I know this is an EXTREMELY late response, but I just stumbled upon this old comment, and I wanted to reply.
Reference means you say something in a work that is supposed to remind you of a certain thing in another work. For example, in Twilight's Kingdom, when the princesses talk about Cerberus leaving his gates, it's a reference to It's About Time, where that happened.
If you mean what it's a reference to, I wondered if it was a reference to My Little Dashie, before I realized Dashie was a popular endearing name for Rainbow.
