    Updates and an Exquisite Corpse

So, I finally updated again! Sorry that it took so long. Editing that one was very difficult and I've been distracted with other things. I hope that the next one won't take as long. It also contains the first bonus chapter. You can now see the aftermath of Discord's defeat, why Right had to be a ghost as opposed to another type of undead and learn a bit about the caribou/reindeer (both names are correct, but Equestrians use the first).

Caribou tend to be slower and frailer than ponies, but they can walk on air and are more magically powerful on average. (Ironic for a warrior culture like theirs, but hey) They are also excellent craftsdeer. In caribou culture, the importance of proving oneself is well, very important. As such, they are very competitive and they are not short of soldiers, particularly in their navy as they are avid sailors and explorers. Innovation and perfectionism is also highly thought of by them. Despite being more aggressive than say, Equestria, they also tend to be very generous. Gift-giving is another important part of their culture and being given the opportunity to volunteer for Prince Rudolph's system of annually distributing gifts worldwide is considered a great honour to them. Ontareeindeer is rich in coal deposits and giving coal as a gift is a massive insult in their culture. Their competitive nature and powerful magic means that many winners of The Last Use of Antlers have been caribou. The current ruler of Ontareeindeer is Queen Vixen.

I have also once again participated in an exquisite corpse. This one's prompt was "Tealove goes on a search for magical tea leaves and uncovers a conspiracy". The resulting lack of continuity is very funny. You can read it here. I have been planning to use Snowatcher myself, but in a very different role from the one she has here.

Season Four, requests for proofreaders and a sneak peak

So, another season has come and gone and I really enjoyed it. I've also added the latest update to A Debt to the Stars. Unfortunately, it's not upon EQD yet, but I've reminded them now. I hope that Plutonia's origin is appreciated, considering how popular she is.

As I said, Season Four renders my verse undeniably AU, but how much? Honestly, not all that much. In fact, I'm declaring that the basic events of every episode in Season Four still happen, though obviously some details will need to change. I'll try to clear up the important differences as we go along.

The next thing I'd like to note is that a lot of my normal proofreaders have become a lot more busy, which is making it harder for me to get my editing done. More proofreaders results in better quality. So, I'm asking if anyone is interested in prereading for me. There's a little something I've been hoping to get out for a while now that really only has it's first paragraph preread and everyone' become too busy sine then, for example.

Next, I decided to start getting ready for the next fic in the series. It will be post season four, heavily inspired by The Moonstone Cup and I've decided to give you the (absolute) first draft (so bare in mind that there will be a lot more meat added and stuff is subject to change) of the first two scenes as a sneak peak.

    The Last Use of Antlers

    Chapter 1: Control

The elk bit his lip as he walked down the frozen passageway. Two guards in barding of blue ice stood at the door to the throne room. “The king summoned me,” he said.

One of the guards nodded and his antlers lit, melting away the door. The civilian walked through the portal and gazed up at the king on his enormous throne. Each of his antlers could have held a small swimming pool, if it would not be frozen and added to the many icicles which hung from them. His coat was as white as the snow which fell outside. “Welcome, Gravera!” he said.

You wished to see me, King Jokel?

Yes.” He lifted his head to the guards. “Leave us. I don’t think he’ll be a threat.”

One of the guards giggled at that and they left the room. With a glow from Jokel’s antlers, the door was once more frozen shut.

I hear that you failed to qualify for the international section of The Last Use of Antlers again this year.

Gravera kept his head bowed. “That is correct, your Majesty. I am sorry if I have disappointed you.

Actually, it leaves you in a position I can make use of. How would you like to not only qualify next year, but be the only elk to do so and to win?

Gravera lifted his head and blinked three times. “I don’t understand, your Majesty. We elk have always done rather well at The Last Use of Antlers. Why would we cripple our chances by only entering one mage? And while I hope to enter next year again, to actually stand a chance of winning I’d probably have to quit my job and spend practically all my time training!

And so you will. You are being conscripted. You will be compensated by the state. Understand that I don’t do this merely as a favour to you. I am asking you to perform a great duty for both me personally and for the kingdom of Scantlernavia.” He got up off his throne and walked over to the window. He stared into the distance. “Our enemies grow strong. It is time for us to even the playing field. The next Last Use of Antlers will be the perfect time for us to regain our power and you are key to my plan.

Gravera bowed again. “May my king’s will be done.

    (/)

    One year later:

... and finally,” announced Noa, evergreen deer of Earth, “I would like to wish my opponents good luck at this year’s Last Use of Antlers Festival and I hope the rest of you are picking some good judges. It should be a lot of fun!

I’ve never seen Noa in such a good mood before! thought Twilight.

Well, that’d be the reason, Zaida told her. Cervids love The Last Use of Antlers. It’s their most important festival. It’s a real pity that you’re not allowed to go. I’ve always wanted to.

“You did?” asked Twilight, feeling free to speak allowed no that the other cosmics were getting up from their chairs.

Of course! I would have loved to have seen the mighty displays of cervid magic that went on in the competition. I’ve always been fond of the magic of other races. Part of the reason that I’m glad to have an alicorn rather than another rainbow zebra as my successor.

“Well ... I’m glad that you think so,” said Twilight. While she was used to her wings by now, it was still a bit disconcerting to have the voice of the previous holder of her seat in her head.

I can hear what you’re thinking, remember.

    Twilight winced. “No offense.”

Don’t worry. I understand. I remember what it was like back when I was in your position. Anyway, I’m surprised that you never went before. Not that you’d be allowed now. Magic’s even your special talent.

“Well, I was a little close minded when I was younger. I didn’t see the point in pausing my studies to watch magic I couldn’t learn anyway. And after moving to Ponyville, I had a lot of other plans.”

That’s true. I’d still think that you’d be interested though.

“I am, actually. Maybe I can learn more about it even without going there myself.” She tapped her chin with her hoof.

    50 Questions and Answers!

So, I came across a list of 50 questions about one's headcanon here.

I thought that I may as well answer them as far as the Truthseekerverse is concerned (or me personally where it can't apply to just that). Obviously some of these answers will be pretty obvious by now, but kaybe someone who hasn't read the fics yet will want to read these answers and maybe getting official word of god would be nice or some of you. Note that a lot of this isn't cast in stone.

    The Princesses:

    1. How old are Celestia and Luna?

Celestia is 2900. Luna is 2700, but she didn’t really age on the moon, so she’s still teenager-ish in many respects. Of course, it seems that in the show, they’re even older than this, now that we’ve seen Princess Twilight Sparkle.

    2. How old is Cadance?

    180. As an ascended alicorn, she ages faster than one born that way and she had already done most of her foalhood. She also rushed adolescence as was within her power as the alicorn of love. She still has some teenager-like tendencies though.

    3. Were Celestia and Luna always alicorns, or did they ascend?

Celestia and Luna were born alicorns as their parents were alicorns as well. As Cadance has married an ordinary pony, she can have both alicorns and ordinary ponies as foals. Any alicorns would be demi-alicorns like herself and other ascended alicorns as they only had one alicorn parent. If Cadance married an alicorn stallion, they would have full alicorn children like Celestia and Luna.

    4. Are Cadance and Twilight immortal?

No. They merely age approximately ten times slower. Celestia and Luna in turn age approximately ten times slower than they do. In the show, however, it seems that Celestia and Luna age even slower than I suspected.

    5. Have there been other alicorns in the past?

Many. They aren’t immortal, so most died. During the period of segregation between the tribes, however, they mostly lived in exile as they were viewed as abominations.

    6. How much authority do Celestia and Luna have in Equestria?

They can technically write or veto any law unless the other sister disagrees. Celestia finds this inefficient and Luna finds it boring though. As such, they mostly serve as arbitrators. They also have the power to grant or strip noble titles. This is important as the nobility is slightly more powerful than the other two chains of command in normal circumstances.  They also choose the highest ranked members of the Guard (and can hire and fire any members), a second chain of command and the one that is most powerful in wartime. The elected chain of command is not chosen by them (naturally), but they still outrank even the Chancellor.

    7. Does Shining Armor rule The Crystal Empire along side of Cadance?

As Prince-consort (referred to as Prince where the distinction is not important) and Commander, Shining holds a lot of power, but Cadance still outranks him. Also, as the Crystal Empire is now considered part of the territory of the Principality of Equestria, Celestia and Luna still outrank him as well.

    8. Other than Twilight, Luna, and Cadance, what relationships have been important to Celestia in her lifetime (students, close friends, lovers, family)?

Celestia was very sociable in her youth and had many friends. The past thousand years were too painful to get particularly close to anypony new though. She has mostly avoided romance for similar reasons, considering the loss of a lover to be more painful. She was also close to her parents and was friendly to most of her extended family, though she became more withdrawn with the deaths of most of them and Luna’s banishment though.

    Ponies and Equestrian Culture:

    9. Are there still cultural differences between earth ponies, pegasi, and unicorns, or is the culture homogeneous by the time shown in canon? Are there cultural stereotypes (positive or negative)?

They’re mostly homogenous, though there are certain tendencies which still apply somewhat. Pegasi tend to respect athleticism, earth ponies, diligence and unicorns, decorum, for example. Again, these are minor tendencies. These can be exaggerated into stereotypes, but ponies tend to know members of the other two tribes well enough to not exaggerate too much.

    10. Are there foods or items native to Cloudsdale that are uncommon on the ground? Are there foods or items on the ground that are uncommon in Cloudsdale?

There would be, yes. Comes from working with different mediums. Such items aren’t terribly difficult to acquire though as they merely require a transporting pegasus.

    11. Can all unicorns learn all spells, given the time and effort spent practicing them, or is magical talent usually limited in some way?

Theoretically, it is possible. Practically, the difficulty with learning a new spell increases as it becomes less related to one’s talent very rapidly and it is not considered worth the effort to learn more than a few in most cases.

    12. Earth pony magic: Does it exist? What is it?

It totally exists. It is based on the earth pony’s relationship with the ground, what comes from the ground and the spacial dimensions which can be coaxed to act in different ways.

    13. Some pony families we’ve seen seem to have naming conventions (the Apples, Twilight’s family) and others don’t appear to (Rarity’s family, Pinkie’s family), which is more common? Are there reasons for one or the other?

This is obviously not canon based on what’s been learned later on, but it’s quite important to the Truthseekerverse, so here we go: Ponies do have a form of surname, but whether it is inherited from the mother or father is arbitrary. Similarly, upon marriage, whether the mare takes the stallion’s surname, the stallion takes the mare’s surname or they both keep their names is also decided mostly by convenience and aesthetics. Middle names are also sometimes given. Many ponies don’t really use their surname though and members of the Royal family do not have one as their title serves as an equivalent.

    14. How much formal schooling is an average, middle class pony expected to complete?

    They finish High School, generally.

    15. What’s the average lifespan for a pony? At what age is a pony expected to be independent of their parents?

This is about the same as in Western humans.

    16. Are there roughly an equal number of male and female ponies?

The number of females is only slightly higher than the number of males, but as stallions are more likely to leave their hometown, the difference can appear stark in smaller villages like Ponyville.

    17. How informed are most ponies about things that happen in other parts of Equestria? What about other parts of the world?

They are awful about this! They don’t pay much attention to that which isn’t currently affecting them.

    The Main Characters:

    18. How old are the Mane Six? Spike? The CMC?

Applejack is 27, Rarity and Fluttershy are 26, Twilight, Pinkie and Rainbow are 25, Spike is chronologically 13 but mentally in his late adolescence and the CMC are 14.

    19. Did Fluttershy remain on the ground after getting her cutie mark? Were she and Rainbow Dash friends all along, or did they drift apart for a while?

Canon says that she returned, so she did. Not for long though. Fluttershy and Rainbow’s relationship was slightly cooled by distance for a while, but they were always friends.

    20. Rarity and Applejack both seem to have grown up in Ponyville. What were their interactions like before the show?

They were neighbourly, but did not spend a lot of time together and did not consider each other as candidates for getting close to.

    21. What do Twilight and Spike consider their relationship to be?

Complicated. Adopted siblings were the older sibling later became legal guardian and where the younger helps out at the shop would be closest, I guess.

    22. When did Pinkie move in with the Cakes? Is she a worker who rents a room, an apprentice, or is there some other relationship?

She moved in with the Cakes as a teenager. She is an apprentice and worker who gets paid largely in free rent and sweets. She is also like a daughter to them.

    23. Who among the Mane Six had the best parents growing up? The worst parents?

Twilight had the best parents. Fluttershy had the “worst” is that they had the most difficulty understanding her and how to help her. They still tried though, which is a lot better than many real world parents.

    24. Why didn’t the CMC hang out more/know each other before Call of the Cutie?

At the time, they were in different classes. Cheerilee teaches more than one. But she mixes them up every year.

    25. Is Scootaloo an orphan? Will she ever be able to fly?

No, and not with current Equestrian medicine.

    26. Will Apple Bloom’s cutie mark involve an apple in some way, even if it’s unrelated to farming or baking?

Aplebloom’s cutie mark will be a painting of an apple that is still being painted.

    27. How is Sweetie Belle’s relationship with their parents different than Rarity’s was?

Sweetie Belle is less irritated by her parents, but is also less mollycoddled.

    Side and Background Characters:

    28. Is Mr. Cake the father of the Cake twins or not?

    Yes.

    29. Are Big Mac and Cheerilee an item, romantically?

They’re testing the waters. Big Mac is nervous and doesn’t want to rush things.

    30. How did Prince Blueblood get his title?

He got it because his mother was upgraded from Duchess to Princess before his birth as a reward from Celestia. Duchess is still a high rank anyway due to the fact that they are descendents of Celestia’s family. Unfortunately, he was spoiled rotten.

    31. Is Silver Spoon equally as bad as Diamond Tiara?

Silver Spoon is less malicious, if that’s what you mean.

    32. Is Zecora’s magic common among zebras?

Yes, but mixing potions from plants is her talent, so she’s better than they are at that particular aspect of magic. They have other magic as well.

    33. Why does Daring Do publish her stories as fiction?

Because she wanted to be an author before she started adventuring. She became Daring DO as research for her next book and things escalated. This lets her continue to live her dream while still fulfilling her duties. It also lets her edit classified information.

    34. Do you have a strong headcanon for any non-speaking or one line background ponies that you want to share?

Lyra isn’t obsessed with humans specifically. She’s into anything that’s unusual.

    Other Species:

    35. Does Equestria differentiate between speaking and non-speaking species, in terms of respect, rights and legal responsibilities? Is there some other line or scale used? (For example, how are cows classified? Diamond Dogs? A chimera?)

Ponies instinctually tend to think of non-ponies as things that either need to be protected, or feared. Often both. This can be irritating to other sapient races, but can be worked around.

    36. Do other speaking species form their own nations, or are all nations largely integrated, with some having larger populations of a species than others?

Most nations are largely dominated by a small number of dominant races, with a few minorities. Exceptions are unusual, but exist.

    37. Are minotaurs related to cows at all?

Yes. They are different tribes of the same race, in the same way that unicorns, pegasi and earth ponies are the three lagest tribes of the race of ponies. They are not related to humans. They merely have a humanoid shape.

    38. Do all zebras rhyme?

Language is sacred in zebra culture. As such, they always limit their speech with quirks when speaking a language other than their native tongue. Rhyming is one way of doing this, but not the only one.

    39. Do zebra cutie marks work the same way as pony cutie marks?

The difference is entirely in form. They are identical in function.

    40. Do any species have types of magic, other than ponies and zebras?

    All of them do.

    41. Is the lack of buffalo presence in Equestria cultural, or simply because most pony towns aren’t built to accommodate a full grown buffalo?

Pony villages aren’t the type of place the typical buffalo would want to live, so largely cultural. Their territory only barely extends into Equestria as well.

    Headcanon and You:

    42. Do you consider official sources other than the show (comics, card game text, movies, novels, etc.) to be canon?

Yes. Generally. With the exception of where there are contradictions.

    43. Do you have one headcanon that you always use, or do you switch depending on projects?

A lot of things are not fully fixed and I adapt them as necessary or convenient.

    44. Can you easily accept the headcanons of different writers? Do you prefer when stories match your headcanon?

I do tend to prefer it, but sometimes differences can lead in interesting directions, for which I’m glad.

    45. Is there a part of your headcanon that you wish was more popular among writers?

Well, popularising something would be nice.

    46. Is there a popular piece of headcanon that other writers use that you dislike?

I guess. Some would come across as petty though. Or be for stuff that’s already controversial anyway.

    47. Have you ever written a story or blogpost just to explain some part of your headcanon (other than this one)?

    Yes, I guess.

    48. Does your headcanon influence things like your favorite pony, ship, or episode?

That would be natural, wouldn’t it? I try to avoid too much influence in that way though.

    49. Would it bother you if the show proved part of your headcanon wrong? Any specific piece that would really bother you to lose?

Being wrong can be interesting! That said, there are things that I’d dislike being wrong about because of symbolism and stuff. It really depends. I dislike the fact that the Elements can be used solo (and they explicitely can’t in my verse), but I accept that despite the fact that I don’t really like it.

    50. Is there something that wasn't asked about here, but you feel like you need to explain to everyone?

Um, … Sorry that the next chapter’s taking a while? Been a bit busy.

Breezies, Chimeras and Exquisite Corpses, oh Pie!

Right! So, we've had an eventful few weeks.

The last chapter was naturally quite important due to it's relationship with both canon and with the background to the fic. As such, I hope that it went over well.

And, we've been introduced to some new sapient races! I've already modified the bible thread to include Breezies, Chimeras and I've started the timeline, among other things. This is all rough though. Still, have a look!

Speaking of breezies, Sea Breeze is too awesome for me to ignore, so I'm thinking o making him the breezie representative at The Last Use of Antlers. Being a judge, he can say things like, "Thees deer ees such a weemp! How can he be so een-kom-pee-tent!? He must be dee-skwoh-lee-fide!"

Then there's Maud! Maud is pure awesome! I think that I can work her into Truthseeker canon. I certainly hope so. She'd fit right in and is too awesome to not exist.

I'm busy editing chapter 6. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before it's out, but I have family visiting and am in the process of applying for a job. Speaking of jobs, my current position is a little tenuous at the moment, unfortunately.

Also, a while back, I wrote a section of an exquisite corpse. Anyone who has read PONEMURDERED should know the basic idea. The fic is called Derailed and is here: http://www.fimfiction.net/story/175316/1/derailed/if-on-a-sunny-day-a-traveler

I'm curious as to whether or not anyone can work out which my section was. We're planning to do more,  but this one did take us a while.

I'm actually working on another couple of collaborations,  but one is still in the planing stages and the other has had a couple of unfortunate setbacks. I'm hoping that the first chapter of it will be out before too much longer though.

The Curious Case of Flash Sentry

So, a while ago, the show had it's first movie, Equestria Girls. For those interested, I predicted hat I'd enjoy it, and I did.

Now, there was one thing introduced by Equestria Girls that got more vitriol than anything else. What's more, this came back momentarily in the comics and also in Three's a Crowd.

Not all of my opinions regarding the show are popular. But if there's one thing that's likely to split me from the majority of te fandom, it's this:

I like Flash Sentry. And yes, I ship him with Twilight. (Though, to be honest, a lot of my ships are mutually contradictory. For example, I ship Twilight with Big Mac as well.)

I've actually noticed that I have a rather different way of shipping from most fans. Probably why I have very different ships from many of the more popular ones. For goodness sake, my first ship for this show was FlutterSpike! (Then again, my secodn was the vry popular AppleDash)

In any event, I'm getting off topic. Flash has attracted lots of hate, or at least disdain.

Some of that being because they prefer Twilight to be with others. Well, as I said, I'm a TwiMac shipper and all Hearts and Hooves Day did to me was make me a CheeriMac shipper in addition to being a TwiMac shipper, so such things clearly don't bother me.

The second is the "waifu theif" stuff. Well, I'm fully aware that I'm not going to get with Twilight Sparkle. And even if she did exist, I'd be happy for her if she found love somewhere else (as is rather likely). I think I'd be happier with Fluttershy in the long run anyway and hey! I ship her with others as well!

And now we get to the crux of the issue. There are plenty out there claiming that Flash has no flaws, personality or is boring.

You see, this confuses me. Consider the popularity of Octavia, Vinyl Scratch, Lyra Heartstrings, Bon Bon, the list goes on! We had way less to work on for any of them. This is supposed to be the fandom that grabs hold of every pony that appears on screen and does something amazing with them! But now it's too much effort with Flash? Despite the fact that there are so many tantailising hints about him?

Here. Let me start. We first meet Flash in the Crystal Empire. He's one of Cadance's guards. Why? Did Shining select him or did he volunteer? Again, why? Cadance apparently doesn't know much about him by the en of the movie. Does that change? Is it because he's new? He announces Twilight. Does that mean that he has a higher rank than the crystal guards? Is this because al the crystal guards are new recruits? Is he the first pegasus to join the crystal guard? To move to the Crystal Empire? Again, why? Why does he look different from the crystal guards? Is it because he's a pegasus? Or the first pegasus considering the other one in Three's a Crowd?

Let's go through the mirror.  He's already wearing his cutie mark, suggesting that he's already decided what to do with his life. I doubt that they have royal guards, so what does that mean? Security guard? Police officer? Private investigator (considering his work on Sunset Shimmer's framing)? He plays in a band. We hear the kind of music he plays (not that that meansanything to me as I know nothing about music). Does his pony!self also play an instrument? Is it the same one? Does he also have a band? Or maybe want to start one (with the crystal ponies who are famous for the flugelhorn)? He dated two former ponies! Does he have a thing for the exotic? He seems to have a thing for adorkable. He seems to have a touch of adorkable himself.hy did he date Sunset Shimmer? Is he that naive and overly trusting? Did he feel sorry for her? What got him to finally dump her?

We know from the comics that he sometimes visits Equestria proper. Why? Is it by choice, or is he sent? Either way, why? He's also apparently afraid of opposums. Seeing as though these are Equestrian opposums, this is probably wise.

There is so much to go on! Spare the dude some effort.

In other news, I've finished my first draft of chapter 6 and am currently editting chapter 5. I think that one of my edittors would like me to split 5 in half though. Honestly, I think my edittors would rather have chapter 5 be a multi-chapter fic of its own, but this is a complicated fic and it needs to be here. So we'll see how things go.

This story is a sequel to An Earth Pony's Guide to Magic

When Pinkie's sisters dig up an ancient living weapon designed to fight Discord, they don't know that they have unleashed a massive threat to Equestria. How will the Princesses and the Mane 6 fight a force that keeps growing stronger and which they don't want to harm? After all, how can Pinkie fight a creature with her sister's face? (A sequel to An Earth Pony's Guide to Magic, though probably possible to read without having read the first fic in the series)

Looks interesting so far.  Pluto is hilarious. :rainbowlaugh:

Mare, Conformity is really picky about hair:ajbemused:

I can't wait to see her meet Rarity:pinkiecrazy:

Off to a promising start!

>>1452290 Thank you...but you seem to have not favourited. If you enjoyed it that much, wouldn't you want to be notified of chapter updates?

>>1452330 Thanks. I'll be glad to hear what you think when you've done so.

>>1452434 Thank you.

Pluto: I am not "hilarious". I am respectful of protocol and am understandably frustrated by the fact that I'm being forced to learn about the alphabets when I actually have an important job. Nopony appreciates what I do. I bet that Hades never had to put up with this. And Mortis was too busy trying to ensure that those who didn't survive Discord's reign were at least granted peace to deal with Celestia's rubbish. Cadance is lucky that Uncle Eros died before she was born. She gets to be celebrated. Everypony's thankful to the bringer of love, but nopony goes around saying, "I am so glad that ponies die." Makes one feel rather unnapreciated. I am the final rest, the last judgement, warden of Tartarus and guide to Elysium! DId nopony learn anything thse three days?!

Sorry about that. Pluto was feeling a bit annoyed (don't tell her, but I think it's good that you find her hillaious).

>>1452506 You have no idea. If you think she's picky about hair now, she isn't even done yet. Of course, she's picky about everything.

Conformity: WHAT YOU CALL "PICKINESS" IS MERELY A HEALTHY APPRECIATION FOR PERFECTION! WE DO NOT TOLERATE ANYTHING LESS THAN ABSOLUTE UNIFORMITY! WHAT DOES IT SAY ABOUT A PONY IF THEY CANNOT EVEN KEEP THEIR MANE STRAIGHT, SYMMETRICAL AND UNIFORM!?

>>1459768 Thank you. I hope that it doesn't dissapoint.

I REALLY DON'T LIKE HER MANE.

Not bad, not bad at all. Loved the inclusion of the wizard of the crystal mines in the list Pluto read. :rainbowlaugh: Also, Pluto, lighten up. ;) Conformity... pretty scary, all in all. Although if you think about it, Granny Smith's hip is now all healed...

A Rainbow streak landed in their midst. “There’s a huge white patch on the ground and it’s growing towards Sweet Apple Acres!” Rainbow reported.

IN TARTARUS' GATES?!?!!?!?

And I think there would be a moment of confusion on this being the CURRENT Starswirl, not the one from the history books.

Conformity wouldn't be SO BAD, if it wasn't obvious that she wasn't just spreading unity and uniformity but also EATING the ponies she converts. She's not just applying a template, she's DEVOURING them.

SO SPEAK TO US AND WE WILL LEAVE YOU AND APPLEBLOOM UNHARMED!”

She doesn't CONSIDER IT harm though. She considering it healing.

And how can she consider her style of assimilation a GOOD THING if she knows that it won't keep Discord in check like she was CREATED to do if she devours the Elements Bearers?

WE ARE CONFORMITY!

why does she bother saying 'we' when they're all just vessels for the same entity?

What does COnformity even plan to DO with herself once she's eaten everything?

What would this do to Parasprites? OR THE VIRUSES AND GERMS IN THE AIR? Butterflies?

...no two of my guards.”

Which means her guards have ceased to exist rather than becoming part of a whole like Conformity keeps claiming.

You can't turn a glass of purple dye back into two glasses of red and blue dye.

"Your unity is death! You don't bring together the ideas and emotions and feelings of those you absorb! You just harvest their raw knowledge, abilities and talent! If Granny Smith and Big Mac's hearts were really a part of you, you'd never be this HEARTLESS about this whole thing!"

>>1463447 :unsuresweetie:

:rainbowlaugh:

CONFORMITY: INDEED!

>>1464798 Thanks and yes, technically that's true.

>>1469649 Wow. This is an honour. Let's adress these:

IN TARTARUS' GATES?!?!!?!?: Technically, just in front of the gates themselves.

And I think there would be a moment of confusion on this being the CURRENT Starswirl, not the one from the history books.

For Celestia? Perhaps. Celestia's well aware of who the current Star Swirl is though, so I doubt that it would be hard for her to figure out.

Conformity wouldn't be SO BAD, if it wasn't obvious that she wasn't just spreading unity and uniformity but also EATING the ponies she converts. She's not just applying a template, she's DEVOURING them.

Pretty much. She's not exactly pleasant. She doesn't really see it that way to that extent though.

SO SPEAK TO US AND WE WILL LEAVE YOU AND APPLEBLOOM UNHARMED!”

She doesn't CONSIDER IT harm though. She considering it healing.

That she does. But she's smart and is trying to manipulate them into giving her more time to complete her plans.

And how can she consider her style of assimilation a GOOD THING if she knows that it won't keep Discord in check like she was CREATED to do if she devours the Elements Bearers?

This will be explained next chapter.

WE ARE CONFORMITY!

why does she bother saying 'we' when they're all just vessels for the same entity?

She thinks of herself in plural due to her multiple bodies.

What does COnformity even plan to DO with herself once she's eaten everything?

Maintain a world of absolute order.

What would this do to Parasprites? OR THE VIRUSES AND GERMS IN THE AIR? Butterflies?

You saw a bit of that with the apple tree. They too would eventually become species of a single individual named Conformity.

...no two of my guards.”

Which means her guards have ceased to exist rather than becoming part of a whole like Conformity keeps claiming.

...Sort of. There peronality has indeed ceased to exist and so has Celestia's connection to them. It was something that sepperated them from other ponies and was thus purged. Their bodies and minds have merely been altered though.

You can't turn a glass of purple dye back into two glasses of red and blue dye.

Not normally, yes. But remember that the setting is rather idealistic.

"Your unity is death! You don't bring together the ideas and emotions and feelings of those you absorb! You just harvest their raw knowledge, abilities and talent! If Granny Smith and Big Mac's hearts were really a part of you, you'd never be this HEARTLESS about this whole thing!"

Nice quote. May I use it?

>>1470361

You are free to use it. And Conformity is just a glorified eating machine with everything else as her meat.

She's not assimilating, she's consuming.

She feels nothing for Applebloom or Applejack in spite of their elder brother and grandmother having been eaten by her. If she was REALLY out for her INTENDED purpose, than those feelings of love towards them would have spread among her bodies like Lyra's horn did!!!

White is in fact ALL colors, so at least that makes sense with their intended purpose!

Not to mention she's not becoming one bit wiser with all the different points of view she SHOULD be getting, but in fact doesn't even TRY to assimilate. She just reaps their knowledge and abilities. She doesn't even try to increase her wisdom with their different points of view.

So basically, she's not even fulfilling her intended function.

I would suggest dividers or extra empty lines for when there's a scene change. It kinda got confusing near the end whenever they moved quickly from place to place.

Other than that, I like where this is going. :rainbowkiss:

>>1470361

If you are going to quote bits of people's posts in your reply its a good idea to make sure that your stuff is distinct from theirs, there area few different ways (coloured text, a different typeface, ect) but the best is probably to use quote tags.  They can be inserted either with the quote button above the "Add Comment" field or manually as {quote}{/quote} (replacing the curly brackets with square ones)

>>1470561

So basically, she's not even fulfilling her intended function.

I'd disagree, Conformity was intended to counter Discord's chaos and seems like it would be a perfect job of that.  Of course the fact that pure order is just as bad as pure chaos means that the cure is no better, and arguably worse given that Discord seemed to like keeping ponies around as individuals (they are more fun to play with that way).

>>1471337

Except Discord's chaos WASN'T pure. It had sadism and selfishness put into the mix.

This story seems to drive home the fact that order is NOT harmony.:ajbemused: Her order is not perfection, it is negation. It shall bring stagnation to the world, and deny the harmony needed for life. Her "unity" is nothing more then that of the grave.:ajsleepy:

I await the next chapter.

I am pleased that this story is generating so much debate.:yay::twilightsmile::trollestia:

>>1470561 Thanks! Your points are valid, but again, she doesn't see it that way. It should be noted that Conformity is INSANELY stubborn and that this was actually a deliberate design choice as it was meant to be a defense against Discord's mind rape. She'd see incorporating the viewpoints of others as succoming to the corruption of individuality. But again, Conformity DID NOT turn out as intended. She was an act of desperation by two alicorns who weren't even able to work together as their lifespans didnt overlap.

>>1470706 More line breaks. I'll try bear that in mind. I may even edit a few more into this chapter later. Glad that you're enjoying it.

>>1471337 Thanks! I didn't know that.

>>1471349 This is true. Technically, Conformity isn't pure Order either. For one thing, it's tainted with absurd amounts of arrogance.

>>1471543 Exactly. Glad that you're enjoying it.

>>1472933

That's actually rather said when you think about it. Is Discord a sadistic monster instead of a benign trickster because of his NATURE or by CHOICE? Conformity didn't have any choice on how she is. Everything about her was decided for her. She can't even CHOOSE to follow her function in a way that would bring about transponyism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhumanism joining the whole of the traits of all pony minds until a single understanding consciousness that ENCOMPASSES all and LOVES all is born.

Instead she'll just eat and eat until she's the only presence in creation and NOT EVEN LOVE THE gods who created her, only cherry picking traits that suit her goal of devouring everything rather, than the larger goal of an order tainted by love the same Discord's chaos is tainted by sadism. Never loving or creating anything.

Conformity is NOT Instrumentality. Instrumentality was the breaking down of the barriers between all human hearts.

And pure order and pure chaos are BOTH neither good or evil by their definitions. BOTH are as likely to cause harm OR good. Discord was a sadistic jerk.

Were dealing with a ponyfied smith? Quick someone find neigh-o! The pony matrix is in danger!

Well, this is off to an interesting start. Can't wait to see where this goes.

I just caught the joke in the title!

>>1474880 yes:rainbowlaugh:

This Conformity is actually rather terrifying, in concept. Good old fridge logic:pinkiecrazy:

This chapter seemed a bit hastily done to me. This is mostly improper formatting and the pacing being a little faster than most stories. I noticed a few times where, "One person was speaking," "And then a second began on the same line." Also, there might have been a few missing page breaks. For example, the first transition to Ponyville looks like it could use a little more space between it and the previous paragraph. Spelling was good as far as I saw and the story itself is enjoyable, so you're doing that right.

In short, more spacing your lines, please.

>>1473208>>1473210 Yes. Let me put it this way, I view Conformity as evil, but not completely vile, like Discord. She has some well-intentioned extremism going on.

>>1474880 She IS a bit like Smith, isn't she? But I'll be honest, she was inspired more by the Borg. She's ConBorgity as opposed to DisQord. Though, while Discord is more evil than Q and hasn't demonstrated as much power, Conformity is meant to be a little more sympathetic than the Borg while arguably being more powerful.

>>1482006 Hope that you like the result.

>>1482188 Glad that the joke isn't completely lost and that Conformity is provoking some emotinal responses.:trollestia:

>>1485635 Hmmm...I DID have to reformat when I imported. I'll have to relook at the source to try rectify the problem.

Pluto is best OC alicorn.

I do like the idea that there are quite a few alicorns out there besides Celestia and Luna (and Cadance).

...

Borg Alicorn, Doctor, Tartarus, Death-Alicorn, Sailor Alicorns, history of Discord, Octavia cousin of Pinkie Pie, a lots of evil lords, attack of white-clone-alicorns...

Another comparison is how in D&D the mindflayers THINK the Elder Brains works, and how the Elder brains ACTUALLY work. The mindflayers think that when they die and their brains are graphed onto the elder brain, their identity and thoughts are absorbed into the group mind. In reality the elder brain just harvests any useful knowledge and wiped the rest for space for itself. Not that it's about to tell any of the LIVING mindflayers that.

Conformity sells her methods like they're the former, when she's not even trying to hide they're the latter.

>>1486082 Glad that you like her.

>>1487340 From the fact that you faved, I'm guessing that this is a good reaction.

>>1491277 I wouldn't put her quite on the level of an elder brain, but you make a good point.

I really need to get the next chapter up so that you guys have more to work with.:twilightblush:

See above.

Vulcans don't have laughter in their culture, and they're hardly evil for it.

Vulcans supprss their emotions (for admittedly good reason). This includes positive emotions like happiness. That is what is being reffered to here. A world without laughter is a world without joy. Hardly a Utopia.

And think I get it: A logic-based construct goes maverick with "Remove all (humanity) to protect (humanity)."

So, like the AI from that one Will Smith movie? I think Gargoles did similar, too.

>>1539818 I see what you are saying, but Death's voice always reminds me of something being engraved in your mind, not barreling one over with the force of his speech.

The problem is trying to convey great volume without resorting to 'he boomed', ' she roared' 'the voice echoed off the surrounding countryside', and the like.

Conformity reminds me very much of the Borg, with assimulating and "resistance is futile" and all that. I loved how it was trying to convince the elements of how wonderful it's ideals are and it couldn't find a way to include laughter.
