What fills and soothes the soul will vary, but for me, I will not know until I try.

Sequels1

"Unicorns have magic, Pegasi have the sky, and Earth ponies have the ground beneath their hooves. Though they are all different, they share a common trait amongst themselves. All of them have the ability to earn a cutie mark. So, where do I belong?"

Soapbox -- a donkey born into a pony family -- tries to understand where he fits in since he can't use magic, fly, have the strength of an earth pony, or earn a cutie mark.

Horse (pony) + Donkey = Mule
Horse (pony) + Horse (pony) =/= Donkey :applejackconfused:

Other than that a nice little fic , although it felt unresolved :applejackunsure: .

interesting premiss

I like it, although it needs more chapters! Moar, MOAR! :rainbowwild:

Also, I'm half-expecting Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon to make fun of Soapbox. :twilightsheepish:

Ah, a donkey. One of the underappreciated species. Very nice.

I still can’t understand. I knew I was different, but, how, just how is it possible that a pegasus stallion and a unicorn mare conceived a donkey?!

Since you said you're a DONKEY and not a MULE, I guess we can rule out Ms. Unicorn having a fetish for droopy ears and droopy faces. Instead we'll just say they couldn't have kids of their own and simply chose to adopt. Or kidnap you. But let's go with the more likely scenario of being adopted.

Pretty good story for something that was so introspective. This is a fine step up over my first reading of something that started off coincidentally all too similar to the Hubert one.

Nice story. Certainly one I'd put on my consideration list to go to the "Next Round". You get a Yes from me. Or, at least you would if this didn't insinuate she IS a pony who just happens to be a Donkey. But let's save those technicalities for a potential 'shocker' of a sequel. :P

I kid though, you get a pass! (not that my vote matters :P)

4853301 Diamond Tiara ain't no racist. D:

But you dang well know she'll ask around to find out enough facts of pony biology to make her regret asking those questions and eventually give up on trying to pick on her because it would bring up traumatizing images of what makes a pony. And NO ONE wants to picture their parents MAKING BABIES. :pinkiesick:

A very interesting look at the perspective of a non-pony equine in Equestria.

We don't see that that often do we? There's Zecora, who (as you point out) has her own type of magic, but that just seemed to make the Ponies afraid of her. When it comes to Mules & Donkeys however, we've only seen the unnamed Mule twice in the show for the "Stubborn as a Mule" & "Be cool or be Mule" gags to which the pony then adds "no offense" & the Mule responds "none taken." This did make me wonder though if there is (or was) a perception in Equestria of Mules & Donkeys being second-class citizens, perhaps by the meaner & more close-minded members of Pony society (coughDTSilverspooncough) Matilda appeared to have been living in Ponyville for some years quite happily though, & Cranky had no trouble moving in, so if any feelings like that do exist they're either buried or not present in the area of Ponyville, which appears to pride itself on it's inclusive attitude. MAybe it's not the quite the same in other areas of Equestria though.

As to the point about Cutie-Marks & Destiny however, I can't help but feel that maybe Soapbox is in the same boat as the Crusaders were when they first met. He certainly seems driven & focussed on his studies, so he's filled with potential. He can pursue anything he wants. He can still search for & find his talent in life without a confirmation of it appearing on his flank. Just go & out there & find it anyway.

I really enjoyed this but it feels incomplete. I need more. Donkeys and mules should have stories written about them and their experiences in Equestria. I think Soapbox could turn around his thinking. Not having a Cutie Mark could be a good thing as you are not tied down to any one skill. You can do whatever you want.*

*offer does not include, magic, flying, or whatever earth ponies can do.

I had a feeling I would see you in here.

Maybe he's adopted.

The idea of those without Cutie Marks siluffering identity and inferiority issues is fertile ground indeed. It would have been stronger had this been a hybrid, though. It makes the issue more deeply peronal and blood-close. Their pny blood gives them everything but a Cutie Mark.

4854270 I meant like call him a blank flank :twilightblush:

4866111 I know, I'm just expressing how complicated DT can be with her level of getting beneath people's skin as we say. You can't just randomly pick someone out of a crowd and just call them names. It doesn't look good on you and DT is all about winning ponies over and likes being right about her accusations, hence how she would run to teacher like in Cutie Pox to get adult backing to show how right/smart she is about something.

Essentially it was a joke to say how DT would just end up avoiding Soapbox if anything, plus the last thing she needs is Soapbox getting on her little soapbox and giving a speech on equality and going all Maretin Neighter Princess on her.

4866512
Uh...forget I said anything. :twilightoops: :pinkiesick:

That would be rather interesting to see Diamond Tiara try to pick a fight with Soapbox. You could even have Silver Spoon back up Soapbox, standing against DT because she feels this is way out of line. I've always had the sense that Silver Spoon is kindhearted at her core since she was the first one to clap for Granny Smith during the Apple Appreciation day back in S2. I think that's the name of the episode. :derpytongue2:

As for Soapbox himself, I originally thought about him when I remembered the Baby Cakes episode. Mr. and Mrs. Cake had unicorn foal and a pegasus, so I thought about a donkey being born to pony parents. While this would never happen or is "unlikely" to happen, I took some liberties with some pony genetics (ponetics).

Thanks for the comments all. This story was a doozy of a story to write. Took about 2 weeks to cement things into place in my mind "The tomb of king tut with the cobwebs and dust :twilightblush: " and started writing down the line.

For those curious if there's another chapter down the line, all I can say is "maybe." There's a lot on my plate right now. :scootangel:

Maybe what donkeys lack in 'magic' of all kinds, they make up for in raw cunning (That would be a plus ). Besides Cranky got to attend the Grand Galloping Gala along with Matilda, so the donkeys of Equestria got something going on (Not to mention that Saddle Arabian horses have no cutie mark at all, from what we've seen). Maybe 'magic' differs from species to species. *shrugs*
Overall I give it a 7 out of 10.

4855072 I had the same thought: maybe donkeys are just too multi-faceted to be pinned down to one mark!

Maybe ponies have cutie marks to make them happy doing the only things they'll ever be good at.

It's almost Orwellian.

Also, that it felt incomplete. Good prompt use, though.
