I'm curious as to what these 'humans' are armed with... The metal rods are a current mystery, and the steel drums basically have lost me.
The facial features sound....unnatural.

The rods, guns? Possibly. Steel barrels on their heads? Helmets probably. Their facial features are probably masks of some sort, unless they are horribly disfigured.
