Pony with a Pen

Sometimes, I wonder what it would be like to not write about ponies. When I have those moments, I write about ponies.

Set shortly after the final scene of Season 9.

Months after the end of it all, Spike and Ember have a conversation on a familiar, lonely cliffside. Because even when it's over, the friendships we made along the way will go on. They look different—everything is different—but if you look hard enough, you might still be able to recognize the same magic. Faded, but still growing.

Thanks, I appreciate that! Writing this one felt special, and I think that comes through in the finished work.

Really good work here. Very touching and yet also feeling of something transformative. :raritywink:

Thank you! I wanted to keep it in line with canon, but flesh things out a little--give the pair a little love without breaking their characters.

This is why I hate G5. Apparently, all this progress is going to be destroyed. Think about it. If Equestrian society collapses, what hope is there for all the other races? It wouldn't surprise me if Changelings are extinct in G5.

Eh, let it be what it will. I hear where you're coming from, but we've had Friendship is Magic for 10 years. Is there more that could have been done? Absolutely. Am I curious to see what other writers and creators will do with this new series? Cautiously, yeah. Enjoy the enjoyable parts and let the rest fade away.

When a hegemon collapses, the other powers don't go with it, they feast on its carcass and grow fat.

Head Canon Approved!

We shouldn't and must not become what Faust feared. G5 deserves a chance.

Besides, plenty of shows got a Happy Ending Override and the sequels turned out just as good. Sometimes even better.

You know, it would be beautiful if Friendship Is Magic and the Bronies got their own museum. We truly did create something special.

This was lovely read.

Very beautiful piece, and painfully meta. But in a good way, as we all have to give up our world for the next generation and let them take their piace.

The feels Re making me feel like a pretzel.

or how Discord finally popped the question to Fluttershy.

...really?

…Dude, we've been over this time and time again. You don't get permission to be a jerk just because you don't like the ships the author uses.

(BTW, great story, Pen!)

10866186
i'm not being a jerk
but if you really want me to be one let me get revved up

10866236
Well, I'm sorry if you typing "...really? :ajbemused:" gave me the wrong impression.

10866256
that's me being dismissive and annoyed

10866260
…Because the author made the briefest of asides about a ship you aren't a fan of?

Being "dismissive and annoyed" towards the author over such a minuscule detail is a bit jerkish, man.

EDIT: I feel like I'm over-escalating this situation. I'm sorry about that. Just… please try not to be rude about this sort of thing in the future, okay?

10866260
Okay, and why are you being dismissive and annoyed?

This was nice, a story with a lot of reflection of the past and the world-changing around them.

...or how Discord finally popped the question to Fluttershy. But someday, I won’t be able to do that.”

Personally, I could never see Discord "popping the question", in my mind it's Fluttershy that does that, she's the one who wanted to marry him and he had no clue on romance when it was Big Mac's plan to propose.

I'm glad you all enjoyed the story!

Eh, I ship it, and I think that's how it'd play out. No hard feelings if you don't like the ship--it's further from being canon than some of the other more likely pairings. I intensely dislike all the Twilight x Celestia/Luna pairings, so I don't hold it against people when I hear they're not a Fluttercord fan.

10866287

I hear you. It'd show character growth on Fluttershy's part to be assertive and state openly what she wants. However, it's more meaningful and romantic to me for Discord to reach the point where he wants to make that commitment, even if Fluttershy is content without it.

That was beautiful, but now I'm sad....

10866352
Thank you. There is sadness, but there's also immense joy and hope--even at the end of it all.

This was a bit sad but a little bittersweet too. Spike and Ember reflecting on old memories together and how the world was changing was sad, but the small implications of them talking about each other and possibly them getting together was my favorite part. Especially since I openly admit I am a hardcore Spike x Ember shipper.

10867031
Exactly what I was going for. The inspiration for the story was the somewhat mundane realization that the world becomes less recognizable as we age, if we don't accept the changes as they come. I knew those two would be able to bond over that melancholy thought, and I went from there.

So many ghosts of memories passed. :fluttercry:

10866011
And it's not like the next generation can't also enjoy what we created.

For Auld Lang Syne...if I got it correctly. We come, we go. Excellent story and coverage...happy Spike gets that good ending.

10868035
Same. We didn't get much for Spike at the end of the show, so it's a gap I'm happy to speculate on.

This one’s a thinker.

I liked that assertion that Ember made at the end, “You can’t change the past.” Of course we’re going to focus on our mistakes, because they’re easier to remember. But when you can’t change the past, you try your damndest to change the future and live in the present. It’s the best anyone can do, really.

A very good story, I have to say.

10868710
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Spike and Ember discussing about what's going on in future Equestria, reminds me of the future world & Republic City in Avatar: Legend of Korra. Everything feeling so "industrial" and "modern", it felt so weird and unfamiliar from their predecessors. But I guess that's the point of life; all we can do is keep moving forward.
It was a great story to read. Especially with the bits of Spember in it.:moustache:

Nice one. Short, but powerful.
