If you are going for the imperative here, it would be "Sterbt, alle von euch, sterbt!" And - depending on how high Dim's Germane level is - a more elegant, aristocratic translation of "Die, all of you, die!" would be "Sterbt, ihr alle, sterbt!".
8136358 That comes out as 'Die, you all, die' Not sure which has the high or low emphasis on 'die' as if just saying it as a matter of fact or 'you will DIE!!, hard to remember now. Was taught Old High German by the rels and today's Std dialect at High school some 30 + years ago, I think I have it a bit mixed up on some words.
8136571 She might be right on 'sterbt', that might be the hard emphasis but the middle bit should stand I think. edit tried ringing my dad and asking but he rarely speaks it any more and is a bit rusty. what can I say, he's 83.
Several people brought up a point I was thinking about with Twilight doing the same things. Of course Dim is willing to cross the line and use dark magic.
Not sure Twilight would use melting metal around some of the foals she teaches that could be asking for disaster. Can you see how readily Sumac would be able to copy teh melt metal spell
8136955 its a line that Dim seems to cross more readily than Twilight. Didn't mean to imply Dim used dark magic in this chapter though some are likely to accuse him of that
8136978 hm that is a clear and readily apparent danger, it can be taught quite easily and in a spectacular manner. Other magics can be more difficult to properly address.
I was going to pose a question to Dim: " Wot you gon do now, Vizard?" but it looks like the answer will either be *fall over dead* or something like simply ignoring the question altogether and disappearing from sight. Poor Dim
And then we think back on that spell incantation. Damnit Luna Me thinks much boredom would be involved when coming up with an incantation like that. Or just laughter
8136565 8136571 Sorry, I'm late to the party. That I started. Heh. Time zones and stuff.
"Alle von euch" is a correct word for word translation for "all of you", though in the context of a battle cry, it sounds clunky. At least to me as a native speaker. "ihr alle" is shorter, to the point. Something us Germans like. Efficiency and whatnot.
8137880 Fair enough, I'm used to the old ways. I wish they did that with their hard to remember part numbers in the auto industry. A set of common old ignition points in Bosch German catalogue is 1 237 013 044 here in Australia it's GB534. My ancestors seem to love long drawn out numbering systems *sigh*
8137565 dim must be the spiritual successor to Bucky! <3
The problem with many Unicorns is that they always think that Bigger and/or Flashier = Better, which is simply not always the case. Bigger and flashier means NOTHING if you cannot keep your magic up to fight all of your enemies. Furthermore, when you come up against someone with stronger magic, all those big flashy powerful spells, will typically not save you.
For that you need the more simple utilitarian spells. You need trickery and deception. For when you are in a battle to the death, it matters that you use all resources, because as we saw, even a simple children's prank spell can be quite powerful and useful.
There was no cruelty in his actions—the time for fighting was over—and he felt no malice towards those he dispatched. This was a job, a job like any other, and Dim was a consummate professional.
No. You do not get to evade your motivations like this. These actions were not a job anyone hired you for, nor were they without malice. Don't go retreating like that.
Could you believe I was slightly excited when he decided to defend the town? I am no longer.
It seems like later this chapter he is accepting the gravity of what he did, though.

Ahh that's better.
I love Dim's bad-assery...i think you get a kick out of writing about unicorn cleverness... (read: Bucky)

Oh man, nice chapter. I'm interested in seeing what happens next.

Trauer. German for "mourning".
Poor Cadence...
8136384
Hence the title for the chapter.
During that fight I had this playing in the background
8136358 That comes out as 'Die, you all, die' Not sure which has the high or low emphasis on 'die' as if just saying it as a matter of fact or 'you will DIE!!, hard to remember now. 8136565
So what should it be?
8136571 She might be right on 'sterbt', that might be the hard emphasis but the middle bit should stand I think.
edit tried ringing my dad and asking but he rarely speaks it any more and is a bit rusty. what can I say, he's 83.
I love the dark tones this story has.
Secession or rebellion, rather than succession.
Reading the battle scene I wondered "could Twilight Sparkle do this?" And I concluded "Yes. But she wouldn't."
8136879
Oh, Twilight could do all of these things. In theory.
Melting metal? That's fine. Useful even. Great to use in a classroom setting to teach foals science.
Melting metal while it is still being worn by a pony?
10/10
Shouldn't this be "secession"?
Several people brought up a point I was thinking about with Twilight doing the same things. Of course Dim is willing to cross the line and use dark magic.

Not one single act of dark magic was used in this chapter.
Twilight has, in fact, used dark magic.
8136955 its a line that Dim seems to cross more readily than Twilight. Didn't mean to imply Dim used dark magic in this chapter though some are likely to accuse him of that
8136948
So, the foals in the metal smithing classes must remain woefully ignorant?
8136973 I think its more of waiting till they are old enough to understand the dangers
8136978 hm that is a clear and readily apparent danger, it can be taught quite easily and in a spectacular manner. Other magics can be more difficult to properly address.
Power...overwhelming?
I was going to pose a question to Dim: " Wot you gon do now, Vizard?" but it looks like the answer will either be *fall over dead* or something like simply ignoring the question altogether and disappearing from sight. Poor Dim

... this reminds me so much of Bucky. And damn, poor Cadence,
Secession is dirty business. Never expect to get away without a fight.

8136435 The part of the movie I least wished to be reminded of. I cringe whenever I watch it.
Love the movie. Hate this scene.
It's so appropriate.
Maybe I'm just an asshole, but the possibility that Cadence was upset by Dim's actions made me smile.
Edit: I'm just an asshole.
Is this the first time Cadence has witnessed a battle-mage without scruples?
8140384
Yes.
8140403
That makes this experience a good lesson for Cadence.
I hope her aunts are up to the task of helping her through the lingering horror.
That was quite the impressive dirge.

Holy shit this chapter. The slaughter...
