You do know there will be TWO dethroned moments because of Twilight becoming an Alicorn. But, with Shining having gained prince title from Cadence, he will have to marry another Princess to keep it even after the divorce, since Cadence will be dethroned, I suggest Luna after the divorce.

3862253 I think the author is going for the more. "Equestria is kinda run by the monarchs but the nobility is trying to/is take over" feel to it. I like stories with this kinda feel. Because it shows that Tia/Lulu are not all powerful god rulers. The Nobility can be ever more powerful then a monarch at times. And going against the nobility as a whole is suicided for any monarch.
This story has potential, but the nobles being able to overrule all three princesses is stretching my suspension of disbelief pretty tight

Ok sure. The nobles overthrow the Princesses and get rid of them. Then there will be no more day and night. Then the rest of Equestria finds out their skies are in Limbo because of the bigoted nobles doing that... well I am pretty sure there is much more ponies in Equestria who would want things back to normal than there are homophobic nobles in Canterlot.
In most cases the Nobility being too powerful would be a legitimate problem. However, Celestia and Luna control the sun and the night. I doubt all the nobles in Canterlot can even muster enough magic to move a pebble on the moon, let alone the moon and stars and definitely not even be able to budge the sun. In short, the only ones who could loose are the nobles.

Celestia and Luna both using there power to decree that same sex relationships be excepted, will look like an abuse of power to the large popular of those that are undecided and against it. Plus the Political scene is mandatory here. Celestia and Luna have to work through the Noble house's and the courts to allow things. She can say I decree this(example being making twilight live in Ponyvile[s1e2]) But she has to notarized and let it be approved through the system. It's how a healthy Government works. Something that Celestia has indeed made.) but its not truly official. Thus if they use there power to decree this without the approval of the System. the people they need to reliaze its okay for it to happen could rise against them and make things very very difficult.

Cadence comes off as a bit jerk-ish here. Don't get me wrong; the basic idea of her being more interested in Twilight seems okay enough, but one would think that if she was going to fake being straight, she'd have let Shining in on the secret from the start.

In a way, yes. Father Mortivida explained it last chapter, but the noble system gets every law passed and creates them as well. The princesses have to go through the Nobel houses for the sake of not disrupting the system and getting violent backlash because of that. I will explain this more next chapter.

If all alicorns are fully hermaphrodites, then for legal purposes is it even possible for them to engage in a technically gay relationship? After all, they can provide evidence of the proper equipment for either gender, and can sire and/or bear children.
Of course, from another, more antagonistic point of view, it could be argued that there is no possible way for them to engage in a straight relationship either. Except maybe with another alicorn.
