I always put her at about Rarity's age? I think in one of the flashbacks you see Cheerilee as a foal in Rara's class, and I always had Rarity as maybe a year or so older than the other girls. I know there's a lot of theory craft around this though.

OK, I see how you might not like that. People probably feel that estrus smell is different - a raw animalistic smell would be unmistakable for sure.
In my head-canon the smell is definitely powerful, but when perceived by a stallion they tend to think it smells great, and that it has overtones or undertones of other smells that might be related to the colorful pone emitting the smell.
