This story is a sequel to Best Friends, Forever

Twilight Sparkle and Sunset Shimmer go on their first date in almost 20 years.

It defies several of Twilight's expectations.

A very nice sequel to an already great one-shot.

There aren't enough heart emoticons in the world. As adorable as it is sprinkled with intriguing world developments. I just hope this isn't winding up for a tragic third act.

That was nice.

Wonderful timing! Posted while I was reading the first!

Veg loving.

Hnngh, my heart. The warm fuzzies are laying siege!

I already had too much sweets today. More like this and I'll need insulin.:raritystarry:

That was adorable.

Dawww, that was sweet.

By god I hope not, but I have a feeling that's where this is going...

This historic agreement, along with serving as the first known official declaration of alliance between two Equestrias

Using a revolutionary material invented by Equestria's Rarity

The world around her blurred again, blurred amidst all the bolded subject lines, the incoming message count, the backlogged animated texts, the weight ofall the people asking for her time.

Bookish you're writing yourself into your stories again

I'm in every story I write. :D

And that's why they're so warm and friendly!

And as long as I'm nitpicking logic errors, if the implication is that this is supposed to be the same location as their first date, then it can't also be the original Sugarcube Corner.

Nah, accounted for that one, at least :D First story is indeed SCC#2 from Coinky-Dink world, this is one is the SCC #1 on the corner from the original movies. The "first date" here is more of a poetic designation because they're married n' stuff.

A'ight. Just struck me as an odd choice to shift the scene in such a slight way given all the other explicit parallels with the first story.

OH GOD NO
No, wait, Bookish Delight doesn't do tragedies, just adorably sweet happy stories with the occasional hurt/comforts that still have happy endings. Right?

It’s like Meet the Robinsons, minus the time travel and with romance. Or it’s Phineas and Ferb’s future, but the dimensions stayed connected. Or it’s like Back to the Future Part 2, minus the travel and with cuter romance. Or it’s...

Bookish has since confirmed that there is no tragic third act planned.

Hmm, so we've gone from modern day to The Jetsons in a few decades. That's... pretty impressive. Not that Sunset and Twilight aren't up to the task, but still...

Only thing I'm not sold on is the Corner being declared a historical site (probably doesn't warrant a spoiler but it's as well to be careful). I'm sure it's a nice place but, unless it was in some way intergral to this future coming about, I don't know if I buy that. Of course, it could just be that Applejack and everyone on the council went there a lot and are doing this simply because they can. In which case... fair play to them, I guess.

Oh, and the Sunlight was absolutely adorable... as if that needed pointing out.

Cute and lovely! Great job showing how hyperactive Twilight's mind still is, and how much she needed this little break. Sunset knows how to treat her Purple Smart properly.

I am about 2000% certain this is the case. Since they all have probably contributed to the COLOSSAL paradigm shift, they can pretty much say "Eeyup, historical," and no one would argue the point. If'n they know what's good for 'em, anywho. :ajsmug:

This was so adorable. Thanks for this and the previous story.

It’s a diner where several of the most influential people of their generation all hung out at and/or worked at. Heck, for all we know, some of the groundbreaking stuff could have been done or discovered there. It’s also the location of the first date of the first inter-dimensional romance. It’s got some historical value, if you squint enough.

I'll admit. That was cool. Where did the picture come from anyway?

PROTIP: adding "anime" to image searches for (retro)futuristic/sci-fi/neon cities will unlock the really serious shit. :D

Another arrow to the soul from Bookish.

Just wow.

good story loved it and it was cute theo 2 things

1. i cant see human rainbow going into sports as a career when music is her real passion

2. why would a school principle become the president it really dont line up with human celestias love of students

OK, before anything else, can I just say how perfectly Bookish it is of you to have this huge, cross-dimensional, world-redefining event happen off-screen and serve much more as the narrative justification for the aesthetic elements of a Fluffy Love Story than actually be a driving plot?  That's no slight, either; I sincerely love this aspect of the story to death. XD
Mind you, you use that aspect very well not only to flavor the story (Spike the A.I. especially strikes me as a keenly well-played element there, especially for how it feeds pretty directly into the bigger emotional dynamics at play), but indeed to set up its premise.  The whole idea here, after all, is about what it means to grow up together, and what does and doesn't change along the way; the myriad pressures that inevitably come with adulthood, in other words, are the key edge of the conflict here, and so it is only natural to see what growing up looks like in a multiverse as fantastical as this one.
Perhaps more importantly, though, the grandiosity of the framing device puts into much sharper relief how grounded and soft the true stakes and heart of the story actually are.  Revisiting those memories...looking back at the people we were while celebrating the people we are and contemplating the people we can yet become...it's hardly as heavy as all that, but that thread feels present nonetheless.  You draw your parallels well (the drinks and the War of Corny Romance Lines especially), but never overplay them, especially since we are plugged much more directly into Twilight's perspective this time around (itself a parallel of sorts, as the previous story rather favored Sunset's point of view).  The result is that, even as we revisit story beats and emotional moments from the first story, it never feels like mere rote, hollow repetition, but rather a purposeful re-examination of what those moments meant then and can still mean now.  It is, in other words, very much the kind of refreshing re-connection to those concepts that Twilight herself experiences over the course of the story, one of the more unique uses of narrative structure I've seen you really play with.
And it also highlights what remains the strongest suit of both stories: the radiant warmth that glows off of this couple in every moment, in every way. Here too you balance the parallels to the previous story with the slight gradations of both characters now that time has passed and their relationship has grown. The same easy-going trust and intimacy, the same playful push-and-pull teasing, and yet there is a more concrete understanding on Sunset's part about what caring for Twilight means in a world that demands so much of her attention, and there is a stronger feeling on Twilight's part that she can trust and depend on Sunset, always. And, as before, simply watching you let that dynamic unfold, only now with a keen reminder that its strength will carry the both of them through troubled and trying times, is just the most sincere kind of joy to read.

That's honestly the best way to do worldbuilding, in my opinion. Don't just exposit what your setting looks like, instead have it come up tangentially like this, framing your story. Bonus points if you can do it right and not make it seem like certain tidbits only come up in the dialogue to add to the worldbuilding. but actually have it sound like a thing the characters would actually say - something that I think was managed pretty well here.

8727677
Agreed on all counts. ^_^

This is a nearly perfect sequel to the original.

Initially, I thought there was a bit too much focus on the world building, and not enough on Twilight and Sunset. I was starting to find it distracting, and I had my doubts that it would actually pay off in a short story like this. Of course there was a purpose, since the strongest theme in this story was of change, and of things that resist change.

Tackling how things have changed is a great way to tie this story to the previous, as even when they were younger, Twilight noticed how people (and ponies) are resistant to change. It was one of Twilight's thoughts that stuck out to me in *Best Friends, Forever,* because it was an idea that simply served as a segue from one thought to the next, never to be explored. It felt like a loose end when I read it, and now it feels more like it was left dangling specifically to set up the sequel. Either way, it's fitting that Sugarcube Corner, the inspiration for Twilight's comment about how people can be resistant to change, became the symbol for resistance to change in this story. Having Sugarcube Corner sit unchanged in a drastically changed world both paralleled and intensified the ways in which Twilight and Sunset's relationship has both changed and remained the same.

I should probably mention that Twilight and Sunset's banter was also a believable extension of their relationship in the first story, but that goes without saying. The structure is the real star of the show here. The only complaint I have is that the exposition in the beginning could probably stand to be trimmed slightly, but it's otherwise flawless by my reckoning.

Cheers!

The two versions of Equestria working together in all aspects? That is something I'd really love to see.

Also, every bit of SciSet in this story is so passionate and somehow thrill-bringing. Very nice work.

CHANGED MY MIND THIS THE CUTEST SHIT I EVER SEEN

Took me forever and a half, but I got around to reading. The background is close to what I say pretty much constantly; cards played right, Sci-Twi can be the J. Robert Oppenheimer of the thaum.
Plus, Equestria is just chock full of stuff to fuel glittertech like gemstones for the manufacture of superconductors.

Oh, and the shipping was cute and the characters were spot on. But to paraphrase Yahtzee, that's like saying water is wet. You don't really get an award for that anymore Booky, it's expected.

This was sweet. I like Sci-Twi and Sunset taking the time to just be with each other.

This was adorable and a fine follow up to the former. However, I do think I prefer the first story's atmosphere, both emotionally and setting-wise. The cover art had me thinking the sleek sci-fi city would be used to represent a metaphor of the relationship or tying into Sci-Twi talking about her hopes and dreams for the future on the date while her bacon wife listens. I didn't expect actual sci-fi on a story lacking the sci-fi tag. Your development of their relationship from girlfriends to wives was one that was reflected nicely, but the setting lent an emotional distance I felt reading this that I couldn't cross fully due to the setting not feeling like a sleek introduction of a romantic future... but, well, a big sci-fi setting.

Thank you for writing these wholesome stories, though. I did enjoy them.

This was so bloody beautiful. Many future fanfics I've seen of the Rainbooms had them fall apart after HS, but you've managed to keep them together and happy, as well as have them set in a utopistic world as opposed to just their dull standard life without magic + technology. I'd rate this a easy 10/10 for how heartwarming it is.

Some thoughts:

1) In EQG, Celestia is a principle, so it just noggals me that she rose to President in only 20 years from a superintendent position. Most presidents need name recognition, time behind a governing position, or a boat load of money to be noticed to run for President

2) I'd like to direct your attention to another fic I remember, called I Don't Need Magic. If you read it, it contradicts with your story initially, what with Twilight hating Sunset and all (op, mild spoilers but they're told to you at the start so not that much), but because this takes place 20 yrs in the future, and IDNM takes place 15 yrs, it would be a cool thought to have a sort of spin off of this fic as their future. Just a little idea I had in my mind that I wanted to share :twilightsheepish:

In an instant, Twilight's frustration was forgotten. She sighed, her heart rate slowing, her jaw loosening, her mind recalling memories. Memories of Sunset kissing her lips before, in so many places.

kisses sure do fix and help stressful moments if you ask me. :ajsmug:

"Will... will it?" Twilight suddenly heard herself ask, in a high, pleading voice, as if she were twenty years younger again. She couldn't physically see her wife, but she'd be damned if Sunset's younger self, back in that hot blue outfit and leather jacket from when the two had first met, weren't sitting in front of her right now, clear as day.

I'd so love that!!! :pinkiehappy:

Twilight hadn't gotten up the nerve to tell Sunset just how much she'd missed that outfit, yet. But until she did, she was just fine with seeing it whenever she closed her eyes—or in this case, when they were being closed for her.

It happens to be one of my top 5 fav outfits sunset had in eqg.

"That'll matter eventually. Not now. Please," she said through another long, desperate gasp, squeezing Sunset even closer. "Just... please... I missed you. I missed you lots. "

Kinda reminds me of another couple that went through the same thing in a tv show I watch.

"Yep," Sunset said. "I had that reaction when Applejack emailed me the pictures. She lobbied to have Sugarcube Corner declared a historical landmark, and the rest of the city council agreed in seconds. To say nothing of the citizenry. 'Course, part of that bargain meant keeping the retro vibe."

How nice of them.

To heck with the blue-dress fantasy—Sunset still looked as beautiful as the day they'd met, even with life having caused her to swap out her black leather jacket for a cardigan of the same hue. She would have been absolutely gorgeous even if all the magic infused into the both of them over the years hadn't slowed their aging processes to roughly half speed by Twilight's calculations.

That's interesting. :applejackunsure:

Turning around more, Sunset nibbled Twilight's neck again. Twilight squirmed, alternating between giggles and mewls. "Come on, Sunny, you're gonna get us thrown out of here!"

Lol :rainbowlaugh:

Twilight's face flushed hot. She laughed her way through it. "Well, it does sound silly. Even kids don't use that slang anymore." She sighed. "But more to the point: that's every day for me now. And I'm betting it is for you too. You know what I like now? Getting away from that when I need to, and just being with my best friend. Who I can do this to." She steered her face towards Sunset's, and the two shared a long, deep, cathartic kiss.

Awwww.
