Gradually, she begins to realize that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.
There's three books in all plus four novellas and two sequel books. Admittedly the first book is a bit slow but by the second and third book it really picks up.

Its been AGES since I read the Selection so I can't really remember everything that happens in the story, but some parts and characters stick out in my memories as I'm reading.

You know it hadn't really occurred to me before as I understood why she wouldn't be part of the selection but... where is Rainbow Dash? It was kind of nagging me and then when the Elite was announced it really dawned on me that she hasn't been in this story at all. Is she coming in later or just not part of the story at all?
