The narration is particularly wordy, but it becomes jarring only when you write things along the lines of 'the alicorn' or 'the princess' when pronouns or nouns would be enough. And referring to the moon as 'Luna's cosmic pearl' sounds... weird.
You understand how said tags work, which is always an appreciated thing.
I hope you'll tell us why Celestia allowed less powerful unicorns into the library areas forbidden to Sunset Shimmer.
I'd say Sunset Shimmer was still a student more than ten years ago though, since Twilight became Celestia's new student when she was a child and is more or less an adult at the beginning of the show.
I liked these lines;

I will try to go into more detail later on in the story about Celestia's reason for keeping Sunset out of the archives.

One tip I can give you is to not upload the chapter you've just finished writing right away and instead wait a few days to come back to it with fresh eyes. It should allow you to spot a few typos.

When I read that Celestia would bring earth ponies with her, I blanched in absolute dread as I imagined Pinkie Pie ruining this story for me. But thankfully it's six guards instead. I wonder if they'll have red shirts on the other side of the mirror.
If Sunset Shimmer left three years ago, it means that Celestia already had Twilight as a student, since I doubt she went from child to young adult in three years. I always guessed time in the mirror universe didn't pass at the same speed as in Equestria. There's also the problem of Twilight never knowing Celestia had another student, but that's more because she didn't exist in the writers' minds before Equestria Girls, much like Cadance and Shining Armor who aren't mentioned before the marriage.
Speaking of whom, I'm glad Shining Armor isn't going with Celestia. He's boring.
I was wondering whether this story happened before or after Equestria Girls, but now I'm pretty sure that's before since Celestia has no news of the human world. I wonder if it's even the same time as the beginning of the movie, as the mirror isn't in the crystal empire.

I am operating under the notion that Twilight did know about Sunset, and Celestia's brief exposition dump was for the sake of Twilights' friends. As for what to expect, do not worry, there will be no zombies in this fic. As fun as they can be I think Celestia already has enough to deal with. . . and, sorry to disappoint, but there will be no make out sessions here. Given what's going to come, it would be kind of awkward.
And yes, this does take place during the same time period as the first movie.

Hmm, rather curious. Given Luna is in this chapter this has to take place after FIM episodes 1 and 2, but otherwise there's very little indication if the events of the mirror portal opening take place after Twilight becomes a princess, or even if Twilight became a Princess.
Looks like Celestia herself is going to throw everything aside and make her way to the world on the other side, I guess?

6610665 I have been working on this story off and on for the last few weeks. It's just that sometimes as I am working on one story I need a break from to recharge the batteries by working on others. That way when I do return to this one, I'm doing out of enthusiasm and pleasure rather than obligation. I find that my stories tend to be better that way.

I had already previously stated in the comments during a conversation with Knight-of-Raven that there would be no zombies in this story. I will admit that they can be fun to have, but no, no zombies.
The real culprit is, at the same time both much worse, and much more heartbreaking.

Well, this is definitely interesting so far, I just hope that it is not a completely hopeless story. I like dark and sad stories as long as there is some positive resolution. Anyway I will keep watching and see where this one goes.

In addition it is being held up by the fact that at the moment I am a little stuck at what to do at the moment. Now I already know how I want this to end, it's getting there that is the problem.

You'll want to go through this chapter again with a fine comb for editing. I notice several incorrect word choices, and a couple of sentences where it cuts off pre-emptively.
That said, pretty nice and legitimately terrifying, with Celestia following the standard slasher-flick heroine dogma of running off and not paying attention to wise words. I wonder if it's the whole world that's like this, or if a virus or whatever infected several cities and after a while the cities were nuked to attempt to kill off all live rather than risk the quarantine being broken. The dog's symptoms fit fairly neatly with moderate radiation poisoning over an extended period of time, though its death is more for narrative dramatic convenience than a realistic depiction of death from radiation. If it were nukes, they can't be anywhere close to the epicenter of where one was set off, though, or else they'd be seeing signs of the heat explosion set off from where the nuke would have hit such as warped infrastructure and cars.
"Look for me in the building with the shooting star on it."
Sunset, you idiot! If you've got time to make complete sentences, open with a greeting, close with a salutation, and even repeat yourself, you've got time to give actual useful information.
Maybe something like:
"Meteor Mall, 2nd Floor, North Side. Please Help. East of CHS, six blocks. Dying everywhere." And then if she's got more time, she might outline what Celestia (or whoever she sends) should bring and be ready for.
Even better, Sunset might try to make this journey herself instead of expecting a rescue party that Celestia would be entirely justified in not sending. At least two have died already for her sake.

Huh. Maybe it's a good thing that Celestia was being pursued by Pinkie Pie. After all, if she had the time to stick around in the cafeteria and actually look through the corpses, she might have found Sunset Shimmer's body (though whether it would have been in a state enough for Celestia to recognise her hair or whatever is a different question). Well, Pinkie Pie being alive also means potentially other people survived, including Sunny. Still, not looking good for Sunset Shimmer's survival,

Yet still no info about plague. Did local Twilight Sparkle experiment with magic stolen from the portal and try to infuse simplest creatures, bacteries or viruses with it? Magical plague seems to explain quite well why common cures failed totally and why Sunset Shimmer, sirens and Pinkie Pie (being Pinkie) were last survivors...
