An update and a tearjerker? YAY!
Now, we just need to get Sweetie and DT into a room, lock it, and not open it till they are shipped together.
As always, you make me want more. Yet, I must say that you should continue taking your time. We'll wait for updates. :D
It lives, it as worth the wait too. I understand taking your time...but think you can try to have a chapter out faster then once or twice a year. The story is really good.
Yay, an update!
Looks like I need to re-read the rest of the story, because I don't remember anything about Mac and Cheerilee.
7599787
The alternative is none, unfortunately. I do my best, and sometimes that best is pretty well short of sufficient, but I'm not going to stop writing just because I can't write as often as I'd like. If it bothers you, you needn't track me.
7599807
There hasn't been any additional look at their relationship. It's just a little flavor to indicate the world isn't static around the Crusaders. Other ponies have lives, too, and every so often, we'll get a look at them.
Wait, am I forgetting something or did the confrontation between Scoots and Silver happen off-screen?
Glad to see this get updated. It's one of, if not the best scootadopt stories I've ever read.
7599847 I didn't mean any disrespect. If this is how long it takes you it how long it takes you. I understand life comes first.
I half expected things to get worse before getting better. Like ab and scoots getting into a hoof fight in the school yard
I find cheerilee's trying to take partial credit for everything somewhat wrong considering there is still karmaic retribution to come to her for her blackmailing, you can't really deny she did that either, the story is fine don't get me wrong, just her attitude really needs a good deal of adjustment as what she did could have caused much more harm then good.
Yay you're not dead!
*claptrap voice* Wow! You're not dead?!
You roped me into liking the silver spoon scootaloo ship, goddamnit don't take it away from me
7600506
I don't think she's due for any 'karmatic retribution' or needs an 'attitude adjustment' at all.
With what she said and did to Scoots to get her into working with Silver Spoon. You're quick to forget that it was Octavia who told her to do it. And it was Octavia who wanted it to be a lesson to get her to be more mature and apply herself. So she would have a good chance at the Academy, since as Dash said in the fic. They aren't there to hold a pony's hoof. (and paraphrased. They only take pony's who have their shit together).
So Cheers put her with Silver Spoon. A pony, that Octavia wanted her to choose from, that Scoots didn't get along with. But that Cheers knew they could get along if there was a sufficient carrot on the line. And she had as pointed out in this chapter. Ulterior motives for choosing those two. As stated in this chapter.
So yeah, you're way off on Cheers. And you can't blame her for doing what the parent (who's in charge of her child) told her to do. Especially like both mares knew would happen (or at least was more than likely) was bound to succeed.
I was pretty excited when I saw this fic had been updated... then subsequently devoured the prequel and the rest of this story so I could remember the details.
My feels. All of them.
Fantastic as ever, and I await the next installment eagerly!
7602318 she threatened a students entire future on a hunch, even at the parents urging as an educator that's still going too far. hell most educational systems would end up with major trouble to both parents and the teacher if this got out, blackmail is still wrong no matter the source and the extent cheerilee was willing to go says her students well being is ridiculously short on her list of important things. in the end it was wrong no matter the outcome, next time cheerilee is willing to try something stupid like this, she might end up destroying a students future.
7603060 7602318
Perhaps we consider for a moment that Cheerilee is smart enough to realize her plan is high risk. That she's a pretty good teacher and the education system in Ponyville, like most things, is better than ours, and the risks are lower. That she is more in tune with her students than might be immediately obvious. A few salient points:
People seem very sticky about the threat of ruining Scootaloo's future. Bear in mind Cheerilee at no point implied she would do anything but grade fairly, regardless of outcome. Her threat to fail Scootaloo was based on Scootaloo's own threat to take a zero specifically because she knew her grades were good enough to withstand it, and her partner's weren't. That is spiteful at best and academically dishonest at worst. Cheerilee is well within her rights to determine grade value of the project, and if she wants, she could simply make it worth enough to fail her, grade it a zero purely based on the sliding scale of quality she expects from each of her students individually, and the result would be a failure.
Secondly, she designed this entire project, for all the groups, to be something uniquely valuable to each of them. For some, like AB, it's an opportunity to explore a topic of special relevancy to them they may not have otherwise pursued. For others, it's a chance to both recognize and take advantage of the value another pony may have that--in Scootaloo's special case--she is too wrapped up in spiteful prejudices to identify.
Third, and most importantly, she isn't forcing anypony to succeed in the face of impossible circumstances. She said before the project began that there would be a personal element to the grading, and has already informed Sweetie Belle that if DT doesn't get her act together, SB won't be penalized for her stubbornness. SB need only show some level of effort in the direction of working together to get special consideration.
A few other, less major points:
Cheerilee says Octavia only suggested the ploy. It was something she was contemplating anyway, and having the parents' blessing was just reassurance, not the impetus.
Scootaloo was NOT going to get into the academy without the project. This is a bit revelatory, but in the timeline this project doesn't happen in, the academy reps come down and do the aforementioned interviews, and several of them are extremely damning, Cheerilee's among them. Not because she's intentionally defamatory, but because she's honest that Scootaloo can be very stubborn and occasionally spiteful, that she seems to hold grudges for a long time, that while she's very smart, she's prone to overconfidence, and can take a dismissive attitude towards others she deems less intelligent or capable. So it's not like Scootaloo was on a perfectly fine track and Cheerilee's threatening to derail that; this project is her ONLY shot at getting accepted, though obviously no one actually knows that.
Failing a season, especially at this school, is not extremely uncommon (Snips has failed three) and is also an understood risk that secondary schools would take into account. Failing is not a death knell for one's future in Equestria like it would be elsewhere. Most secondary schools don't expect to see perfection across the board, they expect the schools to accurately assess and foster their student's success. The exceptions are academies--especially engineering academies--doubly especially royal academies--who ABSOLUTELY expect perfection, not only in scores and grades, but also in interpersonal (interpony?) interactions. A failing season necessarily prohibits Scootaloo from acceptance, but so does being a jerk to her fellow students. This is Cheerilee trying to fix the latter and doing what she must because of Scootaloo's personality by threatening the former. Bottom line is that even if she didn't succeed, she would still be in great shape for a great future; just not the future she wants.
I hope I helped shine a little extra light on the thought process behind the scenes on Cheerilee's decision making.
7603060
Actually it's not wrong at all. I've seen many teachers and schools do something similar with students. Heck I've been to schools that did worse than this. And it was and is seen as perfectly acceptable. Hell I was held back my senior year from a school test that was pretty much this (You either pass or you fail the year and get held back till you pass.)
And I've been too 22 different shools in my school life from K to 12th. In 5 different states. So I have a rather wide view on what schools and teachers do. That's not even counting the dickery done in zero tolerance schools.
Seriously though you're really over-reacting. And if she didn't face this challenge, the second she pulled her indignation, fit for working with someone she didn't like they'd toss her. Hell hearing that she couldn't and wouldn't work with someone she didn't like would have destroyed her dreams anyway. Since the Academy does highly invasive and thorough checks on everyone who applies. So at least this way she get's it in her head that this is something she needs to learn how to do or see her dream crash and burn before her eyes.
7603333
Sorry was making my reply while you were replying. And those are good points.
7603333 I'm willing to accept most of your reasoning, but cheer lee's ability to decide a projects value to the overall grade shouldn't individual as that is a system asking for corruption, generally if a teacher decides a project is worth the majority of a students grade for a year, it has to apply to the whole class as such, in this case cheerilee has not properly informed the class that there year rides on this one project.
7603449 Meh, I'm a 'Whatever the story is shipping, if it's done good and in the focus' kinda guy, with some big 'No!'s for some ships. Like Sweetie and Button Mash. I reeeeally hate Button Mash, and thus hate any ship with him. Tho i hate the Sweetie-Mash ship the most.
My gods your back! The story continues and harmony is restored. Please don't make us wait so long for the next chapter. I want to hug them all.
Excellent chapter, makes me want to go back and reread it and the 1st story. I was somewhat hoping that the applebloom scoots fight wouldn't be resolved so quickly. Looking forward to see where the fic goes.
7603415
And conversely, a system without personal grading begs to be gamed. No teacher should be forced to grade without any consideration for extenuating circumstances, and expecting otherwise is to ignore the inherent differences in skill, focus, ability, will, opportunity, and support that every student faces. I guarantee your teachers graded any subjective work you did for them based on their own lens honed by experience. It's the line between "well, they got the wrong answer, but all their work is good, they just misplaced a decimal point, so only a point off," and "well, even though they clearly understand the material, their final answer is wrong, so all ten points off." The first results in a student who pays better attention in the future, the second in a student who feels like a failure and is less likely to try in the future.
Additionally, in response to your suggestion that she needed to tell everyone it might fail their season, she's said all she had to by telling them the project would have a level of personal grading. Could easily be 50% the outcome and 50% your contribution, resulting in a potential difference of 50% and 100% for a perfect project that only the second participant contributed to.
Regardless, this is all implying somehow that Cheerilee is somehow susceptible to corruption, a character quality that neither the show nor I have hinted at. It's all conjecture, and relatively weak conjecture at that.
7604055 not cheerilee but the system, this is a system with nobles and such meaning that if this where how things work some noble or wealthy pony simply needs to slip a less reputable teacher some bits to have there stupider then mud kid go through without trying, and in any school system a teacher still has to make the percentage of ones grade the project counts for be for the entirety of the class, how they choose to grade is there individual basis not the worth of the project. by saying that she decides scootaloo's project alone is worth over 51% of her overall grade may be seen as a clever strategy to force her to adjust to one on one contact true, but it could also be seen as a form of harassment. you point out we've seen no evidence of corruption in cheerilee so I well make another point.
we've seen no evidence celestia is stupid enough not to have a standardized system for grading in the school system.
7604205
And that point is where we'll have to permanently disagree. I think standardized grading systems are rife with issues to the point of being more destructive than having no grading system at all. You can disagree with that, but the discussion would have to end, because it's a bigger issue than can be hashed out in the comments section.
In this sense, it's also moot, because in the NLL-verse, Equestria is more of a federation of smaller states than a uniform nation, and each state--with very variable sizes--has its own policy and law that governs the goings-on within the state. Larger, more metropolitan states might have stricter rules on education policy than smaller ones, for example. In Ponyville, despite its growing size, there are only a couple schools, and the Ponyville Schoolhouse is the smallest of them, has been run very well for a very long time by the teacher, and has never shown evidence of corruption, despite being located in a city that houses some very wealthy families indeed. As a result, it is considered reliable, and no one has had cause to investigate yet. That might change in the future, but "fixing what isn't broken" isn't considered good policy.
Celestia and Luna as a duarchy are largely hooves-off in their approach, intervening only when necessary to maintain the success and status quo of the dominion. Their concerns where education is involved is limited to making sure the standards are maintained, and not with the exact methodology. As long as ponies keep coming out of Ponyville sufficiently capable and educated, they'll let Cheerilee run her school however she pleases.
If you want, you can probably imagine that such scandals HAVE occurred in the past, and were generally handled at the state level, and not the national one. Typically with the reversion of educational marks deemed to have been unfairly influenced, as well as termination, loss of credentials, and being barred from teaching again anywhere in the nation (a status leveed by state-level judicial action that applies across state lines). For somepony whose purpose in life is to teach, a black mark of that caliber is a tremendous punishment, so it's not exactly a favorable option, regardless of the money involved (not to mention the money itself would be reclaimed as part of the penalties). Money isn't really the same overwhelming motivator for ponies as it can be for people. Only a few ponies really show any desire for massive wealth; most just want to fulfill their purpose and consider that sufficient reward. Offering Rainbow Dash a million bits to quit the Wonderbolts forever would have zero effect on her, because she's not in it for money. Cheerilee is in the same boat.
*coughs* Well, I should have checked back sooner, had I not been avoiding fimficiton for a bit due to my own procrastination. >.>
I loved the new chapter. It was nice to see how the lessons everypony received or came to the conclusion with previously came together. There is a part of me curious as to where it goes from here, though. The only remaining antagonistic point is the Diamond Tiara one at the moment, so I am definitely anticipating being surprised in upcoming chapters. :3
I really loved the Cheerimac aspect of it. One of my personal favorite ships after the love potion episode. XD
This fic has been, and still is, my favorite pony fanfiction I've read. I look forward to whenever you are able to put out another chapter. Thank you for the wonderful time reading! ^.^
....Also on the school system thing. Uhm... I get that it may seem off from a subjective viewpoint for some, but when I read and even reconsidered the points. I, honestly, don't see an issue with the "set-up" as it were. It was a gamble, but Cheerilee does not remain a teacher for so long without having decent judgement on how to run her class. Besides, there are a lot, a LOT, worse set-ups to force ponies together in various stories. This one worked well while I was reading it, and I see no reason to re-examine that outlook.
Is this going to get another chapter or what?
Nice chapter, good work.
I still miss this Story you know? To this day it's still one of the best scootaloo fics I've seen.
7987999
Depends on how you view the actual people in the world who hold precisely these--and similar--views. If you don't think they exist, then yeah, AJ's going to seem like a caricature. If you're related to some, like I am, she's going to ring just a little too true to be comfortable.
7994423
Yeah. I know people like that as well. Although they are more right leaning, and think that even if they 'are good people, and should treat them with respect' the fact that they are an ''abomination' and doomed to go to hell' makes them distant from them (Even if their family ... or to the point of throwing actual bibles at them.). Although that's stupid since the quotes they make are one's made by man, not their god. And durring a time in their history when they were raping their way across Canaan to the holy land and needed to breed more soldiers.
In the actual bible on what their god hates (Which there are 7) homosexuality isn't one of them. But to those peeps. They self-righteously judge others (Even though they in turn are judging themselves in accord to their faith's laws.).
I really, really look forward to the next chapter. This is an amazing fic, made by an amazing author, with tons of touching moments. And I really miss this fic updating. There really is no better VinylTavi fic out there, and the greatest ScootAdopt series ever. At least IMHO.
7929325
Yep. This author has an amazing talent in doing character interactions and world building. And this is the best ScootAdoption fic out there (and best VinylTavi ships out there as well.).
I had been away from the fandom for a while and missed this last chapter. Hopefully you continue, this was one of my favorite stories. I'm patient though. Hell I still have hope for Hail to the King and its been 3 years since the last update.
i do hope this fic continues in the near future.
also kinda hope silver spoon comes around and gives scoots a try =p
So far I am thoroughly enjoying this fic and I really hope the author plans on continuing it
So to all of you that haven't read the Brief Update Blog Post and are just checking in to see if the story has updated. I have a link to the blog post. I recommend reading that first before you go and complain about the story not updating.
https://www.fimfiction.net/blog/768106/brief-update
I would like more if thats alright with you
Should have read it slower cuz now I'm all out of chapters. I'll wait for more, though. This story is worth it.
Also, take my like and fave.
You're damn right that was unecessary. It was crossing the line, that's what it was! Still, I'm glad that you stepped up and made up for it AB. Though you should be lucky that Octavia and Vinyl were not there to hear that, especially Vinyl.
Exactly. You assumed; you didn’t know for sure AB. I get that you were angry at Scootaloo for lying, but that is zero justification for what you did and said!
Sadly, no....
Which was totally you’re fault.
8908057
They have. I need to make another blog post about it to keep everyone up to speed. I might actually have some time to write in the future.
Just finished rereading No Longer Lost, thought I'd ping this for a new chapter before rereading it too.
9236896
Really??? Geez....
9237484
I see....
9238041
9236904
Yep. You really get the story of how utterly horrible she is when Silver Spoon was talking about her friendship with Deets, and then the final talk they had together that ended with them cutting ties with each other. Of course it doesn't help that you add that with her Cutie Mark for bossing others around + a domineering personality.
And yep all the .
9238327
Wow, just...wow.
Love rereading this story.. Great job and hope it continues
9237958
If this were a thing that regularly updated, you might get to the story where Dash becomes a flight school instructor and meets a fresh-faced recruit looking for a new start while her old life falls apart behind her, only to realize that that new recruit is an old classmate from the Junior Speedsters, a very old, very good friend and--most importantly--her first true love. But can love reignited in such a high-stress environment burn long? And can Rainbow Dash maintain her professionalism and dignity while still finding time to catch up with her old lover? And will the jealousy of her cohorts drive the somewhat underprepared new recruit out of flight school and out of Rainbow's life again, this time for good?!
