dessi Moon, returning to her book. Flutter Moon bit her lower lip in thought as she tried to remember what her instructions had been. Two books with a Sun and Moon on their spines if she recalled correctly. Another question was where would these two be located within the classified section? Sighing to herself, she just wished she wasn’t going in alone.

Contemplating this, Flutter Moon nearly ran into a familiar pony. “Oh hey, Flutter Moon. Fancy seeing you here,” stated a familiar muffled voice. Scribble Moon chuckled through the pen in his mouth and looked up from his seat at one of the tables. Flutter Moon took a glance at his work, which seemed to be a sketch of a mouse with questionably large ears. “How are you doing today?”

“I am doing well. How are you? How goes your drawing?” wondered Flutter Moon, walking closer to him in curiosity.

“It’s going well, still trying to learn good back structures and leg support for certain animals. But I am improving in other areas. Would you like to see what I have drawn today so far?” offered Scribble, quickly shuffling his stack of papers as he fumbled around in search of his past works in hopes of impressing her.

“Well, it looks wonderful already, but I actually have something that I am looking for today,” Flutter Moon declined, smiling at him before starting to head off towards another section.

“Oh! Before you go, would you um… I wanted to work on drawing ponies. Would you be willing to um, well, pose for me, perhaps?” he proposed. Both blushed at the question. Flutter Moon’s heart jumped in her chest, and she looked away bashfully.

“Um, well, I don’t know…” she mumbled as she turned around, her mind in turmoil at the prospect.

“It won’t take long, I promise. I just wanted to make something beautiful to remember you by,” continued Scribble Moon boldly, slowly sliding a fresh piece of paper over and giving her a soft smile. “Please?”

“I-I... I don’t know. Maybe later, okay? I really need to do something else first. But once I finish, I promise I’ll come back, alright?” deflected Flutter Moon, cringing inside and hating to deny him.

“Oh, okay.” The earth pony sighed before perking up. “I’ll hold you to it then. Do you need any help?”

“I think I am good, thank you for asking though,” stated Flutter Moon, wishing him good luck and moving on.

For her, it seemed like hours had passed as she combed meticulously through the rows of books in the classified section. When she checked the clock, only three hours had passed, and she assumed she had another two before she would go through all of it. It wasn’t until the fourth to last section that gave her pause. Going back, she noticed a break in the pattern of display shelves. Drawing closer, Flutter Moon shivered as the familiar feeling of magic permeated the air. Hesitantly, she placed a hoof where a shelf section should have been and was surprised to find it passing through. Growing bolder, she fully stepped through the facade… and found more books. Two caught her attention, standing out against the full colors of the rest of the section. These had to be what she was looking for.

Flutter Moon was just about to use a stool and grab the books, when she hesitated. Did anypony see her enter? Had she already set off a warning when she passed through the hidden barrier? She moved to the very edge of it and looked around. Spotting a colt and his mother walking by, she waved at them, yet they paid her no attention as they continued. Growing more confident, Flutter Moon stepped over and brought the two books down with a soft click. A few more mechanical clanks later, a spiraling passageway opened up for her. “Well, there is no turning back now. Onwards and downwards, I guess,” she whispered as she began to descend the stairwell. She jumped in surprise as the exit behind her closed with a foreboding metallic click. Taking note of a lever to the side, she hoped it opened the entrance.

As she stepped down, she noticed some lovely runes that were scratched along the walls. Some she could read, warning her to turn back. Others seemed to be equations foreign to her, too complex to understand. A few etches seemed to be as old as the castle itself. “Come now, Flutter Moon, let’s not be distracted by the nice-looking scribbles. Stay focused on the task,” she muttered to herself. Eventually, after three flights of stairs, she reached the bottom.

As soon as she stepped into the chamber, she was immediately greeted with a warmth that she had not felt in a long time. While the library above seemed standard and musty, this felt magical and full of life. Like a host preparing their home for guests, the place smelled welcoming and open.Countless feelings assaulted her senses, and she tried to distinguish between them. It felt like the books were alive and calling out to her, asking her to pick them up and read their contents.

Another feeling, that one of being watched made her shiver. She scanned the room, looking for anypony hidden within the shadows. Yet she couldn’t find anyone, which bothered her more. Wandering over to a nearby staircase that led upward, she traced a hoof along its rails as she ascended and discovered not a trace of dust along the wooden banister.

Reaching the top, she sighed as it seemed like her day was going to be filled with looking through more books. One tome in particular caught her eye. It lay on a pedestal, illuminated by the moon’s light that came from a small window. Flutter Moon was surprised to find natural light flooding into the room. A small window drew her attention. She gazed outside, captivated by the perfectly full moon. She let out a gasp when the lunar body that had been stagnant for what seemed like an eternity suddenly began to move across the night sky. She sat in stunned awe as its moonlight slowly changed and shifted through the room.

Flutter Moon realized how much time she had wasted by sitting and staring. “Come on, stay focussed,” she chided herself. Drawing away from the window, she returned her gaze back to the book on the pedestal. Was this what she was looking for? Stepping hesitantly closer, her sense of being watched increased. But her curiosity got the better of her, and she flipped open to the first page. Immediately, a wave of intelligence brushed up against her mind, seeking to penetrate her very psyche. Not knowing any form of mind defense, Flutter Moon’s mental barriers were thrust aside as whatever the thing was, found what it was looking for. It then withdrew from her, leaving her panting and confused.

“So, thief, do you have anything to say for yourself?” came a masculine voice, which seemed to echo within the chamber and around her without any source. Flutter Moon jumped in surprise.

“W-who’s there? Where are you?” Flutter Moon called anxiously, desperately looking around.

“I would be the book that you were about to steal. I saw you enter into here, barely within my vision range. Seeing a non-unicorn set hoof into the sacred Room of Knowledge without accompanying a unicorn, what a disgrace. Now, as to my earlier question, do you have anything to say for yourself, thief?” said the book accusingly.

“I… I don’t consider myself a thief…” muttered Flutter Moon, hiding behind her mane.

“Don’t try lying to me, I scanned your mind and saw your intentions to take one of the books here, clearly me, as I am one of the tomes of the great--” began the book.

“Actually, I don’t want to steal you… Mr. Book, I am looking for the book of Predictions and Prophecies. Could you tell me which one that would be?” Flutter Moon found a new courage welling inside of her as she interrupted the hardback. After all, it was only paper, it couldn’t hurt her.

“Well, I’ll be. Such rudeness to one of the most ancient and greatest books in history, I will have none of it here,” stated the book quite pompously. “Why do you search for this work anyway? Unless…” Suddenly, it took hold of her mind again. Yet this time, instead of searching for her intentions, it went deeper. It analyzed her past, picking up memories and displaying them for its purpose. All was laid bare before it as it looked through the resistance’s plans, its leader, the other members. It watched previous events play out, took in consideration Flutter Moon’s feelings, and had a special interest in Nightmare Moon. All the while Flutter Moon sat as she was pushed and probed, unable to do anything but wait until the entity was satisfied.

Finally withdrawing from her mind, the book let out a deep sigh. “It seems that I am in the wrong. Please forgive me, little one. You have been the first pony I have spoken to in nearly a thousand years. I see within you your denied destiny, and the tragedy that has struck. However, you are not the one that I await, so I am sorry to say I am unable to provide assistance in your endeavors. Perhaps in the future, there will be a time, but now, it is not. I will, however, tell you of what you seek. But be cautious, there will be a price that must be paid. Are you willing?

“I think so…” murmured Flutter Moon, surprised by the turn of events.

“Very well, I give only one warning. Turn back now, and you will be spared of the coming events. Proceed, and I cannot guarantee your safety,” offered the book.

“I need to do this, I can’t back down now. Where is the book?” announced Flutter Moon boldly, puffing her chest and flexing her wings.

“I believe Nightmare Moon has placed it over there,” the book stated as it highlighted another table with a milky white outline. “Ever since she and that other unicorn have come here, I have been slowly subverting their spells. I did not know the length of my endeavors, and perhaps that is why you were able to bypass the illusion that the new queen has placed.” Stepping over, Flutter Moon picked up the book and was tempted to read the new prophecy.

“Before I go, I don’t think I ever got your name? Or, do books even have names?” asked Flutter Moon as she made her way back towards the exit.

“That’s not important right now. You must get out of here. With that book, I have placed a spell on it that should allow you to bring it out of this library without alerting the queen, but my magic can only go so far. When you cross the threshold of this place, the spell will collapse. When that happens, run as fast and as far as you can,” prompted the book.

“But, I…” started Flutter Moon.

“Go!” commanded the book, pushing her with its magic halfway up the stairs with Predictions and Prophecies tucked underneath her wing. Flutter Moon quickly scaled the other half and came to the lever. She quickly brought the latch down, waited, and moved through the newly opened passage. When she did, she could hear a soft click as the entrance quickly closed behind her. “Guards! Thief!” cried a familiar voice behind her.

Chapter [9] Change of status and change of time

“That’s horrible!” Twilight thought, disgusted as Dawn Lighter flipped through Biomancer’s Guide to the Flesh. The dark unicorn sat in her chamber, reading the book, thinking of potential uses of its dark secrets.

“Perhaps, but imagine the power that an individual would hold with that? Incredible,” murmured Dawn Lighter as she turned to the next page. Time seemed to slip away as she read. She had been perusing the many books that the restricted chamber had to offer. Several weeks had passed, and still her thirst for new knowledge grew as she frequented the secret chamber until one day she chanced upon Biomancer’s Guide to the Flesh. Fascinated by the potential life application, the mare had brought it back to her own room to study and examine.

“Miss Dawn Lighter, the queen would like to have a word,” called a hooded figure in her doorway, before swishing away into the darkness. Dawn Lighter’s face grew sour, the new guard always seemed to disappear into the night before she had gotten a good look at them. Storing the thought for later, the unicorn got up and placed the book in her saddlebag. She then quickly made her way to the queen’s quarters and entered after a single knock. Finding the room to be empty, Dawn Lighter peered around until she noticed that the queen was standing on the balcony. The dark monarch was staring into the beautiful night sky, looking up to her moon.

“Ah, Dawn Lighter, I am glad you received my summons,” began Nightmare Moon, not even turning from her position and beckoning her over with a hoof. “Come, sit.” Dawn Lighter hesitantly stepped over to the queen and perched next to her.

“You called for me, my queen?” asked Dawn Lighter, perplexed by her mistress’s serene state. Nightmare Moon sighed into the night’s cool air.

“I wish for your opinion on a matter. It seems that the nobles have grown restless with my moon. Unsatisfied by its position, they demand I move it, or at least give some balance so that they may tell time. At first I was able to stave off their desires, yet their nagging has persisted to the point of halting the night court’s progression,” explained Nightmare Moon with a huff.

“And are you inclined to humor their wants? If you succumb to this, what else may they try and force upon you? You alone control the moon, my queen, it is your decision to do with it as you please,” offered Dawn Lighter after a moment of thought, gesturing to the inhabitants below. “If you think it will make the ponies happy, then by all means. Perhaps offer them their passage of time, but only through the moon can they witness it.”

“Yes, only the moon,” stated the alicorn, as she closed her eyes in bliss. “I have an idea in mind, but it requires your help in the making. Are you willing?”

“Of course, my queen, I would lay down my life for you in a heartbeat,” Dawn Lighter said, bringing a hoof to her chest.

“Very well. Link your magic with mine. Channel your power into me, and I shall direct it upwards,” commanded Nightmare Moon, lighting her horn and encasing the moon with a soft glow. Power rushed through the dark alicorn as she wavered under the complexity of the spell. The queen was impressed by Dawn Lighter’s magic, feeling its full power wash over her and into the spell. Soon, the moon began to inch across the night’s sky, sluggishly throwing off the tether that Nightmare Moon had placed on it previously. “There. That should do it.” She gasped as she completed the spell. Dawn Lighter was breathing heavily as well, as she felt the aftereffects of the powerful magic wash over her.

Leaning her head over a rail, Nightmare Moon smiled at her ponies below. She watched as they pointed in the sky, cheering and clapping their little hooves as they watched the moon move through the night. “Now onto the other reason that I have called you here,” announced Nightmare Moon, turning back to Dawn Lighter. “Since a new prophecy has befallen us, I am placing you in charge of locating and eradicating any resistance that pops up. You will have full authority of the crown behind you in your actions, and I support and endorse any decision you make. That being to recruit ponies to your side in your endeavors, by whatever means necessary. I also offer you ponies that are already loyal to our cause, as I am sure you have seen a few already.”

“I am honored, Your Highness. If you do not mind me asking, why have you now placed this upon me?” wondered Dawn Lighter.

“Because I have attempted to make strategies of my own, but must also balance the responsibilities of being a ruler. Yet, under your care, I can oversee and offer assistance when needed rather than lead the investigation myself. Through you, we can achieve peace and prosperity among my little ponies. I want you to crush this prophecy and kill any thoughts of rebellion against me,” stated Nightmare Moon coldly.

“It will be done, my queen. You can rely on me.” Dawn Lighter nodded, grinning as thoughts of the book she had read earlier came to mind. Dastardly plans began to form as she considered what she could do next.

Dawn Lighter ran different schemes and ideas through her head as she made her way towards the Canterlot Library. First she wanted to see if there were any books that were similar to the one she already had by her side. Perhaps she could advance ponykind to the point that Nightmare Moon had first dreamed of, and she wanted to find all of the knowledge that could help her in that endeavor. Next she considered her mistress’s offer of assistance from those hooded guards that she had seen. Who were they, and how useful would they be in helping her? She also pondered what the queen meant when she said to recruit ponies to her cause.

Finally reaching the library, Dawn Lighter made her way towards where the hidden room was located. She was halfway there, when a small figure blocked her way. “Please, miss, can you help my mommy?” asked a surprisingly young voice below her, as a colt no older than maybe eight or nine tugged on her fetlock. Dawn Lighter attempted to turn away, yet the foal was persistent and latched onto her hoof. “Please, miss, she’s sick and isn’t feeling well and has to carry a lot of books. Can you help her, pretty please?”

“Moon Gnar, honey, where did you go?” came a nasally call of a mare as she stepped around a corner, weakly lumbering around with a large stack of books piled on her back. “There you are, I told you not too…” The mare gulped as she saw who her son was holding, and quickly did her best to bow before Dawn Lighter. “M-my apologies, esteemed one. My colt can b-be impulsive when he is trying to help.”

“It is fine,” stated Dawn Lighter, waving her hoof to try and dislodge the colt before noticing the state of the mare. It was strange, as the grey and green-coated unicorn seemed to emit a low glow from her body. Dawn Lighter recalled that the colt had said his mother was sick, but this seemed far stranger than any disease that she could think of. “If you don’t mind me asking, what ails you?” Dawn Lighter drew closer to take a better look.

“To be honest, we don’t know. My husband and I have contracted this illness together, and have been desperately searching for any potential cure in these books,” she said, beckoning to the pack on her back. She swayed slightly and opted to sit down with her heavy load. “Oh, where are my manners. My name is Moon Blossom, and this is my son, Moon Gnar.”

“Fascinating,” muttered Dawn Lighter, as she ran a quick spell over the mare. Tapping her chin in thought, Dawn Lighter withdrew the book she had been reading earlier with her magic and flipped through a few pages. Rereading a spot that came to her mind concerning this case, she traced the text until she found where she remembered reading about something familiar to this. Closing the book with a snap, Dawn Lighter nodded her head in satisfaction.

“What is it? Did that book have an answer?” wondered Moon Blossom, leaning closer to the book.

“Perhaps, I just have one question to ask. Were you or your husband sick when you came to the renaming ceremony?” queried Dawn Lighter, placing the book back into her saddlebag.

Moon Blossom had to think for a moment before answering. “In fact, I think we were, both he and I had the common cold. But what does that have to do with anything?”

“That’s probably the answer. It’s extremely rare, but it is possible for a spell to backfire and for the bacteria in your system to disrupt its process. I don’t have time to explain the science right now, but I suggest you and your husband be checking into the Royal Hospital. I will swing by sometime and explain to the doctors what to do,” offered Dawn Lighter, about to continue on her way.

“Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you! This sickness has been such a burden on our family. We’ve been under so much stress lately. I don’t know what I would do if something horrible befell our little colts. ” Moon Blossom sighed in relief.

“You promise you’ll come?” squeaked Moon Gnar, looking hopefully at Dawn Lighter.

“Yes yes, I promise. Now move aside, I have other business to attend to,” huffed Dawn Lighter. Overjoyed, Moon Gnar rushed up and hugged her leg, before Moon Blossom ushered him away.

“Thank you!” he exclaimed, waving at her as the two departed. Shaking her head and rolling her eyes, Dawn Lighter continued on her way, promptly forgetting about the promise she just made.

Meanwhile, a certain rainbow-maned pegasus had been dozing off on the upper levels of the library. The loud snap of a book awoke her as she yawned and stretched. She smacked her lips in thirst as she looked around her surroundings before recognition dawned on her. She was supposed to be keeping watch! Smacking herself, Dasher Moon fluttered her wings as she looked around. She let out a sigh of relief as everypony else seemed to be minding their own business, and all seemed calm. Had Flutter Moon come yet? How late in the night was it? Mentally berating herself, Dasher Moon looked down and spotted Dawn Lighter walking below her. She was supposed to warn Flutter Moon if she was here! Hyperventilating and not knowing what to do, Dasher Moon froze in shock as the dark unicorn below drew closer to the entrance.

Beneath, Dawn Lighter stepped towards the classified section confidently. Future plans in mind, the dark unicorn blinked in surprise as she noticed a pegasus leaving the secret chamber. “Guards! Thief!” she cried as she galloped over to the pony with her horn sparking. Immediately two hooded sentries stepped out of the shadows and stood in between the nervous yellow pegasus, blocking off her escape.

Flutter Moon jumped in surprise and looked about in panic for any way to flee. Dawn Lighter stepped closer and scrunched her face in disappointment at the timid mare as she drew closer. “Who are you, and why are you here? Wait, I know you…” Dawn Lighter said as recognition flashed over her features. “Flitter? No... Flutter Moon, was it?”

“Erm, I just stumbled upon it and was curious where it led,” offered Flutter Moon weakly, her worst nightmare playing in front of her as Dawn Lighter scowled.

“And you just happened to pick up a certain book, say Predictions and Prophecies, aye?” Dawn Lighter growled as she grasped the book that had been tucked underneath Flutter Moon’s wing. “Do you have anything to defend yourself?” Suddenly a rainbow swirl landed before the group, and the pegasus protectively flexed her wings in front of Flutter Moon.

“She didn’t do anything wrong!” exclaimed Dasher Moon in defense. “I pushed her to explore the room when I discovered it, and was too cowardly to do it myself. So I asked Flutter Moon to take a look instead.”

“I highly doubt that,” stated Dawn Lighter, narrowing her eyes and looming over the cyan pegasus. Turning to Flutter Moon, she pondered what needed to happen next. “Did you read anything in that book?”

“N-no,” mumbled Flutter Moon, shaking her head vigorously. The dark unicorn nodded, realizing the timid pegasus was telling the truth. “Very well. Take these two away. I will punish them later,” Dawn Lighter finished, beckoning the two guards to escort their prisoners away.

Chapter [10] Trial of the Butterfly

Flutter Moon was quietly escorted to a holding cell. It was a small room with a simple metal bed and a tiny sheet of a mattress. A toilet in the corner, and a mirror against a wall facing towards the door. Shuffling over to the glass, Flutter Moon gazed into it. Her reflection stared back at her, haggard and fretful. It seemed like everything was falling apart. How long would she have to wait here? Should she tell the truth? How much of it? Would all of her friends be considered traitors?

With those thoughts eating away at Flutter Moon, she awkwardly paced around her cell. Opting to lie down on the bed, she stared at the designless ceiling. After what felt like an eternity, she finally heard the telltale sound of the lock tumbler sliding open. Stretching her legs, she looked over to the pony that entered and immediately shied from her gaze. Closing her eyes, she breathed in and out a few times to steady herself before opening them again. Facing her fears, Flutter Moon hesitantly stepped over to the waiting Dawn Lighter.

“So, you were found to be in the possession of the book of Predictions and Prophecies. Did you read any contents of the book?” asked Dawn Lighter coldy, not a hint of emotion in her words as she squinted at the squirming pegasus.

“No. I did not,” stated Flutter Moon, attempting to keep her voice steady.

“What were you going to do with the book? Why did you bring it out with you?” continued Dawn Lighter.

“Well… I remembered you had talked about--Er, the old you, that is, about the book before, and was curious about it now. I wanted to read it for myself, so that was why I brought it with me…” answered Flutter Moon diligently. Dawn Lighter’s face twitched at the mention of her past self. She scowled, staring down at the yellow mare.

“And that was all that you were doing there? How did you discover the place?” Dawn Lighter pressed on.

“I actually discovered it by accident.” Flutter Moon blushed. “I was perusing the sections when I stumbled upon it. Curious, I ventured further until I came across the bigger room. There I found the book lying on a table.”

“I am surprised you were able to get as far as you did and boldly chose to go down a place you presumably had no knowledge of in the first place. Why is that?” wondered Dawn Lighter, raising an eyebrow.

“I don’t know, I was just curious, I guess?” Flutter Moon shrugged, feeling her heart rate increase.

“Quite interesting indeed. Perhaps your compatriot will be as forthcoming as you are,” concluded Dawn Lighter, before leaving the room.

Dasher Moon glared at the door, not moving as she waited for Dawn Lighter to come. She was mentally kicking herself at her laziness and was desperately trying to think of a way out of their situation. Stupid Dasher Moon. You should have stayed more attentive, especially for Fluter Moon! Growling to herself, she tried to run scenarios in her head of what she wanted to say. That all went into shambles when Dawn Lighter strode in confidently.

“Is Flutter Moon alright?” sputtered the cyan pegasus.

“I will be the one who is asking questions here, not you. Tell me, why were you and Flutter Moon at the library today?” asked Dawn Lighter, looming over her.

“Well… Um…” Dasher Moon blanched. “I discovered the entrance, and Flutter Moon was with me, so I asked her to take a look while I watched for anypony to notice.”

You discovered it? Interesting. And how come you weren’t on the same floor as her when I found her leaving?” stated Dawn Lighter.

“I, uh… I wanted to get a better view! A higher vantage point to see if anypony was coming! Yeah,” declared Dasher Moon, rubbing her hooves.

“Well, it seems that your compatriot got a little too curious when it came to stealing that book. The law will decide the punishment for your crimes against the kingdom.”

“Crimes?! We haven’t broken any laws!” exclaimed Dasher Moon.

“The decision will be up to us. A court has been assembled for you two and will proceed in three hours. You and your compatriot will talk with a public interest lawyer beforehoof and establish your case,” finished Dawn Lighter before turning and leaving.

A few minutes later, Dasher Moon was moved into another room where she saw Flutter Moon talking with another pony. She quickly went over and hugged the shy pegasus. “Are you alright?” she asked.

“I am fine. Though things aren’t looking good for me,” mumbled Flutter Moon dejectedly.

“She’s right, Dawn Lighter gave me a list of the laws that you broke in your escapades,” stated the lawyer mare, indicating a scroll with her hoof.

“Is there anything we can do to get out of this? And are you with the…?” wondered Dasher Moon suspicion in her tone.

“Hello, my name is Frothic Moon. I am the lawyer assigned to assist the two of you in this case. Your case, Dasher Moon, will be easier for me to clear, since you haven’t done anything wrong. I can plead that you didn’t plan on doing anything and were simply curious. Flutter moon, on the other hoof, I am very worried about you,” started the unicorn mare, shaking each of their hooves. “She’s been charged with breaking and entering, stealing national security, criminal and specific intent, intentional conduct, and a few more terms that you probably won’t know or understand.”

“What are we planning on doing? You are helping us, right? asserted Dasher Moon.

“I am doing my best, but this is a pretty open-and-shut case. I can potentially worm you out of this, Dasher Moon, but I don’t think I can do anything for you, Flutter Moon.” Frothic Moon sighed.

“Should I immediately plead guilty to everything? I could accept whatever my sentence is,” proposed Flutter Moon.

“I wouldn’t recommend that. I can try my best to dismiss as many charges as possible, before you plead to anything,” countered Frothic Moon. “That's the only possibility I can offer you for now, unless by some miracle the queen presents something else.”

“Thank you so much for all that you have done for us,” murmured Flutter Moon graciously, her mind a bit worried at what the court had planned.

“I will go over the details of the court hearing and presentation, since most ponies don’t have much knowledge of the proceedings of the high court,” began Frothic Moon.

As the court was called into session, Flutter Moon could feel all eyes on her. Hundreds of ponies she didn’t recognize were staring at her. She retreated into her mane with a quiet eep. Some seemed sympathetic, while others were indifferent to her case. Flutter Moon turned back to face the judge podium. There, Queen Nightmare Moon sat, overlooking the event.

The whole process was more of a blur to Flutter Moon. Dawn Lighter would read the charges, Frothic Moon would do her best to try and gain some ground on her part, but every accusation was harder and harder to dismantle. When finally, the verdict was held. “All rise to hear the judgement of Flutter Moon,” commanded Nightmare Moon. As everyone rose, fear stabbed at Flutter Moon’s heart as she waited for the conviction. “Flutter Moon, I find you guilty with treason against the crown, possession of national security, and the intent of sharing said knowledge with others. Because of your crimes, I sentence you to a swift and painless death,” declared the queen. The crowd mumbled with surprise and fear, yet quickly quieted with a commanding stomp from the dark alicorn’s hoof.

“As for Dasher Moon, who was also at the scene of the crime," Nightmare Moon continued. "She is found guilty. Though she was not in possession of any illegal material, she attempted to abet the accused, lying in an attempt to convince the accuser. She also conspired with Flutter Moon and persuaded her to enter the restricted section. Dasher Moon will not suffer the same fate as Flutter Moon. Instead, she shall be exiled from Canterlot, stripped of her lunar heritage, and never to set hoof in this city again. This is my final verdict for both. Case closed.”

Chapter [11] The Promise

Dasher Moon hated how perfect it was. It was a crisp and clear night, the light of the moon illuminating the procession as they made their way to the prepared clearing. She also hated how calm everything was. Her acquaintances were there, with saddened expressions, along with a few other observers that she didn’t recognize. Flutter Moon was brought into view. It was obvious that she had been crying. Her mane was frazzled and unkempt, and her wings drooped low to the ground. The two guards that had escorted her stood stiffly at attention in their designated spots.

Then everyone’s attention was drawn to Nightmare Moon, as she casually made her way to Flutter Moon’s position. Dasher Moon hated how calm the queen looked, and turned away in disgust. “My loyal subjects! Is this not another glorious night? What a wonderful evening to cement a powerful reminder to my little ponies. Let everypony see that I will not hesitate to exact judgement on those that wish to oppose me,” declared Nightmare Moon, smiling at the assembled ponies and waving a hoof in dismission to the guards. “Though as your benevolent queen, I have decided to make an offer to any who would like to accept. Should there be anyone who wishes to bear Flutter Moon’s punishment, they shall step forward and take her place instead.

The audience mumbled, shocked by the offer, yet no one raised a hoof. Dasher Moon was surprised that none of her so-called “friends” made any objection, and she looked at each of them in turn. Not a single one of them lifted their eyes to meet her gaze. A part of her wished that the resistance would swoop in, rescuing her and Flutter Moon from this nightmare and whisk them away to freedom. Her hopes were dashed when no candidate stepped forward to save the shy pegasus. “Very well. Flutter Moon, under the Last Act Law, you have the ability for one final request. Speak now, or forever hold your peace.

“Um… Can I give Dasher Moon one last hug?” whispered Flutter Moon, breathing shakily.

“Very well, embrace, then let us move on,” stated Nightmare Moon.

Dasher Moon quickly went to Flutter Moon’s side and spoke with her. “I am so sorry, Flutter Moon, I… I don’t know what to say,” she choked out, holding back her tears.

“Thank you, Dasher, and I am sorry too. I should never have done it. Can I ask you to do something for me?” Flutter Moon asked, blinking as fresh tears fell from her eyes.

“Anything, anything at all, Flutter Moon,” said Dasher Moon, hugging her close.

“I want you to go to my animals and do your best to take care of them when I am gone. And I want you to take one of my feathers. Let it be a memento of the fun we had and the memories we made together. Will you do that for me?” asked Flutter Moon.

“Of course, of course,” Dasher Moon mumbled through the numerous emotions fighting for attention in her mind. She hugged her friend tighter, before hesitantly reaching out to the outstretched wing. Making sure she didn’t hurt her friend in the process, she removed the feather.

“Alright, enough of that. It is time,” Nightmare Moon said, separating the two with a wing. “Goodbye, Flutter Moon.” Dasher Moon gulped, as she was escorted away. Returning to her place, Dasher Moon sniffled before averting her gaze. Closing her eyes, she waited for the dreaded moment to happen. With a sudden sickening woosh of air, the deed was done. “Your sacrifice will not go to waste, Flutter Moon; I swear upon it,” she muttered.

“Take the body away. Now then, as for you, Dasher Moon. You shall be stripped of your status as a child of the Moon. From now on, you will only be known as ‘Dasher’ and shall never again step hoof into this city or my castle under order of arrest. Do you recognize these terms?” announced Nightmare Moon, wiping away some blood that had clung to her shoulder.

“I do,” replied Dasher simply, cracking her eyes open to look at the queen.

“Then I strip you of these titles and banish you from this city. You have one night cycle to collect your belongings and leave,” the dark alicorn declared. “Those here take note. This case is closed.”

Dasher was fruitlessly packing away her belongings in the hotel that she had rented. She went through the motions, tossing her belongings into her bags before bringing the feather out one last time. The yellow color seemed amplified by the candlelight. A final memento of her friend. The weight of grief that her best friend was gone began to sink in. Flutter Moon was dead.

Her regrets weighed heavy on her heart. It was paradoxical how much she missed her friend’s presence now that she was truly gone. No longer would she hear soft-spoken replies or quiet laughs. Gone was the tender and kind nature of Flutter Moon. Memories of the anger she had felt surfaced in her mind, and regret filled her heart. She sniffled and rubbed her eyes with a fetlock. “Oh, Flutter Moon, what have I done. I could have saved you. I should have taken your place. How am I going to live with myself?” she mumbled, fresh tears coming to her eyes.

A gentle knock came from the door, and Dasher, wiping away snot and tears, went to see who it was. “Where were you!?” she cried angrily, souring at the presence of her guest.

“I am sorry, but we couldn’t risk doing anything to help you. It’s already dangerous for me to be speaking with you and--” began Moon Melody.

“I don’t care, you betrayed us! You didn’t even bother to try to get Flutter Moon free! I am done, I don’t want to be a part of whatever this is anymore.” Dasher growled, turning away from the pink alicorn in her doorway. Moon Melody sighed, but nodded.

“I am sorry too. But if you ever change your mind…” she proposed.

“Go away, I… I need to work through this,” said Dasher, waiting for Moon Melody to leave. The cyan pegasus returned to looking at the feather. She then gently placed it in a box, which she carefully stowed in her saddlebag. “I will keep you with me forever, Flutter Moon, till the end of time.”

Epilogue: To End a Story and One to Come

“Well then, this should be a good finishing spot to end our story for tonight. I believe it is getting late, and I would hate to keep you two up past your bedtime,” stated the stallion.

“But, but, you aren’t done with the story yet! This is just a cliffhanger!” exclaimed Orin, pouting.

“Yeah!” added Ava, annoyed. “What happens next with Dasher? Does she rejoin the resistance? When do you come into the story? This can’t be it!”

“Ah well, we will pick up the story tomorrow. There is still much more to come, but for now we must take a break. I am glad your mother brought us food, since you two were so engrossed in my tale and wouldn’t budge for anything.” He chuckled, rising from his seated position and stretching his aching limbs.

“It isn’t even that late! You still have time to tell us more,” argued Orin, moving over to check a nearby window.

“Oh, but if I didn’t stop now, the two of you would ever be able to fall asleep,” countered the old unicorn and smiled.

It was at that time that their mother entered the room. “What’s this I hear? Is the story already over? I would have thought you would stay up all night telling them,” she remarked, smiling fondly.

“I didn’t say all of it, of course. Just ended with a good spot.” The stallion winked.

“Was it right after Flutter Moon’s death? I hated when you stopped there when I was just a filly. Though you would drive me crazy whenever you chose to end at any place, really.” She giggled.

“But Mo-om! We want to hear what happens next!” grumbled Orin.

“And you will, honey, later. Trust me, your grandpa does not disappoint. Right now, however, it is time to get ready for bed. Be thankful that I let you stay up this late,” the mare remarked with a tsk, nuzzling the two.

“But what if I can’t fall asleep?” wondered Ava weakly.

“Oh, you will. Why not dream up all the fun adventures you could have?” she stated. “And the sooner you fall asleep, the faster tomorrow will be.”

“But what if we…” began Orin before letting out a big yawn, which caused his sister to do likewise. The adults shared a knowing look and a chuckle as they both picked up the quickly tiring forms of the foals. The two carried them on their backs and dropped them off into their beds.

“Grandpa,” asked Ava after she was tucked in by the older unicorn. “Will you tell us the rest of the story tomorrow?”

“Of course, Ava,” said the stallion softly.

“Do you promise?” she continued, smiling.

“I promise, now get some sleep. That was one interesting story, aye? Try not to stay up too long thinking about it,” he whispered, nuzzling her cheek before leaving.

“So, you ended with Flutter Moon and the feather, I assume?” asked the mare.

“Of course, Velvet. That was your favorite spot to stop anyway. You always needed a momentary break to feel for the character,” reasoned the old unicorn.

“I know, but I also knew what was to come. They, however, are experiencing all this for the first time. You might shatter how they see the world after this,” proposed Velvet.

“Perhaps, but maybe that is a good thing. Sometimes ponies need to grow up. I certainly had to grow up fast when I was their age. Life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows.” He sighed.

“I know that, but are they ready for everything? Like your scars for instance. How you got them was pretty graphic. I know that when you finally told me, I had nightmares for weeks,” Velvet cautioned.

“I have already thought about this story and a way to eclipse that out. I’ll water it down and cut the more intense parts. Just like for you, I will keep the events vague and watered down enough that it will be sufficient to quench their curiosity,” the unicorn explained.

“How will you go about that? I didn’t believe you when you said you ‘fell down’ and kept them.” She huffed, rolling her eyes at the memory.

“I know, I know, that was a pretty bad way of explaining it on my part, but you were young, and I didn’t want to scare you. My past was a dark and awful time to live in, you know,” he added. “Now, I seem to recall that it’s your bedtime as well. Remember when you used to doze off when I told you my stories?”

“How could I forget; your voice was the only thing that lulled me asleep,” Velvet said, rubbing up against her father.

“Ah, those were the days; you were so cute when you fell asleep. Your mother would throw a fit if you stayed past midnight.” He chuckled.

“She always did worry about us. She was so pure,” she stated.

“And I was so dark. She helped me get out of that darkness. It’s why I married her,”

“Yeah, I miss her songs. She had the most angelic voice, both of you are forever ingrained in my memory.”

“Yeah, I miss her too. I am getting old, Velvet. I’ve passed a normal unicorn’s lifespan twice now. And I can feel my mind slipping. That’s why I love telling stories, it helps exercise it,” he confessed.

“Yeah, it’s crazy to think how long ago all that was. Come on, you need your sleep too. I know you might be a legendary figure, but even legends need to sleep. Maybe I can join the foals as you tell us the story tomorrow,” Velvet offered.

“That’s a great idea. It’s been a while since I’ve gotten the chance to tell you a story. Good night, my little Velvet,” the old unicorn whispered, drawing his daughter closer and kissing her forehead.

“Good night, Dad, sweet dreams,” giggled Velvet, hugging her father and slipping off to her room.
