Something about that dog frightens and disturbs me...
This story is heavily influenced by Social Standards, isn't it? Much of it is very similar -most obviously the whole 'Soarin helps Braeburn accept himself' plotline, but little details too -like the mares thinking that trivial things help build relationships, and Braeburn screaming after Soarin kisses him. I think you should edit the more similar details a bit, because anyone who has read both is instantly going to compare them.
Other than that, I loved it and will be reading the sequel.

714584 Let me re-word that now that I'm off my crappy phone. Yes, Winding Roads was inspired by Social Standards, whenever anypony tells me they love it, or it's their favorite M/M shipping fic, I always tell them they should go and read Social Standards if they love it that much. And Y'know what? Most people still have this as their favorite, and I... I just don't know why... I still think Social Standards is better in many ways... but some people have called it... eh... cliche is the right word, and I don't see that either. You could call this a rip-off, I like to call it a tribute.

I gather the details from everywhere that I've ever seen. I do regret not bringing up the whole "Morals" or "Man and woman because there should be children" kind of things.
No, I have fabricated the personalities of both Soarin and Braeburn from my imagination, although I have given Braeburn my anxiety and fear of others judging me. so in some ways I like to imagine myself as Brae in this fic.
Loved this story and I'm looking forward to the sequel.

And Soarin... yeah... I hate him at the moment (Hence why I'm having writers block with the sequel)

For Braeburn, it was his first love, because it was a new, happy feeling for him to feel the smallest amount of affection may have made him suddenly latch onto Soarin without knowing it, in turn with Soarin realizing just how much Braeburn depended on and liked him, he chose to protect him because he realized just how much he had been hurting, in turn quickly latching on and growing true affection for Braeburn as well. Their time together was short, yes, but Soarin didn't realize just how much he cared for Braeburn until a year later, in Entangled Pathways, that he realized just how much me missed the other.
Their relationship in this one was meant to be quick, Soarin simply felt sorry for Braeburn, and in return Braeburn loved Soarin quickly since he was for once being told he wasn't a freak for who he was, anyone who can pull you out of that darkness you will be forever grateful for. In my mind, Soarin didn't truly feel he was going to stay with Braeburn until Entangled Pathways, which they had been sending letters back and forth for a year straight. Entangled Pathways is there to flesh out Soarin and why he loves Braeburn the way he does. And... for spoilers I can't say much more, but Braeburn was more of a crutch for him as well...
Aaaaannnd... Quickly, for Soarin just randomly helping people, I assume he is just a nice guy that hates to see other's suffer, or he stretched the truth because once again... events in the sequel that are coming up.

Props for writing M/M fiction, but I can't help feeling like I missed the part where Soarin takes a moment for introspection. Even if Braeburn weren't a closet case, Soarin's advances would still be really irritating. The "kind soul trying to help out the poor confused colt" thing kinda clashes with the free spirit, surfer dude thing. If Braeburn were out, "no" would mean "no," and not "Please continue."

Let me start by saying that this is the first cultcuddler fic I have ever read, EVER. The reasons being that I'm a hardcore fillyfooler fan... and I'm straight. But I felt like I had to at least read one for no reason, and this was a pretty good read, I got a few feels. And it was well written. Well done sir.

I read this story on FFN. It was amazing there too, and if anypony disagrees, worse things will happen to you then what Soarin did to the stallions that hurt Braeburn.
No, I didn't enjoy this story, sorry. Everything seems to just a huge oversized here: earth ponies are all cruel and homophobic here, fighting 3-to-1 with poor Brae for nothing really, almost killing him; Soaring is a some kind of successful wise-teacher gay-lovelas (hic!) and also constantly depicted noticably older than Brae, and this is a turn off (for me anyway); Brae seems doing almost nothing except for constantly crying/having nightmares; Bareburn's parents described in an totally awful way - man, no parent ever will beat his son to blood for him being gay, even the worst of them (but sure - just words can beat deeper, yeah - just a remark). There are some nice scenes here and there in the story, but in overall... everything seems just so out of characters/MLP universe for me... sorry againg for such a review... was able to read till chapter 7 just in case, dropped then.

I wouldn't call it an unpopular pair just not mainstream one. Also, wow, people strongly disliked my comment. I've gotten a lot of crap in my own stories for bad grammar, well deserved too, but it's so important. People can be so easily turned off by bad grammar.
