ch. 24 Angela

Midnight woke up to something nudging him.

“Mmnn… Let me sleep!” He moved his hoof in the air to try and get whatever was trying to wake him up to leave. Instead of working, whatever it was just tried harder. “Bat bat swoooo!”

“Alright! I’m up! What do you want?”

Midnight looked around. First he noticed Angela starting to wake up next to him. That reminded him of what happened last night. Next, he noticed the large bat with a heart shaped nose that had been trying to wake him up.

“Thanks for waking me up!” He told the swoobat. “Could you find that little guy from last night to help me with Angela?”

‘I- little guy.

Midnight was thrown off by this before he remembered what Ben and Lea had told him about pokemon and evolution. He had to admit, the little pokemon from last night and this one did look very similar. It wasn’t a stretch to reason they were the same pokemon.

“Alright. Thanks for helping me. By the way, your communication methods sound better than last night.”

‘Thank- -I be- friend?

“I see no reason why not, though I have noticed some pokemon have names and others don’t. Would you like one?”

--you want.’

“How does… Silver Wing sound? I know you don’t really have silver wings but-” He was cut off by the swoobat.

“Swoo! Swoo, swoo! Bat bat bat!” Silver said happily.

“I take it that you like it! That’s perfect! And silver can be your nickname.”

“Ab ab sol absol. Sol sol absol ab absol.”

“What was that?”

She- a headache.

“*sigh* Listen Angela. I need to talk to you about last night, but first we’re going to need to go get someone to cast a translation spell on you.”

Before Angela could get a response in, Caddi trotted down the steps. “Good morning! You two are up early. I got scared for a second there when I heard voices downstairs.”

“That’s alright Kiwi. Hey do you happen to know how to use the translation spell?”

Caddi looked at Angela, unsure of what to do. Finally she waved Angela over and answered Midnight. “I can, but I’m not that good at magic so I need to be left alone with her to cast it so I can concentrate.”

“Take all the time you need. Well, not all the time you need. I still need to talk with her.”

Caddi nodded to Midnight and led Angela into another room. She dropped her disguise and cast the translation spell on Angela.

“Why couldn’t you have just done it in there?” Angela asked. “He could have been quiet enough. Besides, I know you love him.”

Caddi blushed a little. “Yeah, I kinda do. But that’s the thing. He doesn’t know I’m a changeling yet, and ponies don’t always trust us.”

“Why couldn’t you have just cast the spell with your disguise on?”

“While I’m great with my changeling powers, I’m not that great at other magic. I can only use simple unicorn magic when I’m disguised as one. The Translation spell is hard enough that I can only cast it when I’m as a changeling.”

“So you can only do one thing and not the other.” Angela guessed.

“Exactly.” Caddi donned her disguise again. “Now let’s go back to Midnight so he can talk to you.”

They returned to when Midnight was waiting. Caddi left the two of them to talk while she went out to the store. Midnight and Angela waited until a few minutes after she left to get around to talking with each other.

“What is it you wanted to talk to me about anyway?” Angela asked.

“In the middle of the night, you came stumbling down the stairs.”

“So?”

“That followed up with you attacking me and apparently yelling something about you parents.”

Angela’s eyes widened, but she quickly made it neutral again. “Ha, that’s a good one Midnight! Why would I have thought you killed my parents.”

“I only said you were yelling about them, nothing else.” He glared at Angela the same way he always did when he wanted ponies to talk.

“Alright! You got me! I’ve been having nightmares about my parent’s death recently and various… other things.”

“What do you mean?”

Angela sighed. “I told you yesterday how I used to belong to evil based people. Back before then, I was a wild pokemon, and I lived with my parents and four hatch-mates.” Midnight started to ask her what she mean, but she cut him off. “That means my siblings. My mom was lucky enough to have triplets the first time, and twins the second time. I was the first of my siblings to hatch. The youngest was my sister. The other three were brothers.”

“But what happened to your parents?” Midnight asked.

“I was getting there.” Angela responded. “One night, while my hatch-mates and I were sleeping, I was woken up by a cry from my father. I woke up to find my mother standing guard of my siblings and I from a group of people. She was very hurt, and to the side…” Angela paused as she tried to choke out the words. “To the side was my father, who was lying there, dead.”

Before Angela could continue, she felt Midnight’s hoof on her shoulder. “You can stop there if you want.” He told her.

“No, i-it’s probably best for me if I get it all out now.”

“Okay, but feel free to stop if you need to.”

“Th-thanks. Anyway, my mom tried but she fell to the same fate my father had. They then took all of us and even sawed off my father’s horns. Oh, uh, he was a Sawsbuck, and they change how they look depending on the seasons. They were rare in the area we were living in and apparently sold for a lot on the black market.

“Anyway, they started training us vigorously. One day, I had heard that they were thinking of getting rid of one of us for not being strong enough. My sister was the smallest and weakest of us, so I guessed they meant her. After that, I started giving her some of my food and helping her train so they wouldn’t get rid of her. A few months went by, and we were all still together. But then one day, we were brought together and one man talked to our trainer saying that he would only take the strongest one of us, and that he had to ‘off’ the other four.

“I was the one they chose to use. When they came to take me, I couldn’t leave my siblings and then…” Angela stopped as she caught her breath. Midnight was about to try and comfort her again when she spoke again, yelling this time. “THEY MADE ME KILL THEM! THEY FUCKING MADE ME KILL MY OWN FAMILY! THEY MADE ME CUT THEIR HEADS OFF AND I HAD TO WATCH AS MY BODY WAS FORCED TO DO IT!

“NOW ALL OF THE OTHER POKEMON I KNEW FROM THAT GROUP ARE HERE AND FOR ALL I KNOW, I’LL DO THE SAME TO MY NEW FAMILY! I CAN STAY AND RISK THEIR LIVES, OR LEAVE AND BREAK THEIR HEARTS!”

Angela broke out crying on the ground. Before Midnight could do anything, a black and yellow blur ran over to Angela and hugged her.

“Oh Angela. Why didn’t you tell me?” It was Lea. She had come downstairs earlier and had heard the whole story. “You’re my sister, and I’ll understand whatever you choose. It’d be sad to see you leave after we just found you, but you should decide.”

Angela had, for the most part, stopped crying. Soon she was hugging Lea back. Once the two finished, Lea gave Midnight an angry glare. “Leave us! You have made my sister cry, which is very hard to do! Go find something else to do!”

At that, Midnight ran off, hoping to find Caddi as she was shopping.

“You di-didn’t have to do that.” Angela sniffed.

“Yes I did.” Lea rebutted. “I know when you need time alone, and this is one of these times. I’ll go kick matrix out of the bedroom so you can stay up there and you can come out when you want.”

“No Lea, you don’t have to-”

Lea stopped Angela from talking. “Yes, I do. I said that I would be fine if you left right now. Albeit I will be sad at first, I don’t want to make it worse for you. And if you do leave, I want to make sure I got to help you feel better first.”

“But Lea…” It was too late. Lea was already running upstairs, calling for Matrix to wake up. “She’s never going to take no for an answer, is she?”

“I don’t think so. But I don’t know her as well as you do.” Said Silver.

Angela sighed. “Shouldn’t you have gone with Midnight?”

“Aw fudge!” Silver exclaimed before he zoomed off after Midnight.

Angela laughed a little before she was interrupted by a whisper. “Where are you?

She whipped her head around, but Angela couldn’t find out where it had come from. She was about to dismiss it as her imagination when she heard it again, except followed this time by: “Come here.”

Half of her felt like leaving and trying to find out where the voice was coming from while the other was ready to hide. Eventually, Angela decided it would be best if she went up to the bedroom like Lea wanted her to so she could be alone and calm down.

“DAMN IT!” Grumpig yelled. “I had her! I had a connection and she almost responded! I could feel it.

Grumpig had been alone concentrating for most of an hour. Ire, Quarry, and the rest of the pokemon had been outside, waiting for her to come out.

“What’s wrong?” Ire asked as she stepped in, followed by Mightyena.

“It was weak, but I had a connection to the absol’s chip. She was just strong enough to resist the command I sent to it.”

“Why do we even need this absol?” Mightyena asked. “I’m plenty strong enough. I’ve even got the same typing as her.”

“Yes…” Grumpig hissed. “But Absol are normally stronger, and it just so happens this one knows a special move that other pokemon don’t.”

“What do you mean?” Ire asked.

“Pokemon are usually limited by their move set. The group I belonged to wanted to help create new moves for the pokemon they had so that they could be superior. Not all of us were able to learn one. Only about one in five were successful at the task. She and the cryogonal I introduced you to were some of the very first. They have the most experience in how to use their attacks, which is what I want, since sometimes the pokemon didn’t always… survive the power so of their attacks had.”

“Do you happen to know any?” Ire asked, hoping for something extra to use and surprise L.

“I know something I call Hypnoblast, which puts a pokemon to sleep while hurting them a little bit as well, but it puts me to sleep too. I don’t recommend the use of it unless it’s a last chance type of thing.”

“So, technically you’ve got nothing special?”

“Not unless you count the certain dark type pokemon I can actually control, no.”

“You said that you could only barely had a connection to the chip thing.” Ire said. “We know that snowflake looking guy saw this absol. Maybe he saw something else that gives us a clue as to where she ended up.”

“That’s… actually a good idea.” Grumpig agreed. “I’ll find out.”

Grumpig’s eyes started to glow blue as she set up a telepathic connection with the cryogonal. When she returned to normal, Ire could tell something was wrong.

“What did you find out.” Ire inquired.

“Oh,” Grumpig faked a smile. “It just so happens she was with two umbreon. One of them was even shiny. Exactly like L and her umbreon friend!”

While Grumpig frowned again, Ire started to grin evilly.

“Why are you so happy?” Grumpig asked.

“We can use the absol to help us get rid of L, and she won’t lift a hoof against her friend. Well, in her case it would be a paw, but still…”

Now it was Grumpigs turn to smile, this time for real. “Why didn’t I think of that Ire? That means that absol is the best chance we have.”

“What do you mean by chance? We have this whole plan in the bag. There’s no way that stupid L will ever be able to mess with us again!”

“Why did you make me leave the bedroom Lea? I was still trying to sleep.” Matrix was upset at having to be woken up so early.

“Because that’s the best place for Angela to be alone.”

“Wait,” That answer had gotten Matrix’s attention. “What happened while I was asleep?”

“Apparently she’s been having nightmares about when she was younger, mainly about the deaths of her family.” Lea answered him.

“What?! How did they-?”

“Lea stopped him. “It’s very personal for Angela, enough that talking about it made her cry. Not just normal crying, but she broke down into tears on the ground!”

“Are you sure this is Angela we’re talking about?”

“Absolutely! All you need to know is that she’s scared that her being here could cause us to get hurt, but she also doesn’t want to leave us at the same time. I wanted to give her space to figure it out.”

“Okay. As long as she-”

This time, Matrix was interrupted by Ziggs, who had pounced on him.

“*gasp* You’re awake! You’re not usually up this early! Come on! My dad’s working and I wanna play!”

“Avenge me!” Matrix whispered as he was dragged away by the small pokemon.

Lea giggled. For the first time in a while, she felt at home in Equus. She just hoped it would last.
