If it is like Deus Ex Machina, I do apologize, but I had no idea how I was gonna follow this story through. In fact I'm still not sure if I do. Once I introduced this idea to my group, I got a lotta encouragement to do this, and I had no idea whatsoever that it would become this popular.

Actually, I was completely serious when I wrote that I had an idea who put the ring there. There are two logical choices:
a)Celestia herself, as Chrony pointed out- either as a trap or to ensure a night of particularly kinky fun, or
b)Discord. Maybe even in a well-meant but misguided attempt at 'reforming' the Princess herself. He knows even Twilight and her friends planned to simply use magic to reform him- and they are rightfully considered Equestria's heroes. It wouldn't be a stretch for him to conclude that, if the heroes wanted to go through with such a forceful approach, there has to be some merit to it.
I better stop before I ramble on...
