During basic training on the rifle range there is always some idiot that tries to turn around with the weapon in his hands (procedure is to put it down facing).
Snipers are covered by the spotter. The spotter has a assault rifle with scope. The sniper also has a pistol 3x scope. If they were forced to defend a close attack, first they screwed up to be detected or choose the wrong approach low-crawl to even get that close. If forced, the spotter uses the assault rifle, and the sniper the pistol to try to disengage and escape.
