Rarity's search for the captured Rainbow Dash has brought her to the ancient grave-city of Jannah. With a weary but willing heart, she must find a way through the city's many perils to reach the mare she loves. But Jannah is abandoned for a reason. Nameless horrors stalk it's streets at night, and the city itself is infested by the Noise, a chaotic siren call that lures ponies to their death on the cobblestones. A mad Zebra shaman named D'Jalin and his mercenary band try to unlock the power of a strange artifact at the city's center, and Rainbow may be their key to bringing it to life. Celestia will not risk letting free the Evil which does not sleep, and her friends are far behind. Rarity has only her gun and her own fierce determination now, in the whitewashed tombs of Jannah.

don't forget "Alternate universe" :twilightoops:
Seriously, she got guns. That's not going to be invented in equestria by the first :rainbowlaugh:

Don't ask me why, but I pictured the abandoned city as Minas Tirith O.o

1835963 Yes, they do. It took us almost a millenia to fully develop the firearms (only counting europe), and that was a milenia filled with armed conflict.
I REALLY don't think they would have invented weapons as brutal as guns in peace time. Also, they don't have cars (i don't count the cider squezy6000 as a car).

Anyway, can't wait to read it

1835964 Excellent. You should.

1835979 You're quite right! In Songverse Equestria, guns aren't a pony thing. It's a Griffon blunderbuss. Griffons are warlike and beat the crap outta each other. Ponies end up with guns. Distasteful things.

1836216
Star Wars reference!
And I just noticed the # of words is sequential. That is really cool, at least to me.

I personally liked the inclusion of rudimentary guns, it gave the story a bit of an "exotic" feel compared to most MLP fanfics, in my opinion.

1835964 YES. I do as well. Although a bit "easternized." ... I don't even think that's a word. :ajsleepy:

1838198

I think it's a good thing to have one person dedicated to writing Raridash so well.

It's a ship that really doesn't always get the love it deserves, and IMO it deserves quite a bit.

1835960
"I need something real fast like a bullet, to keep up with me":rainbowwild:

And besides, I'm sure it's just a, uh, fashion gun or something, right Cyne? :trixieshiftleft::trixieshiftright:

Oh, yes, I like this. This gets a favourite to track rather than a read it later.

1838198 hehehehehehheheh You made me chuckle. I know it's not. I'm actually halfway doing something with another ship now (it's even straight)! And the next and last Songverse story after this one will be a long way off. What pairing would you like next? :3

1838527 ha, no, it's basically a sawed-off shotgun. :P But I do imagine that it's a beautiful weapon, or once was. Rarity, I think (like myself) can appreciate fine craftmanship. :P

1839338 :D TGPNiC's approval is best approval. I kind of worried she didn't seem concerned enough, strangely.

1835960
They developed fireworks. Pinkie also has a canon (but okay admittedly that's probably not the best way to frame a logical work) but still. The progression development is already in place, and it doesn't necessarily have to be ponies!

Hmm... I enjoy this story so far. Though I get the feeling I should go back and read the other stuff that came before it. Still, I really enjoy the sense of atmosphere and the attention to non-visual details. Rarity is a great character to put in this kind of peril. :raritycry:

Rummaging in the saddlebag, she found her tarp and tried to dry it off.

Just hope that your shells aren't wets...

1868514 that would be completely unprecedented in the literature I enjoy wouldn't it? And unfortunate.

Wouldn't it be.

:3

ha

1868532
Yes, nowhere before has anything like that happened. Certainly not in the literary circles you participate in.

I don't know how you managed 11 downvotes for this story. I like it! I simply must have more. :raritystarry:

1872187 It may sound arrogant but I don't either! I wish one of them would have told me... I'd love to hear why.

1872391 You won't unfortunately. That's why whenever someone actually tells me they downvoted and explains why, I am sure to tell them how much an actual explanation means to me. Then again, some just could be jerks who don't like a certain pairing or shipping in general.

I swear, I'll get around to starting it. She'll want one, and make them start building it too.

And no, Rarity was not ready to kill with her heart.

Well gee, 50% dislikes and no actually comments as to why. Now I want to read this just because that seems unfair.

1921567 I think it's because I write a LOT of this pairing (or did). This was kind of the capstone of me releasing three fics in rapid succession. Perhaps that is why.

But you should read because look it's Rarity. See? And adventure. Kind of. Sort of.

Mad God King eh? Did D'Jalin steal that title from Oryx, or did he actually make it for himself...
(Curse me and my references to Realm of the Mad God...)

1922945 Who wrote/made that? I know that name.

I got the title in the long run from Raymond E. Feist! I read part of a book with a similar title "Mad Queen" "Mad Gods" something or other, and the idea of it festered in my head. D'Jalin is the same Zebra that's in my collection "Where Mad Gods Dance" but this is an alternate universe

Realm of the Mad God is a bullet-hell top down roguelike RPG.Made by Wild Shadow, but some other company bought it. FiMFiction doesn't have any RotMG crossovers as far as I know . The Mad God is Oryx, he is also the hardest boss in the game. Even more so if you choose to fight him in his Wine Cellar after all the players kill him once. It's frustrating at most, given there is permadeath, and only eight inventory slots, excluding the mana potion, health potion, and equipment slots. Oh, and did I mention there are so many ways to die, it's not even funny?
Go ahead and look it up on Steam or Kongregate if you want to try it. It's actually a great game if you aren't an incarnation of Leeroy Jenkins( Which I sure of hell am)

Well, hope to god you don't fight a Cube God if you aren't a ranged type class. Shotgun and Spread type attacks are a melee character's bane.

It was an empty gesture, really. A quick inventory had uncovered a severe lack of ammunition for the weapon, with only two more shells surviving the water. But she couldn’t bear to keep it even as a tool to bluff with. It scared her.

Point of order, if it is a blunderbuss, it is a muzzleloader and thus does not take shells. A better term would be charges or cartridges.

1930553 Mostly I called it a blunderbuss because of the shape, where it fans out. I might go back and rename it a "scattergun"....

but thankya, I shall change that later.

1932480
Blunderbuss' have the bell shaped muzzle to ease loading rather than making the shot scatter. I pointed out shell is the wrong term because it implies something like a modern shotgun. Unless you mean she was carrying fused explosive shells:scootangel:
Sorry if I'm nitpicking, it is a land of magical ponies, so the exact type of guns used is likely a matter of style over substance, and a Blunderbuss has got style is spades.
EDIT: the flare was intended to aid scatter, but largely did not.
And because I forgot to say this before, love this addition to the songverse.

From what little I know of Blunderbusses, they are capable of firing pretty much anything as long as it fits inside the barrel. It ain't accurate, but it is a wonderful shotgun in the right circumstances.... Just as long as you keep the powder dry.
Speaking of which, I am surprised that you didn't take that into account. Wet powder is completely useless once it becomes damp.

2078881 I know it is, actually. Most of her ammunition got wet. She had a few shells left dry.

Well then...
I had my suspicions, but that threw me for a loop!
Again, I'm sorry, man.

~ .13% incident rate.

she’d know.She’d know

cannot waitto get

hooves in my memories with

Though this one might just be stylistic... (which would bring the rate down to .09% Which is incredible.)

she talked was too

2094466 Looooop. It was unplanned.

Hurrah! I shall fix that.

And it's okies

Ah, I figured everything was working out too well. "Dash" was a little too flippant. Come on, your love just traveled a zillion miles through ghost infested ruins and whatnot to rescue you, has now earned a dashing eye scar, and there's barely any reaction? I dunno why this has downvotes - it certainly doesn't deserve them, but then I suppose there are always the people who simply downvote based on shipping preferences or by seeing that guns are present without reading on to see how they're actually used. Anywho, I've quite enjoyed this so far and can't wait to find out how it ends :pinkiehappy:

2096355 :D

Funny fact, the original scene was so bland that I just said what you just said and sat there and was like

...That's not Dash.

And then I grinned. >:3

I'm glad you enjoy it. I think mostly it's from shipping.

Finally got the chance to read this and the previous chapter. I gotta say, I am truly impressed, Cynewulf. This is becoming one of my favorite stories. :ajsmug:

No, but it helps. Great heart will not be denied.
That was literally the stupidest line she’d ever heard.

Oh, you. :duck:

I'm looking forward to the conclusion! Placing a doppelganger in the cell was surprisingly intelligent for a villain. Or, even better, if it was a complete mental reprogramming. But I doubt D'Jalin is that powerful. I did figure out about the doppelganger-Rainbow Dash early on, but I can't complain.

Keep it up, Cynewulf. You rock!

2104221 I laughed pretty hard writing that. Because, in that situation, she would totally think that. I think it's true, but she probably wouldn't. :3

Finally got around to reading more of this. Lol. Been distracted by a very long story and proofreading and work. But man, I love your writing. I forgot how much. And there aren't enough Rarity stories on this site. Rarity is amazing.

2168944 She is! I'm glad you like this, though I've kind of been meh about it...

Jannah will appear again, by the way, perhaps

2169019
I think your feeling comes through in your writing a bit. Some scenes you rush a bit through and I think "wait, what's going on right now?" But better some slightly confusing scenes of your writing than a lot of the proofreading I've been doing over the past month or so. Lol. And some other stuff. Clicking things that are featured on the front page doesn't always work out so well, does it? And then there's this story, which has a ridiculous amount of dislikes for no reason. I actually recently read a Macintosh/Rarity that had a bunch of dislikes just for the pairing, too. So it's not just about the lesbian relationships. Sigh. Wish there was a way to stamp out a bunch of that crap. Or at least counter it with people not so stingy with their upvotes. That's the problem, I guess. That people are liberal with the downvotes, but refuse to give upvotes to anything but "the best" stories on the site. And then you have all those crazy Mary Sue retellings of the first epsiodes and self-inserts that get hundreds of upvotes because some people wouldn't know good writing if it hit them in the face.

Anyway, what was my point? I will never write a story with any pairing in it. That was my point, wasn't it? :raritywink:
Oh wait, but I totally have that humanised pony story I'm writing. People like to downvote those without reading them, too...

I feel like I'm missing something here, is there a preceding fic that explains how RD was captured? Been following the 'Songverse', mostly for the Raridash shipping, and came across this. I know I'm a little late to the party here, but is this still apart of the storyline from 'Lilies of the fields' and 'Where the Sun is Silent' or have I somehow mixed up storylines?

2209149 It's said in the first three somewhere--Twilight and RD went West kind of just on a mission of exploration, science, and diplomacy. RD was sort of supposed to keep Twilight safe, and obviously that didn't work out. They were ambushed by mercenaries working for D'Jalin, who is explained at length (he's a crazy Zebra shaman) and Twilight is left for dead. They take Rainbow with them into Jannah
