Princess Luna has contracted an airship as part of a lengthy political move to gain more power in her sister's court, and she has invited Canterlot's Elite, along with a few other choice ponies, for the maiden voyage. However, once the Darkest Night takes flight, mystery and intrigue mar what should have been a pleasant cruise.

It is up to Ink Well and his wife Rose to discover the truth, or watch as one lie sparks a war between nations.

This is a continuance of the Newsworthy Saga and a direct sequel to Weather Manifesto.

YES! I do so love this series :pinkiehappy:

I am excited by the return of Ink Well and Rose. Although, I am uncertain as whether Scootaloo may be the best choice in foal sitters. Not that I don't like her, she is my favorite CMC, but she is to much like her idol Rainbow Dash. And I wouldn't trust her with a foal. Though I may be wrong. :scootangel:

Instant favorite. I love your series sir. So happy to see it continuing.

Nice! I was waiting for this sequel.

Looks like this is the beginning of the diplomat Ink Well that was hinted at during Source Material. Very nice that it is also tying in to the events of Weather Manifesto.

Well that's not good. I'm guessing Ink Well is not going to get any time to relax with Rose now.

Enjoyable as always, I am interested in your take on Fancy Pants. Most stories always seem to have him pigeonholed as a "real pony of the people". A pony who can't stand the dealing of the upper class. It's interesting to see a story where he seems to be just another noble.

Blueblood/Gilda. snrk.

Seriously, I was half expecting Ink Well and Rose to not have been as loud as they thought, get clued in when Fancy Pants mentioned something about gryphons, then give themselves away anyway by acting excessively relieved.

Wow !
Things are getting real.
Thank you for amazing writing!

Excellent chapter. I loved all the scenes between Ink Well and Rose. It's great that she gets to come along on the adventure this time. Well... great for us, maybe not so much for her... :twilightsheepish:

This story is good. I want to read more <3
I saw in the description that your image is a placeholder until you find something better. So, what would you like me to draw? I'm pretty much just starting out when it comes to pony art, but I'm not utterly terrible, and you have no obligation to use it as the story image if you'd rather not. Truth is, I like making things for people, so if you just want anything from the Noteworthy series drawn, regardless... tell me what, and I'll do my best.

Well, if you could draw Rose and Ink Well looking up at the Darkest Night, that would be awesome. I'm not above using fan-images for things. Both Newsworthy and Source Material's covers are from fans, so... Yeah, anything you make would be much appreciated

Shit, sucka! It's gonna get real!

So, changelings? That's going to make things difficult...

He hadn't hardly moved since

And I think "He had hardly moved" or "He hadn't moved" would work better.
Just my two bits.

Damn!
What a nasty cliffhanger you got here :applecry:
And now we have to wait another month with Inkwell in this state. :twilightangry2:
Though regardless how much I dislike cliffhangers while reading - they do make whole process much more memorable later
Thank you for the update.
I will eagerly wait for the next chapter.

If I don't leave you on a cliffhanger then you wouldn't keep reading.... and I will do my best to not take a month, but then you know how well I do that.

3429144
Noted, I'll stop thinking in dialect

3427983
Aww... I was kinda hoping for this reactiongifs.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/THISGONBGUD.gif

Yeah, we were all guessing changeling the moment we heard green magic. Still, that basically just expands the suspect list to all the guests AND the entire crew as a replacement victim.

First suspect is Fancy Pants. Cutting himself paring the grapefruit could have been a cover to injury during the attack.

Oh yeah, this is gonna get cool!

So is our assassin dead or unconscious? And where is the real Fancy Pants? these are some of the unanswered questions that I have.

Also, this is a guess but I think Luna might be paving the stepping stones for the Lunar Republic with this journey. Power, influence, money. Blueblood, Fancy Pants, Greenback. If Luna had those ponies with her, she'd hold a considerable advantage in politics over Celestia. Plus what happened to the gryphons in your last tale, they would have little love for Celestia and would rather see Luna supplant her.

Awesome but soooooo short story.
Or was it the first part culmination only ?

There is one more chapter coming. Much shorter than the others, but it should answer most questions here.

And just so you know, in my head... this is story 4 of 5 for Ink Well. Which doesn't say these are the only ones in the universe, but... Yeah.

And the finale... it's big.

Thanks for sticking with this story so far, glad you've been enjoying it.

I dunno... Couldn't we date or something first? Tell you what, I'm free for coffee next Tuesday evening. Just figure out where I live, teleport there, figure out which coffee shop I mean, and be there at 7, we'll see if we can't work something out. :pinkiehappy:

In all seriousness, though, it's stuff like this that really make my day. Thank you so much for reading, and I hope you enjoy whatever comes up next.

I am so very glad I finally found the time to catch up on your writing, Medicshy. It's been far too long since I've had time to do that, and you are easily one of my favorite authors. ^_^

I'm also somewhat glad that I never got around to finishing my attempt at cover art for this, as I couldn't possibly have created anything as wonderful as Puzzle Reader did.

Incomplete? I take it there's an epilogue coming? Or a link to the next story for those who don't follow you?
Also: final installment? I suppose all good things must come to an end...

3523512
Oh, oops... forgot to switch it to complete. Silly me

Thank you for this brilliant story !
It is great and I'm looking forward to the final one

This was brilliant.

But it feels a bit unfinished. Lots of loose ends to tie up. But that's for the next and final one to complete. I can't wait.

3526164 That's the one super unfortunate thing about making a series, if you want a big payoff at the end, you have to deny a smaller payoff in the middle. I don't WANT to, but if I don't then nobody will keep reading, and then I'll be all alone again.... :fluttercry:

Just kidding :pinkiecrazy:. But as much as this might not feel completely satisfactory, I'm hoping at the end of the next one everyone will want to stand up and applaud or something, which will also make everyone be like "We don't need a sequel to this, this wrapped up perfectly" and I can go do spin offs and stuff. Like any good show/series truly dreams.

Final installment. How dare you curse in such fowl language. This "final installment better be the longest story we've had yet or else I don't know I'll continue the story and slaughter it like I do with most things I write mwa ha ha feel my power. Seriously though only one story left please make it a long story like book 1.

3526786
I have two options, really. I can end the series where I believe it should end, attempting to make it as epic as i can and everything work out, or I can be one of those writers who goes on and on long after they have lost all interest for a character or even know what is happening.

Which isn't to say I have lost interest in Ink Well, he's a great character and he actually has many adventures left in him. I just believe that he deserves a bit of rest after the next one to live out what will be a rather complicated and interesting life.

If everyone rants and screams at me, I'll do more with him, but all good things come to an end eventually...

It will hopefully make sense in the next story. until then, I hope you don't abandon me out of fear.

Oh, and with it currently mapped out in my head... the next one is looking to be the longest story yet, depending on how things play out. The result i get is never the picture I started with (originally Ink Well was never even going to meet Rose after that first day) so we'll just have to see what happens when we get there.

3527013
Totally understand that was half joking with my comment. Good to hear we've got a long story ahead. Funny story about the name ink well is that before I discovered this series I had begun a fanfic with a main character with the name of Ink Speck who happened to be a writer. I think ink is just a stupidly common name for oc's who write. Anyways good luck on your writing. And again I was joking about the whole no end to series I totally see where you're coming from.

3527103
I just figured I'd explain my thoughts on it. I have run into people who wouldn't be joking with a comment like that, so I figured I'd let it be known that I'm not just faffing about.

Ink Well in this story isn't even the only Ink Well I know of. There's one that's an artist, one from the comic that's the headmistress for the school for gifted unicorns, and at least two more i can't remember at the moment.

With pony naming conventions, some must just be common.

Typo: "Or rather, it stunner her" instead of "stunned".

Poor Rose, with all those flashbacks! She needs a hug. And of COURSE Luna's direct intervention would help her sleep better, assuming that intervention came in the form of connecting her with her husband via their dreams.

Second fic I've come across with changelings being distinguishable by their blood (first was 'Winning Pony'). Makes sense I suppose, if people are getting their ideas from 'The Thing'; and even if they've never watched that movie (like me), it's enough of a cultural thing that the idea's probably been absorbed into our collective unconscious.

MORE than one changeling? Specifically, more than one faction? Ooh, interesting.

--Fancy Pants's the changeling. Fleur's headache.
I was right!

Now this was a fun one to read. And so goes the start of the changeling heart. As well as the fourth of this little gems alliance.

This was a classic whodunit. And it was spun well. You give a few options, plenty of possibles, and even a nice changeup mid-story.

I have no complaints to this story. It's woven well, arachne well. And is a nice jaunt. Well done.
