Many years after Luna's banishment, a secret network of ponies still remain loyal to the Lost Princess. They worship her as a goddess, a returning hero who will stamp out injustice, and reward the faithful who love the night.
Loyal cultists Night Light and Velvet, receive word of a prophecy that their second child will be instrumental in the return of Nightmare Moon, so they leave Canterlot behind, and bring their foals to a secret colony, deep within the Everfree with only one goal in mind: Keep Celestia from finding Twilight Sparkle, no matter what the cost.
Meanwhile, time is running out to find a bearer for the element of magic. Sunset Shimmer has disappeared, Sunburst isn't ready for the job, and Celestia can't bring herself to put her faith in shy, clever Moondancer, even though she might be Equestria's last hope.
A Friendship Is Magic AU in which Luna has a small band of followers, and that changes everything. Please don't discount this story just because of the pairings, but I've listed them below all the same.

In this AU, not unlike The Moon's Apprentice, Sunset Shimmer was Celestia's previous apprentice, a full generation older than Twilight. We don't even know if canon Sunset is much older, because the mirror Equestria seems to make everyone a pre-teen primate.

That's precisely what I was thinking. Besides, I didn't want to mention this earlier because of spoilers, but... we don't actually know if Sunburst is really Sunset's kid. All Celestia knows is that Sunset was pregnant, and had a child, and Sunburst bears a physical resemblance. From what we know so far, the timeline might not even match up.
I feel I've at least done a passing job in making Celestia an unreliable narrator, especially where ponies she loves are concerned. (Still thinking she can change Luna, ignoring Cadance, feeling guilty about Sunset, etc.)

This chapter also talks about the tribalism toward earth ponies. Given the way we saw the tribes fighting at Hearth's Warming, and the way Ponyville first treated Zecora, I think it's fair to say that this kind of bigotry is possible in the mlp universe.

On a more serious note, thanks for that long comment! I really wanted to write Celestia as not a tyrant, or a fool, but a well-meaning ruler with an attitude which was too stubborn and laissez faire for her society, and I'm glad that came across to you.
I've got to say that I'm very much enjoying this story. I don't know where this is heading confrontation wise, but I have a fun faux prophecy that I've had in my mind for awhile now.
"If Love and Night cannot convince the Day to give up her stubborn ways, then the Day shall break and all of Equestria will burn."
Again just something I've had bouncing around in my mind for a few weeks now and is not to be taken seriously.

That's a very relevant prophecy to this story, and I'm inwardly chuckling because I love the double meanings and intrigue (the day will break). Unfortunately, in this tale, it will take a lot for Celestia to see the error of her ways.
