It was a bit difficult to write about Sunset's childhood without knowing basically anything about it, though.

While I tend to agree with RoyalBardofCanterlot on the bruises thing, I do understand quite clearly that this was not meant as abuse, and that the punishment was more intense than in foalhood because of her age and the nature of her actions. Plus, she literally asked for it.

In re-reading, why was Celestia upset by the thought of Sunny having a boyfriend? Or is she upset that Sunny didn't tell her?

It was a bit of a throwaway line about Celestia acting a bit too motherly towards Sunset, being surprised neither her nor Twilight had told her about something like that, or bringing someone through the portal to Equestria.
