1) Ash had retained a lot of things from his own dimension, such as his memories and Pokemon. And if I do remember correctly, Ash could harness the power of Aura, so it passed on into his new body. Therefore, it was triggered while he was attempting to protect someone he wanted to help, and...well you saw how that went down. I believe Ash would have used Aura Sphere in the same manner he would've as a Pokemon in his old dimension would, but since he was a human there, he found it nigh impossible to use the ability. But when he came to Equestria, I assume some of his Aura powers were released and activated by whoever brought him there.
and 2) I had already put this story first on Fanfiction.net and I had a poll there. Aura Sphere won by quite a lot, in fact. I was surprised.

Also, you didn't say anything about Ash's journey through Unova; I know it hasn't ended yet and we don't know how it will end, but you should still acknowledge that it had happened by this point.
