This is partly an expression of the fact that for most of the time I was writing it, I had no idea how to end the story, so joked about them all just dying in the end. I don't usually embark on a story without knowing where it's going, but did this time.

The price of rope is quite variable based on the thickness and quality of the material it's made from. For the purposes Rarity had in mind, she would have chosen a medium-thickness rope made out of a very soft, smooth material. She wouldn't have wanted to use something cheap and rough like jute. Given all that, I don't think one bit per yard is unreasonable.
6721400 it was a joke. I figured as much, I just am used to using 1/4 in nylon ropes at 100 ft. for scientific purposes and that stuff is around 0.38 cents per yard....must be some high quality stuff if it's a bit for a yard. Mainly it's a joke.

I down voted this. Rarity is not into public degrading other ponies. Here entire being is about helping them feel beutiful. This is why she loves making and selling dresses.

The story only really works with an OC. At the beginning, the species of the character is not explicitly mentioned, and it's possible to believe she's really a cat. If I'd used, say, Fluttershy, the reveal that Rarity's pet is actually a pony would have less impact.

6721429 even the 1/2" climbing rope isn't much more than 60 cents a yard. Heck, a 1 yard 2" nylon tow-rope is only $3, with the steel hooks attached.
And 1/8" parachute cord is even cheaper. 200 yards for $10, and you can braid it into 1/4", which gives 50 yards of fairly comfortable line (4 strand braid) for that same price.
And properly braided Jute isn't even all that bad unless it's tied too loosely. 1/2" twisted line is 40 cents a yard at Home Depot, and comes with a bulk discount if you purchase more than 20 yards (which you will, because it breaks and wears out fast).
