This story is a sequel to Portent

"You know," Sugar Belle began, looking into her son's eyes, "One of these days I'm not gonna wake up when you shake me."

A fantastic read, dementia truly is a scary thing. I love the caretaker references.

This is so bittersweet that it truly captivates the emotions of the piece. Being a caregiver myself, I knew right away where this piece was going, but I think you handled it in such a refined way, that any reader should be able to pick it up, even if they are unaware of what Dementia is. It is truly a piece that is both sad, and heart warming in it's prose, a really solid one shot, and an excellent piece of writing. Keep being awesome.

Here's the thing, in case any readers are unfamiliar with it

The story does a good job of capturing the feeling of it in a short window.

I'M AT WORK. I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO BE CRYING RIGHT NOW.

This was a really sweet story. Though wow, I must be an idiot, because I didn't see anything about dementia in this story, even looking over it again. It is just the bit where Sterling says it's Sugar's birthday?

Wait, I’m a little confused about what happened.

Wait, this was supposed to be about dementia? It seemed more about just aging in general, and the end of aging, death, than dementia. Of course, I was taking Sugar Belle's visions seriously, as parts of the nightscape where the boundaries between dream and death thin. I don't know why, but the idea that they were just hallucinations never crossed my mind.

“An Empty Bliss Beyond This World” is an art project by Leyland Kirby that uses music to communicate the feelings of Dementia. I’m almost certain in somewhat inspired this story, and there’s clear references to it all over. I’d recommend doing more research into it as it’s highly interesting and a good listen.

Soooo for everyone's interest I thought I'd note what was kinda going into this story!
Now take all this as simply my take, I believe in death of the author so if this story is about dementia to a reader, then that's fine, just as fine if it isn't to another reader

I actually didn't intend to write Sugar Belle as having dementia here. I've written fics more in that kind of vein, but this piece was more inspired by the themes and aesthetics of The Caretaker's album as opposed to the specific concepts. This story was more personally inspired by themes of degradation, inspired by the breakdown of sounds that plague the deterioration meant to convey the deterioration of a mind and memory. This was more about the deterioration of life.
Coupled with the ballroom aesthetics that inspire their destination, and the use of Caretaker inspiring the role SB's son has allowed himself to inhabit.

Thanks both for your interest and I'm glad you enjoyed the fic :)

I really liked this story! I always feel that sadness when thinking about old age...
Maybe later I'll do a translation into Spanish.
