When you've reached the point of insanity, there's no going back, not really. Even when everyone else has forgotten, and you've convinced yourself that you can fit back into the world again, all it takes is one thing to make everything collapse around you.

Lyra tried to convince everyone she saw humans in the Everfree Forest. Once they grew tired of her, and started calling her insane, she stopped. And just as she starts to believe she's passed that point in her life, the river she frequently visits gives her a gift that makes her rethink everything she knows.

Author's Notes:
Woo! First One-Shot. This was pretty fun. Dark and moody description, pretty nice. Got a nifty little emo-looking photoshopped picture there, that's a nice touch. It's symbolic. Symbolic of what? Read the story to find out! (Oh, now you have to.)

Well, I'm not too familiar with the fanon about Lyra and her knowledge about humans, so I made up a lot of it for the purpose of this story. If something doesn't fit with what the community at large agrees on, I'm sorry, kind of. It's all fiction anyway.

I don't write shipping stories, but for all of you that are crazy about it, I left some room open for interpretation about weather L+BB were in a relationship. Honestly, I don't care, and I don't think it has any impact on the story, so I left it out. But I didn't put in anything that said they weren't. So there.

Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe, if you couldn't tell.

That's about it, I think.

Is it a posobility thare could be more ? Like someponyelse falling through a loop to?

Maybe that's an idea you should explore yourself, by writing a fan fiction about my fan fiction.
The level of meta would be at just the right level to cause a rift in the fanfiction space time continuum.
You and me buddy.
We can do this.

Fuck, that's creepy!

Maybe I'm dumb, but I don't follow what happened in the story.

They lobotomized Bon-Bon? this is a very peculiar story...

You just made my favorite comment ever.

This story's a loop.

Lovely. Reminds me of Shuttle Island.

Well! How odd that Bon Bon was the one to get lobotomized!

For the readers unfamiliar with such things, the metal item Lyra discovered early in the story appears to be a trans-orbital lobotomy pick.

3153973 Well this is certainly an interesting comment to read as you glance over the story.:rainbowderp:

I was incorrect. The instrument is called an orbitoclast.

Damn, that ending was something. I really liked the whole "fry my brain and ice pick into my eye" foreshadowing as well. I'm so glad lobotomies aren't the go to cure for everything, nowadays. :ajbemused:

Wait. How is this conversion bureau?

3619597 It's in the Conversion Bureaus folder of the Humans are superior group

3619607

Well, I'm not a part of that group, so I'm not sure.

3706056 I thought only the author could add books to different groups...well whatever. Guess it doesn't change anything.

Not at all what I was expecting but that's a good thing sometimes. It was definitely a dark and terrible ending but maybe a little confusing. Though after a little research I know what went down cool job including Dr. Freeman and mentioning Kennedy. A darkly interesting story nice job :ajsmug:

This is the only dark/horror fan fic that has legitimately left me spooked.
It's absolute perfection.

Nice, i like how you set it in 1961.

How do i know that? Answer: Newspaper headline, "JFK WINS ELECTION"

oh wait...

dang it.

Bravo. I was totally lost on the metal object until the JFK headline. Then I remembered Rosemary, and that Dr. Freeman was the very real doctor who developed the transorbital lobotomy.

It then went from creepy to crawling terror. Good job.

I’m Dr. Freeman.

Get that man a crowbar.

Have you ever considered submitting this story to Equestria Daily? You can find out how to do so here.

No, but I guess I'll look into that now.

This gets that more horrific after a second reading. You really build the reader's feelings for Lyra and Bon Bon before tearing all hope away.

This kind of gave me an idea for a story of my own sort of a sequel/story of it's own. When it's out you should give it a look and I'll be sure to give you and your story credit for the inspiration

Reminds me of the Sucker Punch movie.

I....uhh....holy fuck this reminds me of the game Dear Ester.......if I weren't already scared from watching and reading a few other thousand fics then this would be the top of my psychological horror bin
