The feels...the feels.
The only negative thing about the finale is that after the season premiere I was such a Starlight/Diamond shipper and now they've given her an old boyfriend.
More than anything I'm amazed at how this show has made me be able to forgive a character I so utterly despised. Seriously, Starlight was my most hated character in all of MLP, if not all of fiction, for a while.
You captured what it would really be like trying to make amends with those she oppressed. Friendship is Magic indeed.
Now, on to the sequel.
Now this would have fit perfect in the finale if not for time constraints.
Good job, you made me tear up just a bit.

Hmm. I'm not sure I buy the residents of Our Town using Starlight Glimmer's Cutie Mark as their symbol. Forgiving her once she admitted to her mistakes, sure. But after she lied to them for so long, I kinda doubt they'd want anything to do with her once she was gone.
Beyond that, this was a very interesting take on Starlight's return to Our Town. It's sweet, everything that was said needed to be said, and hey, it leads into your next story quite nicely. However, that one detail I mentioned above is kinda holding the whole thing back. Or maybe that's just me. Either way, nicely done.

6705609 It's happened so many times now though! Before Starlight it was Diamond Tiara, then Gilda, and the Sirens, Sunset, Discord, Trixie, and even Luna way back in episode two! I think this is a show about forgiveness and redemption almost as much as it's about friendship.

We kinda sorta got it in the Season 6 finale, but yeah, I wish they gave more time to her redemption than all the alternate timelines we got in the time travel battle.

I would think all the town's ponies have a tragic backstory. It's how individuals usually get into cults, by having their lives devastated and someone like Starlight finding them when they are vulnerable. Those that hated their cutie marks and felt they had nopony to depend on.

I did a oneshot on Double Diamond. Didn't think of any of the others, but yeah, great theory, I'm sure everypony had their reasons for accepting Starlight's methods.

If you have an identity that you feel comfortable with, a passion you love, a community and family that you can fall back on and a group of friends that you trust then you are not likely to join a cult.
Cults are mainly about manipulating people who are in a vulnerable position. Who have suffered massive loss and have no one to rely on to comfort them. It would also make Starlight make despicable in the past as she would have actively sought out ponies being sad and lonely and instead of helping them she would further those emotions and use them against them.
It was the big mistake of Starlight to try to convert the mane 6 to her cult as they didn't fulfill these circumstances. They had a strong friendship, a strong family and community to fall back on and they loved what they were doing and felt comfortable with their identity. They didn't have any of the vulnerabilities that makes people join a cult. So she was trying to brute force it which as usual failed miserably.
