Oh, Mark doesn't exactly believe in the bible/God whatever but for him it is a touchstone to his past life - one that he increasingly is comfortable leaving behind. He finds the prayers reassuring and in moments of self doubt they help him.

is this a good story? the simple answer is yes.
the more completed answer is. it flows rather well has a good plot line and is a vary good slice of life kind of story.
the way you are using religion to show the inner battle of over coming human up bringing's starts out good , but, this is a personal battle raging with in Mark. does it work yes but you may have wanted to show it more on a personal level.
as of right now I have not voted as I am holding my vote to see how the story hold together over he long hall.
