Cereal Velocity should really be careful what he posts up on Equestria Daily. A one-shot of an Octavia story Cereal wanted to see written.

Octavia may be a gifted musician, but that doesn't mean she always liked her instrument. After all, what filly grows up wanting to play a huge contrabass?

I remember this back when it was first posted. A good little story that I enjoyed. Nice to see it here.

Which link. There are a few.

I think i saw a comic bout this once... Was this inspired by it or vice versa or are they completely unrelated

543341
This was written before Valcron's comic, but his comic is way funnier. I always laugh at the 2nd or 3rd page when Lil' Octavia makes :derpyderp2: face.

Imma read this in a little while. It looks good so im bookmarking it for the moment.

Great! Time to load the story, then get back to the hotelroom without internetconnection. :pinkiecrazy:

The link to EQD, this is the right link: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/06/story-changing-octaves.html
In the wrong link there is a slash too much at the ending.

This was one of the first stories I read from you  , first one about Octavia I ever read too, cant wait to see all your stories here on the site :scootangel:...specially ¨the big one¨ that shall not be named :rainbowlaugh:.

One of my favorite Octavia fics, glad to see it here.

I remember this story! INSTAFAVE!

The story was great, but I still wanna hear the music you were going to link to.

I haven't read this in forever and I still love it!

Great job, nice background story for Octavia. :scootangel:

The links are the blue-text in the middle of the story.

Error: Oct~~~a looked over the contrabass, letting her hoof gently caress the neck...

545685 Do I need a plug-in installed to see them?

546906
I don't think so. Still, to clarify what I said, they are literally in the middle of the story. Both links are placed as text in the story's text, and specifically both links can be found in the scene when young Octavia is taken to see the orchestra.

547363 oh, now I've found them. Thanks :D
Also, really nice choices there, they really fit the situation

Dammit, Pen Stroke, leave some views for us. :rainbowlaugh:

A touching story my friends. Very good.
It makes me long for the years in school when I played the Double Bass, I was a mediocre player at best but those were fun times.

Hello everyone from FIMFiction. I'd would like say that i'm a bit new here and enjoying reading people's fan fictons. But that's the problem, i dont really know how to actually post a fan fiction.:twilightblush: So it would be REALLY helpful if someone were to tell me how to and thanks for your time. :pinkiehappy:

YAY, wonderful story

Oh how I loved this.

D':pinkiesad2:Awwwwww that was a pretty nice story

I got really excited when I saw this. I thought Changing Octaves had finally finished. Then I looked for a minute and saw it was an entirely different story :rainbowhuh:

To be honest, I wasn't particularly happy it wasn't the story I thought it was.

But I read it. And, well, nicely done. It was a very nice short story. :pinkiehappy:

I believe this warrants a mustache :moustache:

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
You have no idea how annoying it is for a bass player to constantly hear Octavia's instrument referred to as a cello. Thank you for making the effort to name it correctly, and thanks for a beautiful bass/piano duet!
images5.fanpop.com/image/photos/30400000/Octavia-background-ponies-30415068-360-360.gif

well.... Octavia is best pony... So, I shall read this. =3

very well written, brings me back to when i first started playing the trumpet 6 and a half years ago....

549062 people kept telling me it was a double cello, and there are many fics that call Octavia a cellist. I thought it was a contrabass, but I wasn't really sure.

575790
Take it from someone who plays. I play the upright, string, acoustic contrabass/bull fiddler, to name all of the things I've heard it called. It's not a cello (you have to sit down to play the cello; you can sit on a stool to play the bass, but it's easier to stand, which Octavia is clearly doing in her scene at the gala) and I've never heard of a double cello. To the internetz! :pinkiehappy:
Anyway, thanks for doing your research; hopefully more fanfic writers will follow your lead.

578434 I used to play percussion. Xylophone, mostly. I could never quite get the right beat on a drum; too monotonous. And I'm pretty damn tone-deaf. While I can appreciate Beethoven, the Stones, Eminem, and all the other artists I enjoy listening too, m ringtone is one of the best things I've ever heard. On the same level as "Girl from ipanema", or whatever. I am certainly no official ado, that much I am sure. But I can appreciate that which I cannot understand; which is most likely the one thing that differs my persona from Twiligt's, if that word is the correct term. I have. Eek told that I got good dance
Ives, I just need to learn timing and linking. Have you ever glided through a crowd? I do a dance from class to class every day. I think I'd have either a book, a PS2 controller, or two left dancing shoes as a CM ... Or something that means you keep ramblin', man.

Nice. The only percussionist I know is, well, also our first violinist because he's just that awesome.
I like the bass and all, but it's more of a hobby than a passion. It's something I'm moderately good at, but not something I'd want to do full time. My cutie mark would either be a book or a bonsai, as you can see from my picture. Actually, there was an image on My Little Brony...
chzbronies.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/my-little-pony-friendship-is-magic-brony-special-talent.png
And at first I looked to the right because I herp a derped my directions, and saw my bass. Then I actually thought about it and looked to my left, where I saw a pillow, a bookmark, and some bonsai tools, because my bed is messy and I don't even bother to clear sharp objects off of it sometimes.
Maybe I should get a cutie mark for annoying rambles too.

581459 Well... Shit. I just looked left. The only things other than the wall is a leg lamp, and a 24-pack of Budweiser. Dammit! And on my right is the kitchen sink. TT~TT

WELL. Looks like my special talent is not in the kitchen.

581519
Maybe that just means you haven't found your special talent yet? Nothing can make a cutie mark appear before it's ready. I think, if I were a pony, I would still have read all those books, and been so confused when I didn't get my cutie mark. Then I'd see Phil, the Japanese Black Pine, and suddenly my cutie mark would appear after being the last blank flank in the class. (Phil was my first tree, may he R.I.P. I met him in Epcot.)
Anyway, if I were you and saw the things you did, I'd think my talent was bringing light to other ponies' lives (lamp) or being able to hold alcohol, or, if you take the kitchen sink and beer together, the ability to make alcohol yourself. I can almost picture you as a moonshiner.

582009 Well, that's the thing. I have had three moments in my life where I had the misfortune to have alcohol enter my mouth. First time, I was eight. On an airplane. The stewardess/flight attendant gave me my aunt's drink. I spat it all over the guy in front of me and said, as I shakily handed the drink to my aunt, "that's not my drink."

The second time was in a pizza/bar restaurant place called The Rock. I get a drink I dubbed the graveyard every time I go out to eat, and most people know what I mean. It is the soda form of a suicide, where different beers are mixed together. My uncle got the suicide. Our drinks were swapped. I didn't get to eat any of the free pbnj pizza cookie icecream thing we got to make up for it. I was too busy emptying my guts in the bathroom as I bawled my eyes out. (Tes, puking makes me cry. It's natural!)

The third time was just two years ago. Please tell everyone you meet to never, ever, EVER pour alcohol in someone's apple juice. I had to leave the party, because I am a lightweight little bitch. God I hate alcohol. At the age of ten, I swore off even picking up a single beer can, whether empty or full. I won't touch it. And I have done a great job, except those three mishaps. Though, I suspect the last one wasn't as much an accident.

As for what my cutie mark might be, I would think something that has to do with editing or critiquing, or the comedy mask. If it isn't any of those, then I would say something along the lines of a book or a pitcher.

582098
Haha, sounds about like my bouts with alcohol. I've had a total of two.
See, my grandma has a pop-up camper, so whenever my family goes camping we go with her. On one camping trip, she got a six-pack of these really good retro strawberry pops in glass bottles. Yum! :derpytongue2: A few years later, I opened the fridge and saw what I thought to be those same drinks. I tried to drink one, but had to spit it out. I thought it had spoiled, which in retrospect is actually what had happened, considering how wine coolers are made.
The second time was entirely my fault. You know how when you have allergies, and also have bad tonsils, that your throat constantly feels like there is pus dripping down it and you can't do anything about it? (I have one bad tonsil and one good tonsil. My parent's won't let me get it taken out.) Well, I got it in my head somewhere that alcohol could fix that. I went to the fridge, opened it, and found a bottle of sake. I tried to drink it. :pinkiesick: It was not worth it; sake tastes like... fermented dirt. And not the good, fertile dirt you put in your garden, but the kind of silt that washes up downstream from industrial plants.
I have given up on alcohol, and I don't blame you for doing the same.

582425 Yeah, haha. yuck. I've also sworn off cigarettes, but everyone keeps telling me that that won't last long. I haven't picked up or lit a single one, though, so... who's right? Have you ever heard of Shasta? Like, Shasta Cola? They had chocolate flavored soda. I drank some. It still wasn't as terrible as beer. :pinkiesick:

582494
I've never had Shasta before.
I've heard that once you're addicted to nicotine, your hormones play dirty to try and get you back to old smoking habits. But if you never really liked 'em in the first place, I don't think it's that difficult because your body hasn't become dependant on it yet.

583073 Well, Shasta Cola and Root Beer are okay. Nothing to write home to Ma about, but they aren't terrible. Shasta Chocolate made it to where I couldn't eat or drink anything with chocolate in it for about a month... which is around the time I finally dumped the rest of the twelve pack out. :pinkiesick:

But, yeah. I doubt I'm gonna get addicted via second hand smoke, but I still ask my parents to not blow the smoke towards me, y'know? :unsuresweetie:

583465
Aw man, you're in a smoking household? That really sucks.
No one in my family does, but that's only because I was born prematurely and my lungs hadn't completely developed yet. The doctors said if I even inhaled a little secondhand smoke it might kill me. Thus my grandpa Bill quit cold turkey, (because my parents wouldn't let me visit if he smoked) and I grew up just fine smoke-free.
But yeah, secondhand smoke is not a good thing at all. You have my sympathies. :fluttershysad:

585601 Well, I can't say they're bad smokers. My aunt only smokes outside or in the car. I havent seen my uncle smoke in a while. But my aunt has quit three times. In the past four years. One time was when she told me if I could get at least a b in pe, she'd quit. I was sick for a week during pe tests, so my A dropped. I brought it back up. She started smoking again because my math dropped to a C. Math wasn't a part of the deal. :ajbemused:

586149
That was just her excuse to get herself some more smokes; probably didn't have anything to do with you. Still sucks though.

587762 Oh, I know it. She knows it. She said she gonna quit on her 50th birthday.

... We're going to Vegas. :ajbemused:

She keeps telling me not to lie, and I hope she is following her own advice.

587783
Probably not. It'll take something big, like life-threatening lung cancer or something to make her try to stop, and even then she won't be able to without a lot of help. Once you're hooked, you're hooked.

Interesting and excellent story. I quite liked how you linked the music in the story. Through I'll have to wait until I'm home to listen to the music.
Edit: Songs are awesome.
