Turmoil went crashing through Spike’s system at an alarming speed as Rarity’s words dropped on him like a sledgehammer.
You know this isn’t the end of the world right?
.................It’s over.
Hm?
It’s over. My purpose in life is over. What do I have to live for now that the one I love does not love me in the same way?
Give her a chance to explain.
Give her a chance?! I gave her a big enough chance coming over here in the first place! How could you expect me to do that again? What possible reason could you give me to trust her again?!
...........Because you love her, and you and I both know that you cannot do anything else. It goes against your nature, and great love such as yours is incapable of doing anything else but persevering.
...I know...It just...hurts.
********************************************************************************************************
Look at him. He is crushed. What have I done? This is the worst possible thing ever!
You told him the truth, that is what you have done. The truth is never easy to hear, and even harder to speak, but it is for the good of all involved if the truth is spoken.
The truth. What could you possibly know about the truth? The truth is he probably hates me now.
I know quite a lot about truth, and so do you. You know that this is the kindest service you could have done. Speaking of truth, it is about time he was told the truth behind your actions, both today, and the last ten years!
How can I tell him that, without building his hopes up again? If I tell him how I feel, that will only get him thinking that he has a chance with me.
Are you saying he does not?
Well...no, but that does not mean I want to rush into anything either. That will only hurt both of us in the long run, and I owe it to both myself and Spike that I do this the right way.
You have a lot of work to do, but you have just taken the greatest step in the right direction. A relationship has to be built on truth and communication, and you have shown that you are more than able to use both. Now, I believe you have kept your dragon waiting long enough. Not very ladylike to keep your dragon waiting, hmmmm?
“Spike?”
“Yes Rarity?”
“Would you be willing to listen to me, while I try to explain some things?”
“.....Sure.”
“I want to explain why I never took your feelings for me to heart, and ultimately took you and what you have done for me for granted.”
Spike’s face twisted at those words. “So, you admit that everything I did, and the love that I had for you, and still do, you just took that all and just used me?!
Rarity cringed a little. Remember, truth and communication.
“Yes, and you have my deepest apologies. I haven’t been honest with you, and I am just now understanding how much I have hurt you.”
Spike’s face twisted even more. “You think you know how much you hurt me? You don’t have a clue. How could you possibly know how I feel? After I saved you from Shimmering Sight, I was sure that you would see just how much I cared for you. But no, from there, you got with somepony that stole from you, almost causing you to lose your shop. After that, it was another stallion that was cheating on you with FIVE other mares. Who was there, each and every time, to pick up the pieces of your heart? ME! It was always me that you turned to. Me, who was always there to help you. Me, who never once hurt you. And you have the gall to sit there and tell me you understand how I feel!? How could you, when you have never been treated in this way?
Rarity sighed. This isn’t going to be easy.
“Spike, I DO understand. All those stallions? The way they treated me, is the same way that I treated you. That is why I can understand how you feel.”
Spike sighed and rubbed his temples with his claws.“So, let me get this straight. You say you can understand how I feel, simply because you were treated badly in your relationships?”
“Yes.”
“That is a bunch of crap, and you know it.” Spike glared at Rarity.
“I have loved you since the day that I first saw you. At first, it was simply a physical attraction. But as I spent more and more of my time with you, my crush bloomed into real love. Not love as those stallions claimed to have for you, but love that saw you for you, the good and the bad.” Spike said, looking into her blue eyes. “I saw how creative and perceptive you are, as well as how caring you are. As much as you like high society, you are different from the snobs in Canterlot. You truly see ponies for who they are, and that is why I love you as much as I do. You see things for what they are, no matter who or what.” He looked away slightly, claw clenching. “Yet, and YET, you seem to have failed in that with me. Do not sit there and compare the shallowness of the so called feelings that you had for those stallions to the love I have for you. You really have no clue, and the only thing keeping me here is the fact that I love you. And lets not forget, you just told me that you cannot return my feelings. What in the name of Celestia is up with that?!”
“Spike, right there is the reason that I cannot return your feelings. I have hurt you, badly. Do you honestly think that the best thing for either of us would be to rush right into a committed relationship, when neither of us are in a position to be in a healthy one? That is the mistake I made time and time again with the stallions I was with. They were not good for me, but I wanted to be with them anyways.” She looked down at her hooves. “I do not want to make the same mistake with you. I need to take the time to learn what it means to be in a healthy relationship, and you need to make sure that I am truly the one you want to be with be with. I love you Spike, so I want to make sure that we are both ready when, and if, we are ever together.”
“Okay, I get that. But that does not explain why you never took me and what I feel for you seriously.”
Rarity hesitated. “Because I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what? ME?!” Spike’s eyes widened at this, smoke starting to come out of his nostrils.
“Not you Spike. Never you. You are the kindest, and the most gentle individual I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. What I was afraid of was what your love represented.”
“Which is?”
Rarity leaned forward and put of hoof on Spike’s arm. “Truth. Sincerity. Genuine attraction. I have never known these things before, and I did not know how to respond to them, so I treated you, and your love like it was something other than what it is. And for that Spike, I am so very sorry. Can you ever forgive me?”
“Y’know, I can see why you said that it would be best to wait. I honestly don’t know I feel right now. I do forgive you Rarity, but you are right. We both need time, time to heal and to grow. That being said, where does that leave us now?”
“Well, at the starting point. We both have things we need to learn, and now it is up to us to learn them. I love you Spike. Please, know that much.”
Spike smiled a small, yet genuine smile at Rarity. “Had you told me that yesterday, I would never have believed you. After all this though, I can readily accept that. I love you too Rarity.”
The two of them leaned forward and shared a small hug. Spike got up, walked to the door, turned, and said “Rarity? Thank you.”
“Thank you too Spike, for listening to me, and for forgiving me.”
“See ya later?”
“Most certainly.”
Spike walked out the door, his heart much lighter than it had been in years.
I can relate with Rarity. I once turned down a girl asking me out that I had a crush on because I thought I wasn't ready for a relationship and needed to grow up a little more. I am curious in what role Fluttershy will play in this story since she's in the character list of this story. Possibly to teach kindness and sincerity to Rarity?
1911293 Actually, she will be helping Spike.
Nice, very nice I will admit those are deep reasons. I can also admit I didn't see them coming, congradulations it was very nice. Although I would have expected more anger from Spike but he's to beast to be mad for long. Nice bounce back!!
1911330 She will be helping Spike? So this won't be a FlutterSpike like I thought?
Oh well. NEXT
Edit: Wait..... I think you just got featured
me like :D
Pah, bah, meh, Spike is such a fool here...
Needs more Cowbell.
1911150 No problem! I'll be back soon to check on progress, but not right now (as I have to prepare for the start of school once more).
I can't help but feel the dialogue is quite... wooden. It seemed very flat, and didn't flow well at all. It was not a conversation that I feel anyone would have, and neither of them spoke as they would. Also, Rarity seems to go from 'I don't like you' to 'I want to be in a relationship with you but can't' within the span of a few paragraphs. It just feels like there is so much missing from the narrative. Build up to these kinds of things, don't just put them in.
Also, Spike's argument of 'You can't understand me' is very childish. Rarity is apparently okay with this, though?
I'll admit that is a very deep and well thought out reason on Rarity's part which is hard to find with fanfic that try to deal with this situation. But I have to ask, are these two getting together at the end, is going to be a FlutterSpike(which I have no problem with), a different pairing, or are you making this up as you go along?
Hhhmmm...
This has given me a weird feeling of calmness and curiosity.
Yea, a good chapter indeed, start off with a clean slate.
Let's see where this goes now.
Real character growth and development, I am sickened! with pride and happiness
So Rarity's plan is this. The only way she'll return Spike's feelings if he learns to be sincere and a gentledrake. I can understand what she's trying to do with this in order to make Spike seem more refined. However, I really have a bad feeling this whole reconditioning thing is going to go wrong big time and Spike will get so caught up in being sincere and noble that he'll turn into Prince Blueblood.
Disapointed. Too banal, too trivial, like i've read this about 1000 times in other books and stories. Also, i don't believe, that when you love someone, trully love, you have to get used to it. Ofc, you don't have to rush into things, but you don't have to leave these feelings behind, just to heal up and get used to it, coz these feeling ARE your remedy. The other reason is that you aren't sure that you love her/him back and you need time to find it out. But if it's not so, she gives Spike a false hope again, and next time, it would hurt Spike much stronger. Btw, it would be a nice plot twist.
From your comments, i thought it would be something new, mb tragic, and Fluttershy would help Spike ot overcome this. That would be beautiful and touching. But you' made too obvious twist ( for me it's obvious, coz i've read a lot of romantic stories )
It's my opinion, sorry if i was too rough.
1911293 If you've read the original not the rewrite you get a small idea of the role she plays
1911375 Who said that this won't be a FlutterSpike?
1914085 Unless someone is being a douche with thier opinion, I welcome everybodys. You were not harsh at all. In fact, I welcome feedback such as yours. Concerning what you had to say, I am not quite sure where you got the idea that Rarity is not sure that she loves Spike. Rarity is not wanting to be with SPike, because she has things she needs to learn first. Though I will say that if this chapter was confusing at all, it is because this chapter was done in the span of seven hours, so this is not exactly polished. In fact, I will probably be rewriting this chapter, making sure it communicates what I meant it to, because it seems like it has not. Thanks for leaving your feedback. I really appreciate it.
1911557 I have several different ideas that I am contemplating. As far as the pairings, it is partially being done as I go, only because a story is never exactly set in stone. A story evolves as you write it.
1911832 Glad you like it. A couple of people said that this was a poor chapter, that it was wooden and dull. Do you see that at all?
1914085 Also, trust me when I say that I have a plot twist that no one would ever expect. I just have to wait for the right time to use it.
1912135 Actually, it is the other way around. Rarity is the one who needs to learn sincerity, and that is the reason that she is not wanting to be with Spike right away.
1911796 In what way?
1911462 Which means what exactly?
1911525 Childish in what way?
1920379
1920387
Childish in that he actually believes that just because Rarity has never been in the exact same situation, she therefor can't possibly understand how he's feeling. It's an argument that only children use, because their world revolves around them. A more mature person would understand that even though another person hasn't been in exactly the same situation, they can still understand to a degree how you're feeling. In all honesty, if I were Rarity, it would be a clear indicator to me that Spike wasn't ready for an adult relationship yet.
1920560 Which is exactly why Rarity told him that they are not ready to be together yet. They both have things they need to learn. Thanks for you feedback BTW.
1920354 Boring... well it's not the most exciting thing, a conversation, but it is necessary. I personally hate writing dialogue usually, but I'm a good enough reader and writer to know not everything can be action and explosions, especially in romance. I read the guy's comment who called it "wooden," and I don't think he payed very good attention. A lot of Rarity's inner turmoil pointed to her having feelings for Spike, foreshadowing is a common and true feature of writing. You cliffedhanged us on the idea it was all going to hell, yes, but there was plenty of support built beforehand to pull the turn around as you did. I really felt the conversation was well played and honest. Spike should be angry and upset; it's not childish to feel betrayed and hurt when someone you love, especially as long as Spike has, tells you something like that. If anything, his choice to stay shows his maturity. Rarity has obviously put a lot of thought into all of this, and she isn't wrong in the set-up here. There's nothing unreasonable about either choices or actions. Rarity has enough experience, as she said, to know that starting a relationship that way they are now is a bad idea. She needs to prove to Spike, but most importantly, she needs to prove to herself that she deserves to have Spike's love. "Real love isn't about trying to capture your love's heart; it's about giving them yours." And Rarity, well, she doesn't know if she deserves Spike's after she's ignored his attempt to give it for so long. Equally true, Spike has to let go of all the hurt, or, as he's already started to, hes just going to end up having nothing but contempt for her. Love isn't easy; I have no idea why anyone would expect it to be.
1920613 Thank you. I needed to hear that. I am glad that someone realizes everything that you just said, because that is exactly what I sent out to communicate. Thanks again!
1920352 And as you go along the story takes a life of it's own. I can understand. Don't keep us waiting too long.
1920374 So is she going to turn into a reflection of Prince Blueblood with this whole thing?
1920726 Not at all.
1920726 That would be in very poor taste.
1920619 I honestly don't get where people are coming from with the whole, "let go of their love," thing either. At no point did anyone say anything about Spike having to stop his old love for her and start anew. I'm starting to think that they make stuff up as they read.
1920771 Neither do I. I value your feedback a lot. You are a a very good writer, and someone whose opinion I always look forward to hearing.
1920740 I see now. I guess it's just me thinking something will go wrong.
1920919 Well, conflict is what keeps a story going, but rest assured, I have no plans on implementing something like that, though I do have plans of a different sort.
1920931 Okay then.
1920950 Blueblood can't always be the bad guy.
1921007 That's how I generally see him though.
1921131 Why?
1921224 To me, he's the most lifeless pony in the entire show. He's got a one dimensional personality and has no real back story to him. All he serves in the show is just being a rather boring snob and nothing else.
1920377
Don't worry its positive.
1921656Well, it is up to us writers to give him some backstory and personality, no?
1921702 Good.
1922136 True I guess.
Sorry I am late to reply. But this is a flutterspike fic? Awesome have a mustache
1929843 Well, to be honest, it all depends on how the story evolves. I do want to do a FlutterSpike, but that all depends on where the story goes. Writing is an art form. Just like a drawing, what you set out to do, is not always what you wind up doing.
My entire life has been one like this story which is probably why i love this so much. Not only is this well written, the reader is able to connect with the characters emotions through your descriptions. Lovely work here
