Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists.

This story is a sequel to To Be A Mule

And to remember.

For the record, though this is referencing concepts and characters that were originally introduced in a Xenophilia spin-off, it isn't set in the Xenophilia 'verse. Consider it the universe right next door. Practically the same but for that one teeny, tiny difference...

Huh. Fascinating. It's kind of frustrating that our perspective character wasn't in tune with whatever magic was taking place until the very end, but on the other hand, neither are we. Both Dilly and the reader are outsiders being let in, and there is an unavoidable sense of feeling both terribly alien and incredibly privileged.
I do hope you continue with this, arch. This is some fascinating stuff for a woefully underappreciated species.

I am the old wise duncan with the nice suit and the deep authoritative voice, so naturally I am here to dispense the wisdom and sagacity of our spiritual and temporal forebears!

Early is best Morgan Freeman.

What? That's where my mind immediately went.

2771246 I'm tempted to start a donkey group. They need hugs.

I will continue with this! Whether anyone enjoys it I have no idea, but there are plans afoot to explore the world of the donkey some more.

Also I don't know if you noticed, but Dilly Daliér didn't get the full sense of what was going on even at the end. Mules are quite tragic little critters, always stuck half way between being a pony and being a donkey and never really experiencing either world to the full. Probably. :trixieshiftright:

2772726 Of course! I'll be the first to admit we could do with more stories about Equestrian ass. :trollestia:

Quite well done Mister Arch. You're going after another unique perspective on things in Equestria, which is always awesome.

Alba licked her lips and swallowed as he lead her out into the circle, keeping his head close to hers.

"Lead" should be "led" to match tense with the rest of the sentence.

2825579 Dammit, I thought I caught all of those this time.

This is very sweet, and you generated a lot of mystery and tension that I liked, not just about the Festival and 'remembering' but also between Dal and Alba. They're a sweet 'outsider' couple that you made fit together very nicely.

Can you tell us what your plans for this are, if there's any real plan at this point? My question comes from the fact that this is marked 'complete', and you so left us hanging...

2832884 This is actually a side-story to a fic I haven't written yet. And I have to admit I'm a little nervous about posting it because I suspect it may disappoint a few people. Or please them. Frankly I'm not sure which is worse.

Hmmm...very interesting. :trixieshiftright: It's a nice little bit of world-building for the donkeys, and I liked Dal and Alba.

I know this is probably only me, but I feel like the 'remembering' thing sounds...ominous? Like it's something that to outsiders would seem bad/awful/incomprehensible, but to the donkeys in the know, it's a part of their lives and they make a celebration out of it. (That made no sense, I know. :facehoof:)

But good story!

Truly beautiful. I like to think that while Mules are neither one nor t'other and in being in between can create a culture and story all to themselves.

Simple, and lovely. It catches, it grabs, but with words you dont need, painted bright, burning stark.

Beautiful. Though, I'm almost annoyed that we still don't know what the donkeys are up to.

Still, very alien little thing. Dalier and Alba are almost tragic. I think that's what marks this out in my mind - it's very mature and well-constructed, as Archonifics(tm) tend to be.

I have this thought that won't leave me alone that Alba is Twilight in the future of your other story. :unsuresweetie:
And that has... implications.
*shrugs* it doesn't make all that much sense but I can't stop the niggling feeling. (also it would make the title a pun and i have an unforgivable love of puns)
Great story either way! Dal is an interesting viewpoint character, at once separate from and familiar with the events around him--and Early is fantastic!

4304402 :derpytongue2:

Early was fun to write. I want to try and get him into more of my fics somehow.

Somehow

So, what is the donkeys´ magic? to recall genetic memories like the Bene Gesserit?

4621737 Surprisingly enough that is a big part of it, yes. Or something like that.

You used Early's name the paragraph before he introduced himself.

5186272 Mmmmmmmmmmaybe!

But yes.

Equine of the Threshold, neither fish nor fowl
Sweet with the breeze of two living worlds
Whose soil each - auld and ancient sod -
You never will trod with your heavy hoof
Nor their secrets see proof with
Mixed, hybrid eyes and yet,
Being so - wise - oh, forlorn child
Stripling of the border and the march
Jock o' the Pale!
Pass them, then, to tell the tale
Of those who would walk
Between and betwixt
By your precious well-guarded sally-port.
