This story is a sequel to Fear Me, for My Name is Twaith!
For a woman of science, intellect, and knowledge, isn't it a little strange that Twilight would use a device that picks up ghosts, or any sort of supernatural entity? Especially when ghosts weren't something even the magical, talking unicorn, Twilight Sparkle, didn't believe in?
Of course, most would consider a wraith and Cthulhu to be strong evidence to become a believer.
Side story for the Twaith universe. Reading it isn't ABSOLUTELY necessary, but it will help to understand some of the jokes.
Also, crossover tag is there for a cameo appearance by Beerus and Whis from Dragonball Z in the beginning.

A spectrometer is used to analyse the types of gases present in a sample.
But I understand how you got that wrong, withspectre meaning[a type of] ghost, and -meter meaning measure.
Or maybe that was intentional and I'm just wasting my time...

A spectrometer measures a 'spectrum' of something. The originals were developed to study light, breaking white light into its colored constituents (color spectrum) and I assume the name was applied to any device that takes a single sample of something (light, gas, etc) and uses some means to separate it into it's constituent parts.
Hmm, interesting way for her to get into magic. And that last line?

6478847 To be honest, yes, it's my screw up. However it sounds so close to, as Thelovedandlost put it, spectre, that when I heard it in the movie, it made no sense. However, as at least stated by what Wikipedia says, it does measure intensity of energy as well. If calibrated right, it could aim for magical energy, which is what I always assumed the one in the movie did.
