Ponies think Celestia is a physical deity. Thing is, Celestia is tired of ponies thinking she's a physical deity. Fortunately, sister Luna is around for Celestia to speak her woes to!

Written because I decided to poke fun at how a lot of people assume Alicorns are some sort of physical divinities.
NOTE: Another thing I made out of boredom, so it likely sucks. Sorry!

Game of Twister against Death... ha! I love that idea for their immortality.

But this does raise an interesting question: At what point does a mortal become a deity? How much power is the upper limit for a mortal? The lower limit for a deity? And how much does public opinion shift that limit? Curious.

Have a like! I can't imagine why you have a dislike... dislikers never explain themselves...

You confuse immortals and deities.
Divinity is a sort of 'above' being - something that is above the understanding of earthly life-forms.
Immortal just means that a being is not bound by mortality - and this can come in many forms (eternal youth, unkillability, a combo of the two, etc).

There's a point where you have to say Merlin is completely different from Thor, know what I mean? :twilightsheepish:

4384650 I see what you're getting, but I stand by my point. I don't have a dictionary on hand, so I turn to the next best thing: Google. Define divinity gets you 'of related to a deity' and define deity gets you 'a god'.

Define god:

2. (in certain other religions) a superhuman being or spirit worshiped as having power over nature or human fortunes; a deity.

I don't know about human fortunes, but the Princess certainly are worshiped for having power over nature.

In that regard, all beings of magical nature would be such; pegasi manipulate weather, unicorns... just about everything else. The only thing that wouldn't be would be Earth Ponies, what with their magic being more passive.

In my eyes, Celestia is just a powerful mage; not a divine being.:moustache:

4386491 Well, that's kinda what I'm saying; at what point does a powerful mage become so powerful they can be called a god, even if a lesser one? Using your example, how much more powerful must Merlin become to be compared to Thor?

I don't think they can, is what I'm saying. To me, there is a clear and definite line between the two. Consider it DnD logic - you have divine magic and arcane magic. Arcane is the earthly stuff, strong, but limited. Divine is something greater, and much, much harder to enforce any limitaiton upon.

:rainbowlaugh::rainbowlaugh::rainbowlaugh: The ending, dammit Luna you perv. :rainbowlaugh: In case you cannot tell, I greatly enjoyed this story.

In the end, its more of a personal definition of what amounts to a god. By greek standards? Celestia is definitely a god. But by several others, she would simply be an immortal mage. Personally, I like the deity route.

I tend to err on the side of what happens in fantasy, and Celestia has all the trappings of a mage, who are often known for extending their lives by centuries through arcane means. The entire 'Celestia as a deity' thing is just way over the top, and ignores the fact that powerful though she may be, she does have limits. Even Lauren Faust herself said that Celestia was just really magical, and not an actual goddess, which is probably as close as we're ever going to get to an answer to the question.

Well, the whole "Immortal hybrid of all three races" thing that they get through Ascension(Flurry Heart is a mystery for the moment) kind of works in favor of calling them gods. Sure, a mage could lengthen their lifespan, but the ascending thing is what sells it. Not to mention the ease at which they move the sun and moon- while, yes, mortal unicorns could move them, it strained and drained them to point of losing their magic. Not unsimilar to how the son of Helios could drive the chariot of the sun, but obviously wasn't as good at it.

And of course the Faust isn't going to say Celestia is a goddess: saying that kind of stuff officially would probably get bad reactions out of a lot of people. The fact that Celestia very much gets the Royal-and-near-divine treatment gives plenty of wiggle room for some to writer Alicorns as gods, and others to write them as mages. Me, I write them as the story requires.

So she's just as immortal as a magic jellyfish... that's fine.
