Someone who writes words sometimes

E

In the week following the Cutie Mark Crusaders' return from the Appleoosa rodeo, Sweetie Belle has been helping Rarity to finish a dress order. Rarity, though very grateful for the help, doesn't think that Sweetie Belle is quite herself. Her concerns are cemented when Sweetie Belle declines the opportunity to go crusading. What could be troubling her? And what has she set in motion through her inaction?

5951920 Thanks! I don't think I made Twilight and Applejack do it wrong then. :twilightsheepish:

Lying never pays. Neither does leaving others ignorant.

They kept this from the CMC and not Spike?

5998612 Basically yes, but you're right that I've failed to make that clear in the narrative. :fluttershyouch: Sorry about that. I'll go back and do some editing to clarify the issue. Thanks for the comment!

In the news, the entire Smith family was found dead in their living room.
Only one man was seen entering or exiting that building before the gruesome discovery: John Jones. Further investigation revealed he had been seen entering and exiting through the side window into the room, wielding an axe... which subsequently showed signs of having been used.
To general disbelief, no arrests have been made, and John Jones is still free to come and go as he pleases.

Of course, I only left out two little important details.
One: the Smith family died of smoke inhalation.
Two: John Jones is a fireman.

Applejack and her friends chose to deliberately misinform the Crusaders for their OWN personal convenience. Blither about "not upsetting them" to the contrary--- they're sure as hell upset NOW. This has cost them vital TRUST out of fear of a transient WORRY.

6037996 I can't tell if this means you're annoyed by the story or not.

6038031 I'm a bit annoyed at APPLEJACK at this point.

Or rather maybe this overly common portrayal of her. It seems like the moment a fan hears "element of Honesty" they consider it a personal challenge to write her lying her ass off. Usually it's about paternity or maternity--- Applebloom is really her daughter, or she "adopted" a colt or filly who is actually hers, or is really a thestral/changeling/alicorn, or something along those lines that would have required the Element of Honesty to spend literally YEARS lying to everyone she knew, including her own family... when she can't even convincingly lie about a BIRTHDAY PARTY.

And then when confronted on this obvious preposterousness, the author half-asses some rationalization about how it isn't REALLY a lie...

Not saying it's bad here. This IS the sort of thing someone might do to keep a younger sibling from being hurt--- and yes, more or less it works here because somebody CALLS Applejack on the dishonesty, dammit. Just once or twice though I'd like to see Equestria's most honest pony insisting on being, you know, HONEST. Honesty isn't measured just by how someone's truthful, it's about how they tell the truth even when it hurts--- even when a lie would be more comfortable, or "safer", or "kinder." Because they know that lies cause ignorance and ignorance causes as much harm in life as wickedness if not more. (TL;DR :Lies always bite you in the ass.)

6038154 Thanks for taking the time to clarify your opinion, and for sticking with it this far! I definitely see your point. If you've come across so many stories where Applejack is lying then I understand why you're frustrated. I didn't realise so many stories portray her as such (haven't read many pony stories in general, being new to this area of the fandom). :applejackunsure:

6484450 Thanks! I can only hope you continue to enjoy the depiction. And thanks for reading the story, too!

Hope this story continues cause I'm liking it so far.

7045513 Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm glad you liked it. Unfortunately I'm not sure if I'm going to continue the story at this point - I'll do a blog post announcing that once I do know. :ajsleepy:
